This documentary saved my life. I used to watch it some nights when I was especially down during the Covid lockdown. I was jobless and there were no jobs to apply for as everything was shut down, and I couldn’t volunteer for anything either, and friendless and isolated, and felt like giving up. This documentary gave me such peace. I used to have it on in the dark and it was like drinking cold water on a hot day. I am eternally grateful to the people who made this documentary and whoever put it on You Tube.

To be seen the Holy Light who comes from the sky at Jerusalem in the Easter night is the evidence of the good religion wich is orthodoxy. That fire ignite the candle of the priest and ppl there . That fire doesent burn anything for some minutes, you can put it on your face , clothes nothing happens. There are also other religions, muslims, budhism, hindu, but only at the christian orthodox priest the Light appears.

I am a Muslim but this documentary brought me to tears. In a world filled with some much ugliness and greed, seeing a group of people so devoted to their faith is really is touching and inspiring. I struggle a lot with mental health and addiction, but when I listen to the hymns being song from Mount Athos it is like everything falls into order within myself again and I feel peace and at ease with the world I live in. These monks are very lucky to have such blessed lives. I have often wished there was monasteries here in Norway, all the time since I first became religious in my teenage years, studying Buddhism, and then converted to Christ after having tried all other things. I really do feel I have found my proper spiritual home, and the more I learn about the proper ways of worship and history by living the rites I feel a rich tradition that I am honored to participate and continue. I have a question. i don't believe I could ever live with the distractions of my life like some of these monks, even though I want to. What do you see in this life that is so appealing ?
All the documentaries I see on RUclips are so irrelevant to my recent experience from Mt Athos. After having stayed there for five days, I returned to daily “normal” life, one week ago. The place was just extraordinary! To start with, nature and the ancient buildings were unbelievably beautiful and charming. However, there was no sense of relaxation or easy going; everything was on the move, and followed a strict schedule.Church started at 4, 3, or even 2 a.m. ( service times were different in the different monasteries) and went on from two to four hours, even six on Sunday. We used to walk in the night on our way to church admiring the stars. The galaxy was quite visible. There was no electricity in church, only candle light. The experience of sunlight coming in from the church windows during liturgy, along with the progress of the day was just unbelievable, one felt of being reborn. Lunch was about 9 am, dinner at 7 pm (20 min each, we hardly managed to eat the food provided!), all intermittent with worship. We slept very early (about 8 p.m.). The monks were like spirits, very thin, fast moving, very willing to help, some quite distant, dedicated to a life of praying and continuous work,. Religion was not an abstract concept but a living experience. These people live in the word of Christ, the Apostles and Saints. They were of strong convictions, serving us (the intruders?) with ample accommodation and food. Time was still, you thought you were in the days of Christ but you also felt that time was running fast and made you feel that you must make good use of your time while on earth. Having living Saints (e.g. the late Paisios and other living elders) around fortified the latter impression. Meeting people from other Christian nominations gave you a brotherly feeling. Life felt pure and genuine. I returned exhausted but with a quite different perspective on the world we live in.
Very nice,I am thinking about going there for a few days.My goal would be the top of the Mt. Athos.But hiking from one monastry to the next also.I have this unbelievable feeling of doing something very special.But also a bit of a fear,this journey back in time is not a trip for everyone.I heard I need a permit for visiting it,what about that ?

Remember you will need a passport to get the visa. Also once you are in let God guide you. The closest distance on going to top of Athos is Agia Anna skete. You will enjoy its a very unique place on the planet...

