Just got a cathoula/pit mix in the brindle variety. He’s a great dog. He protects the perimeter well and even thinks he needs to protect the neighbors perimeter too. This little man is full of spunk and fiercely loyal. Prey drive in droves he jumps at butterflies on the regular, tries to hunt every bird he sees in the trees, chases rabbits and Squirrels. This video explains a lot on my little man’s traits because I thought he was just pit but he has a smaller head and leaner body than most pits do. He learns quick and is very intelligent but he definitely tried my patience as a puppy but it was worth it because he’s very obedient now. He stays in the yard for the most part and is very friendly I haven’t had to leash him unless we go for a walk. He’s needy but kind of independent at the same time, he needs to know where I’m at at all times but isn’t to scared to explore a little on his own. But so far he’s a great dog I’m really enjoying the breed.
Thank you for being honest about this breed and not pretending they are something there are not. I am from Louisiana, and you described them perfectly. People don't just have them as in the house pets. These dogs are always job and purpose oriented. They also have a reputation for turning very aggressive, even towards their owners, when they get old.
Maple is your truest example of SW Louisiana dog. It has little to do with coloring, but instead the shape of the spine and tail. I am old and long for life with the dog gang.
@@YouCanFarm Pause at 13:15 you can observe the curvature of the spine and the tail in both your animals. They are marsh cur. Many colorations can occur (or not) in mixed breeds with input from other herding animals. Sometimes they are mistakenly considered "catahoula", but if they don't have the swoopy spine and tail they are not. The other definitive way to tell is to put them around an alligator. Unlike another canine, they will never get distracted and take their eye off of it, even if the gator doesn't move for 15 min. As you already appreciate, true catahoula are wary of strangers. They have only two designations tribe/non tribe. They like to do things and go places, but they love home best, even if its an old house with a leaky roof. They sometimes leave and go it alone if they decide they have a bad master. In 1970-1980s there used to be alot of drifter dogs and u could pick one up on the roads, or sometimes they would wander in. Maple and her baby are happy and beautiful and correct size.
I was adopted by a stray Catahoula puppy three years ago and he's the only one I've ever seen in person. He's SO independent that I would NOT have chosen him for my dog. But he stayed around and I just couldn't help but to fall in love with him. I had a GSD that died and the Catahoula is the opposite of her. But I've grown accustomed to the Catahoula and now wonder if I could tolerate another GSD - I guess he's trained me! Nice video!
Sadie was a once in a lifetime dog. I was lucky to have a dog like her. It's hard to imagine ever having a dog even close to the person she was. She introduced me to her breed. Catahoulas are a wonderful breed of personality and intelligence.
I rescued my Catahoula Pitty mix and had never heard of this breed before but I have been so amazed with her and discovering all her abilities, and yeah, especially her prey drive is off the charts. 🤯 She is so similar to your girl it’s kinda unreal 😊 This breed is so unique, and definitely a handful, so thanks for sharing and helping to inform!
Oh my God I am so glad that I had time to read This. I rescued one with no intention of getting a dog at that time. But I felt the pull toward her and hD to save her. She is Bout 6 and was caged her entire life. I too never heard of this breed and thought I had the weirdest most hyper dog in the world she doesn't sleep she wants to smell everything she's jumped out of the car to smell And just can't get enough I took it as I took her out of a cage into a huge city right downtown figure and that's what it must have been but this doesn't get enough smell. She hopped over a 5' wide Stonewall just to keep going after running. I'm 55 I thought a six-year-old would be easy i feel like i have 20 puppies with one don't know how to get around this i am bruised from head to town i look horrible I've got more scratches and holes in my body that I've ever had before she's a very aggressive but i won't give up on her and it's not my style to get rid of an animal cause I'll never forgive myself not knowing where the h*** she ever went cause i don't know nobody would keep her she's crazy but i love her she is also the most lovable thing in the world and when i touch her scars She gives me this look this so sad look that spreads my smart so I'm fighting with her INS once we go for that walk what I would not do to have a dog I could walk. She is stopping the wife I was supposed to be having at the moment but I'm still hanging in there. I live in an apartment in the city it's a big apartment but she tries to eat my cats who are older and I really feel the need to do something maybe find her a farm that needs a dog's I doubt because I think she would be so happy there but I won't give her away if I know she's going to be safe And happy She deserves it. Once I researched her brain cause I do have her shots and her paperwork and all that but once I found out what they were like she fits every description all 10 of the characteristics, now knowing What I've learned about this dog she's exactly what they say and does all of that from protection To extreme aggressiveness even just playing I mean I have tiny little business all over me from being bad I'm not allowed to leave it's crazy can anybody help me I figure if you're reading this you do have a Passion for this type of dog
Thank you for that. My Luna girl was abandoned at my fire station, so I brought her home. I had never heard of this breed, but you nailed it. She is all of the things you described.
I really enjoyed watching your video. First time Catahoula owner. We found this breed by luck. We found him on the street in our neighborhood as a puppy. We love our boy Blue.
My roommate has a catahoula. The first time I tried to play fetch with him, he retrieved the toy twice. The third time I threw it, he barked at me, took the toy and went to his room. He'll play fetch with me now, but I can't pretend to throw the toy and hide it behind my back. I swear he rolls his eyes every time I try.
