"Mera beta IITian banega" is a phrase you often hear in Indian households. The dream of becoming an IITian is ingrained in the minds of many Indian students and their families. The IIT brand is seen as a beacon of hope, a ticket to upward mobility and social status. Students spend years pouring over textbooks, sacrificing their social lives, and attending coaching centers in pursuit of this dream. But do the Indian Institutes of Technology truly deliver on these aspirations? Are they really that different from other engineering colleges in India?
In this video, we take a closer look at the quality of IITs and explore whether the "IIT brand" is just hype or if it can truly be justified. We'll dive into the facts and figures, and ask the question on everyone's mind - is the IIT dream worth the sacrifices?

As an IIT Kanpur EE fresher, I'm not convinced that IITs don't provide social and emotional skills to students. Yes, freshers coming into IITs are socially drained people, but over 4 years, the clubs, fests, and highest independence of any Indian college turn them into creative human beings. The exposure you get from CEOs, film stars, and scientists visiting the campus is incredible. Just some time ago, HC Verma sir Himself came to meet us.
The gender ratio is the only thing that hurts, though it has improved from like 10:1 to around 3.5:1 because of the female quota.

the hype around this examination is in the number of students appearing vs the number of seats in total, for a general category aspirant getting into an IIT is a big achievement because of the competition and this is the reason why i have a lot of admiration for those who are able to get through, but because 99.9% of us are not gonna be able to get into it so there's no sense of being depressed about it either, life can definitely be better for a person who didn't study in IIT than an IIT graduate, so we can be hopeful always!

Because we've made such a culture that only science is seen as a valuable stream, also it ensures your future in multiple careers
Many students take science because of getting good jobs 😂 they don't take science to make invention and don't have aim to solve problems of our country which is related with science
i agree with you every stream is really important except arts. arts is most useless stream you can opt for. all other streams are really good and i really support indulging in sports
Tbh I think science is definitely the most important stream as engineers and doctors took humanity to where it is today...

IIT IS NOT EVERYTHING, BUT SOMETHING BIG.. VERY BIG..., I THINK PREPARATION OF IIT TEACHES A LOT TO STUDENT AT AGE OF 16-18......
They want to study in iits not for learning about technologies but for getting crores packages. This is the thing that hurts.
@@palakagarwal1986 some study for freedom and improving themselves... not all r same... iits r great platform for self work...
@@palakagarwal1986 some part of students may enter in iit with that intent but not all..
For instance one of my friend with AIR 48 took engineering physics rather than cse becoz he was interested in the subject..
it doesnt teach shit. all it creates is socially excluded teens. The only real life lesson we learn is hardwork and confidence since we cracked jee.
bruh ask the student about their preparation journey, many are suffering from depression, lack of confidence, bad health due to sitting a lot etc etc. The percentage of student's who benefit from JEE preparation is relative small and those students are also extremely academically gifted.
I think the main problem with our system is that we perceive certain skills to be 'much better' than others. If we were to randomly ask students which profession they would want to choose for themselves, most of them would choose from engineering, medicine, legal practice, chartered accountancy, civil services, etc. There is nothing wrong with these careers. The problem lies in the fact that students are opting for these professions not because of their genuine interests in these fields, but because they feel that other fields are not even an option. Naturally, if you get into a field in which you are not genuinely interested, and on top of that, if you see that as the only means to improve your life, then mediocrity and frustration is natural. One cannot deliver anything in such a situation, be it an IITian or a non-IITian.
Is there scope in other fields in india is there a market for that, answer is no what should one do then, india is a poor country, people don't have money here.