@@joelzkh Thank you. Honestly, I cannot really say I "enjoyed" something there in the way one enjoys a film, a holiday, a visit, or the company of someone. The monks do not live in this world. Things around them were not happening to please them the way we think. This is what I meant when I wrote that my experience was different from the RUclips videos. I entered a different state of mind, a kind of alertness, a different perspective. Self questioning and criticism was a great part of it. Knowing Greek will help you very much in your visit.
Stayed there for a week about 3 years ago with my father. An absolutely soul-cleansing, spiritual experience for us people "from the world". I'm an orthodox christian but I drown in this world's temptations. When we came back from Athos, I could see the FILTH that surrounds us.
Update: I just read that Father/Monk Epiphanios, the monk chef picking grapes, maintaining the vineyard and peeling and cooking shrimps in this documentary has Fallen Asleep with the Lord. Memory Eternal. 🙏 +
I would visit Mount Athos if I was a male. My good friend lives there. He used to attend my Bible studies. He is one of the holiest young man I have ever met in my life. He always wanted to be away from the busy world. I miss our Bible discussions so much. I hear that he loves it there.
Quite possibly one of the closest places to heaven we have in this world. Being raised in an American protestant community, I never really saw the extent to which a man can devote his entire existence to serving God. Eastern Christianity has been pulling me back after having walked off the path after childhood. The way in which the monks sing has such an emotional pain to it, A cry for help to their father. The desire to love and be embraced by God.

When my father came from Athos his eyes were shining like he had lasers , my mother says and other ppl. He also witnessed a miracle.A small cottage or whatever it was starting going on fire but in the way that it started as a small circle and soon the whole cottage was in small flaming circles. The day after my father told a monk about it and asked what it was and then monk was like... " oh its nothing...an elder fights a demon..its common .." smt like that i can't recall the exact words..Also there a beach or its the whole See (again I dont recall sry) where it is not allowed to swim etc. As they didnt know they went in but soon swarm of hornets surrendered them and they ran out...it followed them all the way to the monastery where hornets left them..the thing is that there wasn't a single sting or a bite to any of them..then a monk told them how it is forbidden to swim and they realized the message It is indeed a holly place.
The only place where one can see the beauty of the East Roman Empire aka Byzantine Empire and Orthodox Christianity in the modern world. I remember with joy the time spent in the Hilandar and Esphigmenou monasteries 20 years ago
The US televangelists and the Baptist movement would probably label them as heretics, or something like that. I mean, don't they see the Pope as some kind of commie pretender? Not religious in the slightest, but I do respect the sincere conviction of the monks of Athos. They give off a very peaceful and good vibe. The feeling of getting closer to some semblance of historic belief in god. Also, from an historical, social and anthropological point of view it's extremely educational.

@Eru Clusivus Wasn't advocating for Papal supremacy, which in itself is a funny thing. The history of Catholisism is very closely linked to the history of Northern Italy, at least from when Christianity came to Rome. Then Catholic history starts getting connected to power dynamics in Europe. In Particular after Charlemagne. As I understand it, Orthodoxy kept itself in and around the middle-east. Spreading easily to Greece, which could attributed to language, and possibly the ease of creating a society when you have a belief set ready to go. I will freely admit to not knowing anything other than superficial history connecting to Orthodox Christianity.

