OH MY GOSH, I had the strength, the balance, the flexibility. And I couldn’t do this. But your second tip just HANDED that press handstand over to me!!!!
People who do tutorial videos, make some notes! This is a good tutorial, well done! Very well executed, good examples, proper explanation (Explaining why something is done, not just doing it). Got myself one extra tip from here, cheers!
good tips, as always! One thing I'd like to add because it made me go from not being close at all to doing my first press without any warmup is this; instead of just trying to lift your feet from the ground, start with your feet a little further (closer to a plank position) and slide them towards your hands on the top of your toes. From there you press handstand. I think this works because you get an idea for the "rolling" up sensation because you start with a pulling like motion. And of course the momentum helps :p. Ill maybe make a video to explain it a bit better at some point!
Question was a year ago but.. Get yourself a soft ground not a yoga mat but like multiple blankets or beach chair cushion things Fall on purpose Do some tumbles roll on the ground drop your body in a controlled way so you know how to fail then you know it's not a problem when you do You can apply this to other things as well learn how to fail properly so you remove your fear
The straddle move at 1:38- I can’t do without getting terrible cramps on the outsides on my hips. I am very flexible and I have all the mobility and strength and have my press. But I’m trying to do it from the seated position and for some reason I just can’t lift my legs like that
I actually got my first press handstand last night after spending 3 days of practicing these stretches ! Awesome video man helped me pinpointed exactly what i was doing wrong .
Marin, I feel the same. Why so short? I am guessing here, but Tom has probably been criticized for being too long winded. See for example 0:40 where Tom half apologizes for the older "long winded" video. Sure is hard to please everyone. But heck, I am voting with you Marin, no need to go to extra work to make them short. haha
ohhiguy So true! I dont usually enjoy longer videos but when it comes to Tom, i could watch 30min of him. He makes his video so entertaining, its unbeliveable. Glad you agree with me. :)
If it was up to me, I'd happily do a 30-minute lecture haha. Unfortunately, 90% of people only watch 3-5 minutes. I'll still continue to make those 20 minute ones but adding in these quick tips videos to distill those important pieces of info mean I can help everyone out :)
Tom Merrick wait really? I thought people were just like me, enjoying every second of your videos. It is probably because I watch plenty of other youtubers (fitness) so I learnt to recognize quality ones and appreciate time they put into videos. I hope more and more people will realize how quality your content is.
Tom, you better ignore this kind of comments! You don§t need to explain anything to them. Your videos are fully professional, understandable and you help a lot for those people, who understand what you are talking about! Thank you for your work! :D
Hey mate great videos.. Can you just clear this one for me.. I can bring my hips over my shoulder but I just don't know what musceles to use bring that legs up??? Cheers from India mate..
I have all the flexibility, lots of strength, but cannot balance the handstand yet. The balance is what i struggle with the most. With a wall i press up...easily, but without that wall, i d fall backwards. I find that leaning forwards until the legs come off the floor is extremely hard for my wrists, although i do a lot of planks, down dogs, aerial (i am an aerialist). Strange. What do i need? More Wrist strength?
I feel like my mobility is good but just can’t physically get my feet off the floor :/ do I need to focus more on the compression exercises? Also my wrists kinda hurt lol
I’m basically flat in my pancake and my pike fold is all the way down but my legs only come about and inch off the floor for like a split second and then they come down ! What do I do???!
Ok I think you’d need to come and help me cuz I KEEP FALLING OVER. I know how to walk on my hands, hold it, press up by jumping but somehow can’t lift myself up slowly !!! It’s too hard I feel like it’s impossible for me
Here's a little help from a bodybuilder... Grab yourself some shortbells and train the "shoulder press" with it. Use a solid weight to make ~6 reps. Do this 6 times with a break of 60-90sec between your (so called) "sets" of 6 reps. After every 4 weeks you should need more heavier weights to NOT overpower your 6 reps. 6 is your friend, not more not less... When doing so, after 6 months you will be able to lift your self up while handstanding😊
Not just flexibility, body proportions matter as well. Short legs and long torso are not good to achieve the required tipping over of the hips without a jump. Basically, if you have short legs, it's as if you were doing it with your HANDS elevated on a block and feet on the floor. You can try that to see what "press handstand life" is like for the anatomically less fortunate among us.
Mava Mava with a mini-hop it is very manageable, and I suspect with more training the mini-hop won't be needed either... it also depends on how deep forward you can bend
hey tom,can i give you a question? well, what's your favourite training? for example,my training i muscular failure (or even beyond),light/medium weights and medium/high reps. Strenght endurance. wgat about you? maximum strenght? skill? buffer or failure? anyway, great video!!!
Suggested subject after watching your vid on circadian rhythm: any progress in terms of insight in how quality of sleep affects your physical form and what constitutes good quality of sleep in your experience? It does look like you never train late in the day, is that correct?
Could be a great video. I think the original video covers a lot of good stuff but diving more into sleep and recovery could be a good, and important, one to make :)
Would be awesome! Yup, circadian rhythm can be a bit of a headache if you want to adjust everything, so best use is focus on areas we want to specifically improve, and for me that's sleep (and digestion, but that's too complicated, I'd rather eat good stuff whenever I can instead of planning too much). I did find that being more precise in sleep rhythm makes a different. I used to think I had a basic sleep cycle of 90 mins, but now I've fine-tuned it to 80 mins and it does make a difference. Also less coffee (used to drink 4-6 cups a day, now 1-3) and no laptop to bed (even with f.lux) is better. Major improvement also for those who are physically nervous : take a bit of time to relax physically right before bedtime. Whether through stretching or yoga, taking a slightly warm bath or short shower, having a good time with friends or family, quality time with partner, or even just 10 minutes of decent meditation... all of that can really make a difference. Cheers!
You tore your supraspinatus and didn't become forever immobile? What on earth .. I've been recovering from bursitis for 14 months and am still not ok...
Ah, flexibility. That's why I can't do it. I can do freestanding handstand push-ups, but lifting my legs without bending my arms feels literally impossible
legs. the shorter your legs the easier a handstand. its relatively easy to press into handstand with short legs. you almost never see acrobats who are tall and have very long legs compared to torso.
It's kind of funny... Im a bodybuilder, pressing tons of weight in "shoulder press" & be able to perform some nice variations of headstand - but I can not do handstand. 1 year ago i started to train but - no chance. So I think not everybody is genetically able to do handstand; sadly.
David Beckham that's bullshit. If you're able bodied you can definitely do it. I just held my first 10 second handstand today after about 2 weeks of consistent practice.
I didn't understand this comment until I just watched the video on suggested. These principles are pretty universally known in handbalancing though, nothing new :)
Your right men! The hips over the shoulders is Important for your Injury that brings the spine in a better Position . That put less Stress on your Supraspinats Tendon!✌️

