HEY JON I OPENED UP A BAKERY BECAUSE OF YOU
Good for you
It’s amazing how the people that teach really make a difference.
Stay safe everybody :)
Wow 😳😲 awesome
Awesome CONGRATS 🎉
Wow!
THANK YOU!!! I have been making sugar cookies with royal icing for years now and I never can get my base icing firm enough without adding extra powdered sugar (making it a little too sweet). Turns out, I'm not mixing it long enough. Also, I love how you leave in mistakes and show how to fix them. A small tip for you though, for the stocking, start with red next time. Then do the white with sanding sugar. That way there is no gap between the colors. Also, for the snowman's nose, you can just make a big orange circle and then use a toothpick to pull it out in the direction you want to make the point. :) Love your videos! You're fantastic!
You sound like you know what you are doing.

Congrats on your New York best seller. I plan to buy your cookbook for Christmas. Thanks to you I make wonderful no spread sugar cookies. Now I plan to try your Royal Icing. Thank you for allowing me to see your videos and being able to make wonderful treats for everyone
@@peggyturner8898 i don’t like your fit
I would like to suggest a tip I learned from Alton Brown. When adding dry ingredients to a mixer of wet ingredients, use a cheap bendable paper plate. It's a lot less messy.
Thank you.
That is an awesome tip, Sandra! So simple - and yet, I never thought of that, haha. Thank you! 🤗🤗
The best part about royal icing is that you can swirl and blend colors like an artist. I always let people know I need to have at least 1 week to complete my creations. It is very labor intensive. I also use meringue powder, and can refrigerate the frosting to continue the next day. I’m not sure if you can do that with egg whites. Also I use a dehydrator to firm up the frosting on the cookie when I add layers. Great starter & Informative video, John! 🎄
I found that the egg white royal icing survives the fridge much better than the meringue powder. I also found that the egg white icing was smoother.-I use a knife to spread the icing. Not sure this year they’ll be cookies, usually I made a few dozen gingerbread cookies.
How do you keep the cookies in the fridge? Open or in air tight container? Do they sweat?

The background music at 10:24 is actually Brazil’s national anthem 😂 And I love how somehow it sounded very christmas-y and went with the video
Yeah! I was thinking that I'm crazy hahaha but I could also hear
I absolutely love when you giggle at yourself! You’re an AMAZING cook and I love watching your videos! 🎄
I recently tried your recipe of carrot cupcakes, to make it a little cake, like a lunch box cake and I loved it, you should do a video of lunch box cake:D

John your videos have inspired me so much ❤️ I’m thinking of starting a bakery which is such a big step for me!! Thanks for your videosss

Congratulations 🎉
😭"You can definitely use a hand mixer if you prefer" I definitely do not prefer my $20 hand mixer over you're beautiful $350 kitchen aid. 😭😁
I love your videos. I already tried your sugar cookies recipe and it was so good didn't spread and taste good as well. I want to try decorating cookies with royal icing but my shaky hands is saying no to me HAHAHA But whatever I'll still try to make it 😂
I loveee how he shows that he makes a few mistakes along the way!! Makes me so much more confident and i know it's okay to do a few things wrong. I Loveeee your videos and I've used so many of them so many times ❤️
When I get a notification that you have uploeded a video, my happy time begins 📸❣️🍊♥️🥳😘.🥰🤩❤️
I think you made a critical mistake here. You should make the two consistencies of icing before coloring. Just keep in mind that the color will add some moisture. Also, you can buy pasteurized egg whites in a cardboard box, thus saving the trouble of separating the eggs and wondering what to do with the yolks.
Aww, you resemble my younger brother so much!! You look like his long lost twin 🙂 even your demeanor and your calm mannerisms. I love watching you and love your recipes I’m about to make your snickerdoodle recipe and excited about it!!
It worked so well, everything turned out perfectly. I loved the final result and I couldn't be happier with my decorated gingerbreads
John, you're my actual hero!! Your videos bring me life!! I started watching your videos, and I was so intrigued, it motivated me to start baking and now I own my own business! Love you🥺❤