What a great video... it's abundantly clear how much you love your doggies, and how much they love you. What a great life for them on your big property. Wishing you and them much happiness and good health. 😊
This puts a lot into perspective about my dog. He's a labrador catahoula mix, and he's definitely a lot smarter than he lets on. He slyly grabs our border collie's toys while he isn't looking xD and you're never unsure as to what he wants, be it a toy or food. With one exception, he's very territorial and very protective. He's generally not that friendly with neighbor's dogs and doesn't even like people so much as tickling me. He has to know that an animal is going to be a part of the family if he's going to get along. While he may seem aggressive to passers by, when a visitor gets into the house, he's as affectionate as can be. As for the prey drive, he's got it in spades. We've had a problem with mice, and he's been quick to handle them. And I'll never forget the one time he actually got a squirrel.
Great video! I have a Catahoula; Claire. She is an amazing animal, prey drive off the charts. But smart enough to stay away from what would maim her and turkeys. She don’t mess with turkeys. She eats mice moles voles bunny’s rats squirrels. You name it. I think I’m Catahoula for life.
1 year ago I got my beautiful catahoula leopard/presa canario mix never heard of it but i got her for my birthday when she was 6 weeks old she is a rescue pup cause her mom died when her and her siblings was 4 weeks old and I am blessed she is me everything she is black, brindle going down her Legs and white tipped paws ☺️🥰
Love your babies! Especially like your history of the breed with its roots in Louisiana. You both are fantastic in terms of training, herding and best of all love💕🐾
I love Luna, my Blue Merle Catahoula. She's a rescue from Western KY and was about 1½ yrs old when I adopted her. Fiercely protective of my house, she is great with other dogs and outruns most of her pals. Her best bud is Atlas, a male Husky. She loves to chase him and usually catches him by the tail, getting the white fluff his tail sheds in her mouth. She is my first Catahoula; never heard of the breed before adopting her. Sweet, sensitive, 53 lbs, amber eyes, medium coat rarely sheds and dries quickly when I wash her.
Thanks for the video, we have a 15 week old puppy Brin, here in New Zealand. This breed, I believe was introduced into New Zealand in the 1970’s as we have a very strong pig hunting culture here. He has the classic leopard markings. He is very stubborn and needs strong guidance. I love Brins level of intelligence, and fortunately l am use to training dogs with strong personalities, so l have no problem been the bitchy Alpha leader. We got. Brin at only 5 weeks old. I took him into the bush a couple of days after l got him and he disappeared on me. About 5 mins later he came back dragging what l thought was a stick, but it was a dried out lower half of a pigs leg. He was so proud of himself. He definitely has pig hunting instincts and spends ages every morning checking out the scent trails of wild animals that have wondered through our property the night before. He loves herding the chickens, is fascinated by our neighbours cattle and LOVES swimming in the creek, and the local harbour.
My Merlin found what I believe was a full Raccoon skeleton when we were at the abandoned airport behind my house. So gross. Got it away from him, I swear, 5 minutes later, he had it in his mouth again! He was also so proud about this. There's a large bird skull in my back in the woods, I've moved it way aside. Every time Merlin is near it, he picks it up, starts running with it. Also just gross! Haha!
Best dog I ever had was a blue Merle catahoula Aussie mix. He was so smart! Sam…I will miss him forever! He used to twirl…made me laugh. He was a rescue and going to be put down the next day. Never aggressive but definitely and gently the alpha.
I have a rotti catahoula mix and he is a dream. I’ve had catahoulas before and I fell in love. He’s only under 4 months but he’s already tries to guard me. Living out in the boonies he’s a great alert and guard pup.
Enjoyed your informative video. We have a Catahoula mix and live in Australia. Catahoulas are even more unknown in our part of the world. Our girl is brown/black and white patchwork, lots of spots can be seen on her pink and white bits. She is 4 years, weighs 53 lbs, has ice blue eyes and its only her pert ears makes her appearance different to a pure bred houla. She displays all the traits of a Houla, except she is very adaptive. We started caravanning full time nearly a year ago and Sheba has adapted well to life on the move, being tied up when we have to. She is super friendly with strangers she meets at trailer parks unless she doesn't like the look of them. Can trust her meeting children as she gravitates toward small people with faces that are handy for licks. She will sleep all day in the SUV when we are travelling, but still needs lots of exercise and play everyday. Best dog ever. :D
I just rescued a catahoula mix and we live up north now. It's so cool to hear about her breed! I love how much variation exists in the breed and how that makes them mess susceptible to hereditary issues
We live in Queensland Australia and have a pair of catahoula/boarder Collie mix litter mates. Our boy has very little collie in him but our girls has some very strong Collie traits and build. It makes for a pair of very different but equally amazing all round dogs. And like you say, the catahoula is relatively unknown here but are becoming more and more popular amongst hunters trying to control the feral pigs here in Qld
I live in Florida and just rescued a Catahoula mix puppy. Her mother was rescued while pregnant in Alabama and had a litter of 6 pups at the shelter, Big Dog Ranch Rescue. She is 14 weeks now. Very smart and so far loves everyone and every dog she has met. I have had 3 labs over the last 30 years so she is my first Catahoula. She definitely has a stubborn side but she is learning quickly that she is rewarded with love, fun and affection with a few treats when she gives in.
