It is amazing to me how Valerie and Nancy (Rhoda and Ida) started their rapport on one of the very first episodes of the Mary Tyler Moore Show and continued it and developed it into something so amazing over EIGHT seasons of TV. Mary herself never had a shred of anything like that. Yeah she and Rhoda were a great pair of friends but the mother-daughter dynamic between Rhoda and Ida was utterly convincing. They captured the Jewish element DEAD-ON...even though neither Valerie nor Nancy was Jewish.
I don't blame Ida for moving on.... Rhoda and Brenda shouldn't blame her either, since the whole sitcom was pretty much based on the girls finding companionship and love. That's all Ida really wants is a little companionship. Since Martin feels he needs more out of life. And I really wished they would have left Brenda with Gary instead of what she's stuck with now. I hope Martin comes back.

Believe it or not, Rhoda's clothes that season were the height of fashion at the time - full, calf-length skirts/dresses in cotton eyelet, cotton gauze, etc, were in, especially with shawls. Full, full shapes ballooning around the body, natural fibers, and earthtones were very high fashion, called "the Big Look," with big meaning big and loose in shape. Check out fashion magazines of the time and you'll see it. Even the perm-curled hair that everybody seems to hate was newly in style in 1977-78; fashion designers called it a return to femininity. The always-trendy Rhoda character would have been up on all that and would have worn it in an exaggerated form; the costumers knew what they were doing. It was so in at the time that Valerie Harper probably even approved of it.
Charles Siebert was a nice looking man; but before you get too carried away, he did wear a toupee. Not that it really makes any difference, but anyway, he wasn't in reality quite as he appeared.
In fact, the year she was not on Rhoda (1976) and supposedly touring in a Winnebago, she had "The Nancy Walker Show" on ABC . It wasn't a spinoff, but a Norman Lear sitcom about an interracial couple. It was cancelled after 13 episodes.
I am amazed all of the actors/actresses did not leave the show en masse. This is simply embarrassing; this show should have been cancelled midway of the THIRD SEASON!
She dated that bank manager feom Brenda's bank anf they had a ton of chemistry. They made her get divorced and nothing changed except she didn't date much
It's a shame Gary Levy (Ron Silver) wasn't in season 5. I also grew even more irritated with Benny and Jack. Rhoda's hair was just wrong. And the whole Ida and Martin separation was lame. I didn't even like this version of the theme song. It was such a great show that just lost its way.
this show started out so strong, but by season 5 it was a train wreck, the characters became caricatures, and too many unnecessary new characters were added : none of them were likeable and they never seemed to meld into a cohesive ensemble. The only saving grace was the amazing comedic talents of Nancy Walker and Valerie Harper and their chemistry with one another. Even Brenda, who was originally very good, became annoying and cliched by the 5th season.

In the final one season of "Rhoda" (September 23-December 9, 1978) on CBS primetime, most American viewers preferred NBC primetime's "CHiPs" starring Larry Wilcox as Officer Jon Baker, Erik Estrada as Frank Poncherello (Ponch) & Robert Pine as Sgt. Joe Getraer the best, not "Rhoda".
I don't know why "Rhoda" ended too soon. I think for some reason it wasn't getting the ratings anymore and when that happens, the network will pull the plug on it. I think the show had a great trajectory, with the Joe divorce and moving back into single life and working with Jack Doyle. But the Brenda-and-Benny thing didn't work. Thankfully we never saw them get married but that's where it was headed and that was going to be a dead end. But the earlier supporting characters who provided a lot of good comedy were long gone by then - Gary, Sally, Nick Lobo, Johnny Venture. The end was inevitable.
God. Rhoda lost weight. why do they put her in the most unfattening unbecoming outfits The stylist isnt doing their job here. Her look is all over the place every episode. The hair makeup too. This woman is beautiful How could they mess it up so badly. Their idea of boho is like international catalog clothing. They dress her like shes fat and she aint. She looks great glammed. not frumped how old did they think she was.
That Tina would make me scream. Rhoda looks horrid at the starting scene in the costume shop.The first 2 seasons of this were the best. This show wasn't on that long, so it was like the writers knew how many seasons it would last, and they rushed everything together to make sure it all got included. Good grief, it wasn't enough of an error to have Rhoda and Joe divorce, the writers extended the stupidity to Ida and her husband? After 40 years of a good marriage, what was suddenly THEIR problem?? Rhoda was acting stupid when she had her mom and the doc over for supper. In fact, she was acting rude to her mom. Ida isn't 70, either...she is spry and vibrant, and pretty. Rhoda is jealous because she couldn't keep Joe. She acts like a brat on this. And NYC is a huge city, it's not like dating in a town of 200 people. Very few people would notice Ida and the doc in public, nor would they care. I hated that spaghetti strap dress Rhoda wore when she first met her mom's date. It was like a shapeless sack hanging from her shoulders.

Granted Ida had some slams regarding Rhoda's weight but that was not the issue for the writing of Rhoda's behavior. This was a very poorly scripted episode and clear example of the downward talent.
Brenda was hilarious, so wry humored. I liked her boyfriend Benny. Murray the doc is cute. I can't recall his name, but he has been on several sitcoms. Rhoda needs to lay off Ida's date. She is on her mom's side until she meets Murray. Nancy Walker was better looking than Rhoda. The funniest eps were ones with Ida. I watched this new, from premiere to end. That brownish print dress with spaghetti straps Rhoda is wearing when Benny brings the wine to her at her apt., is hidious! Looks like an oversized bag and makes her breasts look sagging. Rhoda has mainly dated losers, and Ida gets a cute doctor. Funny! I never liked Tina or how she talked. Irritating.
This show has terrible music and some very irritating characters. Brenda included. Her nasal voice is unbearable. Valerie Harper deserved a better show and supporting cast. She is beautiful and a brilliant actress.
Sounds like you started watching the programme at Season 5!! And I suspect you're not watching for nostalgia like a lot of people here might. The first three seasons, at least....are classic. Julie Kavner is utterly brilliant in many many episodes before this point.

As good as MTM and this show are, the inconsistencies are a flaw that I find annoying and insulting to our intelligence..The end of last season Martin declares how Ida is his life, this season he runs off to Florida and Ida is dating ??? come on. In MTM actors would reappear in later episodes as different characters, the worst of them being Richard Schaal ( Valery Harper's then husband) being recast as his own brother but is said to better looking and a better catch than his brother. That's is just lame and a lazy way out. And the abrupt departure of Gary with a brief explanation coming from all people Tina ( she goes she goes lol ) that was just disrespectful to the actor and the character.

Noticed in these season 5 shows, even the studio audience doesn't find Tina very funny. She rarely gets more than a few awkward chuckles.
