After a lot of searching RUclips this is exactly what I was looking for. A straightforward no nonsense clear and consise helpful guide. Thank you. In my workshop I rip down wood on a table saw and spin it on my lathe at around 1,500 rpm while using chisels that can rip your head off and don't think anything of it. Sit me in front of a sewing machine and it scares the giblets out of me! Definitely a sub and a thumbs up from me ☺
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!
@Levi Kendrick i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
This family of sewing machine repair/workshops are excellent! Great tutorial, very clear, I've had my first try at this and can see that I am going to enjoy it!!
As others have said, you are a great teacher Clare. It actually feels as though you’re just talking to me, anticipating what I’m thinking, and answering it. Thank you so much. I’m actually really looking forward to getting out my sewing machine. 🙏
I broke out my Bernina 1008 to make a cat sack for our new kitten. Each time I use the machine I need to reread the instructions. This time I decided to learn about all the presser feet I have as well as explore different things. I found your video and it showed me how easy it is to do free machine embroidery. I wish I'd done this at the beginning of the Covid thing. But at least I found it now. Your explanation was clear and to the point. Often I find myself talking to instructional videos saying, "Get to the point and stop interjecting things you just thought about." Yup I know people who post instructional videos are taking their time to help others and do it for free. Nevertheless, when I see a well constructed video I say Thank You.
Hi Scott, I really appreciate our comments. It can be a tricky balance to get it right and I realise I can't please everyone but it's great to hear that you enjoyed it. I've done a lot of teaching so I try to incorporate the questions I often get asked. How did the cat sack go? I'm sorry I didn't see your comment earlier. If you're now hooked on free machine embroidery, you might like a look at some other videos on my channel: ruclips.net/channel/UC1v-pVQyO7l0v80c73pc6Cw
Absolutely fascinating. Been a sewer all my life of all different kinds too numerous to mention. The thing that moved me to try this was I was at an exhibition and saw some beautiful free embroidery landscapes. They were stunning. I walk every day so get much inspiration from nature and thought I'm going to give this a go. Trawled the web for info and ideas and came across this tutorial. Succinct and to the point, have bookmarked it so I can refer back if I get stuck. Thank you and may 2022 bring you health, happiness, peace and happier days to come.
Thank you Teresa and thank you for your good wishes. Let's hope 2022 is a good one. There are some more videos on my RUclips channel that may interest you. I create a postcard and I show you thick thread in the bobbin which may help you with your landscapes: ruclips.net/channel/UC1v-pVQyO7l0v80c73pc6Cw
Thanks you for a very clear and uncomplicated explanation. I am a complete beginner to sewing and was instantly fascinated by machine embroidery when I came across it on a project I was doing on RUclips. Most of the videos I have seen are American and talk about many products which often are not available in the UK not to mention sounding highly complicated. Thanks again.
Gday from Australia, thank you, thank you, have a free motion foot, but have been too scared to use, didn’t realise you could use a hoop to steady the fabric, going to give it a whirl now......again thank you sooooooo much xxxx
Fantastic tutorial Clare...I was stuck...didn't know I could raise the foot to fit hoop in so Thanks. Now my next problem is figuring out how to lower the teeth on a Janome...can't wait to get started.
I like very much your tutorial. It is very good explained and you are very, very technique. I loved the fact that you talk just enough to understand everyone. From Romania, thank you very much!
Loved this video and how simply and easily you explained this technique. I have an embroidery machine that I have been wanting to try to use for about a year now and a sewing machine that I received for a Christmas present way back in 2014 and still have not used other then to get out of the box and look at all the parts. I don't think I even sewed a straight stitch to try it out. I used to sew simple things all the time in my younger days I am almost 53 now and also in my healthier days too. I mostly did curtains, pillow cases, I made satin roses and a few other craft items. But you have me wanting to use both of my machines now. My almost 18 year old daughter (we are both August babies 2nd & 20th) hand embroidered the letters REP on a shirt the other day to wear to the Taylor Swift concert I am taking her to on 8/7 for her birthday present because Taylor's latest CD is titled Reputation. She will be so upset that she could have used my machine to do it in no time at all. But it means more that she did it by hand. She is hoping Taylor spots her in the crowd and picks her for a meet and greet. She has loved Taylor since she was 7 and Taylor was just starting our. My daughter plays piano and ukulele and she has all but one of Taylor's song books. She has learned every single one of her songs on the piano and most on the ukulele too. She played Best Day Of My Life by Taylor for me at church on Mother's Day 2017 along with a 21-Pilots song House Of Gold and I tell you what I had a few tears when she first started singing and playing but I was full out sobbing by the time she finished along with most of the ladies in the church who are close to us. I'm sorry I always find a way to brag about my wonderful daughter Macie no matter what I start our talking about. But thank you so much Claire for sparking my interest in wanting to dust off my machines and see what they can do. I am off to watch some more of your videos. And just in case you are interested or anyone reading this my daughter has a channel on here where you can listen to her play it is called Maciemakesmusic. It would make her feel so good to have a few more views. I hope it is alright that I mentioned her. I apologize if it isn't.
This has given me confidence in making dresses for my granddaughter I'm thinking of buying a Janome machine ... looking at this machine it's given me confidence in the sense that you can literally do anything with a straight stitch and experiment with other stitches... Thanks
thankyou for all the Tips Years ago i tried to Free Hand letters on my Walking Foot IndustrialSewing Machine i didn’t know yo could turn the Feeders off and i got very frustrated and never tried it again it’s kind of always bugged me that i knew there had to be a Way to acheive this i like the Hoop idea and i’ve figured out a way of slowing my Machine down so i’m looking foward to trying it again on my next time Sewing