I've not watched the whole video yet but wanted to comment. I've had 30 years of experience with the breed. I've had several litters under my belt. Both registered and unregistered. Currently not going to have any litters for probably several years since some of my catahoulas are getting old and they're all fixed mostly. I've noticed that catahoulas can develop dog selectiveness around full maturity which tends to be 2 to 3 years of age but I had a male pup turn dog selective at 9 months and since that stuff is genetic, I had him fixed fast. I would say only 1 or 2 bloodlines tend not to have dog selectiveness so 90% of the catahoulas out there have that tendency to dislike certain dogs. I run 2 packs currently because someone hates someone else. It's pretty good now that we've figured out who hates who and keep them separate, lol. Catahoulas can have issues if leopard (merle) is bred with another leopard (merle). What most catahoula breeders like to do is breed working parent to a working parent and cull the pups that don't make the cut. Used to be very common to do that. Some people still do it but won't tell anyone. Some do what's called soft culling which means the pup gets fixed before being sold. I've noticed personally if you sell or place 2 pups together in a regular pet home, they will develop Littermate Syndrome to some degree. Some can be really bad and some very mild. Rural folks tend not to have that happen because they know enough to train the pups separately and keep them separate when feeding and sleeping, etc. I will NOT sell 2 pups to the same home. I made that mistake twice with my 1st litter which were 14 pups born and all survived! The barking is natural but my dogs know to shut up the minute one of us tells them to be quiet or else they get squirted in the face with the dreaded water spray, lol. They do require a lot of exercise but my first catahoula lived with me in an apt and I was single so I had plenty of time to spend with that one so it worked out for me. My oldest male is 12 and will work a hog. The others haven't had the opportunity considering I live in Kansas and basically aren't supposed to be working them on feral hogs. All of them will catch and kill squirrels, rabbits, and coons.
@@YouCanFarm Toby is now 13 months and 60lb. He’s such a sweetheart. Loves water and chasing birds. I bought a new truck and he just barked at it. Still gets excited around people… he loves people. Becoming very vocal.
I have one with pit mix. Also brindle with one blue almost white eye and her other eye is like ombré between brown and blue. I picked her up off the side of the road and never could find an owner. She is nothing like either breed tbh she’s very quiet, RARELY makes a noise at all. But the most loving loyal dog I’ve ever met. She became EXTREMELY attached to my three daughters within the first two days. We had to leave and she opened the dog door, hopped the fence and chased the car down 😅. Well before I could get her fixed she went into heat and my parents German shepherd got her. The pups are BEAUTIFUL!!! They will be 7 weeks on Wednesday. One ended up a grey brindle with one bright blue eye and one dark blue. I have two with hazel to green. And one who is fluffy lol.
Your dogs are beautiful. I'm Terry from Indiana. I my dog Lyric was rescued by my daughter. She was found on the highway after an unfortunate car accident with fatalities. And she did have injuries. She was very terrified! Myself being an avid dog trainer and lover found her a challenge. 6 months a thorough training she will walk off lead anywhere I want her to go. She stops walks looks both ways. She is very smart. You're right that is part of the breed one thing in your video you described your dog Cypress exactly how I've commented on my dog LOL. She opens doors. When it comes to solving problems she is on it. Not only opens doors but gates and windows if she feels the need. She is definitely the escape artist LOL. I live in a small town in a house was a good size yard and no fence. My dog can actually stay outside for hours without disrupting anyone in the neighborhood the worst thing she does is Chase a cat. Just wants to play will not kill them as far as I know LOL. She will kill a bird. My dog loves to swim I first got her. I was selling paint at the time and making a delivery in a town of mattimore Indiana there's a canal. She saw a duck, then she took to the water was catching the duck while swimming. Thankfully the duck took to the air before she caught it cuz she would not halt to my command LOL. Those two in Long webbed toes he has really do their job. Lyrics big for herb Reed at about 70 lb. Thank you for your video
WELL now! I just learned a whole lot about a breed I didn't know anything about! The cool thing is that I have one. I now know why, out of a litter of 9, there were 7 merles. I'd had several Aussies, where merle is a recessive gene, so I couldn't figure that out, but everything is so spot on as far as the breed characteristics, especially aa there are two other dogs from the same litter not far from us - displaying the full range of traits that you described. Luckily for us, our dog Violet is a lover, but I think anyone who thought they could mess with us would be put on notice PDQ. I'm not saying that the local SPCA had the good fortune to have a litter of pure bred Catahoulaa, but the info you gave in your video filled in a lot of blanks. So, thanks! Violet is a smart, loving family member, and will be with us, running around our country property and living her best life for the rest of her days. Cheers! From New Brunswick, Canada.
Love this video! We are picking up our Catahoula pup next weekend. I've known about the breed since I was a kid- and always had them on my "dog bucket list". Finally have the chance & the right situation to add one to the family. We have a small farm in SD and enjoy hiking & hunting, and we live by the river so we're frequently taking the dogs to go swimming. I really enjoyed seeing this video comparing three different individual dogs to show some of the variation in temperament and size. Beautiful dogs. Can't wait to bring ours home; we also have a very high energy Dutch Shepherd/APBT mix female who is just too intense for our senior dogs, and she is often left with no play buddies here at home. Watching how yours play, I am pretty confident our new boy (Gator) is going to be the perfect buddy she needs :)
Thank you! I bet your Dutch Shepard mix will absolutely love having a Catahoula for a playmate. It's so great when you have older dogs that can help mentor a new puppy. Sounds like he will be very happy in his new home.
I had a 10 year old rescue Boxer named Tia who also had creaky joints. I put her on Glucosamine with Condroitin twice a day with her meals. I opened the capsules and sprinkled it on her slightly moistened high grade kibble. Inside of 4 months she was able to jump on my bed where formerly I had to boost her big butt up. She also lost her swagbelly . There was need! I believe that all owners of big and older dogs should try this regimen, it really helps them stay happy and active.
