My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more.
Namco actually had a patent on loading screen games that only recently expired. It held back the industry.
? I think it was Ubisoft.
@@ngqp really? don't think I've ever seen a ubisoft game with loading screen minigames.
@@NonsensicalSpudz It's Namco. It's a 2 second google search.
Software patents period hold back the industry. We could be so much farther ahead technologically if companies were free to build on each other instead of constantly reinventing the wheel
darn
I bought the first Animal Crossing almost entirely because of the NES games that were obtainable within it. Back in the days before virtual consoles, games within games were a very special treat.
That's the only Animal Crossing I play. I love the games as a diversion from the regular game.
@@Captain_Neckbeard I imported it for that reason too. It wasnt available in UK for several years after.
Emulation on PC seems to have escaped a lot of people. Still, I agree that hidden games within games are a really fun feature!
HELL YA I hit that action replay hard with aniaml crossing. Played through zelda and punch out many times.
I really appreciate leaving the sponsor for after the video.
Wait that was an ad? I thought he was given me tips on how to pass the grinding time away lol
You cheap unded
This is what I wanted
Same as techquickie
Most sponsors don't allow for this, they want a mention within the first thirty seconds and other crap.
"I don't have a save with that game unlocked."
Don't worry, buddy. Ninja Gaiden Black was hard for me too 😭😭
Finished the game on hard difficulty once. Felt like I had arthritis when I finally finished it. Those female cat monsters are pain in the butt.
Git gud?
@@priscillaemerald987 No normal gamer is ever going to finish Ninja Gaiden on hard. It's a real test of endurance and patience. The whole git gud thing is just stupid. No one should have to get that good to have fun. The way Jim Sterling rips people with that mentality apart is hilarious.
@@kellinwinslow1988 Yes, because everything in a game should just be handed to you outright without having to actively earn them through learning the game or rewarding people who choose to put in the time. Just put it on the easiest difficulty and get all the rewards because that feels just as good as actually accomplishing something you thought you couldn't.
@@kellinwinslow1988 The game kicked my ass big time in the beginning but I kept trying and eventually beat the game on hard nearly on very hard. Yes the game is very hard and has no empathy for beginners or first time players but it does teach the player what to do and the difficulty is fair except in like 2 bosses. Ninja Gaiden was one of the first action games I properly played and it really grew on me, the game is extremely rewarding.
Funnly enough, Medievil PS4 Remake includes the PS1 classic when you complete the game, such a shame it didn't make out to appear on this video.
One omission I think should have been included was how you can play the full version of the original Maniac Mansion inside Day of the Tentacle
That's the first one I thought of.
[Try4ce] I know that's a huge one, but neither of us have the game, or any experience with it, so we just didn't have time to make it happen.
Is it in the remaster too? I got it from ps plus awhile back and this would give me extra incentive to finally play it.
@@chadmasta5 No idea, but you access it by using Weird Ed's computer. Doesn't take a lot of playing to get to that, I don't think.
chadmasta5 Yes, you can. Double Fine VP confirmed it before the remaster’s release. There’s even a trophy associated with playing Maniac Mansion, too.
Donkey Kong 64 was perhaps the best bonus for both Nintendo and RARE history.
Nintendo with Donkey Kong arcade from 1981 and RARE with Jetpack from 1983 the Spectrum ZX version.
Both give the player an idea of how both Nintendo and RARE started.
They did forget to mention that Rare snuck it in as Nintendo didn't legally own the code to original. Back then, Nintendo outsourced their arcade code but after legal disputes after the porting of Donkey Kong to Atari, they made sure own the code too. Nintendo did eventually hash it out for the Arcade Archives release last year
But also the worst because they were mandatory. Now, not yo say the original donkey kong games are bad. But these type of games should always be an option
Leonardo’s warning to Krang on that Turtles in Time port is the funniest thing I have seen in quite some time!
its exceptionally bad. its like they wanted you to know they hated doing it.
sounds like something out of a Marc M. cartoon
Pick of the bunch imo...Tekken 5. Such a generous package.
Just a small correction: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle's 2 player VS mode wasn't new for the Battle port but it did add a hefty amount of more 2 player VS mode content.
Likewise, Skies of Arcadia: Legend's content isn't new - it's just the Dreamcast version's DLCs.
