ODE is dream come true, now never worry if disc drives fail
let’s be honest we’re all buying this because the original games are bollcoks expensive so it’s the only real way to play them now
Light gun Atomiswave conversions run perfectly on regular 480i CRTs. No PVM / BVM required.
All I know is that there's been misinformation about the requirement of a VGA / 31khz monitor to play Atomiswave light gun conversions since before they started getting released..and it still continues, unfortunately.
@@Fattydeposit So 480i is 15khz and 480p is 31khz?
I wonder if they would still work if you converted vga video to component.
I have Fenrir for my Saturn and I’ve been pleased with it. I like the mode, but I think offering console specific options at a lower cost would help Terraonion sell more units. I feel like a lot of people just want to zip their console back together and use it
You would likely be pleased with any of the ODE options. What the MODE has an advantage of compared to all of the others is the ability to use SSD hard drive and hold as many games as you want. SD Cards are limited by size and if you want a big one (still too small to hold every game) it costs more than a hard drive.
I had a MODE installed on my Saturn and ended up moving it to a spare Dreamcast.
The Fenrir is more than enough and you can get 512GB SD cards cheaply (around $50) if you keep an eye on Amazon sales, which is enough to hold the entire Saturn library.
@@RetrOrigin 512gb is not enough to hold the entire saturn library, unless you leave out many Japanese exclusives. There is also hacks and translations and the full USA library. What you are doing is cherry picking, not using a full library like some people prefer. You should also be using SanDisk SD Cards, just for anyone wondering.
@@StarshipGhost I only left out most of the PAL games that are for the most part identical to their US or Japanese ounterparts (sans the lower refresh rate), so it technically may not be a full library, but I don't see the point in keeping those.
I kept all the japanese adventure games for the heck of it.
The card I use is GigaStone, and it works perfectly fine not only on my Fenrir, but I also had one on my PSIO prior to getting an XStation and had tested it with no problems on my USBGDROM using and SD to USB card reader adapter. so there's absolutely no need to stick to SanDisk.
@@StarshipGhost The transfer rates of all these old consoles are pathetic. As long as the card is compatible, there's no real point in getting more expensive brands.
Buying brand names doesn't mean you have high standards, it just means you go with the flow and don't bother doing actual research on how memory chips function and how they are manufactured.
Get off your high horse.
The MLIG episode that was foretold in legend passed down from generation to generation. Super hyped to watch. I love MODE.
This was a really good episode. Thanks, guys! We're living in some magical times for retro gaming, and it just keeps getting better.
You timed this perfectly. I just took the plunge and bought a model 2 Saturn, and I was trying to figure out not only which ODE to go with, but also what else I need to do to fully bring my Saturn up to spec. Its just one piece of the puzzle, but its a huge one - MODE, capacitor replacement, Action Replay cart, and a RAD2X Saturn cable.
My Life in Gaming: Come for the theme, stay for the content.
I don't see the benefit of having an all in one solution. The connectors on the consoles (and the ribbon cables) are not robust enough to handle back and forth swapping of the device between consoles. I would prefer 3 bespoke solutions that are designed with cost effectiveness in mind.
Could not not agree more, plus, it costs a fortune.
it simplifies the stock at the sellers end. Plus before for the Saturn the same seller sold two very different ODEs (Phobe and Rhea) for different revisions of the Saturn)
The Mode don't care what the hardware version is for the Saturn, and supports 2 versions of the Dreamcast
These solutions are FPGA based and unfortunately FPGA’s are quite expensive. They probably couldn’t cut costs by much even if they only supported 1 system
Benefit to me us using a much cheaper HDD or SSD over a SD card at the 500 Gb to 1TB range
@@lukasperuzovic1429 the two main benefits to the end user are storage options and a slightly better UI than other solutions. besides that, not much gained for the extra cost involved in this being multi-system.
Love the use of Grandia music in your videos. one of the best series for OSTs
I love your guy's passion about this stuff. I like retro games, but you take it to the next level. Good video and know your work is appreciated.
Always enjoy your rom hack suggestions and the atomiswave ports are truly a gift.
Excellent video. Despite there being plenty of other videos reviewing these ODE's, this one is among the best.
Awesome episode, Coury. I’m super jealous of these setups.
I love the Grandia 1 & 2 background music. Nice choice!
I own two MODE's for DreamCast and Saturn. By far the best ODE on the market.
Avoid unless you want to pay a fortune, GDEMU costs $50 and even Chinese clones now play the vast majority of games. If you are based in Europe, prepare to pay an extra 20% + admin fees as TO is based in Andorra which is outside the EU customs union. I would only recommend this if you are a hardline Saturn fan and willing to pay a LOT of money.
