I have made jokes that the new cars look like primer with a clear coat and your experiment proved my joke to be not a joke.
The van looks good and I am glad it was saved from the scrap heap, I don't know if I would have went with light gray primer with a 2k clear over it but it does look to be similar to all the grays that Europe and Japan are doing.

    • @RustedRides
      @RustedRides  5 месяцев назад

It does look super similar. Saw and f150 the other day that had to be soooo close in color. The porsche grey is pretty nice looking

Yeah don't call yourself stupid you're not stupid far from it and I've never seen anybody put a $300 paint kit paint job on a car and make it look so damn good you're awesome at what you do keep up the great work and I'm going to keep watching your videos

We had nothing but Minivans and other Dodge vehicles growing up. My dad worked for Chrysler and we got to hear all about how Lee Iacocca saved his job because of the minivan. The van looks good and it brought back a lot of memories for me. Thanks for the video!

Years ago, early 80’s or so, a friend painted his 1938 Hotrod Chevy dashboard with primer then cleared it. It turned out really nice. I’m in the process of painting my dear departed parents 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo with Rustoleum Turbo white spray cans. I’m doing a panel at a time at my leisure and I must say for a cheap paint job it looks pretty decent. The coverage is phenomenal. Give it s try! 👍😎

I currently have a 1994 Chrysler LeBaron LX sedan 3.0L V6 and it is in INCREDIBLE shape. But the dang paint peels off. But the interior is so similar to the Voyageur / Caravan. Same room console with the sunglasses holder and digital compass. Same gauge cluster. Same column shifter. Same digital fuel economy gauge, etc.
    I Love it.

Finally. I’ve been checking your channel every day for the next video. Love your channel. As I mentioned in an earlier comment, it’s great to see you guys proving that this work can be done on a budget without the fancy shops, materials and equipment. Absolutely love the fact that Cam makes body panel parts from old cabinets and lockers. Anyone can buy panels and bolt them on but to build them from cabinets is an art.
I would love to see tutorial on how cam makes these body panels.

I've owned many of those vans when I had a courier company. They'll haul 2000lbs before things start to break. Same chassis as a K car so the junk yards were full of them in the 90's and parts were plentiful. You guys did a fantastic job and it looks great. Painting the wheel wells and wheels was the icing on the cake.

There are some people really loving these vans, I hope the community around them will keep growing. We have a francophone forum, for France , Belgium, and maybe Switzerland here.
I saved 2 of them, a 95 with nearly no options ( my daily ) with a propane kit on it, and a very clean 93 A/C, cruise control, electric mirrors and front windows, tilt colunm, original roof rack with sliding bars, both are 2.5 L gasoline, they are less common than the 2.5 turbo diesel in Europe.

When premium manufacturers started offering those grey primer-like colors we used to make fun of those who bought them, like "you buy an expensive car but you can't afford proper paint?"
But to be honest, if you have an old vehicle and you just want to get as much use out of it as possible while not looking like a hobo or hillbilly, that seems to be a legit solution.

You could have bought a cheap white metallic flake to put in that clear coat. It would have looked like one of the paints the current gen Clio has.
It's basicaly nardo gray from afar, but when you get close to it, it starts sparkling, because of the sparkles that are in the clear coat. Very subtle effect.
    Primer is so weirdly versatile.
I wonder how much color pigment can put into it. 🤔

Did this years ago with the DupliColor lacquers from AutoZone. Did not wear a good mask got sick as hell. But it turned out pretty nice on my S10. And if you're going to get a vintage minivan it's got to be Astro van all-wheel drive Anne swedish doors.

I used to have an old hatchback and the rear wheel arches rusted out, & me being as cheap as I am; I went to the junk yard & got two front fenders off the same kind of car, cut out the rust & cut the old fender curves & welded them in. Some Bondo & paint & it was good as a brand new used one!

That turned out pretty sweet! I’m a fan of those old vans, too, I had plans to find a decent one and make a mini camper out of it. Out here in the Maritimes they have mostly rusted away but I did see a nice Plymouth version for sale last year. Someone else beat me to it, though. They also did a cargo van version that was neat, too. Cool idea with the clear coated primer. Did kind of the same thing many years ago on one of the original Minis - it was white and my buddy wanted the roof red. We had some spray cans of red oxide primer and some of clear coat so that’s what we did it with. Held up for the next two years he owned it, at least. I’d like to see how you guys deal with the backs of the new panel sections you weld in. I usually spray some primer then the asphalt type underseal for areas out of sight but I’d be interested in your idea of best way. 👍🏻

Thank you! Ya we are happy with how it turned out, and good to know you've tried it in the past and it held up for at least those two years. A camper conversion would be pretty sweet in one of these. There are a couple hanging around the shop, one of them is a woody! As for the body patches, we spray the backside with black oil non drip undercoat, but if you can get in there and spread seam sealer over the joint first that's great

In short, this is my experience.
Yes, you can clear over primer, but dont expect it to last more than 2-3 years before the UV rays from the sun to break the primer down to chalky crap and the clear to start lifting in sheets.
Body shop used white primer as the white in graphics on a car of mine, and three years later the clear over the white was blowing off in fist sized flakes.
