Decades before Hide-A-Hose, Chameleon, or Doc-It/Hose Magic, electrician James Hamrick from North Carolina developed his own retractable hose technology, complete with automatic ejection and the ability to use the retractable hose in standard plug-in wall inlets!
In this video I share an original installation manual and patents covering this invention.
Special thanks to Bill LaMonica of Vaculine and Enhancement Systems for sending me this literature.

When I originally saw Evan’s video, I was already fascinated that they already had a retractable hose in the 60s.
But now seeing your video and knowing the rest of the engineering marvel behind it, I am even more fascinated! It is too bad these weren’t more common.
Why do you think it never took off back then? Was it because carpet became so prominent in the 70s and there just wasn’t the tools to effectively clean it? Was it because of the complexity of the solenoid, that it was prone to failure? Or just because it would have maybe lacked power with the older plastic, seal, and hose designs?

I'm just a guy in the industry but I have a theory on that. If you want retractable systems to take off ---- you need a nationwide size brand name to supply/install/support the product. This looks like it was supplied to a few dealers but lacked that massive network of a Vacuflo or Beam. Hide-a-hose was smart about it (well, until Vacuflo became a strong competitor) and established a relationship with Vacuflo to gain a foothold (and test/develope/improve the product) in all the markets that Vacuflo was established. They had a clause that Vacuflo had exclusive rights to sell the hide-a-hose product in any region they were in. This is attractive to a dealer because they essentially have a monopoly. Well, that's the story of how retractable systems gained popularity.

@@allclevernamesgone Yes, that does make sense. Thank you for explaining it.
