Replacing the seals on a hydraulic cylinder; How to Disassemble a John Deere Lift Cylinder

  • I have never worked on hydraulics so when the lift cylinders on my bucket loader started leaking after 14 years of abuse I decided to try the job myself.
    This is a 541 loader from about 2004 on a Deere 5520 (same year). Deere has several different types of cylinders on their products. This can be done by the average guy but it probably is best just to take it into a hydraulics shop.
    Another experience to cross off the bucket list! I'd sure welcome comments/critiques from people who do this for a living.

    Well, it's been a year and there's no leak and power seems 100%! Thanks for the comments and tips.

    I will try the hose clamp again. Thanks. Make sure you use red locktite on the nut. Mine fell off. The wee bit of locktite failed.

    I have an old (1973) Deere 70 skid steer. I recently changed the tilt and lift o-rings and seals (first time in 40 years) and it was much easier than what you went through.

    Great video. Totally agree with you on taking a cylinder, and rebuild kit to a hydraulic shop. I’ll do it,and gladly pay them. Pick it up in a day or two.

    Every time I ever took anything to the hydraulic shop I would get a call that this was worn out and that was worn out and by the time they would get done I could almost buy a new cylinder. I started rebuilding them myself and not changing the saft and half the stuff they said it would need and never had any problems the shop always said I would have.

    Extremely helpful! Thanks for uploading. Was wondering how to get that big metal ring back in the cylinder, the hose clamp is smart.

    I’ve never used that “filler ring tool” never seen a purpose for it. I’m doing bucket cylinders on a old 175 JD loader Tomorrow maybe I’ll try it just to use it

    did mine in one afternoon, cost $104 for the rings for all four cylinders the hardest part was getting the nut off but I hooked up the rod on the tractor using the pin and used a breaker bar.
    was quoted about $100 per cylinder.
    good video thanks

    When you disassembled it were you able to tell what failed to cause it to leak? I took the four cylinders for my 5210 into a shop, paid 1400$ and put them back on and two still leaked. Brought them back and they "fixed" them again. The whole reason I had a shop do it was time, and getting it right the first time. I now need to reseal my 49 back how boom cylinder, and also the cylinder on my 4n1 bucket. Seal kits by themselves still are not cheap, but I will definitely be doing it myself. Thanks for the video!

    A branch hit the hydraulic cylinder on my John Deere tractor and broke the connector/nipple off of the cylinder where the hose attaches to it. Do you know if it can be screwed out or do I have to buy a brand new cylinder?

    Make that a 15/16 half in. drive with a LONG breaker bar.

    The cost from John Deere and a hydrolic shop was $300 or so for EACH cylinder !!! Also finding the seal kit for this cylinder has been a real pain. JD has again split the seal kit into 2 parts. How many seals and orings was in your kit ?

    That yellow band on the piston might be a teflon ring. The have no memory to speak of. When you stretch it to go on the piston most times they won't snap back to shape like an o-ring will, The secret to putting those on is to put it in the oven, set the temp to 400 degrees then take it out as soon as the oven reaches that temp, you don't want a puddle of teflon. Then quickly put it on the piston. bring that right into the kitchen because if you have to go out to the tractor, it'll probably cool off too much. When it cools off it should be about the original size, if not put a hose clamp on it and tighten it gently, not too tight, that should press it back into shape. The heat expands it and softens it so it will give easier. when it cools it returns to about it's original size and firms back up.
    Tip, wear dish washing gloves. Remember that ring is now 400 degrees. The gloves insulate just enough so if you move quickly you won't get burned. but aren't so bulky that you lose tactile ability. I worked in a hydraulics repair shop for twenty years and trust me, it works like a charm.

    Did you need to add any hydraulic fluid to top it off after you reassembled it since you disassembling it?

    • @TheFritz423
      @TheFritz423  7 лет назад +2

      Filled it to the "max" line on the dipstick, then started the tractor until it warmed. Topped it off after that

    I have mine almost completely reassembled, I'm having a horrible time trying to hammer it back in though, even with hose clamp I can't get the internal snap ring to go into it's grove, it's ok to hammer the piston? Piston doesn't bottom out first? I've been trying to just hammer the cap (using wood blocks so I don't damage it)

    • @TheFritz423
      @TheFritz423  4 года назад

      Hmm. The hose clamp has to hold the internal ring in it's groove on the gland until the gland gets in far enough so the hose clamp is pushed up, at which point it can be removed. Did you lube it all up well?

    Use a brass punch to drive in the gland in. Be sure to clean the inside of the barrel no sharps in there.
    The gland should no be that hard to slide on the rod.

      TheFritz423 unfortunately it didn’t come with the seal kit. Where else can I get it from. The guys at John Deere have no idea what I’m talking about and the hydraulic place near me of corse wants me to bring it to them to do.

    • @TheFritz423

      Are yours lift cylinders from a 541 loader? If they are any other model (or brand) there could be different ways to remove the cylinder head. If they are let me know and I'll go find the kit in my large pile of discarded crap I call a garage.

    I have a 5410 and just had the exact same cylinder serviced. When I reinstall it, do I need to bleed it?

      No I don't think so. Air will just move out of the lines into the reservoir.