The intro song makes me feel like I'm floating freely in gamer space
One of the best purchases I made during the Gamecube gen was the 'Wind Waker' LE release (in UK) that came with 'Ocarina of Time' and it's 'Master Quest'. Getting my two favourite Zelda games in one set, a bargain.
And you'll find Majora's Mask bundle with Mario Kart Double Dash ;-)
Having all the old Splatterhouse games with 2010 makes it one of the best bargains out there, especially since the game is still cheap today. I also remember being so psyched to get the Star Wars arcade games with Rogue Squadron 3
Also Rebel Strike has the entire campaign of Rouge Squadron playable via co-op in Rebel Strike.
g1nobleteam Yup, has so much fun with that
So nice to hear the Tallon Overworld music from Metroid Prime in a MLiG episode! I'm actually currently working on recreating some of the Metroid Prime OST as well as writing my own music using the same synths and sample libraries that Kenji Yamamoto used for the soundtrack.
Great video guys and I'm glad to see you put the MLIG jewel I made on your Gamecube 😁 🙌
The first example of this that always comes to mind is Maniac Mansion being hidden in Day of the Tentacle
Judgement has the coolest of the arcade games of the Yakuza series like Virtua Fighter 5 FS, Fighting Vipers, and the previously arcade exclusive Motor Raid. Doom 3: Resurection of Evil also has the first two games and the Master Levels included as well
One such recent example I can definitely recall would be Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus following up on Wolfenstein: The New Order's Nightmare Level Easter Egg (Sleep in a bed, then play in a classic Wolfenstein 3D level with the new character models & physics)and the subsequent Wolfenstein: The Old Blood's multiple Nightmare Level secrets by including the entirety of Wolfenstein 3D in an arcade cabinet within the Evas Hammer bar/lounge. I didn't really give the game that much of a try, but it looked like every episode was within it and seemed to work well enough, but I can't remember if there was a full-screen mode available instead of only a point-of-view on the arcade screen. No clue if Wolfenstein: Youngblood did anything similar though.
Youngblood has the entire Wolf 3D original game through the Cabinet inside your Homebase (though its named "Dramatic Hans" or something).
I was today years old when I learned of the Quake II port in 4. Also, I would love a part 2 of this, there's just so much treasure to be discovered!
love this type of vid.. always awesome finding new secret extras in certain editions
Ghostbusters on the C64 had a Space Invaders clone on the load up screen.
I had games on tape, so load up times were a proper wait, and this was a revelation to me...
Great video as ever, thanks guys.
I'm pretty sure the OG Pitfall was in The Lost Expedition, it's a pretty underrated game.
You can play levels from TimeSplitters 2 in Homefront The Revolution.
I just want them to remake the trilogy. THQ Nordic owns the rights and they seem to be remaking all the ip's they bought recently like destroy all humans. I really hope they do...
That means playing Homefront 2 though.
It's easy enough to get the gamecube version of Timesplitters 2 running on Dolphin emulator with a not even that great PC. I've heard they're making a new timesplitters, but it needs to be made by the original team to be any good, the same team who made Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, but they're busy making Yooka Laylee games (though the new one that just came out is great)
@@Clos93 Timesplitters series was my favorite FPS of the 128bit generation. the ability to make your own multiplayer maps, kept me playing for hours upon hours.
@@Clos93 pretty sure they already announced a new time splitters is coming
I remember getting a used copy of Strider 2; and getting shafted by getting the original game on the disc instead of the sequel...
I was sooo pissed.
My first thought was Maniac Mansion in Day of the Tentacle, it was so insane for me, that there was a hole game within the game^^
*whole
Love the video, but you totally forgot about Pacman World 2. They had a whole room with unlock-able arcade cabinets with faithful recreations of almost all of the classic Pacman games. That being said I'm a big fan and you guys always deliver great videos. Keep up the good work!! =)
I loved when they did this with Splatterhouse. 4 games in one was an awesome discovery.
This was a fun video, and clearly a lot of research went into it. Great job!
Crash Bandicoot running on Uncharted 4 should get a mention in the future. The way it was setup with real time commentary from Nathan and Elena on the game itself made it so hilarious.
It should not. Rewatch the beginning of the video. It's not the full game, just one stripped down level, so it's not within the scope of what the video is about.
It's not the full game though. Just a level that was remade.
It's not emulation.
I commented pretty much the same thing lol it really should be in there, naughty dog are brilliant.