I was born in 1979. My first visit in Mount Athos, or Holly Mountain was in 1985. It was a window, a passage to older times. As soon as we arrived they offered loukoumia (a sweet, chewy delicacy, the usual treat till now), raki (alcoholic beverage similar to grappa-vodka) and Greek coffee. Then we were escorted to the guest rooms. No central heating, old stoves burning woods, no electricity, there were petrol lamps. I can still recall the very smell of the room. It was the way people lived for centuries. The faint light, trembling, shy through the smoked glass, the shadows on to the walls, the iron beds with stiff and uncomfortable mattresses, the chestnut wood floors, almost total darkness after 20:30 was very eerie. Not frightening but I was in awe. Monasteries were build almost 1000 years ago, most of them by people who chose to be apart from the world. They resemble to castles, due to often raids of pirates and looters. I will never forget the sky there. It was totally silent, I had never experienced such a quiet environment. No cars, no traffic, no voices, nothing. So a 6 years old son of an Orthodox priest was stargazing feeling out of this world. Countless stars, a totally clear sky and an underlying sense of Divinity, calmness and awe. Time in Agion Oros (in Greek language) has a different sense. Monks wake up at 2 or 3 a.m. They go to the main church, Katholikon. Their shadows, dressed in black, while they walk in a fast pace is something to observe. Services are long, in a dark church, there are only some bee wax candles to create some light, or shadows. The greatness, the strict spirit of Byzantium lives in those ceremonies, in these places. I loved history so, I remember I imagined emperors attending a Liturgy, before a crucial battle. Or people of past centuries walking for months to do the pilgrimage to Athos. When services ended it was around 8:00 a.m. So the transition from night to day was visible only by the high placed windows in the center dome of the church, the troulos. After there was one of the two meals of the day. Monks first and then all the pilgrims entered the trapeza (the dining room). Long wooden tables, wooden benches, walls covered in Christian drawings, art treasures, were the scenery. Meat is prohibited. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays food was without even oil. But it was so tasteful. Recipes from an Era where food was simple, healthy and crucial for all the works that these men should do. Bread was homemade in wood stoves, whole wheat. It had a sour taste, no preservatives, pure bread. There was some wine on the tables, fruits and a metal dish in front of everyone. Monasteries had the obligation to give hospitality to anyone asked for it. Meals weren't lasting long. A monk, after he took the blessing of abbot, read from the Scripts, or the life of a saint. In festive days fish was served. It was so tasty. After the blessing, everyone went to his prearranged work. One had to clean the tables, other to cook, agricultural duties, etc. Ancient water sources, forests of chestnut trees, oak trees, hazelnut trees, the distant sound of sawmills, donkeys used to carry anything, were the background noises and images of the days there. I visited two monasteries then. One was next to the sea. So I could hear the waves rushing to the shore, such a mesmerizing lullaby! The other was at the heart of the peninsula, near the capital of Athos. Karyes (walnut trees) was a village taken from the past. Streets were stone made, two-stories building around a famous church the Protaton, the house of one of the most recognizable ikons of Panagia, the Axion Esti. The village was in the backbone of the peninsula, in some altitude. So the air was clean, crisp and cold. But it also brought a sense to me, it was an ongoing ritual, my whole first visit there. At a later visit I had the blessing of meeting father Paisios (father for me is a much more close word than Saint). He lived in a small stone house alone. There was a big garden and a long cable to the fence. It was attached to a bell into the house. In the backyard, where he was hosting all the people who walked to meet him, there were some chopped logs used as stools. A small table, a jar of cold water, a couple of glasses and a box of loukoumia. We sat at the logs and pappoulis (grandpa) talked to us. He wasn't judgemental or strict. He had a very sweet sense of humor. I can also recall his very deep eyes. You felt like he was seeing inside you. I have so many memories of places and people there. One specific monk, who passed away years ago was my favorite. He was silent. But smiling all the time. In the eyes of my 6 years old self he looked like Santa Klaus, agios Vasilis. He was happy, really happy and I used to sit next to him in a corner outside the church while he was peeling some potatoes or just sitting. He talked only when he had something meaningful to say and he treated me raw hazelnuts. It was the first time I realized the importance of silence in communication with people you love and respect. All the above, after I ask your forgiveness for my poor English are recollections, memories from a time I had faith, a time when world was a better place. So after seeing this video I was overwhelmed by feelings, of warmth. Of stability, security. All the things I am deprived. First Christians were confessed in front of others. So, in the worst period of my life I can only confess to you my brothers and sisters. And share my humble thoughts . Please pray for me. Pray for a prodigal son, pray for our world. And let's have love in our hearts. Shaped in the form of a God, abstract or other. Amen.

The problem is, that if at the Athos they had been Roman Catholics, 60 years after Vatican II the Athos as well would be a resort for tourists, a museum or smth like, with no vocations... We had Traditions, and and hieratic, ascetic and mystic Church life, and Sacred Liturgy, and ... Now, you only have wordly mess, doctrinal chaos, bishops spreading heresies because of "pastoral challenges" and so on.. it's simply absurde. Thanks God, Athos were not under Rome, so they could keep living this sacred Church's life.

Most of these monks were highly qualified academic professionals. They decided to leave everything to follow Christ. Some of them felt the Divine call at a very young age.

