I am a guy in my 50s who left the army after a combat injury. I wanted to start exercising again but I could no longer do weights so I thought I’d try Pilates. I found your channel 5 years ago and it was a life saver. I just wanted to express my deep gratitude to you and wish you all the very best with your recovery. Sending love and positive energy your way.
You have been an inspiration I am 8 weeks behind you. Final drain out lots of complications with implants. Doing much better! I am now a cancer survivor as my divided to me today. Hugging everyone as well!
I’m having a DMX on May 8th and I’m so scared. Mainly because I’ve never had surgery before but also because of the recovery. Your videos are giving me some hope!
I just had my mastectomy 3 weeks ago. It was quite a fast decision. Biopsy on April 23rd, Pet Ct and fish test as and then the single mastectomy. Drains for 4 days. No reconstruction. Chemo next week. Needed 6 chemos and 15 radiation. As you’ve said, you never want news like this. No history of breast cancer in both sides of my family. It is what it is. Plan is to walk as much as I can. Been doing hands free yoga for the past 3 week. Will try swimming next week and some light weights. Don’t have my full range of movement yet. Getting stiffness on the side which I’m aware off and stretching every few hours. Lightning bolts of pain and some cording that comes and goes. I’m a pianist so I do keep my hands/fingers moving:-) Thank you for your sharing. Helps tremendously mentally that I’m on the right track. Working hard to balance myself again physically and mentally. Your videos are a god sent. Thank you for the other side of the world, Malaysia.
I am so grateful to have found you. I am a 7 days post op bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction extenders. Age 41 and HIIT train. Fining your way again and going slow is key. Thank you for everything
Hi Jessica. I am a registered Nurse working in Pre-op. I found your exercises after my hysterectomy and prolapse repair in 2022. I have followed you since. I wish you the very best. Keep the faith. You will recover fully from your mastectomy ❤
Jessica, your courage, vision, and committment to yourself, your family, and to your community is so inspiring. I will call today to schedule my mammogram, and stop putting it off.
Unfortunately, the breast cancer is caused by viruses which means exercise and healthy eating might not be enough. We need to get rid of viruses to heal our bodies.🍀🩷✨
I actually don't take BHRT. I have a recent podcast where I talk about how sometimes things just happen by no fault of our own. That is life. It was caught by my regular mammogram and I'm thankful for that.
Hello Jessica, thank so much for this update. I have already shared it with two friends, one of them, her daughter, who have had double mascetomies and reconstruction within the past few months. Although, I don't wish this on anyone, sharing your journey has already helped so many. Thank you.
I admire your courage and strength and very thankful that you have shared this video with so many of us that need to hear this. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023 shocked and confused and not knowing where to turn was frightening. This video will help so many others. ❤ God bless you for sharing.
You are a beautiful person inside and out. I have loved your videos since day one, I have 11 degree scoliosis and even though my curve isn't that big over the years I have relied on your videos my easing some of my pain. Thank you and I hope you a speedy recovery
Ive been doing your 15 min basic work out daily for a few months recovering from herniated disc. Its the best work out Ive ever found for me. Thank you so much for it, and wish you all the best in your recovery x
Thank you, Jessica, for your candor, encouragement and your updates. 💗I was diagnosed with triple neg, grade 3, stage 3B breast cancer at the end of December; I could not have been more surprised, as there is no family history of cancer of the breast. My treatment plan has been a two-phase, pre-surgical chemo regimen (TC/AC+ immunotherapy) followed by surgery in early summer. It's not clear whether I'll have a lumpectomy or mastectomy; I see a breast surgeon at UCDavis Med Center in early May and will learn more then. My oncologist is very pleased with the tumor's response to chemo, so I'll keep "plugging along" until then. I know that our treatment plans are different but what was comforting to hear was your description of "the up's and down's" of today. I keep telling friends and family that on my good days I am "chemo normal". I suspect that is much like your "post-surgical normal". I am so lucky that there are many wonderful resources in my community, including a free pilates class led by a PT who is a cancer survivor with special certifications in helping breast cancer patients. (I hadn't heard about "cording" (so many things we never knew we needed to know, right?) but as I have some lymph involvement I may need her services.) Love and light to you as you continue to put this experience in your rear-view mirror.
I am sending all that love and light back to you as well! I am so sorry you are going through this and I wish you the very very best on your own journey. I'm so glad you have such great resources to rely on during this time!
