This movie is based on the short-lived TV show, "Police Squad!" which only ran for 6 episodes (all hilarious). But, the network recognized its potential as a movie and so gave the go-ahead to write the script. As Leslie Nielson pointed out, the most likely reason that it failed as a TV show is because it really requires you to pay attention at all times to get all the jokes, unlike most TV shows that can be playing almost in the background and you can still follow what's going on. As a movie you will have your full attention on it so it works.

Six episodes actually. They canceled it because the network thought audiences wouldn’t be able to catch every joke upon first viewing; it was one of those shows you had to pay great attention to see the more subtle jokes. It basically got canceled for being too funny (and this is why shit like Big Bang Theory is able to go on for 12 seasons).

The use of the floppy dummies this way originated from a 1970's British comedy series called "The Goodies". In that show, they'd have the dummies do stunts, then do an obvious "stop frame", and swap back the actors in the same poses.

Liam Neeson is gonna need to level with Leslie Nielsen's comedic chops on the upcoming NG reboot. Also Seth McFarlene's producing the reboot.

Just as Airplane was based mostly on the movie "Zero Hour" (even repeating dialogue verbatim), Police Squad (the six episode television series that gave way to the Naked Gun movies) was based on Lee Marvin's "M Squad". In fact, the first episode of Police Squad (A Substantial Gift) heavily parodied M Squad's first episode of its second season (More Deadly). Two of the greatest treats of Police Squad was its celebrity guest stars dying within seconds in the opening credits and the money-saving faked freeze frame as the credits roll. While Frank Drebin, Al and police scientist Ted Olsen repeated their roles in the Naked Gun movies, Frank's Captain and Norberg were played by different actors (Alan North and Peter Lupus, respectively). It also starred Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln firing back on whoever shot his hat off in the opening credits. It's a shame the series didn't catch on with television audiences but thank goodness for the movies. On a side note: Al, the tall detective with a quarter of banana stuck on the side of his mouth, was played by actor Tiny Ron Taylor. Tiny Ron also played the huge menacing henchman Lothar (with prosthetic makeup to look like Rondo Hatton) in Disney's excellent, The Rocketeer; Hatton acted in movies from 1927 to 1946. I would strongly suggest a viewing of The Rocketeer as well. It didn't do well at the box office but it's such a fun and well-made movie that introduces the world to a 1938 superhero. It also has an excellent cast.

Fun Fact: Police Squad the TV series always had a celebrity they would kill off in the credits and bill them as guest stars. Shorty before John Belushi's death he filmed a cameo death. on the show. When he died they left it out of the episode and supposedly burned the footage.