A fairly small number of them were well-educated by worldly standards. However, such things are not given a great deal of importance, in the Athonite environment.
They're not following Christ they're following the False Catholic church and it's false Tradition which contradicts with the Catholic Bible and the King James Version as well.
I have never been to famous monastic communities such as Athos, Valaam, Optima, Mar Saba, St. Catherine's on Sinai, etc., but God has blessed me to visit a few monasteries in America. The monks in this documentary remind me of the monastics I have met and now count as friends-kind, wise, meek, and often have a sense of humor. I met two monks from the Holy Mountain last summer, a Serb and a Russian. Wonderful men. I believe I would love this life, and it would be good for me, but I am nearing 40, and have major responsibilities in the world. If God wills me to be a monk, may it be so. He will find a way. Watching this video also reminded me how truly far from God I am, because my soul is swollen with pride, grudges, and other stuff. May the prayers of our monastics save us! I was not born Orthodox, but am so by choice. I love our holy Church. May God preserve it unto ages of ages! Amen. ✢

i am a Roman Catholic, I am deeply inspired by this video, I have much admiration & respect for your love & reverence shown in your liturgy and daily lives...I believe there is a great need to go back to traditional Christian culture...I love the sacred chants.....its is indeed holy & beautiful, we should not change for the sake of keeping up with the modern world ..would love to see more videos of this extraordinary place

I have only been Orthodox for over a year, before I was a Protestant. I just woke up that Orthodoxy has existed since the 1st century, where the succession of the Apostles until now has been clear without interruption. Israel). As I understand, Malankara Church is unfortunately non-orthodox, because it has a monophysitic doctrine (as a part of Syrian- Jacob church). I hope that Indians will refuse monophisitic hearisis and be true orthodox !

Thanks for this lovely video. The best part of the video was the monk who shared his new socs with his brother monk. It made me see how simple they live. Devoid of many possessions. It made me see how there is virtue in emptying oneself out. My thoughts, what my eyes see, what my ears hear, what I eat, and what I say. Then filling myself up with only Christ.

Orthodoxy is the way to a spiritual life close to God ! Elder Paisios of Mount Athos said: When someone gives his heart to God, then the mind of this man is also seized by the love of God. He is indifferent towards worldly things and continually thinks about the Heavenly Father, and being divinely in love, he glorifies his Creator day and night like an angel.
Finally took the time to watch this documentary. The part from 43:35 to 44:30 is truly moving. I often find myself caught up in worries, anxiety, griefs, thoughts of not being good enough and not having enough, wondering what will give me peace and satisfaction and when. In reality, we can find goodness and contentment in everything, everywhere and at anytime, but at the same time we will never escape problems as long as we are alive, no matter what situation we are in. Only in death with God we'll be truly at peace. In the meantime, we must learn to persevere and not lose faith and hope, while enjoying what we already have. I have been a few times in the Holy Mountain-Athos and I would like to tell about the food there, which is offered for free by the monks in all the Monasteries and the Skities (small monasteries with a few monks). Well the food generaly is FANTASIC-VERY TASTY, especialy in the Skities. You have had an idea how is prepared in the documentary. The only problem is that you have to eat in about ten minutes! What an amazing piece of work! I've been to the Holy Mountain and can attest to the spirituality that envelopes this sacred place. There is no other site comparable to it in the Christian world. It has been nearly 13 years since I journeyed to Mt. Athos, and the impression that my pilgrimage left upon my mind and soul is indelible.

When my father came from Athos his eyes were shining like he had lasers , my mother says and other ppl. He also witnessed a miracle.A small cottage or whatever it was starting going on fire but in the way that it started as a small circle and soon the whole cottage was in small flaming circles. The day after my father told a monk about it and asked what it was and then monk was like... " oh its nothing...an elder fights a demon..its common .." smt like that i can't recall the exact words..Also there a beach or its the whole See (again I dont recall sry) where it is not allowed to swim etc. As they didnt know they went in but soon swarm of hornets surrendered them and they ran out...it followed them all the way to the monastery where hornets left them..the thing is that there wasn't a single sting or a bite to any of them..then a monk told them how it is forbidden to swim and they realized the message It is indeed a holly place.

This is one of the few remaining bastions of true spirituality in this rotten, greedy, material world. If you are physically capable, try walking up Mount Athos, praying along the way. When you reach the top, the experience is beyond any words.