Yes... People think that IIT is something great and IIT graduates are immediately given higher roles in foreign.
The reason why IITians are hired in US and other countries is because even after giving extra training to IIT Graduates, companies find an IITian cheaper than the resource of their own country.
what you have written here is utter non-sense.
I can speak for the education part in Physics dept:
Almost every prof is very good in their research area. However, it is not often the case that they are also good at teaching. In fact, majority of students don't wanna attend classes because its often the case that the content is way too rigorous (often the case in physics). Also, due to so many years of experience in their fields, profs assume we know certain things, hence while teaching such rigourous stuff they often skip some imp. concepts.
However, excellent profs do exist. These are pure legends and you wouldn't wanna a single class. So, overall its like any generic case (with very less spoon feeding).
For the comment that "since research is good we would be taught latest stuff"....
Nooooo, this is not necessarily true. A standard curriculum is followed for any course. So, its kinda like monotonous. If you wanna know latest stuff, you have to go out of your way to ask the prof how the things that are taught are related to the latest research.
Congrats Mohak for 2M subscribers!!! Hats off to your dedication and consistency!!
Man, you are humble, that's captivating. Saying best or worst are the two extremities of the same pendulum, we gotta stay in the mean position. One shouldn't let his rage of not getting into IIT turn into aversion, because aversion is a destructive form of attraction itself(we crave what we don't have). And at the same time not getting overtly attached to the idea of getting into it.

I am a founder and have hired 2 IITs n till now. One of them was okay I would say like acceptable & timely work was delivered throughout their tenure while the other had absolutely no idea about what he was doing.
We had to even spend more on his training than we had to for someone our basic college graduates.
But I do know IIT kids as well who are excellent ideators and have immense potential. Actually being a part of their ecell groups I have realised that these kids are no different but just have a higher will to do things hence they end up clearing difficult exams but that does not add to your skills. They are just proof of your dedication.
So don't make IIT the goal. IIT is just a step to your success. You still need to continue to be opportunistic and always try to gain and advance in your core skills to actually make it. Remember learning is always from the cradle to the grave and your dedication to learning and growth should never stop, even if you have cleared IIT.

IITs & IIMs are great but students are more into to get huge packages than self learning. They think there is no need to learn something else because of that platform advantage. what we need from IITs is to give innovative ideas or work on a cause rather than doing same jobs like others. Steve jobs said a beautiful line regarding this "I want these students to build for others rather than saying Yes Sir"
@@venkatesh-con Then what is the difference between a student who got the same job as an IITian just by self learning rather than having a platform advantage. Eventually, Brain also behaves like a muscle. Preparing for IIT helps you in working out your brain. I think that helps a lot in the future whether you get into IITs or not. Even UPSC exam, right now focuses a lot on analytical skills, which makes it easier for engineers to crack it. As a 30 year old, my advice is to give your all in JEE preparation, whether you make it or not, it will help you a lot later in life. And if you make it, IITs provide a lot of freedom and infra to students compared to any other college in India. Things about social and emotional skills might be true, but you will learn them quickly once you get out of college and might even get better at it than most people.
What you said is true but do you really think all people are interested in the preperation itself? I mean people have their own interests. Let us consider someone wants to become a sportsman, what the hell will that person do by wasting time in JEE preparation? I think what you said applies only if the student is not so much into aspects which include academics. They say when knowledge becomes a compulsions, the mind does not tend to retain that information. What do you think sir ?
Kuch bhi 😂
Agreed with each and every point 🙌
9:30 . I think the Faculty needs to Have Good Research Exp. and Skills to teach. More than coming from a Diversity of Caste.

since childhood, I have been interested in science and specifically in physics, but as I passed class 10th, and came to 11th, I realized there is no enjoying of topics. now, it is just read the concept just know how to solve different types of problems and there you go, we are preparing you for jee. I lost all aspiration I had for physics at a point. You could only enjoy 11th and 12th if you have good teachers who not only clear the concepts also make it look interesting and give real life application. only then, it would feel like enjoying. Now, i am just preparing for jee for sake of preparing and i am actually not having a lot of fun studying. This system needs change as I didn't start my jee preparation to win a seat, but to aquire the knowledge and answers to concepts that had me question existence in my childhood (10 years old). for example I was not able to wrap my head around the fact that a plane is able to fly majestically in the sky, but we aren't.
do not get into that coaching trap, keep up ur curiosity, think practically, and dont take too much stress on low grades, and all, it doesnt matter which clg and what package u get, but u r following ur passion and dreams is whait is important, If u r passionate, ull surely find a solution and find a way to do whatever dreams u have. So, positively keep ur physics passion, fight for it, whatever it takes..
Same situation yaar