I have same diagnosis and treatment plan as you. TNBC stage 3b grade 3 with 2 lymph nodes affected. Finished my pre-surgery chemo in September and I’m 6 weeks post mastectomy and 4 nodes removed. No radiation but currently doing 9 rounds of immunotherapy and 8 rounds of additional chemo (xeloda). Hope all going well with you ❤
Oh thank you for this. For your honesty and candor. Im 6 weeks post mastectomy and its so good to know i will get there. Watched your cording video & will be interested to see your post surgical pilates videos - at some point i want to ge proactive & do something for me. Glad i stumbled across you. Hope you are doing well x
Thanks for sharing your story and your detailed update, it's such a big contribution to women's health The best is about how you recover, not many people knows how to share such important information Will pray for a smooth and faster recovery for you ❤
Hi Jessica, I visited your channel intending to find some exercises, but I noticed the post was quite different. I wanted to share my experience, which we seem to have in common. I underwent a unilateral mastectomy with reconstruction four years ago, followed by another surgery to align both breasts. It's important to mention that I've managed to return to my daily activities, whether familial or sporting, despite the challenges. However, I've faced certain consequences of the surgery such as loss of sensation in the upper arm and lymph accumulation below the shoulder, which I still experience today. I started exercising relatively soon after the operation, following recommended exercises. After six months, I resumed regular workouts, initially approaching exercises involving heavier weights for the arms with caution. I gradually introduced them, and now I can train 3-4 times a week without any limitations. I wanted to send you support and a big hug, and I wish you a speedy recovery.
All the best with your recovery. I’m sure you are helping many women and their loved ones cope with such a momentous occurrence in their lives. My mother had a mastectomy way back in 1964 - a time when there was no support - either in hospital or out. She coped as well as could be expected and was soon back keeping the family on course. ❤
The fog and not yourself was a huge issue for me! I finally went for acupuncture and it worked after only 3 sessions! I recall telling my oncologist I just want to feel like myself again! Finally I did after acupuncture treatments! I had early stage ER/PR+ Her2- my oncatype was 13, so no chemotherapy, lumpectomy and 3 lymph nodes removed - I saw an osteopath for arm issues, 15 radiation treatments which ended Feb 2023! I’ve been on Anastrozole for one year with minimal manageable side effects! Every day is a gift! I am cancer free and hope I remain that way and don’t have to go through this again! Mine was not felt, no lump, the size of the tip of my baby finger, Stage 1 and was picked up on a mammogram! It really seems like ages ago and a bad dream! Good luck to you! You’ll be back to normal before you know it!
Thank you for always sharing your experiences and being so vulnerable just to to help us through our journey. Wishing you a speedy (continued) recovery!❤
Thankyou so much for your positivity and all the amazing free content you provide. I have found it such a support following 3 surgeries in the last year. I wish you all the very best in your future🙏💗
Thank you for sharing your experiences! It’s a service to so many of us going through similar things. I also had a bilateral mastectomy 12 weeks ago for early-stage cancer detected on my first-ever mammogram (no signs or symptoms). I have tissue expanders that I will be trading for implants in May. I was also fit and very active (yoga teacher), and it has definitely been a learning experience trying to get used to my new body. I was initially overconfident about my ability to bounce back and did too much too soon (handstands at week 8), and after encountering a setback (pain/inflammation), I’ve had to ease up and focus on rebuilding more slowly. I also got axillary cording on the cancer side (at 3 weeks) and am seeing an oncology OT, which has been helpful. It has mostly resolved, but still comes and goes a bit. I find stretching and massage both make a big difference). Recently I’ve started exploring brief hangs from monkey bars to help stretch, and that seems to help too). Wishing you all the best going forward as you process these changes both physically and emotionally and get back to doing the things you enjoy. Again, thank you for sharing your story - it is really helpful to hear others’ experiences.
Thank you for sharing! I wish you the very best on your own journey going forward (and my goal is a handstand again in a month so I'm working on it slowly 😀)
Thank you Jessica. I know how hard it has been for you to talk about this. I think you are amazing for using your platform to lift up and help other women. You are truly an inspiration to me. I found you during lockdown 2020 and I’ve stuck by you since. Sending so much love and positive energy to you and your family.
I went through this last year. I'm amazed at your strength in dealing with it. You really are an inspiration to us all. Thanks for everything that you do 😊 x
Hi there, I am so glad to find your Pilates videos and your videos about your breast surgery. All very relevant in my life at the moment. ❤ Would you mind please explaining, from a physical therapist and Pilates instructor perspectives, a little bit more about why you did not choose a DIEP flap surgery. I know that is always an option even after reconstruction with implants, but want to know what I do NOT know. Thank you so much and continued healing, physically and emotionally.