No the offical gdemu is about 130euros the clones are around 50
@@GalironRunner Fair enough but you can't tell the difference between the clones and the original though, they even use the exact same chip!
@@MOLTEN0 sort of the clones 1 will be cheap anything thats $50 to 100 will be a clone more so if more then 1 is available since the guy that makes the real ones only make a few batches a year i believe plus real is at 5.20 so anything 5.5 or 5.15/5.15b are going to be clones though more so if it has a version on the board. Also there is some difference since even if its the same chips you cant update the firmware for some reason though it maybe the 5.15b that is the same chip so many makers of the clones though its hard to tell at times.
Yeah, you'll want to look for GDI rips for Dreamcast games for the most accuracy. CDIs are usually old scene releases that were hacked up to fit on CD-Rs. (Not that many DC games were actually bigger than a CD-R, but still)
TerraOnion needs to get official distributors. Since they moved to Andorra, we get heavily taxed!
I mean, I live in the same peninsula and I end up paying almost 100€ in taxes and handling fees. So no Mode for me.
That the fault of the EU not Terraonion.
@@lukasperuzovic1429 They moved from Spain to Andorra do skip taxes. How’s that, Europe’s fault?
It's your government, not mine, not theirs.
If I was them, I would move to Andorra too.
@@lukasperuzovic1429 doesn’t change the fact that they would shift more units if people could get it for less
I don't know what you talking about.
I got no issues in the US getting a Mode from Andorra to here. And it shipped faster than most companies ship here in the US.
Excellent video. As always. Thank you! Greetings from Italy!
Another fantastic video!
I need to look up this X-Station you mentioned.
How about an episode about the GCLoader and SD2SP2, now?
Just got a GCLoader, so I hope it’s good! :-D I’m just happy to see some love for the GameCube these last few years.
Haven’t even heard of SD2SP2 though.
@@nickwallette6201 It's basically a mod-free way to do what the GCLoader does. Just need a way to launch Swiss to use it.
@@smashpro1 Only works in original model Gamecubes though Dol-001 with a serial port 2. Sadly I had a later model Dol-101 that removed the serial port 2. I'm still able to load of an sd card reader in the second memory card slot using a hacked game save at least
@@Danbo22987 I had a later model DOL-001 with a door for the SP2 port, so I bought the SD2SP2. I found out that my old Cube didn't have that SP2 port! Ended up buying another DOL-001 on eBay that had it for sure.
If you guys look at GameCubes, make sure to check to see if that port is actually there. Just being DOL-001 is not a guarantee that the port is still there.
I love how much grandia music you guys use
Love my mode. I use it on all 3 systems. Ps1, saturn, dreamcast. I also have 3 hard drives. 1 for each system to keep files sorted nicely.
There's no fat on these videos. Love the no-nonsense delivery of useful info you guys are doing.
Its a good time to be a retro game find. Mode sounds amazing thanks for this detailed episode very cool and helpful stuff🙏
I have never heard of MODEs before. Fascinating!
One of the best channels on youtube :) Thanks for the video.
For anyone choosing to go with Fenrir, know that not all oval Saturns are model 1. I have one that is a model 2 in a model 1 shell. Fenrir only supports the 20 pin models currently but CED is testing the 21 pin version and it should be released shortly. It only supports SD cards so the MODE has many more options.
Tales of Phantasia is a great if grindy RPG for the SNES that looks like a PS1 game in a lot of aspects, the very late life large carts did a pretty good job and I forgot there was a PS1 port as I have a translated repro cart. I can't say I will miss the DeJap Translations though with f-bombs out of nowhere.
I have been on the fence about getting an ODE for my systems but thanks to this video I think I may finally pull that trigger so to speak, keep up the good work.
God, I'm always so surprised by the great production quality of YLIG's videos
You should honestly make a dedicated video for those Atomiswave ports. I've been playing the heck out of KenJu lately and I'm sure there's more I've missed!
There are currently 24 games you can easily get from the same forum. Just try them all.
I had my Fenrir for almost a year now, and I just LOVE it. Only thing I need to do is get my Saturn modded with new parts and the FRAM mod. Definitely gonna get a MODE soon for my Dreamcast when I get it modded, since the GDEMU won't be coming back for a while. From what I've seen on the video, the MODE has all the good features I want out of an ODE. Very impressive
Honestly, ODE is the best thing that has happened to optical disc based gaming systems preservation! Optical drives and discs will fail, so a solution with no moving mechanical parts is a dream come to true.