You won't regret it, they are hilarious and the best companions... But if you do get one make sure you give them a place to run around... They have an insane amount of energy
I've got a solid coat catahoula. He's a beautiful cinnamon color with green gold eyes. His name is Roman and he's awesome. I don't recommend this breed as a first dog or as a young child family dog. Get a lab. But if you're a hunter or livestock farmer, You can't go wrong. Independent is their first name. Stubborn but smart as hell.
Been looking at different breeds of herding dogs because we are, hopefully, going to be moving soon to a place with some acreage. We wanted something with a lot of the same characteristics as our shiba-chi that died last year. Malakhi wasn't a huge barker, but he definitely let you know someone was coming. He recognized friends with a light "oof", family by going to the door b4 they knocked, and sent strangers a clear signal to behave themselves or they'd be "escorted out". Short haired, brave and high energy...soooo amazingly smart and independent. Guess you can tell I miss my babydog, and yes, he slept with me. He was actually 22 when he passed, confirmed by vet and the lady we got him from. Anyways, I watched several vids about Catahoula's before coming across yours. You answered my 2 final questions...rats gone, good around chickens and sheep if trained. I'm pretty set on getting 2 of them now. Thanks!! Btw, your place is beautiful! You are truly blessed! Very happy for you!🤗 Can see the joy in your eyes. That's what I'm hoping to replicate on my own place, quiet, peaceful joy full of days spent with animals and gardening. Continued blessings
Wonderful video. My Lucy Anna is a NALC registered blue leopard. Year and a half old large build. She's amazing. But definitely not for everyone. As a puppy they will try your patience in every way. And won't tolerate a strong hand.
My catahoula, Arin, hates the heat. We laugh and call her the wimp. She was born in southern Louisiana, and raised outside until we picked her up. By that first night she decided air conditioning is her thing, and outside in the heat is not. Maybe as she gets older, only 3 months right now, she will do better with the heat.
we rescued our little girl. she has the brown merle with leaopard markings with a glass eye. she is exactly as you ahve descibed you dogs. but she is not aggressive. she is very scittish with all of the protective of "her house" traits. i hhave alot of property and she has free reign of. i see you have the shock collars too. i have the same and use them every day for recall purposes. her name is "Remi"ington. loved your video.
greetings from Germany , .I love these dogs since i have one . On my US / Mexico holyday i found some Dog puppys in the desert and safe 1 life of the puppys but dident know what im rescuing there for real . @@YouCanFarm yes she is my Souldog / Soulpartner . So gentle and calm to other dogs and people , but sometimes a little to territoral in some situations . When i sit with a few frinds for example for a breakfast , and ather dogs come in there is a chance that she reacts a little angry cause its HER breakfast , other ppl. are HER frinds to pet and snuggel only HER ! :) Next day same pll same dogs but no breakfast she is an absoluty calm an playfull dog with other dogs . But she is 2 years 11 Month old so in may she grows up to three and i think let she bee an teenager dog so long she would be an happy often very goofy funny Catahula Leopard Dog plott hound Mix 🥰
Absolutely loved this Julie! Just found your channel. Your presentation and content rich explanations are superb. Have an Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog from Georgia and live in a rural setting in central Oregon. They actually have a little Catahoula in the breed. Keep up the great work - love the content on the dogs as the info you share can be applied to the "real world". I am sure many of your subscribers have working farm dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. Thanks Again!
I have a black mouth cur in florida, they are similar so full of energy I didn't even have to Train him to hunt squirrels or hogs is all Natura instincts, hard working dogs and a great family dog.
My Catahoula came from champion hog dogs, she doesn’t care about hogs, but will track deer and, unfortunately the free roaming goats from across the street. She is super smart, can open doors, and knows all the commands. She will follow them even when she doesn’t want to, with a lot of vocal grumbling. Absolutely right, that this breed will bully you. You have to not take their sh!t, and they’ll respect you. (Consistency, consistency)-don’t raise your hand ever, just stand fast until your dog obeys your commands, ignore the growling and grumbling.
Yep, that sounds like a Catahoula. My Maple likes to grumble at me too, but she follows every command and loves obedience training. Once you have that respect they are great dogs!
@@YouCanFarm Your dogs are beautiful, thanks for this video. We’ve had pit bulls and Akitas before our girl-they were easy compared to her. She’s always 3 steps ahead and very independent. Should’ve named her Sassy, lol.
Your dogs are amazing I love looking and watching this nreed if i lived on a homestaed id choose this breed also .....I had a mix and she was the best dog I have ever known ..she was my shadow .She was the ownwrr of me... lol We loved swimming together....I miss her so much ,This is a wonderful video ....Thank you for sharing!
they may be bred to tolerate the hot humid weather...but my princess prefers staying inside in the AC, like her daddy lol. She does love the lake though, she can outswim most anything with her little webbed toes. Shes been an apartment dweller since she was 7 weeks old, and I was super worried about that when I went to pick her up - I swore I'd never have a dog without a yard or space for them to run...then what do I get? lol she has adapted so well and has never been a problem - but I still wouldn't recommend that to anyone, we just got super lucky with her.
@@elsie412ok I swore I'd never be one of "those people", but a worker gave me a dog sweater for her, and that was all she wrote. She loves her winter hoodies lol
@@Skoalcwby77 I saw carhartt has some things. Even in the ac she will pull a blanket up over herself. Dang smartest dog I’ve ever known. Her name is Zoe (French for life), but she goes by “Princess” or “Princess Babykins “. Strangers wouldn’t believe how sweet she actually is.
@@elsie412ok we have a Catahoula mix. He looks quite a bit like the purebreds except he has a fairly thick coat including an undercoat. And he loves the cold and snow here in Maine.