@@Alexander_l322 Like all the other people have said it's not the full game so it doesn't count and also, "naughty dog are brilliant"
My Life in Gaming has the best intro on RUclips
This is a video I didn't know I wanted. I'm saving this to watch with my dinner tonight.😝
Thank you so much for this episode. Games with games in them are exactly the type of retro I try to collect, so this is awesome!
I want to see more videos on topics like this. It's such a relatively niche topic that it allows for discussions of interesting things many may not have heard of.
I love these kinds of episodes that just bask in niche topics. The RGB series is also fantastic but I can never get enough of this type, especially since it never feels like there's any fluff.
Nothing better than 45 mins of My Life in Gaming.
The Game Gear games in Sonic Adventure: DX was one of the selling points for me back in the day! I loved the Game Gear, but I didn't want to play on the small screen or spend all that money on batteries. So I got to play through Sonic Adventure again, AND have access to those GG games!
Awesome! Games within games have always fascinated me and I'm glad I could find a retrospective on the subject
Another gaming RUclipsr who spoke about Yakuza in a video, another win for us BAD BOYZ
“Oh wow, new MLiG! I should have enough time to watch this before I have to run and grab some groceries.”
*Looks at runtime* “Oh.”
lol, MLiG vids are most of the time fairly lengthy
Geometry Wars started out as a gamepad input programming exercise developed by Stephen Cakebread at Bizarre Studios. It was popular enough among the other developers there that it was included as a hidden minigame in Bizarre Studio's Project Gotham Racing 2. It would be found as an arcade cabinet in a corner of the player's explorable virtual garages.
In Excitebike 64, the original Excitebike game is unlocked by playing the tutorial. I'd love to see it covered in a sequel for this episode.
Fantastic episode! I have no problem with the occasional mini-sode, but I love watching the long form episodes over dinner.
First video I’ve seen on this channel, it’s great! Almost 45 minutes flew right by
I wasn't a big fan of Animal Crossing on the GC, but after finding a out about the 20+ playable NES games within I appreciated it much more. Instead of playing through it I used the Phantasy Star Online save hack + Broadband Adapter and connected my laptop to my GameCube. That, along with an application which allowed you to copy saves to your GC memory card and I instantly had everything unlocked. Good times! :)
This might be the best gaming channel on RUclips. I love your attention to detail.
Good to see Coury showing my favorite game of all time in the background, Quake 2 (rocket arena 2).
Surprised you didn't mention the splatterhouse original games as unlockables for the 2010 game
What an amazing idea for a video guys! Such high quality! Love it
Bob de-interlacing and RUclips wasn't the best idea, I'm afraid
Should have used Bill de-interlacing.
They should've used EEDI2 Bob or YADIF's bob mode.
That intro music is the best. Love the channel
I just found my new favorite channel!!! Amazing quality
This is such a fun subject! I've always loved getting little bonus retro games in modern games. You guys should definitely do another episode on this as Star Fox Assault had 3 NES games in the Japanese version, but sadly just one in the NTSC (and maybe PAL) version. That's Namco for ya.
I know it's more of a teaser than a game, but I loved Gradius during the 2nd Intermission of Blades of Steel on NES. In fact, friends and I would play through two periods of hockey just to get to that stage - and it wouldn't even appear each time!
When are you guys gonna get around to uploading a video on how to get the best picture out of the Wii?
Oblivionyx Don’t be silly. That may be the easiest method, but it’s by far not the best. The Wii U’s 480p to 1080p scaling is alright at best. The best method is 480p video to a PVM using Wii Component Cables, but that’s expensive and space consuming. Just plugging those same component cables into a modern flatscreen is a good option, but not perfect. Using an OSSC to get 960p video is also a good option, since it would be sharper than 480p on a modern flatscreen, however that may not always be a good thing.
I’m using 576i video over RGB SCART to my Trinitron CRT, which works great, but has interlaced flicker since it is not progressive, as my CRT cannot handle that.
The Wii U is far better than Wii composite, and is as good as 576i/480i RGB output, when used on a modern flatscreen. Using 480p from component cables will sometimes appear better on a flatscreen than Wii U upscaling.
Yeah the Wii U also can't output 240p through HDMI if you're interested in any Virtual Console games.
The _best_ output would be a WiiDual, which is a digital-to-digital HDMI mod. The caveat to that though is that it can only be installed into a "Family Edition" Wii, and nearly all of those removed the Gamecube support. The Family Edition also has a slightly crisper component output out of the box too, anyway.