Yes you can. Just lower the feed dogs /drop the teeth or if your machine has it , cover them up with the plastic plate that came with the machine. Look in your instruction book for how to lower the teeth

Love this tute! You’re lovely and easy to follow. You actually do take that “petrified fear” out of machine embroidery. May I ask what is the model you are using & do you have the embroidery module installed like the upgrade for the current B570 QE? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for your great videos! I've been trying Free Motion embroidery for a while now and sometimes it works fine, and other times I get loads of skipped stitches, birdnesting, thread breaking etc etc. Do you have any tips for smooth stitching all the time? I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! I use stitchable bondaweb, have cleaned my needle etc, and I don't know what else to try. Thanks!
Hiya, skipped stitches= new needle required and the right thickness of needle. If you are sewing through quite thick fabric and the bondaweb you probably need a 90 and not an 80. Birds nest underneath= you've forgotten to lower the presser foot to engage the top tension mechanism or its just not threaded correctly at the top. Have you tried just using some calico or cotton, no backing in a hoop? Make sure the fabric is nice and taught and give that a go
I usually use a size 80 universal and sometimes a 90 topstitch with metallic thread but not always. I often just use an 80 with metallic thread and its fine for me but the secret is not to go too fast
Thank you for that. Most informative. You have given me the confidence to give it a go. Yes, I am a bit terrified but I do want to be able to do this.. one day. Just have to hang on in there I guess.
Thanx for tips. But please give tips concerning the lose and tightening of the thread. Because often my machine embroidery gets tight and stretch cloth and it makes all embroidery messy..
Hello Claire thanks for sharing this nice video with very good informations I never tried to do any embroidering I am just starting quilting, my question is that I have an ordinary old singer machine do you think that with this machine its doable to do some embroidering ?
Thanks Marie. It depends on how old it is but give it a go. I have added a video to my own channel that you might like: ruclips.net/video/SUi-AA5ROQY/видео.html
Do you have any videos of the embroidery function of the machine? My Bernina 570 qe has an embroidery function on it and as a quilter I haven't really ventured into this part.
Yes, just need to either lower the feed dogs or put a plate over them. She mentions this at the beginning. You need to check your manual on how to do it
The free machine embroidery foot doesn't clamp the fabric in the same way as a conventional foot and its because of this that you can move your fabric in any direction. The presser foot helps protect your fingers from the needle and if you you are doing free motion quilting, it can help smooth the layers of the fabric.
I don't know if you can fathom what I am doing wrong. I am doing everything you say but the knotting underneath is so bad I have to keep taking the plates out and cleaning it all down. The juddering also ejected the needle, which, thankfully I was able to loop out. It was whole and undamaged. Is my tension wrong? Do I need to change my stitch size? And also, the open foot seems to be a long way above the fabric even when the presser foot is down. I know this is a huge learning curve, but I desperately need to know what I am doing wrong. Can you give me any pointers, please?
@retriever470 Hi April, knotting underneath usually means that it's not threaded properly or you have indeed forgotten to put the presser foot lever down as that engages the top tension. Your stitch size is determined by you as the teeth/ feed dogs are down and the free machine embroidery foot does not clamp the fabric like a conventional foot does and so it doesn't matter what your stitch length is set to as it won't work. Your stitch length is determined by how fast you sew with you foot and how fast you move your work. The Free machine embroidery foot with be above the fabric, it hovers and it goes up and down. Try not to let it distract you , just make sure you lower the presser foot lever. You don't mention if you put your work in a hoop or not? It's a good idea too so that you can get the fabric nice and taught. Hope that helps
What does back of the embroidery looks like? I just tried it for the first time last week after getting my darning foot, the back side of the threads bunched up with tons of thread. It didn’t look right but I don’t know what caused that since I have a brand new Singer machine Heavy Duty 4423. I am just a self taught beginner on sewing by watching RUclips tutorials. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! (Hawaii, USA)
Hi, I just wonder if you remembered to lower your pressure foot lever before you started? As free machine embroidery feet don't clamp the fabric in the same way that a conventional foot does and instead hovers above the fabric, it is easy to forget to lower the lever.
You don’t mention thread tension? Is it on auto? I did a workshop at the weekend on free motion embroidery and the tutor insisted that the thread tension was very loose. Trying her method at home on my machine has been unsuccessful
The tension was automatic. If you have a machine that is 15 years or younger then you probably don't have to alter the top tension. Some older machine you will need to slacken the top tension but what I have discovered over years of teaching people on all sorts of machines that no rule works for all machines. Have another go and don't have your tension as slack. Keep having a go. Don't get fed up and don't give up
Your video just came into me...wonderful you and others are teaching me to do this! Do you ever do an outline of pre stamped fabric and is it easy to follow and fill in in areas? Thank you for your teaching. Watching from Colorado USA; peace, wellness and safety to you and your loved ones; in Jesus name I pray amen.
You're a natural teacher Claire and your voice is lovely and soothing. ❤️
Thanks Tilly