What a great video. I've never heard of these breed, but very interesting. And what a wonderful dog. But like you said earlier, not everyone needs a Catahoula. Someone here in Dayton, Ohio area. Someone posted due to a divorce, the had a pure bred Catahoula free to a good home. And someone posted this link. And said please review this video, before adopting a Catahoula. Hopefully they do. Most people don't realize a high energy, highly intelligent dogs. Need that constant stimulation. Thanks for sharing this :)
Great video thanks I really like this breed very informative, thanks for explaining their individual personalities wish you all the best on your farm with the loyal team
I just got a 9wk catahoula lab mix blue silver Merle w green glass eyes gorgeous! She is BY FAR the easiest pup to teach. We’ve been together for 1 week.. in that short amount of time she has learned: No Sit Stand Stay Leave it Bed Toes Paw I gave her a dollie to learn “no bites only kisses” She was the runt, 1/2 the size of her siblings fighting for scraps her entire life so having her OWN food bowl & toys is super exciting. Her crate is full of stuffies to imitate siblings, she doesn’t rip up her toys! This morning she was sitting in my lap while I’m making coffee, she was chewing on my shirt, I said: “No more biting, if you bite me again you are going back to bed.” Kisses, I have been showered with kisses ever since! She doesn’t bark or at least she hasn’t barked yet, she Points at Danger, her tiny body all stiff and intent is C U T E! Im Happy! Best therapy on the planet
was looking for a farm dog. found a catahoula/ rott mix at the pound. wondering if i should give her atry. we have many small animals including cats and birds please advise. also we have 8 horses
I’d see if you can arrange a trial visit with your other animals before committing to adopting a dog like that. Could be a good one, but I’d be careful since they can have a strong prey drive.
@YouCanFarm thank you for the advice. our application wasnt accepted because of us having farm animals actually. so we are leaning more towards a Labrador type
We are on our second catahoula our first catahoula was American bulldog mixed she weighed about 65 lb love the water and was brindled collared he passed away at the age of 14. We now have a 16-week-old male catahoula mixed a mixed with a neighbor's dog not sure what. He is of the hard-headed nature has taken some time to start house breaking him. We do have a pit boxer mix who is giving him lots of love and is helping to train him. We love the catahoula breed of dogs. Are Roscoe 16 week old puppy is very leopard in color he has black white gray and brown markings spotted all over his body. Wish I had a way I could send you a pic of him. Our first catahoula she was of the brindled colors.
I was fortunate to have Don Abney (of Abney Catahoulas) and author of "The Catahoula Leopard Dog" to appear on my 1999 production of Louisiana Songs for Kids.... on a song by the same name, "The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog," which features Don reading some quotes from his book and features his Catahoulas (barking) - ruclips.net/video/iWwmtyJhWt8/видео.html
I need advice, I just adopted one and it’s been a roller coaster. I have signed him up for daycare because me and my husband work a lot, but the daycare wants to put a muzzle on him because of the excessive biting. Should I do the muzzle training ?
There are a ton of ticks on our farm! We give our dogs Nexgard oral flea and tick prevention monthly and that works exceptionally well to keep any pests off of them.
I feed them Victor Performance dry dog food, about 1.5 cups twice a day. I also mix in homemade bone broth, any extra raw goats milk, as well as meat scraps and an occasional egg. Thanks for watching!
I’ve got a nearly 5 month old male, about 50 pounds and absolutely gorgeous. He has a fantastic temperament, but my family is worried about him getting aggressive with age. Have you had any human aggression problems as your male aged? Is it common for them to turn on their owners? I didn’t believe so, but my boy will turn out around 90 pounds and I worry about his strength if he one day snaps.
Catahoulas typically do not have the same bite inhibition that other breeds do. Once they are confident adults, they will use aggression to communicate their displeasure with something, even with their owners. It's not really that they turn on their owners, they just communicate displeasure like wolves in a pack, and will quickly take a dominant role in the relationship if their owner is not perceived as fulfilling the dominant position in the pack. My boy is 8 years old and still sweet as can be, but he has lines that we try not to cross or he will growl and bite.
My girl is going on 12. I was told she was a different breed, but she is absolutely at least *mostly* catahoula. I do not have a farm. And let me tell you, she is so smart it’s infuriating at times. Escape artist, bossy, demanding, competitive, high prey drive, but also doesn’t need a leash, and I think she understands most of what I say. And she can count. At 11, she has NOT slowed down. She and I have entire arguments daily. She tears planks off the privacy fence to get critters in neighbors yard. A few months ago, I found she’d torn 2 planks off the privacy fence, and dug a hole in the middle of their wood pile to get to an opossum in their yard. I just discovered she apparently recently tore a hole in the wall of my shed. When her prey drive kicks in, she cannot hear me. She’s fast as heck and loves to swim and hike. Also, when she escapes, she lets my other dog out, and then runs back to snitch on my other dog for being out. 😂 I wish I had known more about her parents because I would have known better the kind of training she needed. She likes to learn too but her need for routine supersedes that lol.
this has been interesting and informative. I know NC can be very hot and humid in the summer months. But like here in TN, it can also get really cold and does snow. How do the catahoulas do in the cold, wet and snowy winters? i am thinking that they would need to have a heated shelter for them when they are not working outside during the cold, wet and snowy times in the winter. We have had extreme cold this winter (lower single digits). Cold enough that I was bringing my heavy coated Australian Shepherd inside our garage at night. Our garage is not heated, but it does remain above freezing temps. I do not bring our dogs inside our home due to the extreme difference in temps from outside to inside. The dogs get to hot inside the house.
