High content wolfdogs aren’t for most people. They’re better off with a German Shepherd or a Czech Wolfdog if they want that wolfy appearance with minimal care and dependable recall. The former are gorgeous animals for the right person. Be sure you have the time, space and dedication to look after them and do your homework first to determine if they’re a match for you, your lifestyle and your living situation.
When I was a child, I dreamed of protecting wolves and living close to them. I'm so touched to know that there is a woman who is actually doing this kind of work. It's wonderful to live with these beautiful, gentle, and proud wolves! Please continue to share and teach us about the ecology of wolves!
Yes! I underestimated what the 1 year old GSD/Husky mix I adopted would need as my Aussie/GSD needed what I thought was a lot but it was nothing in comparison. I have been taking him almost 2 years nearly (weather permitting) every day to a nearby dog park, that also was a big help with my depression.
This was a really good episode, Anneka . People definitely need to do their homework before getting one. Every type of canine has its own special set of needs.
I'm so glad you now own and have experience with wolfdogs. Your commentary explains the expectations needed to own one. I hope perspective owners are listening closely.
Amazing these wolfdogs don't have a typical wolfdog temperament, but are gentle and affectionate with wolf-like appearance. Reminds me of the northern Inuit dog, along with the Tamaskan and Utonagan.
@@lailahepburnandmischka true. I have heard wolfdogs have less predictable behavior patterns compared to dogs and wolves due to mixture of genetic traits.
@@animaladventurer well yeh, defo makes sense, pretty sure they're illegal some places or have some kind of restrictions or something for that reason. never specifically looked into it but I have heard they can't be service dogs
@@lailahepburnandmischka I agree wolfdogs are not ideal service dog candidates. However, Tamaskans, despite their wolf-like appearance, are known to make great therapy dogs due to their gentle temperament. Plus, they don't have wolf genetics in them.
I am a little confused... studies appear to show that early (pre-puberty) spray and neutering of larger dogs is associated with health issues, like increase in the risk for orthopedic problems. Perhaps you can do a video on this subject? Thanks for your videos. Keep up the great work!
And mental problems as well...when I was new to dogs we were given a Great Dane puppy by my vet, he was dumped at his secretarys house, had him neutered at 6 mo., he only grew to the size of a small female, he was scared to take him anywhere, I started him at about 6 weeks, but that didn't help. When we got him he was emaciated, ankles bulbous, ring worm...we got all of those things taken care of and he live to about 12 yrs old. I now know it is best, not to fix a large breed dog till about 1 1/2 yrs old, not an issue with small dogs.
If you can find a vet who will do it, you can also get their tubes tied or do a vasectomy like they do with humans and not mess with their hormones. The main problem is that folks won't believe they're infertile because the males still have their testes and the females still go into heat. To be clear, there are vets that do these procedures but they're rare.
@gullinvarg, Interrupting hormonal development is the reason these Wolf crosses are recommended to be fixed early. It reduces aggression and territorial behavior.
@@robinsouth8555 Not even 1 1/2 years old. Some large breeds take 3 to 4 years to reach full size and maturity. Getting them fixed too early can also result in mental immaturity. There is such a dog where I live and I can say it is truly sad to see a fully grown large dog scared to death and panicking every time it sees another dog.
This man knows what he is talking about, awesome he is helping this breed, hybrid’s, northaid, etc, we need more folks breeding all breeds like this man does.
Actually what is needed is FAR LESS people "breeding" both dogs and cats . Breeding should be highly regulated , licenced , regularly inspected and limited . Spaying and neutering should be a requirement for any dog or cat owner that isnt a licenced breeder .
Thank you for the information that you have provided with us they are beautiful dogs nice looking it's amazing all the information that you have gave us thank you very much
We were given 2 wolf dogs by my daughter. She had several. We traveled cross country with them at 4 weeks old. The mother had already weaned them. Kept them in the house for a couple of years until they were too big to carry back into the house. We had a brother and sister and had them fixed. They never knew a stranger. Loved people. Bo weighed 150 lbs and Mo toped at about 100 lbs. Would never take a treat without our permission. I could walk Bo and he would never pull on the leash. Mo had a crush on a neighbor and when she got out, she would run next door to see him. We found. Gloves, sneakers and a sweatshirt in our pen. I have a lot of memories of them and how smart and friendly the were. Sadly we lost our pony and the dogs the same year. Miss them.
