I am from Assam. I like to watch classic kannada films like Mouni. I watched this film in DD1 and i watche this movie 3 times . I like it. I love the acting of dattaatreya ji and sankarnaag ji. I like movies based on the stories of great writer U.R.Ananthamurthy. I also like late Girish kanard ji.
Watch "Dweepa" Kannada classical movie... I like that movie..

To all the people who are wondering about the significance of the last seen (scene) -
Kavade is another form of dice (used in the western society). Kavade signifies the possibilities, probability, chance, gamble, opportunities. Kavade basically represents progression which translates to prosperity.
Now, in the ending, Appanna who is shown to dislike and resent Kuppanna passionately, turns out to be the opposite. He just wanted Kuppanna Bhatta's attention.
When he shows concern and prepares to give back the property, and tries to forcefully place the key in Kuppanna's hand, he realizes that Kuppanna had held the Kavade in hand. Which means that Kuppanna was playing a game of possibilities, he had to endure the hardship to reappear in the game with the upper hand, and that is getting back his property (without asking), which again, translates to prosperity. Therefore, Kuppanna prospered at the cost of his own respect which eventually showed him who really cared about him.
In short, Appanna who resented Kuppanna, eventually turned out to be the only person who showed concern, and cared for Kuppanna.
Or probably Appanna Bhatt learns from those cowries shell that Kuppanna bhatta was still playing with chances and Kupanna hadn't got any 'Kopparige nidhi', which Appanna was all the time claiming about Kuppanna's sudden change in life. Dattanna speaks something about the movie in the below link:

@@yathirajsharma5662, the cowries symbolize uncertainty, confusion, inability to delineate, chaos on the dark side. The explanation with respect to the bright side is in the original comment.
The film banks on the idea of gamble which changes everything as far as the interpretations are concerned. There is no one right answer. There are outcomes depending on possibilities based on exposure and probability based on experience.
For example - when you visit a zoo, you see a tiger. another person who entered the zoo at the same time sees a cotton candy store. What you think, what you really long for, is what you get. Now apply this analogy to the film and the outcome will be extremely chaotic (complex).
When you add gambling to the equation, the existence becomes black and white, binary takes precedence, it's all about 0s and 1s, Yes or No, True or False. There are no grey areas in this paradigm. Therefore, when one gambles, one either wins or loses, not both.
In specific to the film, the introduction of the cowries doesn't signify anything by itself, it's only a prop. However, Kuppanna Bhatta holding the Kavade changes the outcome of the film based on a viewer's perspective. Hence the abrupt ending.
A viewer who wants to see the ending as a negative is allowed to do so. A viewer who wants the film to end on a positive note will also be considered as a usable statistic.
Now, Kuppanna Bhatta was waiting to make a profit. At the same time, his family left him. He lost his respect. He was mocked. He was considered naive, even though he wasn't. Appanna Bhatta resented him till the end. A man in pursuit of happiness is aware of the existence of happiness. A man in pursuit of revenge is aware of the possibility of an incoming mercy plea.
In this case, Appanna Bhatta had an expectation. Kuppanna Bhatta crushed his expectation as trivial. This lead to the confusion in Appanna Bhatta.
Imagine, only Appanna Bhatta and Kuppanna Bhatta are in the film. There is nobody to influence, nobody to change the outcome, nobody to promote rush. Then, speaking of the outcome, the film ended on a positive note for Kuppanna Bhatta, and ended with a negative note for Appanna Bhatta.
@@muktartha I didn't get the point we were talking on. Anyway, even if there weren't any cowrie shells, the climax wouldn't have got affected much in my opinion. What struck me the most is the point that Kuppanna Bhatta became indifferent towards everything - the mockery, the care shown by 'Bodamma' and finally the compassion of Appanna Bhatta. He in fact became a mouni, indifferent towards everything in the world!
@@yathirajsharma5662, The Kavade made all the difference in the film climax, without which Kuppanna Bhatta would be expected to give a reaction or a response to Appanna Bhatta's action (handing over the keys). Kavade is the only inanimate prop in the film that has the capacity to create interpretations in the viewers based on the context and the timing of it's introduction. In short, Kavade was introduced to promote extended thinking based on interpretations. This is exactly why we are having this conversation.
"Mouna" doesn't signify indifference in the film. It echoes stillness. Chaos can be understood only when one displays stillness, not only in appearance, but also in thinking. Presentation is for the 5 senses. The "Thinking" cannot be represented to satisfy the 5 senses. Hence, Kavade is used to let viewers know that Kuppanna Bhatta's thoughts (possibilities and probability) were still in motion.
@@muktartha By indifference I meant the same - the state of stillness. Or with that state of stillness one doesn't show any particular 'interest' towards anything. Suppose the climax ran like this: Kuppanna had not cowries in his hands. Appanna tries to hand over the key to Kuppanna, but Kuppanna's hands do not hold the key and the key falls off. Kuppanna isn't dead. He isn't voluntarily rejecting the keys (out of 'ahankaara' or hatred towards Appanna or by the thought that it is 'no use' accepting the keys after losing respect). It happens involuntarily . This shocks Appanna.
I am just trying to figure out myself why I am not yet getting convinced about the cowrie shells by other reasons.