Our dogs come inside whenever they want, but they don't mind the cold or wet for short periods of time, as long as they have a dry place to get warmed up afterwards. When we took them to a snowy climate we put coats on them.
@@YouCanFarm Thanks for the reply. That is what I would have thought about them. And others need to know that too. And not expect the Catahoulas to be able to withstand the very cold weather. As in they must not be left out in the cold guard the farm for long periods. Or be kenneled outside with out a warm dog house.
We have a pittie - catahoula girl… 9 mos old now. We live in upstate NY and I can attest to the fact that our woodstove is her best friend this time of year… I also happen to know Canada is even colder! She does however LOVE the sun/heat!
@@april44 That is good, short haired dogs are fine but you do have to watch the cold. I need double coated dogs, they are both indoor and outdoor dogs, but when the coyotes come close to my chicken barn at night, they go out even in winter to scare them off.
I totally understand!! I also agree that this breed may not be your best choice! She gets cold quickly. It would not surprise me in the least if my girl went for a chicken instead of a coyote as she has shown quite a lot of interest in “birds of any sort!”
Love your informative videos. We rescued a Catahoula puppy. She is loyal protective, playful, full of energy. We are in our 70s and find ourselves not being able to keep up with her. She goes to daycare three days a week where she releases her energy but other days it’s just a one hour walk With us. Her best friend parents have a huge property which she enjoyed running around. Unfortunately, she has hurt her Besty and we’re afraid to let her play anymore. We love her want to keep her, however, we’re not sure if we’re being fair to her. Any suggestions? 14:39
Catahoulas do need a lot of exercise as well as mental stimulation. Taking her to day care or play dates with other dogs is a great idea, although I will warn that this breed has a reputation for not liking dogs of other breeds and for being dominant, so if she has already hurt her friend I would watch her for more aggressive behavior with other dogs as she gets older. Do you have any space at your home that could be fenced or space that she could run freely using an e-collar? Could you set up a homemade agility course to train her on? Developing any kind of training regimen that engages her intelligence and drive can help. They can be wonderful dogs but aren't really designed to be a sit around the house pet. Best of luck!
How much do you sell the pups for. And mine is a female that weighs 80, she 8 now and I'm wanting to homestead so she's a bit to old for that. I love this breed and probably will never have anything but a catahoula, words can't describe how awesome they really are, but I'd like to have one from working stock like yours
I agree, I will probably always have Catahoulas from now on, they are amazing dogs. We don't plan to breed again until next year, but there are lots of breeders registered with the NALC producing great working dogs. You can get a recommendation for a breeder near you if you call their office.
I "rescued" Merlin from the Love Train at the Ann Arbor Humane Society. He's almost 6 months, is 50lbs., and the biggest weirdo ever! Haha. I've had dogs, had a dog rescue, know dogs, but he's just odd. He began herding my 2 Cats, they're Seniors. Then he tries to play with my 16 year old Chi, who wants nothing to do with him. Next, he has tried to herd wild Robins. He will not go outside without one of my darn shoes! He ruined a pair of winter boots, so I set them aside, pretend like he's taking them, it's a big deal. Well now, suddenly, he has figured out how to pick up BOTH pairs of shoes at the same time, and runs with them in the yard. He also takes his dog blankets, beds, coats, sponges, paper, anything he sees really, takes it out in the yard, he's a huge Showboat! His fave is playing "Pull," he's developed an obnoxious growl while pulling, he doesn't care what, the other day it was woodchip bags. He's strong. And he started with a small puppy bark, 2 months later, he has the BIGGEST, DEEPEST bark I've ever heard. It would startle me, but luckily he ONLY barks 1st thing in the morning, b4 I open his cage to go outside and have breakfast. No other barking really. And he loves bones, finishes them in seconds. I got him these 3' long huge bones, he works on those for a while. Other afternoon, an Amazon guy was here, I went out the front door to speak with him.....and Merlin RAN out, across the yard, and tried to leap into the Amazon van! With that bone. He wasn't being aggressive, he wanted to show off his new bone. But that guy was terrified, tho it was funny. Just like his herding is so silly. He seems to really want a friend his size, to play with, so I may adopt another. He tries to visit any dog he sees, like out walking or at the Vet's.
Pretty sure i have a catahoula. The humane society said rotty mix but he isnt that stout and doesnt have that rotty look in the face at all. but he is well muscled. He is black with brindle trim. He sounds like a hound and his vocal range is amazing from super deep to ear splitting high. He loves climbing rocks, trees, fences etc. He also has the best hearing and site with also a pretty dang good nose on him as well. He also has these expressive dark amber eyes. I might be wrong but i think he has a good anount of catahoula in him.
No, Catahoulas have too strong a prey drive to be good livestock guardians, so we don't leave them unattended with our animals. They do patrol the whole property and protect the livestock that way. They will instinctively chase a chicken but can be trained not to hurt them. Ours are also family dogs, so they usually are inside with us at night, although if they hear anything suspicious they go out after it.