I have just discovered your wonderful channel, an absolutely amazing job you have to be spending time with such beautiful animals. Thank you for the insight into the world of wolves ❤
I hope anyone who wants one of these beautiful animals is heavily vetted before being allowed to have one. There are so many stray dogs and shelter dogs now because of irresponsible humans. I dont think i would want to meet a pack of stray wolfdogs. I think they are fine for some professional jobs like guarding military instillations. But, i dont think average citizens are intelligent enough to have and maintain these guys properly. The animals deserve better.
I met a pair of brothers recently and they truly are huge. Very well behaved in a very crowded place with other dogs and people. My husky girl loved then as well.
Your videos are really excellent at revealing accurate animal behavior, wolves are such noble animals! And it was nice to see a Californian Animal Watch. Our high desert is beautiful, and a great hike!
I wish I had one of those wolf dogs I love to hear that how it's so majestic so beautiful the sound when they howl is so beautiful these wolf dogs are so beautiful 🐺🐺🐺🐺
My friend had one and he was such a trip. If someone came to the door, he’d either stand at the door and growl, and other times he’d jump in the tub and hide. The best is when they jump up on your kitchen counter. They are a LOT f work and you better know what the heck you’re doing and not just trying to look cool.
And another question: I cannot for the love of my imagine leaving my house for a trip, without my dogs. They would go insane. They have abandonment issues (rehomed) and will suffer from this for most likely the rest of their life. But many of my contacts that own wolfdogs, never leave for more than a few hours, as their dogs become extremely depressed without their pack leaders. How do you manage to do this?
All these wolfdogs are indistinguishable from the wild wolves they captured near Yukon, Northwest Territories Northwest Canada MacKenzie wolves transplanted all over the lower 48 West exclusively. They can absolutely be as large as dire wolves, which are said to also be related to dogs. Maybe from sleddog gold rush days or further back.
Let me help you out. The largest Wolf/Dog hybrid is a Canadian Greywolf mixed with a purebred German Shepherd. There was a breeder in Colorado in the 1990s who bred these Hybrids to Hunt Wild Boar. They were almost 175 lbs of pure predator. That was a Dire Wolf.
She was getting rambunctious, he was like o man, especially when she was in her hair, howling, she seemed a bit annoyed or over happy not sure but his face was like yea I’ll let you do this now but you know better 😂
They are awesome. I have a wolf dog that I have to find a home for because I didn't know what I was doing.but I love him and want someone that will take care of him.
That perfect combo is so rare bc you want to breed a more domestic temperament ergo dogs with smaller adrenal glands but at the same time want the look of a wolf who has a larger one. If you breed for temperament you loose the looks and if you breed for looks you don't have that family dog temperament a lot of ppl want.
Many compliments to this man who created this magnificent breed of high content wolfdogs....truly spectacular! Anneka thank you very much for this very interesting video and congratulations for your great professionalism...i admire you so much! 👏👏👏🫶🐺
Always dreamed of having a wolf dog rescue. Dream VS. reality though. Regular house plus a F/T job excludes it. You need a large outdoor enclosure with very high fencing (great climbers/jumping), with ability to do long socialization walks daily.
Buddy of mine up the street i went to high school with had a high content 3/4 type wolf. Straight up looked like a canadian timber wolf and acted very standoffish. Once i got to know him he was friendly but secretive. Its true that they remember things. Today theres no need for these where im at because we have plenty of wild wolves around.
What i see that people's around the world buy dogs because its more bigger and better looking like neighbours and thats its bad wolfdogs and dogs if you buy first must have knowledge about because its not decoration, i love wolfdogs and i will be perfect owner because i prefer my digs company like people but i don't have good environment for them so its impossible for me to keep but if i move to place where i wanna live then maybe i will tske ,wolfs its amazing animals and wolfdogs half wolf half dogs its amazing animals
Those are called DireWolves and they use to be extinct but humans have been doing breeding to bring them back. This one probably got loose from its captivity that’s why it’s by itself. What specifically does “high content” mean? I think you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Very true for 50/ 50 wolf dogs also you really can not imagian how much work it takes to keep one happy and healthy.
Not to mention that there is the Utonagon which looks like a wolf, but has no wolf ancestors.