They kinda already do in the Gamecube episode
The next one is probably is't going to be for a while, not until someone makes a good OG Xbox solution and maybe they'll do that next.
Though my bet is that they're already working on a massive Dreamcast episode
Just Another RUclips Channel what if you set your wii u to output 480p to a better scaler?
really loved the video and i hope you guys do a part 2.
Thank you for mentioning Pitfall the Mayan Adventure. That's what I immediately thought of when I saw this video's title. I do remember in the Genesis/MegaDrive version at least, that the original Pitfall was also an Easter egg later in the game when you happen upon a scorpion from the original game.
For the first segment with Pitfall, I greatly appreciate you having Tekken 2 playing on your Prosumer CRT in the background.
Panzer Dragoon Orta deserves so much more love then it gets. It truly is the best game the Xbox ever had.
gammaphonic Best Panzer too!
This episode was a total treat. Thanks for your amazing work
Animal Crossing was the first one that came to mind.
I actually remember at one point mostly playing Animal Crossing just to play Wario's Woods and Punch-Out!.
At both the beginning and end of the video, you teased Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, but didn't talk about it. As a huge fan of the Prince of Persia series, I need to fill in the gap. While the original console versions including the original Prince of Persia is nothing to write home about (that game is available on everything), the Xbox version specifically included Prince of Persia 2. This is notable because Prince of Persia 2 has been ported far less, the Xbox version is only the second time it's ever hit consoles, and the first (and only) time a good version of the game was available on consoles.
And if that sounds good, Sands of Time is backwards compatible on both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. I hear the 360 version doesn't work with the older games, but I can't find any evidence on its functionality on the Xbox One.
[Try4ce] Yeah, sorry, that was one we were sad to cut out, but we just didn't have time to make it happen. I have two beat files on my GameCube memory card, and am not sure why PoP original is grayed out in my menu. I've definitely played it there before. But like you say, the Xbox version is the one to show really, which I own, but don't have any files in. I just didn't have time to make it happen.
Similarly to missing Maniac Mansion in DOTT, another BIG omission from this video is the the inclusion of the complete "Indian Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" point and click game in the Wii version of "Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings".
Just subbed on Patreon today. What a nice reward!
Great ep. I was on a kick for a while before this whole rush of releases of collections. I was astonished by a couple: animal crossing, splatterhouse (containing 1-3), the psp castlevania (w/ both SOTN & RoB). But I gotta say the one that blew my mind was a collection with unlockable games, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Yes, it's a collection. Tho, it req you to play and unlock, and the games included are some real gems, which my qualify itself to the criteria of this ep. Regardless, to this day it has to be the best retro collection imo.
I love the Panzer Dragoon series!
One of my favorites is the Doom 3 Limited Edition for Xbox. They included Doom 1&2 with local and online co-op & deathmatch.
U made me feel as a big kid again video games as a 1980s kid i miss the old arcades keep up the good work
Subsistence version of Metal Gear Solid 3 on the PS2 has a bonus disc with Metal Gear 1 & 2, although they have quite a few changes since they're based on the mobile phone versions rather than the actual MSX2 originals. Most notable, the character portraits in MG2 are different.
Thank you so much for reminding me of that Triple Trouble track. Hit my brain like a jolt haha
The TRON arcade games were included on the Tron 2.0 Killer App Game Boy Advance cart.
It’s amezing how they were able to port or emulate those classic games as bonus games in their main games.
EDIT i wish you mentioned superwrecking crew on the snes wich also contained a ported nes version of wrecking crew.
Thanks guys I've been trying to look for video's on this topic and you dudes just blew it out of the park... Great video and good work I just love it 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✊✌️🤘🤟
Don't forget there's a port of Excite Bike on the N64 version. Plus a version of Snake in the home village of Fur Fighters. Hhhmmm….. possibly a couple of cabinet arcade games somewhere in Grand Theft Auto: Vice city (could have been San Andreas...… or maybe i'm just wrong).
There's also an arcade cabinet title within Catherine though I can't remember if it's an original arcade title or a game they made up just for fun. It's a nice slice of retro regardless, and integrates into Catherine tremendously.
Nice vid lads, looking forward to part 2.
I live for this kind of thing!
Best gaming channel on RUclips by a metric mile!