Hello! Great video. Can you do this with a regular sewing machine?
Yes you can. Just lower the feed dogs /drop the teeth or if your machine has it , cover them up with the plastic plate that came with the machine. Look in your instruction book for how to lower the teeth
How about that, seems pretty easy now that you demonstrated it. Thank you!

Hello, thank you for the timely advice!!
Do I need fabric stabilizer/underlining if embroidering onto flannel, if I use a hoop?
Thanks again!
Linda S
Hi Linda you shouldn't need stabiliser if you use a hoop. If you didn't want to use a hoop then use a stabiliser. Hope that helps.

Hi Viv, thank you! The machine Claire is using is the Bernina 540. Thanks - James

Do you have any videos of the embroidery function of the machine? My Bernina 570 qe has an embroidery function on it and as a quilter I haven't really ventured into this part.
great tutorial. what should i set my thread tension at? i have problems with my thread breaking all the time
Hi, I had my tension set as normal. What thread are you using?

I'm looking for free hand embroidery machine can you please give another demo on the zigzag stitch again and start from the small size stitches please
I don’t have the right presser foot and have heard you can just use no presser foot at all, is that true?
Wow that looks Amazing as you said it is a little scarey lol but great tutorial thanks for sharing (smiles)

Wonderful Video! Thank you thank you!!
Thank you Kellie
Can this be done with a normal sewing machine???
Yes, just need to either lower the feed dogs or put a plate over them. She mentions this at the beginning. You need to check your manual on how to do it
Great video but is a presser foot necessary as yours doesn't seem to be in contact with the fabric ?
The free machine embroidery foot doesn't clamp the fabric in the same way as a conventional foot and its because of this that you can move your fabric in any direction. The presser foot helps protect your fingers from the needle and if you you are doing free motion quilting, it can help smooth the layers of the fabric.
Fantastic. Thank you so much.

That was excellent Claire xx
Thanks Jayne
What does back of the embroidery looks like? I just tried it for the first time last week after getting my darning foot, the back side of the threads bunched up with tons of thread. It didn’t look right but I don’t know what caused that since I have a brand new Singer machine Heavy Duty 4423. I am just a self taught beginner on sewing by watching RUclips tutorials. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! (Hawaii, USA)
That means you need to adjust your thread tension. Look in the manual that came with the machine or search for tutorials in "thread tension".
Hi, I just wonder if you remembered to lower your pressure foot lever before you started? As free machine embroidery feet don't clamp the fabric in the same way that a conventional foot does and instead hovers above the fabric, it is easy to forget to lower the lever.
Claire, thanks for the reply. That was exactly what happened. I forgot to put the foot down. Thanks everyone.

Could you plz tell me which machine is this?
@soulhealer-ZA Sorry for the late answer- It's a Bernina 540
Very great job