I remember we had a cake decorating class when I was in girl scouts. That was about 50 years ago. We practiced on graham crackers. The icing was made of crisco, powdered sugar and food coloring. How I thought that was yummy I'll never know. I always thought that was Royal Icing. Thank you for showing how to do it right. 😋
What?!? I was a Girl Scout about 45 yrs ago (I still have my beret though some moths did a slight number on it, lol) but we didn't get to do a cake decorating class 😔 I did learn to bake in my Jr High's Home Economics class though. I had some great recipes but unfortunately I lost them. I had one of thee best sugar cookie recipes I've ever tasted. So sad it's/they're gone but grateful for the memories of both those yrs in my childhood...

@@jackybluj Yeah that's another one we didn't do. We did several outdoor activities. Camping, they took us to one of California's largest Zoo's, went to the beach. One of my fondest memories was the gathering at a huge city park after our yearly cookie selling where all troops from California attended. Again, lots of outdoor activities to participate in as well as learning which troops made the most sales...

Love you John! And your husband! But really though I appreciate all that you teach in your baking videos! Covid brought me to you and I’m so happy about it ❤️🤷🏽♀️
Mucho besos from Germany ❤️😄
Perfect timing! My kids and I are doing cookie ornaments (non-edible gingerbread) and decorating with 3D paint. We will be making edible ones soon and the ornament decorating is perfect practice for royal icing.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! Finally a recipe that works! I’ve tried everything in the past and can never get the right consistency until now! I’ve been using your recipe for 3 days now for all of my Christmas cookies and it’s PERFECT! My cookies look professional and beautiful. Merry Christmas!!!
I would LOVE to see you make a gingerbread house that's edible but of course stays together.
Can the remaining royal icing can be saved for later?
Just started watching and my 3 year old yelled, "SANTA! SANTA!" When she saw you! 😂
OMG! The shirt & apron!! I love them❤️ BTW, I’ve never made royal icing, but watching your video makes me want to try it!!🎄🥂🎁 Merry Christmas 🎅

Perfect Christmas time video! He reminds me of Ben from Parks and Recreation and the mood of Bob Ross becuase he’s so happy. I really do love these videos
I think this all starts with your perfectly baked cookies. The shapes are so clean. I want to get your recipe and start baking these wonderful treats.
I have a Question 🙋♀️. I have food colorings diferente brand and stuff , but when I add the color it taste bitter , specially the red one . What can I do ? 😢…Btw I love your videos 💜
Sounds like you have alcohol-based food coloring, which is the reason for the unwanted taste. Sorry to say but you'll have to buy a different kind of food coloring for this recipe, there isn't really anything you could do to neutralize the taste. I really recommend gel or powder, they do not have any taste to them and do not affect the consistency of the recipe
I don't know if anyone noticed or said this, but the background music that starts at 9m58 is the national anthem of Brazil, my country. I thought I was mistaken, but as I paid closer attention, I saw it really is the Brazilian anthem.
I love your channel had such a crapy day and you cheered me up so much I'm motivated to go nuts with Christmas cookies and decorations hohoho
John, I have been making sugar cookies with icing since I was seventeen and I am now 41. I used to make such runny icing or I would make vanilla buttercream which is too thick. Watching your royal icing tutorial is great and life changing. I got this Christmas already made up icing for cookies. It was too thick so watching your video I would add a little water and it made the perfect flooding consistency. Thank you John. You are an amazing man.
I’ve been looking for a good royal icing recipe. I’m glad you made one, your recipes are always the best!
Me too some have stuff have never heard of 😂😂😂
Me too some have stuff have never heard of 😂😂😂
Thank you for showing all the great techniques. I've always wondered how people got cookies decorated so perfectly. Awesome job!
I have one question...When adding ornaments/eyes/carrots/scarf are you using the line or flood version of the icing?
That is a very good question!
Line because flood consistency would start to flood and ruin everything. You need the thicker consistency for sharp details.
@@16Fishwrap16, thank you.
Ahh! this will be perfect for the sugar cookies i’m going to make this christmas!
p.s. I love the apron!
Oh wow it looks so beautiful thanks for sharing 🇵🇰💯
I could have used this earlier. 😂 Maybe next time I'll use this recipe. Brian coming in and taking a bite out of the snowman then leaving is such a mood.
And he bit its head off!! 😩
Imagine him, and Martha Stewart on weekly baking shows together. That would be great.
the fact that you exist makes me happy
I truly appreciate you being so detailed and dedicated to every recipe. I love how conservative & delicious your cookies look! You're awesome 😊❤
I love your videos so much , John! But recently I’ve had so much school work so I don’t have time to bake in the kitchen🥺 But I’m so excited for winter break when I can finally make your recipes🥰

