Doctor Joseph White, was my true mentor for thirty years. Dr. White got me into U C Irvine and U C Berkeley and I am the Psychologist, I am today, due to being Mesmerized by Dr. Joseph White. After leaving the Veterans Administration, retired, I starting writing books and I just wrote what I knew and my personal experiences. Every novel I ever written, I sent a copy of my book to Joe and I was so surprised that he never felt to call me and Joe would say: "I Just Loved Reading Your Book Jerome; You Just Keep On Writing" Now That I Am On My Ninth Book, I Just Keep On Keeping On, Writing About The Black Plight, Taught by Dr. Joseph White.
    Dr. Jerome Michael Manley, Psy.D.,MPH.

“Throughout the first years of our lives we were forced not just to internalize a few aspects of capital, but to build up a structure of internalizations. As our capacity for coherent natural self-regulation was systematically broken down, a new system of self regulation took its place, a coherent system, incorporating all the aspects of self-repression. We participated in capital’s ongoing project of colonization by colonizing ourselves, by continually working at the construction of a unitary character-structure (character armor), a unitary defense against all drives, feelings, and desires which we learned were dangerous to express. In the place of our original transparent relations to our world, we created a structure of barriers to our selfexpression which hides us from ourselves and others.”Jay Amrod and Lev Chernyi, “Beyond Character and Morality: Towards Transparent Communications and Coherent Organization.” Howard J. Ehrlich ed. Reinventing Anarchy, Again (San Francisco, California: AK Press, 1996), 321

This interview follows Parham's and Cross's interviews that shaped Black psychology to identify the evolving of racial identity of Black people in the U.S. I found this final character study I have done has helped me locate the encouragement I need to really delve into my subject as I move along with my dissertation process. I am so glad I took the time to review this tape because it gave a strong historical representation of the efforts he and other psychology professionals such as the Clarks, civil rights icons we are more familiar with as well as White's colleagues made to authenticate our struggles with racism and discrimination that has always been a part of our lives. I think every Black student, particularly every Black student interested in social work, psychology and human services professions should peep this interview. As far as I am concerned it is a history lesson that I certainly needed to understand the importance of academic work that addresses issues we want to address and design solutions for in our communities.
This gave me an experience I would have never encountered in my educational community.
    Sincerely,
    Dr. Sister A.

Great interview. I watched the video with a clear question. Where is applied black psychological practice, and how is it connected to Afrikans in the uk. With a view to identifying a competent nexus of Afrikan practitioners in South London linked to statutory mental health agencies.
In the uk a bundle of PhDs integral to a middling class have emerged over past 30 years. They seem fixed in the state of Dr Whites 1st 25 years, albiet with a post usa African president, neo black aversion to building community connected structures. They appear both fearful of the career opportunity cost, and, in a Janus love hate relationship to the illusionary colour blind responsible property class black verses underserving ghetto black paradigm.
The politics has matured very little towards establishing firmly community linked self identifying professional skilled Afrikan change agents. Pros appear to merely occupy a ghettoised sub cultural space in a white capital paradigm.
The usa journey serves as both hope and frustration given the intensity of disproportionate academic and political power militating against uk Afrikans. Distraction and hopelessness seem to be the challenge here. Needing leverage from our cousins in the usa.

It's been a year since your comment/posting. Surely not much, if anything has changed. That's disappointing, but a sad reality. These "Afrikan" shrinks are every bit as damaged and useless as ever. Being of Afrikan bloodlines born and living in the US, I can honestly tell you that unless these people actually find themselves and live in reality as dictated by centuries of white supremacy, they will stay delusional and useless! Having the scholarship and experiences they have, none of their shit is properly applied to help Black people out of the horrible sets of circumstances we continually find ourselves in. These people often have personal issues that they still hide from and deny partially because it's their programming and personal bullshit that prohibit them from being of any good usage.
