Sunday mornings in the UK, just suck without a little sack to watch! YAY!
Same here in Latvia, I wake up knowing I'll get some a leve entertainment
The one interesting thing about the OutRun 60fps mode on Saturn compared to the 3DS or Switch is that it give you points in the extra frames, making it likely you will in a score ending with 5 instead of 0. Would love to see a side by side comparison of each port's 60fps mode because they do feel different.
@Jay Dee what can I say, I've been playing the game since I was 5.
Good to see Joe can finally convert the channel to SEGA only now that that Nintendo guy is gone. (Just kidding, miss ya Dave)💘
Nintendo gets tons of coverage as is, my personal taste are more in line with Joe
Joe rocks. Still miss dave, though.
Hahhaha I miss Dave too!
What happened to dave?
I know Dave left but I forget why. Please tell me it was amicable
Good old Game Sack. Videos you know you can "like" before actually watching them.
The skits at the end are better than modern AVGN.
Yep..
Embrik, No! AVGN is retro.. But I do like Game Sack..
@@embrikchloraker8186 I would use the term modern loosely. I have all but unsubscribed from that channel for the last.... 3 years or more.
0:50 - piracy may be wrong but not everyone has money stacked to the sky to buy an actual physical copy of a certain game.
Honestly if the game is simply out of print it's not even going to affect the publisher.
Piracy is the most effective way of preserving old games. Even if you went to a museum that has every game, unless you play the game you aren't experiencing as it was intended. The cover art is just the tip of the iceberg.
I am all for supporting developers. Which is why I will only mod or emulate when the shelf life has long since expired.
I am not paying some made up inflated price to collectors for games. There are some that say "it supports the devs" how much of that $400 goes towards the devs? $0. They got their cut when the game was bought originally.
That being said if there is a way for me to buy the games I like on other platforms I am all for it.
I enjoy the games, but I am not a collector.
Once a game is about 20 years old I believe it's okay. Once it stops being published and is out of the public domain except through eBay, thrift shops and auction sites; it's okay to emulate cause the price is generally so inflated and the developers don't get anything from it. I support emulation and translation groups not just for preserving legacy and letting older games reach new audiences but also cause a lot of game companies from back in the day are tanked now, or bought out or have merged with other ones with barely any of the original employees.
@@DukeDudeston They didn't even get a cut when the game was in it's prime. They got paid an hourly wage or salary with MAYBE some minor one-time benefits for good sales. All sales profits for nearly all games (especially of retro-era) went straight to the publisher, not to any of the creative team.
Pretty great lineup of games. Shame they never ported Outrunners to the Saturn though. I would have much preferred that over Power Drift. But I guess at least we did get Power Drift.
I hear that Joe carries a picture of Yuzo Koshiro in his wallet.
He does. Right next to a photo of Dave and the Gaiares guy.
You don't? :o
Yuzo Koshiro probably carries a photo of Yuzo Koshiro in his wallet.
why does joe keep on calling him "hiro" thats not his name its yzuo koshiro, I dont get it
@@edgarmonrgiz7952 Joe doesn't call Hero Yuzo koshiro but calls Hero (actually is Hiro) the Sega composer Hironobu Sakaguchi because Hiro was his nickname
(Excuse me for the bad english)
Fun Fact! Do you know that Sega Ages spelled backwards, means Sega Ages? Yes! Thank you, thank you.
Whoa mind blown
Coincidental? Or intended?
@@ribletbasket286 Coincidended.
Sega Ages? Ages Sega? wow coooooooooooooooool
Oh shit
I wish Sega had ported Outrunners to Saturn on a Sega Ages or even a regular release and removed the stupid split screen from the Genesis version.
I had no idea there were so many SEGA AGES-releases on the Saturn. This was an awesome video, and I'll be looking forward to your PS2- and Switch-videos!
It's always a good day when there's a new GameSack.