Wow! John, thanks so much for explaining about the royal icing ... I could never get the right consistency and now I know why...you are my hero!!! Greetings from Roatan, Honduras!!!🌴🌻
When I was a kid my mother made cut out cookies, dozens of them. However when we frosted them we used just powdered sugar and milk frosting and frosted the cookies on the bottom side. They were much easier to frost and ended up being very neat. 😃
I still use that icing for my Christmas cookies!
Plz share recipe
Could you share the recipe please?
Hi! I love to bake and really like your idea of just easily made frosting on the bottom of the 🍪...alot quicker for sure! Happy Holidays everyone!
@@youtubetarwa8316 I don't have an actual recipe, I always just added enough milk to it the right consistency. You can always add more milk.
Thanks for this ❤
I remember my grandmother teaching me the tricks in cake decorating. I was in 6th grade then, no piping bags - just filling the small tip every time you run out...it was worth every effort. 🥰
Sometimes I just use white on all my cookies. After they set, I add gel food color to a color pallet and use a high proof alcohol to "paint" on what I want. It leaves no alcohol flavor. It also looks very similar to a water color painting if your inro that. I find it much easier to decorate with the kids that way.
I love how the Brazilian hymn just randomly played there like a Christmas song 😂😂❤️❤️❤️
Excellent video, John
I Will b Baking cookies this year and your tips were very helpful. BTW, LOOOOVEEE the apron 😄
You can also buy powdered egg whites. Works just as well.
How would I use the egg white powder? How much liquid? ❤

I haven’t even watched the video yet, but hearing your voice intro made me sssoooo happy & video received an immediate thumbs up! You’re wonderful, John! Merry Christmas!
This recipe saved my day. I made sugar cookies for an upcoming recipe video. I could not find the icing pouch I usually buy to frost my cookies at the store. I had to frost my cookies for the video. I looked for recipes online and this one seemed so perfect. I made it and VOILÀ! Perfectly frosted sugar cookies!!!! I will not buy icing pouches anymore. I just love everything you make. It is always so beautifully presented.
Hi John can you make a BRAZO DE MERCEDES.. i want to try making it for my mother, it's her favorite but i think i need you expertise in some parts...
*can i use powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar in meringue?
*How to make the perfect custard for filling?
*How ro roll the meringue without cracking?
You can use powdered sugar, but if it's the kind that has added cornstarch in it, it might make the consistency very thick. What comes to rolling out the meringue, I don't really know what you mean? If you want a sheet of meringue you could spread it on a piece of baking paper with a spatula and bake in the oven
Who’s here bc of faline