Sorry, I know this is a late reply, but I need to add my experience. I grew up in Louisiana, on a small working farm. I have spent all of my life with this dog. We owned Catahoulas from 2 of the 3 major lines. We bred occasionally, but not to sell - pups were given to friends or added to our pack. Our dogs roamed at will. They did not chase or attack any of our livestock or fowl (horse, cattle, chickens, ducks, geese, you name it). We even had cats with no major issues. Their prey drive is NOT that extreme. You train from puppy hood and you better be the right person for the breed. Persistent killers (generally fowl) are culled from the breeding stock or altogether. That may sound harsh but that type of attitude is what has made this breed so great and is why we don't have dogs who can't breathe or that have eyeballs popping out of their skulls. Or other things you see daily in an ATC show ring. The Catahoula was bred to be an all purpose WORKING dog. Hunt, trail, herd, guard - I have even seen them on point. If a dog did not do well in at least two areas, they were not kept. If a dog caused or required extra work or problems (don't let him near the cows! He might bite them!) He would be gone and those bloodlines culled in a flash. If yours are from herding stock, and you can't leave them alone with your livestock, I have to question who is really in charge - you or the Houla.
We have a catahoula, his name is Charlie. He could almost be Cypress's twin, he looks, acts, and barks exactly like that. His mama is our blue tick hound, but he takes after his daddy. He's too smart for his own good. He's the only dog I've ever seen who sits on the couch like a human: his butt's on the couch and his front paws are on the floor.
my catahoula is on her final stages of life, she is 15 and she is still spunky AF.. all catahoulas are long lived that I have met.. such a good breed of dog.. unique and bad ass.. to smart for humans own good hahah.. do yalls spin a lot when they play? mine do what I call a jump bark spin.. they jump, spin and bark in this one move... laaawl, bonnie blue when she was young was a ninja.. We lived in an area with 1 free roam herd of cattle..when they would come down our road.. there was this one fence post that bonnie blue would NOT let that herd of cows go past.. she would stand out there and stand the herd down, dodge any attempts to charge her.. till the herd turned around.. I have a million stories of her doing some crazy ninja shit in her life lol. The certainly are NOT a first dog person dog.
He sounds like a great dog!

Thank you for being honest about this breed and not pretending they are something there are not. I am from Louisiana, and you described them perfectly. People don't just have them as in the house pets. These dogs are always job and purpose oriented. They also have a reputation for turning very aggressive, even towards their owners, when they get old.
Yes, this breed is definitely not for everyone!
Why do they turn aggressive towards their owners when they get old?
Maple is your truest example of SW Louisiana dog. It has little to do with coloring, but instead the shape of the spine and tail. I am old and long for life with the dog gang.
That's interesting, thanks for sharing!
They are all from DNA tested lines of Catahoula.
Nice video!
Aww, thanks for sharing!
Sadie was a once in a lifetime dog. I was lucky to have a dog like her. It's hard to imagine ever having a dog even close to the person she was. She introduced me to her breed. Catahoulas are a wonderful breed of personality and intelligence.
Aww, yes they are!
Yep, she sure sounds like a Catahoula!
I miss my CataHoula Slick so much ,He will never leave me
They are such special dogs ❤️
They sure are .I'm looking for another.Ill never replace him
I have three catahoula/lab mix.
They are my best friends.
I don't have to worry about anything when I'm away from home.
I bet they are great dogs!
Thank you for that.
My Luna girl was abandoned at my fire station, so I brought her home. I had never heard of this breed, but you nailed it. She is all of the things you described.
I'm so glad you brought her home!
I really enjoyed watching your video. First time Catahoula owner. We found this breed by luck. We found him on the street in our neighborhood as a puppy. We love our boy Blue.
Oh wow, lucky find!
Haha, they are pretty smart dogs!
What a great video... it's abundantly clear how much you love your doggies, and how much they love you. What a great life for them on your big property. Wishing you and them much happiness and good health. 😊
Aww, thank you. They are my special loves ❤️
I love my catahoula. Never had one. She is a very special dog. She is so cool
They are super cool dogs!
Nice, thanks for sharing! He definitely has some Catahoula traits.
She sounds awesome! We are definitely a Catahoula family too.
Aww, I'm so glad you found each other!
Love your babies! Especially like your history of the breed with its roots in Louisiana. You both are fantastic in terms of training, herding and best of all love💕🐾
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing! Brin sounds like a wonderful pup. ❤
Aww, sounds like he was a wonderful pup!
I have a rotti catahoula mix and he is a dream. I’ve had catahoulas before and I fell in love.
He’s only under 4 months but he’s already tries to guard me. Living out in the boonies he’s a great alert and guard pup.
Sounds like a great pup!
Me too do you mind sharing pictures to see how yours looks
Thanks for sharing! That's very cool that you have a Catahoula mix, I know they are rare outside of the States. It sounds like you got a good one!
I just rescued a catahoula mix and we live up north now. It's so cool to hear about her breed! I love how much variation exists in the breed and how that makes them mess susceptible to hereditary issues
@@acurt14 Congratulations on your new pup!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences.
My boy Toby really likes your video. He’s 14 weeks and 28lbs now. Black with white chest. A sweetheart!
Aww, pups are the best! Give Toby some love for me ❤
@@YouCanFarm Toby is now 13 months and 60lb. He’s such a sweetheart. Loves water and chasing birds. I bought a new truck and he just barked at it. Still gets excited around people… he loves people. Becoming very vocal.
Yes, all true! We love our two. Loves training and hunting.😊
Awesome, I bet they are great dogs!
She sounds like an amazing dog, thanks for sharing.
Just had a litter of puppies July 20th of catahoulas ready to to Sept 20th so beautiful
Congrats!
Wow, Catahoulas are super rare outside of the USA. You should get a DNA test done, as there are 27 breeds of dogs that carry the merle gene.
I picked up my catahoula a month ago
My female catahoula absolutely loved my dutch shepard...he guarded, she hunted!!
Yes, I also started my older male on similar joint supplements. I'm glad your girl is feeling better!