I live in the UK. The only version we got was Sega Ages Volume 1. It has After Burner 2, Space Harrier and Outrun. It's pretty much the only collection we needed outside of Japan. Always popping it into my Saturn, amazing collection of the best home ports of these games. Everyone Saturn owner should own a copy of this collection.
such a good compilation! All killer no filler
The 3DS versions of these games are pretty sweet & they are some of the few games where the 3D effect makes them better.
I never really cared for the 3D effect. Playing handhelds is strenuous enough on my neck, but having to keep the thing centered enough didn't help. I think most people played 3DS games in 2D.
@@GameSack I never had an issue with the 3D, but that might be cause I used a NEW 3DS which has face tracking so you don't have to hold it steady as much.
EDIT: Actually, I take that back. I did have an issue until I sent my system into Nintendo to fix. Maybe that was the reason I don't have issues with it anymore. They replaced the top screen entirely. Old screen was TN, new one was IPS.
@@GameSack The 3D is unusable on the old 3DS and 3DS XL, however the New 3DS and New 3DS XL have the "super stable 3D" as Nintendo calls it, and it is just that - perfectly working 3D which doesn't require you to look at the screen at a certain angle and don't move around. Not to mention, the "new" 3D looks crisper and takes no conscious effort to focus on. I wasn't a believer until I got the New system, playing everything in 3D all the time ever since.
@@swosho
Sega games in particular look great in 3D, like Gun Star Heroes. Wow.
@@GameSack have to disagree with you there Joe. I love playing classic games in 3D on the 3DS, my favorite handheld of all time
"I mean they're probably camping there illegally" hahahaha I lost it
I see you mentioned Phantasy Star’s Dark Phallus. I’ve been scared of Dark Phallus my entire life. In my dreams he’s so huge and can penetrate my very being. Everyone is scared of something. I guess you could say everyone has their own personal Dark Phallus, I’m just used to mine
I wish my wife were as scared of Dark Phallus as I am. She seems to really really love it though, according to her browser history.
Jon G some people are very brave and ready to face Dark Phallus. I’ve heard if you are brave enough to take him on and face him it can bring immense joy and pleasure
I'm looking forward to you covering the PS2 line. I have a bunch of them and they're pretty good.
Some of them are extremely good. Some of them are... OK. A couple are BAD!
@@GameSack I actually like to pop the Golden Axe Sega Ages game on PS2 for that mind-blowing orchestra soundtrack.
@@danielricardo5029 omg it looks so cheap though!
The word "really" was used 8 times in the narration.
The word "honestly" was used four times.
I've had tons of fun playing Outrun on my 3DS.
@matt I've a steering wheel and pedal set up with force feedback for my PC. Is there a proper PC port of it that supports wheel and pedals? I'd really love to play it that way.
BUT IS IT IN 3D! ?!?!???!
Seeing outrun without Dave pains me so much, we miss you sweet prince!
Love the topic, thanks for yet another greatly edited episode Joe! :D
The Afterburner segment was hilarious :-D
When I watched Sega Saturn's Sega Aguez series, it was interesting because it overlapped with the games that came out in the Astro City Mini, and I didn't have "Star Jacker", "Outrun", "Afterburner" or "Fantasister".
Think it's about time to have a special episode with Dave again. Be great to see more content in the future with you both working together again. The show is great but you guys together are always very entertaining to watch. 👍👍
4 player Gauntlet (along with the automatic soda dispenser with the crushed ice mmm) at the bowling alley was what I lived for back in the mid-80s.
Thank you so much for putting the ad at the end, I wish all RUclipsrs would do this.
the reason they dont is because no ad = no revenue, but Joe knows he can trust us to stay til the end of the video.
The advertisers may change payment based on where the ad is in the video.
@@musickid43 They do a little but it's worth it.
The PS2 episode is gonna be 6 hours long.
Gonna need a 6 pak to get through an episode that long 😂
@@FloridaEbikes + 10 minutes of the really cool Virtua Racing port.
My favourites volumes on the PS2: Vol. 21 - SDI & Quartet Sega System 16 Collection 'and' Vol. 30 - Galaxy Force II Special Extended Edition.