Can't wait to get my Xstation and install it!
Been playing Grandia with the Satiator for a few weeks now, its great fun!
Well I just discovered the XStation a few weeks ago and now this pops up! I'm liking this!
I think the xstation might be the best bet still
I still prefer my xstation
@@nunyabusiness69 why
I'd do a MODE for the Dreamcast and Saturn, and XStation for the PS1.
Gdemu for Dreamcast*
i'm barely even interested in the topic but will still watch it because mlig
Great overview. I think you've convinced me that I need a MODE for my Dreamcast in the future. Had a GDEMU (official) and it wasn't all that reliable so I went back to real discs. The MODE with its nicer menu and extra features looks quite nice and sounds pretty reliable.
It plays all Dreamcast games and it's very easy to install on that system as well.
Thanks for the breakdown, I've been looking into an ODE for my dreamcast the past week, when I get some cash I'm going to buy a mode. Sounds great.
Or get a GDemu clone for 1/4 of that.
@@Gladson That's what I got for my Dreamcast as well and it's working great!
@@mitu123Copper same here, working like a charm with every game I tested so far
I've been following your channel for a few years now and it helped me a lot to keep my consoles alive here, however,
having one of these for me who live in Brazil is just a dream, its price for my country is 5x the standard value + taxes and shipping, it is more expensive than buying the 3 consoles working in good condition, sad but true, the hope is clone him or Fenrir and get me a made in china for a lower price here and relive my saturn
I got my MODE a couple of months ago for my Saturn. I absolutely love it. There are a few weird quirks to work through, but once its up and running its amazing. The saturn library is so expensive I think its worth the price if you plan on playing a lot of saturn games. Very flexible in terms of storage media, however I will say they strongly discourage the use of certain Samsung SD cards and SSDs, they have weird compatibility issues for some reason. I have a sandisk micro SD card and it works beautifully.
I use a Sandisk SSD here, no problems.
Getting the MODE for the Saturn is a no brainer. With disc rot becoming a real thing, it is just asinine to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars for cd's. I absolutely LOVE the MODE for the Saturn, I finally can play all of the ridiculously overpriced games like most of the shmups and stuff like Elevator Action Returns.
@@shivasthong4924 And a SSD cheaper than a SD card at the same capacity
@@shivasthong4924 I meant both types of storage made by samsung. Sorry if grammar was ambiguous
@@lukasperuzovic1429 I went with the sd card because I was a little worried about heat generation because the console has no active fans, but I've not heard of anyone having issues so it seems I was overly cautious
So much great info, thanks Coury.
Dolphin Blue is such a fun game to play! Finally got Atomiswave and Naomi running like a charm on the Pi4 and my first playthrough was Dolphin Blue ^^
Best game channel. Their taste in games is impeccable.
Your love of save files has not fallen on deaf ears. Wanna try this on my system s
What I most want added to the MODE is a "boot last game" feature like the MegaSD has. Also as said in the video to be able to transfer from SD card to SSD would be great.
Love love love what you do guys!!! Amazing video as always, thanks. These units are great - I have to say that the original disc drives with original discs are part of the retro experience for me. Loading from SSD just wouldn’t feel authentic. Great they’re available for when the drives all eventually die though.
Honestly, ODEs and soft mods actually extend the life of a console when the laser on the drive has issues. I am facing it right now and one of my consoles is practically unusable due to almost never reading the discs properly and I don't want to have to get the laser replaced or buy another console. Plus original discs can have issues and instead of having to make so many backups of the games I own I would just store them on an SD Card/hard drive and call it a day. I consider these to enhance the retro experience with being able to choose any game you want without disc swapping, relying on a new/used SD card/hard drive instead of a disc drive that will have trouble reading the discs and possibly dying, and usually these ODEs would even have faster load times which comes in handy as long load times are never a good thing.
@@mitu123Copper Nice one for that -you’re absolutely right, I can see how valuable these things can be. And the original silicon is still playing the games which is the most important thing. Glad you found the right solution :)
@@andykara2003 Yeah I have a preference of original hardware and as long as you can still use them with certain things that can either fix or improve on the experience that's fine by my books. They aren't perfect and some things like the disc drive may go wrong with them, but to be able to still use them due to a simple modification that still allow use of the original hardware is what matters the most. Plus more options is a good thing.=O
@@mitu123Copper Absolutely, having thought about it, the most important thing to me is that the original silicone is driving the game. So I agree - the method of supplying the silicone with data is secondary :) As the guys say, the most important thing is to enjoy the game, no matter what route. Sometimes I lose track of that...