❤❤ what a great video .. Love your babies dog's and they love you too it shows 😊❤
Thank you so much!
Lovely video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this wonderful breed. Lovely dogs.
Thank you!
Awesome video really love the breed and love seeing people making more videos on them. I plan on getting one in the near future for sure!!!
Thanks, they are really great dogs!
I have 2 as house pets😂
You won't regret it, they are hilarious and the best companions... But if you do get one make sure you give them a place to run around... They have an insane amount of energy
I've got a solid coat catahoula. He's a beautiful cinnamon color with green gold eyes. His name is Roman and he's awesome. I don't recommend this breed as a first dog or as a young child family dog. Get a lab. But if you're a hunter or livestock farmer, You can't go wrong. Independent is their first name. Stubborn but smart as hell.
I totally agree!
@@YouCanFarm My boy is currently caring for 2 new chicks we got yesterday. He's gone full Dad👍❤️🤣

@@YouCanFarm We brought her home today. Soooo much joy 😊
Wonderful video. My Lucy Anna is a NALC registered blue leopard. Year and a half old large build. She's amazing. But definitely not for everyone. As a puppy they will try your patience in every way. And won't tolerate a strong hand.
Yes, very true, they will test you!
Haha, sounds like a smart girl!
Beautiful dogs!
Thank you!
Great video, and I couldn't agree more. My dogs do it all!
Thanks, and I'm sure they do!
we rescued our little girl. she has the brown merle with leaopard markings with a glass eye. she is exactly as you ahve descibed you dogs. but she is not aggressive. she is very scittish with all of the protective of "her house" traits. i hhave alot of property and she has free reign of. i see you have the shock collars too. i have the same and use them every day for recall purposes. her name is "Remi"ington. loved your video.
Very cool, thanks for sharing!

I have a black mouth cur in florida, they are similar so full of energy I didn't even have to Train him to hunt squirrels or hogs is all Natura instincts, hard working dogs and a great family dog.
Yes, very similar breed and great dogs. You are lucky to have one!

Aww, she sounds wonderful. They truly are a special breed.
Yes indeed they're super smart and great at problem solving
Absolutely!
Beautiful fur friends ❤

they may be bred to tolerate the hot humid weather...but my princess prefers staying inside in the AC, like her daddy lol.
That's great that she's adapted so well, sounds like you got a good one!
My girl is an ac girl with a silk coat. We just moved to NC from FL, gotta find long legged dog clothes for her this fall, cause she gets cold fast.

I just got a 9wk catahoula lab mix blue silver Merle w green glass eyes gorgeous!
She is BY FAR the easiest pup to teach. We’ve been together for 1 week.. in that short amount of time she has learned:
No
Sit
Stand
Stay
Leave it
Bed
Toes
Paw
I gave her a dollie to learn “no bites only kisses”
She was the runt, 1/2 the size of her siblings fighting for scraps her entire life so having her OWN food bowl & toys is super exciting. Her crate is full of stuffies to imitate siblings, she doesn’t rip up her toys!
This morning she was sitting in my lap while I’m making coffee, she was chewing on my shirt, I said:
“No more biting, if you bite me again you are going back to bed.”
Kisses, I have been showered with kisses ever since!
She doesn’t bark or at least she hasn’t barked yet, she Points at Danger, her tiny body all stiff and intent is C U T E!
Im Happy!

Hello and thank you for the information. At what age did Juniper stop physically growing?
I think she was still packing on muscle until about 2 years old.
was looking for a farm dog. found a catahoula/ rott mix at the pound. wondering if i should give her atry. we have many small animals including cats and birds please advise. also we have 8 horses
Cool! I was lucky to meet him and his dogs in Louisiana before he died. I was supposed to get a puppy from him but sadly it didn't work out.
I need advice, I just adopted one and it’s been a roller coaster. I have signed him up for daycare because me and my husband work a lot, but the daycare wants to put a muzzle on him because of the excessive biting. Should I do the muzzle training ?
How do you prevent your dog from getting covered with ticks when it roams around freely on the farm? Are there no ticks?
There are a ton of ticks on our farm! We give our dogs Nexgard oral flea and tick prevention monthly and that works exceptionally well to keep any pests off of them.
Darn nice heads on those Cats! Cheers from Germany!
Well hello! Thanks, we love those big block heads!
Thank you!! What do you feed them and the quantity?? Thank you!
They are an awsome pack
Thank you!
I wish I had known more about her parents because I would have known better the kind of training she needed. She likes to learn too but her need for routine supersedes that lol.
This is 100%. Good video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
this has been interesting and informative.
Nice dogs, I worry they might not like the cold here in Canada. But hay, they are great for the South!
Yes, they don't have a very thick coat so they probably wouldn't enjoy the cold weather.
@@YouCanFarm thank you for your response, I'll do that.
She has plenty of time to be homesteading with you but will not be as quick as she used to be.
Aww, he sounds like a fun pup!
Sounds like a cool dog!
I hope the best for me i just got pitahola
Congrats!
I will always have a Catahoula(s).

I love your dogs 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you, they are pretty great!
🙏❤️ Love from Scotland ❤️🙏
Thanks for watching my Scottish friend!
Do they work as livestock guardians? Will they protect or kill chickens?
They don’t stay outside at night?
Great video! What tracker do you use? Thanks!
Thanks! Do you mean their e-collars? They are cheap ones off amazon, the brand is Funni Pets.
How long do these dogs usually live for? I know some bigger dogs only live 10-11 years.