@@KillThad that's arguably one of the best parts of that collection of games.
What were there like 33 releases?
I imported almost all of these back in the day (I have like 3/4 of them, all still on my shelf). My Saturn still has the MPEG card too. Unfortunately I have no way to actually use the Saturn right now, because my setup does not support analog audio or video of any kind. If I can ever HDMI mod my Saturn I definitely will.
There are lots of cheap and also high quality options to convert the video to HDMI.
OSSCs work very very well with the Saturn. There's other options, too.
Or you could get a crtv that's pretty simple
I use an OSSC hooked up to my second monitor so I can binge Powerslave any time.
@@GameSack Oh yeah I know...but I don't like dealing with analog video at all. I would rather have a solution to mod HDMI output directly onto the Saturn itself. Even if it's converted to HDMI, the quality will only be as good as the source, and I can't stand the way analog video looks these days.
Discovered Game Sack ever since Classic Game Room fell apart and got shitty!
They fell apart?? Their videos were extremely cool :c
@@JairJoe27 they stopped uploading on RUclips and just uploads on amazon prime (if they still do that)
It fell apart when he stopped doing reviews of Truxton!
@@Turai12 thank you
@@Turai12 Not anymore. He eventually called it quits for good and started to get into producing documentaries. Not exactly how I'd imagine him going out, but he'll do him.
Hell yah thanks man!! i always try to watch these episodes right when they come out..
Fantastic vid! Love seeing things like this. I'm a relatively new Saturn adopter, and it's nice to have references like this vid to know what to look out for!
Wow! Your energy constantly depletes in Galaxy Force II just like that game Gauntlet.
Does anyone remember that game?
Power drift is awesome in the arcade, you absolutely need the steering controls to get the true experience, it also has some fun secrets!
They's been making these compilations for ages!😊
I'd really like to see more games that pushed the Saturn to its limits. I know there are videos of different systems but I've always been interested in what the Saturn can do given its complicated creation history.
Quick appreciation post for how sick the transitions between games always are
After Burner, Space Harrier and Out Run... HUGE Classic Arcade Games!!
7:23
Easily my favorite line in this episode!
"You think you can out run me?! Eat my thrust, loser!"
- Joe Redifer
wow, I remember playing some Sega Ages compilations on PS2, never tried Saturn version, good chance to see what they're like.
I always liked when past games are ported to newer systems as its often cheaper than buying a new system and the games on it. I got my 1st system in Xmas 95 Jan 96 as a Model 2 Genesis and I was only able to do NES and Snes games on ports like the Mega Man Anniversary collection or playing Contra and Super C on Contra 4 or the GBA ports of Breath of Fire and Castlevania. Sega Ages did some pretty good stuff over the years and we are lucky to have had it.
Damn late night upload huh? Keep it up Gamesack!! Y'all are the best with everything retro!!

In Fantasy Zone there are extra options to unlock as you play - one of which lets you adjust the rapid fire. Another lets you disable inflation in the shop. :)
Nothing like a sack of games to start my morning right!
The saturn is a beast and the best console from Sega ( the Dreamcast is just behind)
The delivery on that final Flicky joke was perfection
I wasn't a sega fan boy back then but that damn Out Run was just too fun.. Love Out Run..
I just noticed in After Burner 2, one of the explosion sound effects is the same stock sound effect used in Star Fox on the SNES when you crash.
Thank you for the episode, I actually learned a lot, like how the music in Power Drift is the same one used in Vocaloid (I knew about Outrun and Afterburner but not this one) I also learned that the arcade Flicky was released on the saturn too, I never seen it before, I even didn’t know about Columns 97, I gotta check those out.
Now, to teach you something you may not have known, Tant-R and Ichidant-R were actually released on the Switch in the west, and they belong to the Ponanza Bros series, also I prefer the Switch port of Outrun and Space Harrier because not only do they support wide screen but they have extra music, extra levels, and extra enhancements, but of course it’s to be expected from M2 at this point.
Super Hang On with super smooth scaling like on Outrun would have been awesome. Bet the Saturn could do it no problem perfectly.
