- In this video i'll show you easy way to stain your shou sugi ban like a pro.
Shou Sugi Ban also known as Yakisugi is a traditional Japanese technique to preserve and protect the wood.
I used a spirit stain from Chestnut and its already one of my favorite.
Also as an experiment i tried acrylic paint and surprisingly it works really well.
Expectation meet reality and i can't be more satisfied with results.
I hope you gonna find this video helpful for you.

Oh yes, that looks amazing. I'd not thought of staining after burning, now I must try it.

Thank you for the video so much, I ordered the stains to try them by myself. Could you be so kind to advise me on the top coat, please: Why do you use it not leaving everything as it is? Can I use Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish Dead Flat or it is better to go with the Clear Satin option? or anything else? I don't want the wood look like a yacht, want its natural texture to be saved but I don't know a top coat which will not hide it. Please advise.
You're welcome Jake, literally you can use any type of finish you like, personally I love oils instead of varnishes but on other project i did use wax finish varnish in satin and it did look great.
@@MatthewMoustache Could you give me the name of the oil you prefer for stained Shou Sugi Ban and were do you buy this stuff from (I assume you are in the UK), please?
@Jake I'm a big fan of Rubio monocoat pure but it's a bit expensive you can get it from their website or from Axminster tools, other option is linsed oil available everywhere and third option is osmo oil
@@MatthewMoustache Matthew, thank you for the info! Does it really worth using any of these products or it's just a matter of taste? Also, speaking about osmo oil what certain product do you mean? I'm asking since there are many of them (osmo natural oil wood stain or osmo topoil clear matt or osmo polyx oil clear satin or osmo maintenance oil clear). Please advise. Finally, I've just got & tried Chrstnut product - looks great, but in some places there are as if bald spots (supposedly not painted over) - why does this happen and how can this be avoided?
@Jake-kl6xl i would need to see it, i dont have too much experience with osmo, tried only hardwax oil in natural. Do you have any other social media like fb ig?? It would be easier to chat over there
Another method is to mix oil based paint/stain like you used to paint the boards and mix it into an oil based clear stain like Minwax. But both must be oil based. Mix well & use. You'll get the same result as your Spirit Stain
Thanks Guy 👊 I'll try that 😁
Did you try mixing some of the stains to see what other colours you can get? 👍 😎
No i didn't but this sounds like a good idea 😁👊
Thanks for sharing this insightful video. I never considered staining the burned wood; prior to this video I have only seen an application of oil or shellac to preserve the wood after brushing the charred surface.
Wishing you and your family a blessed new year. Greetings from Ne Ohio, USA.
Adding a colour to your charred wood is a game changer 👊 thank you very much from me and my family my friend 👍💪
@@MatthewMoustache Bless you brother.
Great Video. 👍
Thanks buddy 👊