Very enticing feature of the mode is using a SSD harddrive. I like the idea of dumping an entire library on the SSD for a "set it and forget it" functionality. My other ODE's like the gdemu, I have to remember exactly how to add or remove games using some weird protocols or gui's. The space on sd cards is small and the bigger cards are much more expensive than a SSD. You might end up saving yourself money with the MODE in the longrun. That said, I already have PSIO, GDEMU, and the Phoebe installed so all these newer options are just more money sinks for very few advantages. I plan to hold out in the future for Analogue products which are where it's really at. The newly announced Analogue Duo is their first system with a CD and I expect this will help them go as far as the PS1 and Saturn consoles eventually.
This is true! Most people forget about the total cost of ownership when you see people crying about the initial cost of entry. At the end of the day MODE has the greatest value considering storage capacity options being equal across the board with ALL ODE's. I'm not one to enjoy curating gymnastics with multiple SD cards. Embrace the digital age :)
God I love this channel >_
The MODE has been great for me in allowing me to play many Saturn games that I may not be able to afford or indeed translations
Try out Bulk Slash.
@@shivasthong4924 will do, I need to pick up an SSD so I can have a lot more games on there
13:26 The way he said more 😂 I can only imagine.
And... uh... more
Really happy with my PSIO since I can still play original discs. I got a Fenrir for my Saturn since I don't intend to collect those games ever. Satiator is cool since it doesn't replace the OD but man talk about overpriced. I hope we see a lot more ODEs that don't actually replace the optical drive since it's so useful for collectors. Now if someone can create a Saturn HDMI solution (yes I know it's borderline impossible due to the weird of saturn GPUs) I can finally get rid of my OSSC and be full digital to digital HDMI and wireless controllers for my entire setup. It's wild how far retro gaming has changed in the past 10 years.
Just ordered mine for Saturn! looks like I should get a Dreamcast too huh
Great episode.
Really like your opening song
Nice to hear Phantasy Star Online music.
On point! Great job!
At 2-3 times the price of similar options I'm really not seeing the argument in favor of the MODE. Its cool, sure, but all ODEs are.
It's also usable on 3x as many systems as other devices. You're paying for the skill/knowledge behind it.
@@anthonya.jumelles7103 who cares on how many systems it works on once I have it installed on one. This is a dumb argument.
Okay, I have XStation, PSIO, Fenrir, and the USB-GDROM, and they are all cool, I'm still interested in the MODE, solely because of the hard drive support, which is something that all the other solutions don't offer, except for the USB-GDROM. SD cards are very expensive in bigger sizes and I don't like to fiddle with adding/removing games all the time, so there, a reason from someone who uses those things as well. But yes, it is expensive, hence why I don't have it yet.
@@anthonya.jumelles7103 you can't use it on all of them at the same time so it's pointless.
This is for people with lot of money. I think is pointless at this time, not that i wish not having one but i can equip all these console with a few bucks more
Isn't cheesy English voice acting part of the charm in Shenmue?
"Lucky hit! How about a game of lucky hit?" (Insert Dave's voice)

It’s cool for 1 and 2 and completely unnecessary for shenmue 3
I only played it in Japanese so it never felt cheesy to me
"Years ago I was Chinese" - An actual Shenmue quote
i think i learned a few things. rhea/phoebe were 1st odes. psio had draconian restrictions to their device but after the release of x-station and mode, loosened some of their restrictions. fenrir ode was released and got lost in the shuffle and the saturn satiator released too. mode saturn/dreamcast exist and gdemu was 1st ode for dreamcast. now that i got all of that 411, its time to make decisions, decisions decisions.
I stay up late watching your vids

I never had a sage satin but I had a saga dreamcast I love my mom and I love u dude
There is this theoretical endpoint I see approaching that offers me extreme piece of mind.
With the MiSter potentially covering everything in the CD era, it leaves Dreamcast, PS2 and N64 as the final non-HDMI consoles requiring the most TLC. If MODE ends up supporting PS2 in the future... and paired with a Retrotink 5x, it feels like the odd man out is goimg to be N64 for probably another decade until an FPGA can handle something so complex at the consumer market level.
The future looks bright.
still have to solder to play anything on ps1 and the mode is still really expensive. epic!

Hi, MLiG. I hope you'll make a Mister epsiode for consoles and arcades. Thanks. Great video as always.
Great stuff as always guys! Really enjoyed it. I understand, "THIS IS NOT A GUIDE", lol, but I've not been able to find good info on mode overclocking - like what you did for Dolphin Blue. Any recommended resources? Thanks.

Amazing games.