I was quite surprised to hear about the comments about Power Drift. Overall, of all the games Sega ever released that utilized super scaler technology, Power Drift (along with Galaxy Force) were the most impressive due to their utilization of Sega's powerful Y-Board. Respectfully, Joe, I'm not sure were you making your statements about the release on the Sega Ages or about Power Drift in general? Even when Sega released System-32, even thou the pixelation was smaller, it didn't have psuedo realistic scaling/rotation the X and Y boards had. Even games like Rad Mobile, even thou they were technological more advanced, the number of sprites were much smaller and they had more pop up. Even thou Y-board was technically 16-bit, the fact that it had 3 Motorola's running at 12.5MHz and dedicated chip sets, it had greater output of latter 24 and 32 bit systems. Sega's hardware was just that advanced. One of the reasons why we had to wait for the Playstation 2 (32bit) to get an impressive release of Galaxy Force that did the arcade justice.
I still think it looks ugly.
Star Jacker and Fantasy Zone rock; two of my absolute favorites from Sega! I have the PCBs of both as well. Love the rest of the Saturn Ages stuff as well. I wish they would have kept it going with more of their G80, VCO and System 1/2/8 games. Who wouldn’t want to play Zoom 909, Tac/Scan or Turbo on the Saturn?
That After Burner 2 segment was awesome! 🤣
Yeah!...I remember Gauntlet. The best part was the sound test in Gauntlet 4 for the Genesis. The BGM tracks with their titles written within < > are amazing. I’ve started the game just to listen to that music a few times!!
Love the SA line on the Saturn!
Agreed they could've released some more arcade titles, like Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder instead of the memorial collections, but even still.
Also sega sonic the hedgehog arcade game.
@@maroon9273
Yeah that would've been great as well!
Loved seeing me some Space Harrier, and OutRun in these collections, 2 of my most favorite games of all time!! 👍👍
Awesome episode as always. Would be nice to have an episode dedicated to super scaler games like from Sega, Konomi and others.
Loved this episode + funny skit, Joe! Big thumbs up 👍
Powerdrift was one of the most impressive looking games at the time
Sega games look so raw and syntetic
Joe, don't quit your day job, but keep making great episode like this.
That 2nd half of the 1st game reminds me of Quiz and Dragons, by Capcom. I played it on one of the Capcom Arcade Collections on PS2 (which I really like, it has a great version of Forgotten Worlds, where you can use the right analog stick to aim instead of a left and right with 2 buttons) and found it pretty entertaining, especially since all the questions were from like 92 and before.
Always good to see some Sega Ages. Looking forward to the PS2 video.
Everytime you upload I get this nagging to try and get my brother to bring some Master System and Saturn stuff to swap for the SNES and 3DO. My coworker is adamant that I should emulate as my ctr isn't very big either so maybe it is an option. Thanks for the memories!
33:21 Part of me really hopes that Shigeru Miyamoto starts signing his name like that, followed up by a big ol' **it eating grin. It makes me treasure him even more.
Get him to sign your Paper Mario Sticker Star hehehehehe.
Columns is a notoriously adequate game.
Fingers crossed for a Gameshack overview of Sega 3D Classics Collection, which includes some of the SuperScaler games in this episode.
The after burner commentary is golden
Game Sack needs many more Saturn episodes
Joe, you didn't notice it seems that you can select between original movement speed and double speed for both Phantasy Star 2 and 3 from the main menu (The hiragana and katana choice is only applicable to PS1). I could never play the originals with the super slow movement speed after playing all 4 games first on the Saturn collection! A huge quality of life improvement!
The load times in and out of battle for PS4 are a bit of bummer but it's only like 2 seconds going into battle, not a big deal. All in all, its a phantastic collection!
I remember Gauntlet! Good memories of local multiplayer Gauntlet II on the Atari ST
The cart racer had a sweet arcade booth modelled after the cart which tilted by turning
Yes, I think you will find that there are quite a few folk who remember Gauntlet...
