You're Probably BREAKING Your Harley CLUTCH in WRONG!

  • Over the years, I've had the opportunity to break in numerous new Harley-Davidson clutches, whether it's on a fresh-off-the-lot bike or one fitted with new clutch plates. As a motorcycle Instructor, I've honed a specific process based on real-world experience. This method not only accelerates the break-in period for your Harley's clutch but also ensures the widest and smoothest friction zone possible, reducing overall grabbiness in the clutch plates.

    As a person with small hands..I had fined tuned the clutch and had it perfect after adjusting the plastic OEM clutch adjuster. I just changed the OEM to the fat bagger piece and my clutch was impossible to tune it back to where I had it. I have small hands. I now had to get new levers in order to make it work for me.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  2 месяца назад

      Yah, levers for small hands are the way to go for sure. Get it right wehre you want it. Even if you adjust the clutch cable, the plates will wear and you'll have to adjust again and again.

    • @RyanUrlacher

      OEM style kit is all we use on our police bikes. They are solid. When we do finally need a clutch down the road, we do upgrade to Screamin' Eagle clutch, just for a little longer life.

    Just started my cone practice patterns, after my 1000 mile breaking on 24RG. Man, that throttle is sensitive (even in rain mode). My throttle control during slow speed maneuvering is jerky. Guess, more I practice, the smoother my throttle control will be, it's challenging. I pay attention to engine temp reading (trip button readings), it gets hot quickly.

      That's true, every time I get a new bike its an adjustment period figuring out my new one now. I find if I can stay in 2nd gear with a small amount of gas to be better for corners, but I have had a really nice clutch that was broken in on a older bike, it was loose, wide range, and super forgiving, and wouldn't jerk before on the electra glide.

    Absolutely you’re putting it through a heat cycle. You should break in your brakes the same way especially on a car truck or something. You put new brakes on it’s called seeding them.

    Hmm… I bought a 2023 RoadGlide was practicing friction zone for a good 30 minutes until I notice my fan was constantly on and my clutch pull was really bad.
    Clutch adjustment is not new to me, and I did that to my last Harley at 5k miles. But this was around 300 miles. Then I said to myself, it’s the way I use that bike. So next day I just see if it gets better. Stays the same for the next 3 days until I decided to release the auto-adjuster spring on the cable and reseat it when it’s firm.
    There broke in! What did I achieve from this? Possibly an early Clutch repair that will be due based on abuse, so I try to not do friction zone practices anymore and had a similar class that I was about to use my motorcycle and decided to opt for using the class’s motorcycle.
    I’ve been riding and wrenching for at least a good 12 years. And I can tell you, the only thing you need to brake in is your engine and your tire. Everything else is just abuse and worn out sooner.

      I actually have 22,000 miles on my original clutch on my police bike. I've trained and ran it daily. I have seen new students overuse the friction zone and that will definitely not be good. We train them to work out of that issue. If you use it right, it will last a very long time, even when training adn riding hard. ride safe

    • @famman8729
      @famman8729 2 месяца назад

      @@RyanUrlacherstudents typically have too high rpm while fully in the friction zone while standing on the rear brake, which can kill a clutch quickly. A well trained motor office will ride the course hard, yet be in and out of the friction zone due to muscle memory.
      You are correct sir.

      @@RyanUrlacher Take a bucket of piss and called it Granny’s Peach Tea.
      Was not even using the rear brake at all. I in fact never use my rear break. The practice that I was doing was swerving left and right between 5 stops and repeating in a loop pattern for 30 minutes.
      Not my usual practice, was just giving this a shot. Anywho this is the internet. Better yet this is RUclips. Any comments is true to the general public long as someone else never experienced this. And when they do, they don’t have the balls to admit they did. After all this content is to promote friction zone, of course nothing can go wrong until something actually goes wrong.
      I rest my case. I’m no usual rider. And I wasn’t born yesterday just keep those two in mind. And I gave up promoting content to RUclips about 2 years ago. Obviously I have a real life career behind a camera.