I attended a catholic boarding school from the age of around 6 years old until the age of 17. I had no interest following the catholic ways but always believed in God.6 years ago( 47 then ) I found Orthodoxy ( Or Orthodoxy found me ? ). Ever since I have had this "Calling" or urge to visit Mount Athos.

I am a Greek woman myself and I would never request women in Mount Athos. Mount Athos is dedicated to Holy Mary and that's how it should remain. It is like that for thousands of years and this chain shall not break. We have to respect Holy Mary and Mount Athos traditions!!!

This documentary saved my life. I used to watch it some nights when I was especially down during the Covid lockdown. I was jobless and there were no jobs to apply for as everything was shut down, and I couldn’t volunteer for anything either, and friendless and isolated, and felt like giving up. This documentary gave me such peace. I used to have it on in the dark and it was like drinking cold water on a hot day. I am eternally grateful to the people who made this documentary and whoever put it on You Tube.

To be seen the Holy Light who comes from the sky at Jerusalem in the Easter night is the evidence of the good religion wich is orthodoxy. That fire ignite the candle of the priest and ppl there . That fire doesent burn anything for some minutes, you can put it on your face , clothes nothing happens. There are also other religions, muslims, budhism, hindu, but only at the christian orthodox priest the Light appears.

I struggle a lot with mental health and addiction, but when I listen to the hymns being song from Mount Athos it is like everything falls into order within myself again and I feel peace and at ease with the world I live in. These monks are very lucky to have such blessed lives. I have often wished there was monasteries here in Norway, all the time since I first became religious in my teenage years, studying Buddhism, and then converted to Christ after having tried all other things.

I have a question. i don't believe I could ever live with the distractions of my life like some of these monks, even though I want to. What do you see in this life that is so appealing ?
All the documentaries I see on RUclips are so irrelevant to my recent experience from Mt Athos. After having stayed there for five days, I returned to daily “normal” life, one week ago. The place was just extraordinary! To start with, nature and the ancient buildings were unbelievably beautiful and charming. However, there was no sense of relaxation or easy going; everything was on the move, and followed a strict schedule.Church started at 4, 3, or even 2 a.m. ( service times were different in the different monasteries) and went on from two to four hours, even six on Sunday. We used to walk in the night on our way to church admiring the stars. The galaxy was quite visible. There was no electricity in church, only candle light. The experience of sunlight coming in from the church windows during liturgy, along with the progress of the day was just unbelievable, one felt of being reborn. Lunch was about 9 am, dinner at 7 pm (20 min each, we hardly managed to eat the food provided!), all intermittent with worship. We slept very early (about 8 p.m.). The monks were like spirits, very thin, fast moving, very willing to help, some quite distant, dedicated to a life of praying and continuous work,. Religion was not an abstract concept but a living experience. These people live in the word of Christ, the Apostles and Saints. They were of strong convictions, serving us (the intruders?) with ample accommodation and food. Time was still, you thought you were in the days of Christ but you also felt that time was running fast and made you feel that you must make good use of your time while on earth. Having living Saints (e.g. the late Paisios and other living elders) around fortified the latter impression. Meeting people from other Christian nominations gave you a brotherly feeling. Life felt pure and genuine. I returned exhausted but with a quite different perspective on the world we live in.

Athos.But hiking from one monastry to the next also.I have this unbelievable feeling of doing something very special.But also a bit of a fear,this journey back in time is not a trip for everyone.I heard I need a permit for visiting it,what about that ?

Remember you will need a passport to get the visa. Also once you are in let God guide you. The closest distance on going to top of Athos is Agia Anna skete.

@@joelzkh Thank you. Honestly, I cannot really say I "enjoyed" something there in the way one enjoys a film, a holiday, a visit, or the company of someone. The monks do not live in this world. Things around them were not happening to please them the way we think. This is what I meant when I wrote that my experience was different from the RUclips videos. I entered a different state of mind, a kind of alertness, a different perspective. Self questioning and criticism was a great part of it. Knowing Greek will help you very much in your visit.
Stayed there for a week about 3 years ago with my father. An absolutely soul-cleansing, spiritual experience for us people "from the world". I'm an orthodox christian but I drown in this world's temptations. When we came back from Athos, I could see the FILTH that surrounds us.
There is so much filth in Athos too. The difference is that is hidden much better

I would visit Mount Athos if I was a male. My good friend lives there. He used to attend my Bible studies. He is one of the holiest young man I have ever met in my life. He always wanted to be away from the busy world. I miss our Bible discussions so much. I hear that he loves it there.

