    I have to say this. I've reviewed many a sitcom in my 55 years, from the classics to current shows, but this one stands in a class by itself. Despite the fact that the writers, under pressure from the studio or other powers that be, was a rare comedy that focused on our own self-critical analysis. There were plenty of discussions on self awareness that sitcoms rarely do. Rhoda had some major flaws, but the reason this show has relevance is the aforementioned self image slant. A very verbose show on how we analyze ourselves. The best comedy is when they deal with the pertinent serious dramatic subplot of life.

    Benny is kinda quiet, mellow, and laid back, not flamboyant or 'in your face' type.Those people easily get lost in a crowd, but it's not because they aren't liked. Benny is funny, witty, and cute. I think Brenda is going overboard with her behavior toward Benny, but Rhoda is interfering sometimes, too, and that doesn't help.

      Unfortunately because television for many is the outlet into the wide world, if you family didn’t have a huge number of people that you saw regularly…. TV set the tone for so much. And it still does. This show was 5o years ago.. can you honestly imagine in another 50 what people are going to think of civilisation should they see the amount of shallow, woke and uncultured programming of todays viewing. At least this show and MTM had actors and storyline’s that had talent , relatability and joy to them…. However you felt about things being unfair or unequal. No one is alive from the major cast members from MTM so ask yourself if you are over 50 yrs old now to relate to these shows…. When your time comes to that age of 80 or so… the character of the people reflected in our days…may be the ones tending to your needs… in a nursing home, handling your affairs… serving you at the bank. Bit of a worry…. At least this era being shown had some backbone, a work mentality and had to apply themselves to survive.

    Valerie Harper said it herself that Rhoda was a character who the female audience can relate to / identify with. So why insist on repeatedly bringing back the characters that annoy Rhoda? i.e., they annoy the audience too, because they are not aligned with Rhoda’s persona.
    Looking back, this whole season was filled with them. Season 4 marked the silent exits of Gary and Sally. They were at least solid characters that provided some solid ground through the misadventures. It became quite chaotic at the end. The focus on Rhoda was lost.
    Still enjoyed watching.

    Rhoda is always in her sister's life. Brenda was right to tell her to MYOB! Rhoda tells Brenda she is bending over backwards for Benny...but Rhoda did the same for Joe, and also took a bunch of junk off of him...then lost him. Maybe she's jealous that Brenda has a man who loves her, and Rhoda doesn't.

  • @jackies1729

    Brenda and Benny are a very realistic, sweet couple. Brenda was very sweet to him - Rhoda and that stupid feminist agenda is ridiculous. It's not wrong to take care of those you love. I'm not saying one should lose themselves, but there's definitely something to both people in a couple pampering each other and being kind to each other.

    I think Rhoda suffered from being a female-centric show on which the male characters were flat and nondescript (Joe, Benny, Gary), or outright disgusting pigs (Jack). They were never able to get the formula right for a good ensemble show in the vein of MTM. Harper and Kavner were great, but could not pull it off alone.

      Joseph LaCerra Ignore that Jackson troll; all she does is make nasty ad hominem remarks about every poster. I agree with you about the formula not working, but I think it was intentional. The writers/producers had many opportunities to make the male characters work. Joe wasn’t bad until he went south in season 3. Gary was good for a friend. And they could have pursued a whole new love angle for Rhoda with Sam the bank manager, played intriguingly by Frank Converse. Instead, they seemed intent on making the most beautiful and love-hungry women, exemplified by Rhoda, as having eternal and senseless frustration in love. Maybe they were mirroring the times and men’s growing perverseness and resistance to commitment. Maybe the writers were jealous of Rhoda. They had it in their hands to make it last another five years, but they dropped the ball.

    • @jamessandy5873
      @jamessandy5873 5 лет назад +3

      Joseph LaCerra: Good point. I had never thought about it that way before. Joe was a terrible idea from the start (as the producers eventually recognized themselves) and was terribly written, and I believe David Groh was miscast. I thought Gary was very funny, but pretty much one-dimensional. Harper, Kavner, and Walker carried the show without much support, and the successful ratings during season 1 is mostly a testament to their comedic acting and charisma. Also, the MTM Show writers worked on "Rhoda" the first season, but then abandoned the show and handed it over to Charlotte Brown.