Life is often compared to gamble like a game of dice. Just as a player makes a move by rolling the dice to win the game, every person takes a step forward to succeed in life, just as Kuppanna changed his profession in his bid to improve his position. Taking this analogy forward, Kuppanna throwing away the dice in the end is symbolic. It can be interpreted as his acceptance of defeat in the game of life.
This is not a story. Based on reality. Earlier this was happening in the villages of north and south kanara districts of Karnataka. Now all improved by God grace. Excellant acting from Sri. Dattatreya and great Anantnag. Experienced Childhood days remembered after seeing this picture today. I pray God never repeat this type of pain to anybody.

excellent movie with excellent acting, Ending is left to the viewer, I understood it as kuppanna bhatt went to mouna vratha ( no response to external world )
Honestly this is one of the finest Kannada movie I have ever seen in my mother tongue Kannada. What an amazing actors we have like Anant Nag and Dattanna and let us not forget Soundarya. They bring life to characters. It’s sad it is never shown to international audiences.

The conflict between the raw nature of Kuppanna Bhatta and refined nature of Appanna Bhatta is interesting and thought-provoking. Despite his honesty and truthfulness, Kuppanna's failure in life can be attributed to his asocial and stubborn nature. On the contrary, despite being selfish, cunning and manipulative, Appanna flourished due to his pleasing and helpful nature. The story seems to suggest that affable and flexible nature are necessary to succeed in life.

This movie having real life story of village people.what a wonderful acting by Dattanna sir.
There are many situations which are resembling to my family as I came from village I know how people treat when you do not grow anything in field.
Most important storekeeper attitude is completely same, yes it is true we cannot be same all the time. Because shop keeper needs money to bring new items and than get profit.
True fact in villages is selfishness in the relationship exist.
Last message in the movie was grt . We cannot leave with Kavade shastras nor astrology things.

Masterpiece movie at low cost
Kuppanna bhatta throwing kavade down signifies he has given up in the game called 'life' which often is like a jooju(bet game). That's how I understand it.
Him losing everything he had along with his family signifies his state of deep silence ( Mouni ) contemplating about how life is unfair and how he too was unfair to the society and people around him. He doesn't have the sanctity to pontificate to the society because of his mistakes too. The only way to express his state is to be silent and just throw in the towel. Mouni- which is also the title of the movie.
Came here for lockdown but the msg in the end is so amazing! Its so complex that ppl even today fail to decode! Awesome movie❤. Other movies i liked were; ತಪ್ಪಿದ ತಾಳ, bettada jeeva.
Decode for me? I am amiss at the ending. I know A Mouna is the taking of silence but failed to see it's connection with the story ending.