Quite possibly one of the closest places to heaven we have in this world.
Being raised in an American protestant community, I never really saw the extent to which a man can devote his entire existence to serving God. Eastern Christianity has been pulling me back after having walked off the path after childhood. The way in which the monks sing has such an emotional pain to it, A cry for help to their father. The desire to love and be embraced by God.

When my father came from Athos his eyes were shining like he had lasers , my mother says and other ppl. He also witnessed a miracle.A small cottage or whatever it was starting going on fire but in the way that it started as a small circle and soon the whole cottage was in small flaming circles. The day after my father told a monk about it and asked what it was and then monk was like... " oh its nothing...an elder fights a demon..its common .." smt like that i can't recall the exact words..Also there a beach or its the whole See (again I dont recall sry) where it is not allowed to swim etc. As they didnt know they went in but soon swarm of hornets surrendered them and they ran out...it followed them all the way to the monastery where hornets left them..the thing is that there wasn't a single sting or a bite to any of them..then a monk told them how it is forbidden to swim and they realized the message

Not religious in the slightest, but I do respect the sincere conviction of the monks of Athos. They give off a very peaceful and good vibe. The feeling of getting closer to some semblance of historic belief in god. Also, from an historical, social and anthropological point of view it's extremely educational.

As I understand it, Orthodoxy kept itself in and around the middle-east. Spreading easily to Greece, which could attributed to language, and possibly the ease of creating a society when you have a belief set ready to go.