Was the bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction your choice, since you were at stage 0, if I recall, and no lymph nodes involved? Isn’t it too drastic? What were your other options? I am amazed to see you in that shape and ready to move forward. Your honesty and realism are inspirational and educational! May God continue to bless you and give you hope and strength!💕🙏
I did not have other options and I discuss this in depth in previous videos and in my full Q&A podcast episode that came out today. Everyone has to make their own choices when presented with this life changing diagnosis and everyone's situation is completely different and personal. I don't believe anyone makes a choice that's "too drastic" in the face of a cancer diagnosis and we all do the very best we can with what we are given 💗.
Still waiting for more biopsies (second round, based on MRI) before surgery. I haven't not seen or heard anything about nerve grafting with mastectomy before. I just looked it up, based on your video. How is the healing going now? Do you have any sensation? Thank you for sharing your journey. You are helping me more than you can ever imagine.
I understand that each have our on journey but I would love to understand why you are not taking a hormone blocker. I am 2 weeks out and I believe they are going start me on a blocker, I did not have any lymph node’s involved but I had 2 types that are invasive And non invasive in each breast. Thank you for all the encouragement 🙌🙌🙏
Having my double mastectomy and lymph node removal (+) next week. Either implants or expanders (surgery time decision) Thankful for your posts and inspiration
Hi Jessica. I am following with great interest your cancer journey. I am a three time survivor myself. I am a little surprised by this content because of the post surgery videos you have published. It appeared that aside from there being no pushups etc you've been progressing quite well. Are any of those videos re-published from before surgery? You look so wonderfully fit in them all.
I have recorded everything about my mastectomy in real time and I have only been transparent and honest about that. Some workout videos were recorded prior to my surgery, but all the mastectomy content has been recorded after.
@@Jessicasvalant I hope you haven't misunderstood me. I meant that I was surprised to hear how much discomfort you're experiencing based on your videos but perhaps those were the ones prior to your surgery.
I hope you are doing well, you explain everything so well. I can’t find your pod cast? Have you been put on tamoxifen? If so how are you doing with it?
Today I am exactly at 12 weeks post double mstx-direct to implant-with 3 sentinel lymph nodes removed & clear...and no spread. I am surprised you were not put on Arimidex for 5 yrs if post menopause or Tamoxifen if pre menopause? This is standard of care I was told by 2 leading cancer center hospitals Dana Farber & Mass General who recommended this to prevent any recurrence even though my Oncotype DX tumor analysis score was the lowest meaning very low recurrence chance. Did you opt out of the meds because of side affects? I have not started taking Arimidex yet as I am still recovering, albeit well and dont like the side affects I have heard about. I may start it and see how it goes. Also I want blood work first and bone density scan first as a baseline. It was nice to see someone at the same stage, same treatment and hear some days are good and some are tiring. I hear ya! I am doing well but feel changed by it all. It does take a year. I am very grateful. I am a yoga teacher who eats and lives cleanly. I think I just now post physical pain have some bandwidth to do the mental and emotional recovery. Like being hit by a train wondering what happened. The opening of jars and car doors were surprises for me, too. And opening windows! Who knew one needs one's pectoral muscles so much? Thank you and good luck! 💪❤
I’m trying to decide what I want to do for my surgery. I’ve been leaning towards a mastectomy more and more. I definitely would do reconstruction. My surgery date lines up for the surgical oncologist and the plastic surgeon. I have a few more weeks before my surgery date to decide but I’m curious on how you’re doing now after it’s been a little more time since your last update. One thing that has been on my mind a lot is the loss of feeling in the breasts. I’ve heard that with mastectomy implants that there is almost total loss of feeling. I have young toddlers that cuddle me and it makes me so sad to think that I may never be able to feel their little hugs again (or hugs from other loved ones). You’ve mention you were able to do the nerve sparing procedure as part of your reconstruction. How is that going now? I’d love to hear how you’re doing and would love to see a new video update if you’re open to sharing more. Thank you!

Thank you!
Best wishes!!!!

I do have a question about liking your videos after I watch them. I don’t know how to do it. Can you please send instructions?
There is a "thumbs up" under the video to like it :)
How come you had your implant on the same day of your surgery without expander? Is it possible?
I talk about this in the podcast episode I mentioned in this video