I love the PSO soundtrack so much.
I have the MODE for my Saturn and I love it. But the idea of swapping it in and out between my Saturn and Dreamcast is just not going to happen. It’s still a great feature and if desperate, I like having this option. However, I will be ponying up the dollars and getting another separate one for my Dreamcast! Oh, and another one for my PS1..... but being expensive as they are, I’ll be buying them incrementally 😕 But this has transformed my Saturn and is just brilliant.
Yea a good majority of people are purchasing MODE's for each console. I have no regrets. Best retro gaming investment right now.
@@hyp36rmax Yeah I would say getting Everdrives and ODEs are the best things to get for retro gaming these days. I have them for some of my consoles as well.

I have one, it's amazing
They're quite proud of these flash carts and ODEs.
I agree, I like using them for my old consoles as well.
Got my GC loader for gamecube and I'm happy, but Saturn ODE sounds sexy.
Would be cool if a cradle was printed to slide onto the bottom of each console and have a small "cartridge case" akin to a floppy drive that allows you to remove the hard drive and swap out to the next console and the ode had an additional extension cable to plug into the "cartridge case" so you don't have to keep opening your console.
Besides the Satiator, I wish there were more alternatives for people who still have working disc drives and collect physical copies, but want to also use a flash cart.
The Dreamcast has the Dreamshell software coupled with an SD card reader that plugs into the rarely-used serial port, but the read rates are nowhere near as good as either an original drive or an ODE. PS1 has the PSIO, but it's limited to earlier console revisions that have an IO port and still requires soldering to install, and on top of that it hasn't seen a firmware update in years.
U rock guy
Part of me still feels really weird removing the original drives. I recently upgraded an Amiga 500 with a floppy emulator. Given the impossible challenge of preserving magnetic storage, it was a necessary modernization. But it also feels wrong taking out a piece of its history.
Disc will rot eventually and Drives will wear out.
It's just the way it is unfortunately. If it so concerns you, I recommend buying 4-5 working consoles for every system you want, and hoarding them over decades for when all other disc drives/boards fail over time. Enjoy them with all original parts and discs while you still can.
Oh I know it's an unfortunate necessity as time goes on. The fact that most of the 30 year old floppies I have on the thing still boot is frankly a miracle, and it was important to preserve their data during the short time they have left. Zero regrets (except maybe a superficial bit of brittle-with-age plastic that cracked during the operation). There's just something surreal about holding a working piece of a several-decades-old hardware in your hands that you're replacing with something entirely different.
@@ClockworkBard it's the age old question, when you replace pieces of a boat or a car, is it still the same vehicle? I felt a sense of sadness taking out the disc drives for the Saturn and Dreamcast, but at the same time feeling like I am doing what I can to preserve actually playing the games in the long run. SD cards memory do run out in 10 years I believe, but at least we can keep writing them over and over as a long term solution.
@@quibquatch3975 I feel that. I am both a fan of cars/driving, and videogame collecting, and my view is this: I can either let my console / car wear itself down on its original parts, and have it become unusable at some point... Or I can keep servicing it and choose between replacing any broken parts with OEM equivalents, or, even better, replace old parts with new ones, so that I don't have to worry about parts breaking down again for a very, very long time... I suppose the dilemma is between whether you want a 100% original console that may become unusable, or if you'd rather have something that's 70-80% OEM, but that works almost as if it just came out of the factory... It's a personal choice, but I'd choose the second option, to be honest.
Why would you want to constantly swap this around? Totally defeats the purpose of an ODE.
I agree be costly but most would buy one for each system not continually swap it
@@coreymarch9428 you can buy 3 single system ode's for the price of the mode.
You are suppose to buy one for each system, not swap it.
@@RetroDoneRight No you can't buy 3 for the price of one. You can buy 2, though.... which only support SD Card and is limited by space. Also a large SD Card costs more than a hard drive, which only MODE supports. Are you understanding now? MODE is for people who want more space to hold more games. Also it does have some more features compared to the old ODE options.
I have one in my Saturn, and it's such a pain to get it out that it'll always remain in there. The idea of swapping it into my DC was why I initially bought it, but it's way too cumbersome to do this on a regular basis.
Don't forget to mention the Brigandine: Grand Edition fan translation with optional English fandub!
this stuff is all cool, but it does make me wanna wait for analogue’s eventual take on these systems.
You're actually the second channel to have issues with Ultraman's 4meg cart hack on the Saturn. I'm sensing a bit of a pattern.
The Satiator is fantastic.
Kinda wish I got that one, but I'm very happy with my MODE :D