I was born in 1979. My first visit in Mount Athos, or Holly Mountain was in 1985. It was a window, a passage to older times. As soon as we arrived they offered loukoumia (a sweet, chewy delicacy, the usual treat till now), raki (alcoholic beverage similar to grappa-vodka) and Greek coffee. Then we were escorted to the guest rooms. No central heating, old stoves burning woods, no electricity, there were petrol lamps. I can still recall the very smell of the room. It was the way people lived for centuries. The faint light, trembling, shy through the smoked glass, the shadows on to the walls, the iron beds with stiff and uncomfortable mattresses, the chestnut wood floors, almost total darkness after 20:30 was very eerie. Not frightening but I was in awe. Monasteries were build almost 1000 years ago, most of them by people who chose to be apart from the world. They resemble to castles, due to often raids of pirates and looters. I will never forget the sky there. It was totally silent, I had never experienced such a quiet environment. No cars, no traffic, no voices, nothing. So a 6 years old son of an Orthodox priest was stargazing feeling out of this world. Countless stars, a totally clear sky and an underlying sense of Divinity, calmness and awe. Time in Agion Oros (in Greek language) has a different sense. Monks wake up at 2 or 3 a.m. They go to the main church, Katholikon. Their shadows, dressed in black, while they walk in a fast pace is something to observe. Services are long, in a dark church, there are only some bee wax candles to create some light, or shadows. The greatness, the strict spirit of Byzantium lives in those ceremonies, in these places. I loved history so, I remember I imagined emperors attending a Liturgy, before a crucial battle. Or people of past centuries walking for months to do the pilgrimage to Athos. When services ended it was around 8:00 a.m. So the transition from night to day was visible only by the high placed windows in the center dome of the church, the troulos. After there was one of the two meals of the day. Monks first and then all the pilgrims entered the trapeza (the dining room). Long wooden tables, wooden benches, walls covered in Christian drawings, art treasures, were the scenery. Meat is prohibited. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays food was without even oil. But it was so tasteful. Recipes from an Era where food was simple, healthy and crucial for all the works that these men should do. Bread was homemade in wood stoves, whole wheat. It had a sour taste, no preservatives, pure bread. There was some wine on the tables, fruits and a metal dish in front of everyone. Monasteries had the obligation to give hospitality to anyone asked for it. Meals weren't lasting long. A monk, after he took the blessing of abbot, read from the Scripts, or the life of a saint. In festive days fish was served. It was so tasty. After the blessing, everyone went to his prearranged work. One had to clean the tables, other to cook, agricultural duties, etc. Ancient water sources, forests of chestnut trees, oak trees, hazelnut trees, the distant sound of sawmills, donkeys used to carry anything, were the background noises and images of the days there. I visited two monasteries then. One was next to the sea. So I could hear the waves rushing to the shore, such a mesmerizing lullaby! The other was at the heart of the peninsula, near the capital of Athos. Karyes (walnut trees) was a village taken from the past. Streets were stone made, two-stories building around a famous church the Protaton, the house of one of the most recognizable ikons of Panagia, the Axion Esti. The village was in the backbone of the peninsula, in some altitude. So the air was clean, crisp and cold. But it also brought a sense to me, it was an ongoing ritual, my whole first visit there. At a later visit I had the blessing of meeting father Paisios (father for me is a much more close word than Saint). He lived in a small stone house alone. There was a big garden and a long cable to the fence. It was attached to a bell into the house. In the backyard, where he was hosting all the people who walked to meet him, there were some chopped logs used as stools. A small table, a jar of cold water, a couple of glasses and a box of loukoumia. We sat at the logs and pappoulis (grandpa) talked to us. He wasn't judgemental or strict. He had a very sweet sense of humor. I can also recall his very deep eyes. You felt like he was seeing inside you. I have so many memories of places and people there. One specific monk, who passed away years ago was my favorite. He was silent. But smiling all the time. In the eyes of my 6 years old self he looked like Santa Klaus, agios Vasilis. He was happy, really happy and I used to sit next to him in a corner outside the church while he was peeling some potatoes or just sitting. He talked only when he had something meaningful to say and he treated me raw hazelnuts. It was the first time I realized the importance of silence in communication with people you love and respect.
All the above, after I ask your forgiveness for my poor English are recollections, memories from a time I had faith, a time when world was a better place. So after seeing this video I was overwhelmed by feelings, of warmth. Of stability, security. All the things I am deprived. First Christians were confessed in front of others. So, in the worst period of my life I can only confess to you my brothers and sisters. And share my humble thoughts . Please pray for me. Pray for a prodigal son, pray for our world. And let's have love in our hearts. Shaped in the form of a God, abstract or other. Amen.

The problem is, that if at the Athos they had been Roman Catholics, 60 years after Vatican II the Athos as well would be a resort for tourists, a museum or smth like, with no vocations... We had Traditions, and and hieratic, ascetic and mystic Church life, and Sacred Liturgy, and ... Now, you only have wordly mess, doctrinal chaos, bishops spreading heresies because of "pastoral challenges" and so on.. it's simply absurde. Thanks God, Athos were not under Rome, so they could keep living this sacred Church's life.

I have never been to famous monastic communities such as Athos, Valaam, Optima, Mar Saba, St. Catherine's on Sinai, etc., but God has blessed me to visit a few monasteries in America. The monks in this documentary remind me of the monastics I have met and now count as friends-kind, wise, meek, and often have a sense of humor. I met two monks from the Holy Mountain last summer, a Serb and a Russian. Wonderful men. I believe I would love this life, and it would be good for me, but I am nearing 40, and have major responsibilities in the world. If God wills me to be a monk, may it be so. He will find a way. Watching this video also reminded me how truly far from God I am, because my soul is swollen with pride, grudges, and other stuff. May the prayers of our monastics save us! I was not born Orthodox, but am so by choice. I love our holy Church. May God preserve it unto ages of ages! Amen. ✢

Not exactly. There are thousands of christian denominations and even within the same one, especially in the Orthodox church, you will struggle to find two people that believe EXACTLY the same thing.
So, there are some assumptions that can be made, mainly concerning basic dogma, and others that cannot be made.

@@Gr-pw2lv They are Malankara Syrian. The Malankara Orthodox are an independent group parted away from the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch from my understanding. They still recognises the Patriarch of Antioch of Syriac Orthodox Church as their head.

