Becoming a monk is not a ritual or a show and not making merit/s to have a good life after this (bribes) either. It is a self sacrifice for oneself (if there is a self, conventional truth vs ultimate truth) and for others. There is nothing fortunate, unfortunate, pride, sadness.
Every time I see a Caucasian Monks, I am filled with reverence & admiration. I always wanted to become a monk but I couldn't gather the courage & strength to make that commitment even though I am an Asian. Buddhist monks live an ascetic life; It's not easy especially for westerners, to live a life of a monk.
I picked two very important points from your comments. Monk's life been an ascetic, yes that is very true and that is how Buddha and his disciples lived throughout their lives, and we have forgotten it and now live in luxury (no offence to anyone). Secondly westerners becoming monks, yes it very admirable, and is a sheer joy to see them. Unlike most of the Asian monks, all the westerners enter monastic life on their free will, having experienced life. I have seen monks of Sri Lanka, witnessed, observed and associated them. Even though they do not want to admit most of them had been brought to monkshood by their parents, and grown up in luxury with all the creature comforts an ordinary Sri Lankan cant enjoy. On the contrary the westerner enter with selfless mind, as mind is the primer of all nature. Most of the Sri Lankan monks live in believing what is said with greater pomp, yet the westerners try to reason the teachings of the Buddha,, hence their simplicity, greater and mature understanding of the Words of the Buddha (not Buddhism) whatever left (not pure) after the parinirvana.
@@truthseeker7759 Among the Sri Lankan's there must be a pure monk(s), add them up and I'm sure you'll have more than the pure western monks. Don't get me wrong I'm happy to see more westerners take part in the dhamma, it is truly great and I hope more take interest. But truth be told without these Asian countries and their long history of support and present support, the holy dhamma would not have survived in this world. Perhaps more praise for those who support and live the dhamma are in order. And serious praise and encouragement to those who practice purely. It used to be in ancient times the purest practitioners were the most venerated, sadly our socialites now look to wealth as the measure.
@kusali11 I admire your interest. If anyone follows and understands the teachings it is hard to comprehend a pure version of monks, after all we are humans with different state of minds. Becoming a monk in Sri Lanka has become a place where you exit from poverty and live on the generous benefits from the lay and the government and at times they demand. There are monks in the parliament, who study law etc. As one of the Asian countries who shaped her culture and tradition through Buddhism, Lankans still support monks, firstly for merit making. But the is it the damma? I love this your quote "...serious praise and encouragement to those practice purely..." Yes there may be a few, which I do not know. But I admire the westerners who took up robes leaving behind their creature comforts, bohemian and liberal lifestyles, not to say whites are better than the Asians but for their own courage and determination to embrace a lifelong, 'poverty'.

Pride = Ego and all the delusions. No wonder Sri Lankans live in that egoistic land with so called "pure" Buddhism. What is who is Me, I, Pure etc etc. Buddha never taught dogma, rituals, ego, fallacies and fantasies. He also did not teach sciences, philosophy, psychology etc. We are not Buddhists, nor follower of Buddhism but follow the words of the Buddha.
Suwantha Darshana Are you some birth certificate Buddhist who was born into Buddhism? Your statement doesn't make any sense. Don't embarrass yourself brother.
What do you mean by “Dukkha” according to the version of omniscient Buddha’s? Well, trying to acquire happiness through myths (Viññāna) forming within by associating and attentive towards the outside worldly objects. Thereby we are compelled to undergo weeping, crying, sorrowfulness, lamentation, etc., All thoughts end up with myths and by believing & valuing such myths would help us to acquire happiness, would certainly bring us all sorts of unsatisfactoriness, sufferings, etc., the Buddha reiterated through “Pancha Upadãnak-kandha”. Since we are relying on myths to make us happy that wrong view and the methodology to get rid of such myths is extensively described in “Dukkha Nirodha Ariya Sathya” by the Buddha. The Buddha also insisted that removing something being within as a myth is quite possible.

To be a monk ia not so easy. Buddhist monks and nuns should be pureveg and live simple life without any luxury.but todays modern monks are mostly not following this kind of rules.buddha said if you don't have any food to eat then you can eat meat. Pureveg and simple monks could inspire us to be pureveg and live simple life. This comment is from the land of buddha lumbini nepal.
You're lucky it was a cool day and it didn't catch fire. After you make it a monk you're supposed to liquid cool it with holy water so it doesn't overheat.