Awesome quick tip video! I know what I gotta train for now
I always love that your videos get to the point and don't drag on. Great vid!
We are on October. I will update every month to see when I get my press handstand

I use a similar drill with clients a lot, definitely helps :)
Sadly I don't understand what you mean 😯 The way you explaining is not soooo very good 😉
great tips, but am I the only one who has to overcome fear? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Use da wall
Question was a year ago but..
Get yourself a soft ground not a yoga mat but like multiple blankets or beach chair cushion things
Fall on purpose
Do some tumbles roll on the ground drop your body in a controlled way so you know how to fail
then you know it's not a problem when you do
You can apply this to other things as well learn how to fail properly so you remove your fear
A) use a wall. B) learn to fall by using a mat and overpower your handstand to overcome fear and learn your swinging point.
What are you scared of? Lol
Use da water bed
awesome pieces of advice here, thanks Tom
Awesome tips! Thank you! I forgot that I wanted to do this, I am gonna start training, I agree that it is an awesome skill)

I love this turtorial man! Helpd me so much
I am struggling to rotate my hips, is this normal?
Maybe you need more hip mobility bratha
I couldn't do a press to handstand, then I watched this video and on my first try I DID IT!!!
epicccccccccccc
hNord _Z for real ? How long you been trying for?
I about 4 months in and close to a bent arm press
hNord _Z oh really..?
how you can develop core strength for raising the hips in the bent arm press
Great video.Unfortunately I was one of those ppl who always underestimate mobility and thought it could be compensated by strength :/
You can to certain degree but you're just making it harder for yourself ;)
I actually got my first press handstand last night after spending 3 days of practicing these stretches ! Awesome video man helped me pinpointed exactly what i was doing wrong .
I have the pancake and the pike fold flat but I still have to lean far over my shoulders and I still can’t do it 🥺
the second tip made me do it hell yeahh, thanks broooo
When I got notificiation from Tom Merrick: Fu*k yes!!! I needed this.

Whomoomoo good points. Nice to have both. Also good for this easy short video for newcomers Esp with the links for more info. Reel them in Tom!!!
You didn't done a press to handstand since a lot of months ago and then you got it now a tutorial hahaha what a beast xD good video!
I've been able to "do" the press to handstand for a few years. Still a long way to go...thanks :)

I love that i basically need to do a full planche to press to handstand because i have the worst mobility you can imagine XD lol
I have three bulging discs which hinder me from doing any kind of compression or flexion in the lower back, so…we‘re in the same boat 🥲 good luck!
GOOD JOB TOM!
video on dealing with elbow tendonitis? great job with your channel!
Definitely in the works good sir :)

Tom Merrick ok thanks 👍🏼
Thank you 🙏🏿
This video alone shows you everything you need to do for a press
Any tip for having less wrist pain? it is horrible
Darn i'm stiff as a rock haha. Looks like I'll achieve the straddle planche before a P to H due to the mobility issue. Thanks for the tips Tom!
No excuse! I couldn't touch my toes 4 years ago....get stretching ;)
How often should I practice press handstand a week?
Where do I need most strength?
Shoulders and your core
on a mission to get this!
It's interesting to see how your perspective has changed over time (You know what i mean)
Haha this comes at a perfect time when I was just watching your old handstand video! :D

Can a fat guy learn to do a handstand? :D
Yes ruclips.net/video/RUgbXynvpX4/видео.html
Yes but it's maximum difficult. When you're fat you don't have flexibility and don't have power. Both is needed for handstand...