Thanks for this lovely video. The best part of the video was the monk who shared his new socs with his brother monk. It made me see how simple they live. Devoid of many possessions. It made me see how there is virtue in emptying oneself out. My thoughts, what my eyes see, what my ears hear, what I eat, and what I say. Then filling myself up with only Christ.
Beautiful video. As a female, I can never visit there. My sibling has been and brought me a beautiful hand painted icon from there. Your film brought me an experience of Athos that I have coveted. I feel blessed to have watched it. Thank you so very much!

Im not saying you dont, But if you aren't familiar with the Gospels since you aren't Christian, you would find that women play an important role in the life of Christ. I understand the role of women throughout a patriarchal history, but God has given them a special place in creation, they have been given the ability to to carry a miracle of life, and in return are due equal respect. Elder Paisios of Mount Athos said: When someone gives his heart to God, then the mind of this man is also seized by the love of God. He is indifferent towards worldly things and continually thinks about the Heavenly Father, and being divinely in love, he glorifies his Creator day and night like an angel.
Finally took the time to watch this documentary. The part from 43:35 to 44:30 is truly moving. I often find myself caught up in worries, anxiety, griefs, thoughts of not being good enough and not having enough, wondering what will give me peace and satisfaction and when. In reality, we can find goodness and contentment in everything, everywhere and at anytime, but at the same time we will never escape problems as long as we are alive, no matter what situation we are in.
Only in death with God we'll be truly at peace. In the meantime, we must learn to persevere and not lose faith and hope, while enjoying what we already have.
May Christ bless these monks, everyone who made this video possible and everyone who watched it and is watching it.

I have been a few times in the Holy Mountain-Athos and I would like to tell about the food there, which is offered for free by the monks in all the Monasteries and the Skities (small monasteries with a few monks). Well the food generaly is FANTASIC-VERY TASTY, especialy in the Skities. You have had an idea how is prepared in the documentary. The only problem is that you have to eat in about ten minutes! May God bless us All! Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us and the entire world!

What an amazing piece of work! I've been to the Holy Mountain and can attest to the spirituality that envelopes this sacred place. There is no other site comparable to it in the Christian world. It has been nearly 13 years since I journeyed to Mt. Athos, and the impression that my pilgrimage left upon my mind and soul is indelible.

When my father came from Athos his eyes were shining like he had lasers , my mother says and other ppl. He also witnessed a miracle.A small cottage or whatever it was starting going on fire but in the way that it started as a small circle and soon the whole cottage was in small flaming circles. The day after my father told a monk about it and asked what it was and then monk was like... " oh its nothing...an elder fights a demon..its common .." smt like that i can't recall the exact words..Also there a beach or its the whole See (again I dont recall sry) where it is not allowed to swim etc. As they didnt know they went in but soon swarm of hornets surrendered them and they ran out...it followed them all the way to the monastery where hornets left them..the thing is that there wasn't a single sting or a bite to any of them..then a monk told them how it is forbidden to swim and they realized the message

This is one of the few remaining bastions of true spirituality in this rotten, greedy, material world. If you are physically capable, try walking up Mount Athos, praying along the way. When you reach the top, the experience is beyond any words.

I'm so happy I decided to watch this after scrolling past it and then coming back to it. An amazing documentary to watch on Christmas day 2019.
I attended a catholic boarding school from the age of around 6 years old until the age of 17. I had no interest following the catholic ways but always believed in God.6 years ago( 47 then ) I found Orthodoxy ( Or Orthodoxy found me ? ).
Ever since I have had this "Calling" or urge to visit Mount Athos.
Inspirational and spiritual. I could see it a thousand times this video and it does not tire me. Too bad it is not translated into Spanish, the experience would be greater. However, the Spirit speaks for itself and fills the heart. Thanks for such a good performance. Greetings from Chile to its creators.

Tyler Kroenke an unique experience. Like going back to 1000 years ago. No electricity, no modernity, pure spirituality and nature all around. The beauty of orthodoxy.
I love the cat featured during the 41-43 minute time slot. You can hear him or her purring, and you can really tell that this good monk appreciates its contribution to the Monastery. I'll bet there's even a cat door into the monastery through or near the altar.