We not gonna talk about the pain in the ass that is trying to get jet black icing? I feel like that’s the hardest most frustrating part 🤣
Discovering black velvet cocoa helped me a LOT so you don’t use a crazy amount of black food dye, but any advice is so appreciated!
I have been wanting to try my hand at making royal icing forever and still haven't. I have no clue why it scares me, and I have made the dreaded macarons! 😂 These look so cute. I shall be working on this for Christmas.
The toughest thing about royal icing is working with it before it dries. But when the right consistency, you can actually just smooth it on with a knife.
Did you try it this year?
@@MargaritaOnTheRox I haven't gotten the chance to as yet because I've been working at building my channel. But trust, I sure will because this is something I've always wanted to learn for my self because I just love seeing those fancy cookie designs! 😍 Thanks for the tip. It will take trial and error, but thats the fun part.
Okay, okay. I've been gun-shy about the royal icing because if the flooding consistency. You were literally talking DROPS of water! Definitely going to attempt this now. I bought meringue powder last year and chickened out! (Egg whites... chickened out... oh man.)

Hi John I get so intimidated using royal icing... U are jus so authentic and u jus gave me a confidence boost seeing u and your struggles in this video. Thank you sooo much.

I love this kind of icing but I could never find the recipe for it because I never knew the name.
I just tried this recipe for my gingerbread house gifts this year. It is a great consistency and held together really quickly. I will be switching to using this recipe from now on, thanks for the recipe!
You can pasteurize your eggs or you can use meringue powder 1 TBSP for a cup of sugar and some water 🎉
I love all of your videos. Please come and bake with me. BTW, your chocolate crinkle cookies are ALWAYS a hit 😋
I made those last week, and they were a hit!! Stunning, and delicious!
The best recipe ever and also the details are so important!!! So many things I didn't know and so many things I did wrong😅 oops
I've tired to make royal icing many, many years ago but it only came out once. I was also taught to use meringue powder.
I've made your easier royal icing with corn syrup twice last year and I loved it.
I've got leftover egg whites in my fridge from your German Chocolate frosting that I've been saving.
I'm definitely going to try it again. You gave a lot more details and tips.
BTW, your German Chocolate frosting is amazing! I put it on top of your brownies and people love it. I'm about to start making your Banana Cream pie. I'm so excited.
Love seeing your husband enjoying your cookies lol. That was cute.

Very good. There is also something called a scribe tool with a sharp point for decorating and smoothing out fine details.
John, I love them all but I think the snowman is my favorite too. Great job you did. They are so perfect.
Can I use an alternate to raw egg whites instead? Please help! Thanks. Hehe 😁
You can use powdered egg whites
They look so adorable!! I'm so near my due date I'm not sure I'm going to be baking this year. I usually make a big batch and decorate them with my step son. They make great presents from a child to aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Last year he asked to give some of them to his friends! I found it adorable. I'll try to make at least a few, so he doesn't already feel our traditions are gone now that little sister is on the way.

Now I just wanna know what song he was talking about. The only "Don't Walk Away" that I know was from Xanadu. Love E.L.O. Also, there's some solid chaotic energy at play when a guy walks in and bites the head off your favorite snowman cookie.
Meringue powder is more shelf stable and keeps you from a chance of salmonella, instead of egg whites. Also a lot less messy and no wasting of yolks. Ultra fine powdered sugar also removes the need for sifting. Biggest tip though, make sure your bowl is clean and has absolutely no trace of anything with oil in it. I keep a bowl for non-oil stuff and one for oil stuff for my mixer.
Yes, but meringue powder is pretty expensive - why not just say "make some meringue cookies and blitz them in a food processor?"
@@jayceperlmutter4317 It's like...$7 at Walmart and that's for the Wilton brand name stuff, and is enough to make a crapton of icing. Cheaper than the same number of eggs to make it with, while wasting yolks
@@bridgethaines7127 well - I still disagree. I am not familiar with the volume of a "crapton", but my grocery store eggs aren't $2.33 each, and I don't waste any yolks. I can't really speak to how shelf-stability calculates into your equation as I don't only use eggs for making icing. But you do you -