Also, I have seen a Head On arcade machine - in the Searle's Holiday Camp (in Hunstanton, UK) arcade circa 1982. I seem to recall it was in black and white, though... anyone know if there were both B&W and colour versions?
Hi there, just wanted to thank you for your contribution to the gaming community. Your content is very good. I also like nostalgia nerd among others. Thanks again. All the best.
Hey Joe, I remember Gauntlet! Do you remember Gauntlet on NES, Gauntlet IV on Genesis, Gauntlet Legends on Dreamcast, and Gauntlet Dark Legacy on OG Xbox?
I really appreciate all that you do for these RUclips videos.
I always seem to like the videos about games I've never played (aka most Sega stuff) on consoles I've never owned (aka...all Sega stuff). I especially like retrospectives, just big chunks of history on one particular topic. So I got high hopes for this episode.
OMG Power drift ! I loved that on the ZX Spectrum, ah memories
There was an ice cream place up in Loveland that had a Pengo machine in perfect condition. Outside of that, I've never seen it before.
Love me some Sega Ages. 👌😌 The US missed out on a bunch of them but at least we got a good collection.
Your interpretation of Afterburner is gold
I had no idea about these releases, this was a great episode, thanks!
I love the ending of your videos you crack me up
I love your call on Power Drift. I can't decide if I like or dislike the game either. I think my biggest gripe about the game is the camera movement in the corners. It shifts away from the turn, and I feel it would be better if the camera shifted into the turn, almost like a look ahead or apex cam.
The bonus rounds in Gunstar Heroes are Treasure's little nod to Flicky.
The Sega 3D Classics are my favorite versions of most of these games.
The SEGA AGES Wonder Boy collection is fantastic but I ended up just buying carts anyway, lol. Love that series.
"Tate mode" I really hope you do an episode on just "Tate mode" games soon. With page monitors, it's really easy to rotate and play some of the Dreamcast games in tate mode, such as Ikaruga and gunbird 2.
Wow, I'm amazed Sega Ages is coming to an end. Hope you do release more Sega Ages videos!
it had a good run, but sadly all things must come to an end.
Picked up my US working designs - sega ages on saturn a few years back. Good call considering the price now.
been a fan of gamesack since 2015 thanks for keeping it going after Dave left Joe
When you say, "goes straight to hell," or "go to hell." Lol! 🤘❤
I remember gauntlet. I played gauntlet 2 a lot at my cousin's house since it was a 4 player game. We used game genie though for infinite life since we sucked at the game and never completed the it. A few years ago I found out that there is no ending which explains why we always stopped from boredom and never finished it.

I remember Gauntlet Joe...that's the game where you play as a Space Marine fighting off hoards of Zeus's minions on Mount Olympus, right? Wait, I remember now! It's a kind of tic-tac-toe with a Wizard that always shoots the food. ;)
Joe, you're awesome. Tell Dave we all said "hello".
12:43 *APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD*
Oh this is awesome. I always wondered about this collection. Plus lots of amazing titles. So many series that were part of a legacy. Never owned a Saturn, but this is fantastic to see coverage of in one video
Hey who dislikes this cornucopia of awesome sauce?! Shame on them
The Power Drift part was painful to watch. I've not had problems with bouncing off the tires since my first few plays of the arcade version. The Grand Prix mode means you get to play 25 tracks in a session instead of 5 (6 if you get the Hang On or After Burner bonus track).
I have both Memorial Selections mostly because I love UpnDown on the C64 and Atari 800.
Though unofficial version, there is Outrun that runs on Cannonball Engine which is the definitive version of Outrun
It's always struck me that the majority of the Super Scaler games were only worth experiencing in their original arcade format, especially Power Drift and Galaxy Force - even if the home platform had the grunt to run them, the very heart of the title was lost.
Tonight on Joe sabotages my chances of a healthy sleep pattern:
No sympathy. It's 08:14 where I am, and I'm only now going to bed.
Also sabotages my chances of getting a cheap copy of outrun on the saturn.