That would be kilometer chief
@@racisttrollex7596 I think the joke went right over your head.
@@tommyzorera I think "Trollex" went over yours.
If you pause at the right moment at 37:15, the turtle's armbands, and bandanna disappear... that's because the background is tilebased, while the sprite layer is more quick-changing on the fly-contextually for which turtle is being played.
Holy crap, 45 minutes!? Wow! I somehow misread the length as 9-minutes when I first saw this in my subbox, so this is great!
What the hell? Same thing here :')
I remember Jetpack!!! Also I can remember a 1993 game called "Day of the tentacle" which in one room in the game, you could access a computer that you could play the whole prequel called "Maniac Mansion" and that was epic back then! You could run the game outside of the game you are meant to play it from by renaming one file to .exe and it worked! lol
Pong with Mortal Kombat sound effects in the arcade version of Mortal Kombat II. I know it doesn't count, as it's modified, but it's worth noting, especially as you have to play 250 multiplayer games. They refer to it as "A battle from your past", and one you win, you are thrown straight back to Mortal Kombat II.
Ironically, Mortal Kombat II is unlockable in Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks.
Fun Fact: in Pac Man 2: The New Adventure. You can unlock a remake of both arcade versions of Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man by putting PCMNDPW for the original pacman and MSPCMND for ms. Pacman. And it works on both versions of the game (Genesis and Super Nintendo)
I love the Quake 2 running in the background of Coury’s footage
You guys make 40 minutes fly by in no time, it's amazing.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night hidden as an easteregg/unlockable in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood PSP was seriously the best value for money game in a game I ever experienced.
MGS Integral contains the entirety of MGS VR Missions and MGS2 contains even more missions
Great work! Also, I appreciated the tip about getting through grindy games!
In Lego dimensions you can gain access to a bunch of midway arcade games with the gamer kid minifigure.
Very cool and unique video!
Thanks guy’s I really enjoyed this.
An incredible GWAG that goes totally under the radar is in the N64 & PS1 versions of Madden 2002- Madden Football Classic, a port of Madden 93 except with the rosters of Madden 01 including the then-new Jaguars.
I know, sports. I know, Madden. I know, no one in your audience likely cares. But it's a truly incredible bonus, especially for people like me who never really got on with 3D football games as much as earlier 2D ones.
Great work, guys! Can't wait to see Part 2! :D
(Will be a part 2, right? ^_^' )
I been a backloggery member for years my first seeing your RUclips channel loved this video !
Excellent Episode A+++++ Incredible research and production quality! I think that Coury needs to be mic'ed a little bit louder.
I enjoy this video haven't watched you guys in a while this popped up on a playlist and I loved it
I did learn A LOT of things I did not know about. Again.
Thanks!!
25:25 That scene of Kenshiro picking up the Mark III controller daintily in his giant meatslab hands made me snort tea from my nose.
I'm so happy that you guys covered FOTNS Lost Paradise
There was a Contra and Castlevania collection on PC which used the NES versions. I got it for $10 at Toys R Us nearly 10 years ago.
Yup, I own that too!
Woe what a great video. I'll have to pick some up of these games up.
Really interesting stuff guys, I do love games that have games to play whilst loading....really passes the time, doesn’t really count for your show but always remember invade-a-load on the C64 - a space invaders clone which is probably my favourite space invaders game of all time! Fast and great music preferred that to any of the games I was actually loading😂
I remember being so blown away by playing NES games in Animal Crossing. Little me could play NES games in another game! I didn't know what "inception" meant then, but that's what it felt like. And then to be able to download certain ones to my Game Boy without a Link Cable was mind-blowing. I could play these games without the cart! It was like witchcraft, and I dabbled in that a lot. Now I can have an all-in-one system on anything that runs on a few lemons and half a potato.
Edit- Most of the NES library (including Punch-Out) could be obtained using secret codes in Tom Nook's shop. The only games that had to be hacked in are Ice Climbers, Super Mario Bros, Mario Bros, and Legend of Zelda, otherwise known as "The Forbidden Four". At least two of those four could be unlocked with e-Reader cards.
Surprised you didn’t include the special edition of DOOM 3 on Xbox that includes Ultimate Doom and Doom 2.
Also, a recent example of this that I can think of is the first level of Crash Bandicoot in Uncharted 4
A cool thing about that version of doom is that there are new secret levels