At 6:14 seems like Mohak sir is still fighting with his introvert nature. Still it takes to gut to come up with your own school & college backstory. By the way, thanx for covering a much needed topic!
Slip of the tongue can happen to anybody, him being an introvert or extrovert has nothing to do with it.
Yea I burst out of laughing at that time too 😅🤣🤣 Though I'm too preparing for JeE ! ...still can relate to his slip of tongue but I've a ques tht he could've just edited that part easily..!! y to show to the public such thing..??? any idea?

You're indeed right like even if you have capability to do something, but it's quite tough to explore your skill in this country especially when you belong from poor family
good to know that you're a student of economics bro. Both of us share the same educational background then...
Hi Mohak
I really find your videos aligned with my interest. Currently I am a sophomore at IITD majoring in Computer Science and Engineering. Its been more than a year and as far as I have explored yet, I am pretty sure " Not everyone could be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere " Quoting directly from my childhood cherish. I have met many "Machau" Log from different colleges.
Hey I took science due to peer pressure, but I want to go for business oriented career.
Even took drop now.😅 Got 98.5 %ile this year. (General female)
I am a bit interested in maths and cs.
What will you suggest for me?
(I still want to just make sure that I have a degree for an extent of stability that's why I took drop, felt like a safer and genuine path since I don't have enough idea of the real world.)
8:28 ye to common hai 🙂, bohot sare bacho ka pehla sapna cricket khelna hota hai . Mana ki cricket me competition iit se bhi jyada hai but atleast cricket ke liye passion hota hai aur koi pressure nahi hota
@shobhitraj688 yes that's the main reason why people sacrifice their passion
@shobhitraj688 agreed
@shobhitraj688 there is more competition in cricket than jee and neet combined, so it's obvious going to cricket completely is a big risk, but yes there r people who manage studies and sports together. I am in class 12 i play cricket only on weekends that too morning for 2-3 hrs and rest time studying because studying is more important as that's only gonna give job
My mantra is you keep working hard throughout the life, keep learning new things, Keep building professional network. That will guarantee a better success rather than work extremely hard to get in to iit and later get complacent in life. The day when we stop working on ourselves is the end of our journey in life.
Sahi kah rahe ho bhaiya
Proud of you 👍
As a guy currently in NIT, I'd say IITs are pretty worth it, keep working hard JEE peeps :)
AS BEING AN IITIAN I LOVED THIS VIDEO.
Nice informative video!!
The networking and placements part is a self fulfilling policy, most colleges don't get the adequate funding, and alumni keep their connections among the network of students and alumni
I am a physics hons. student and in my class the number of girls is very less... I also fell sometimes exactly the same thing...Boys may not understand but sometimes it feel bad...They may say it casually or create their own group...There are even one girls who misbehave for no reason...But because of this reason, many times I come home from college and close the door and cry and even sometimes i fell lonely in my class ... whatever..Love from West Bengal ❤️ mohak
It's ok it happens sometimes.. tc of urself ❤️ and stay away from that girl.. stand up for urself if she misbehaves next time..
Best of luck.
Mohak, I was at Narayana around that time. I remember those days very fondly. Ashutosh Nath and Ashok Nagrath taught me physics. They were charming people and the best teachers I ever had.
Which year? I was there in 2008-2009.
@Soch by Mohak Mangal same. 2008-2009. I remember talking to my friends in narayana about the mumbai attacks when they happened.
Mohak jaan, you are best anthropology teacher. 💯. Love for u from Islamabad.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS BIG BROTHER
As an IITIAN I think I am qualified to share my geniune experience. Currently I am pursuing masters from IIT Jodhpur which is 2nd generation IITs and have less facility than old iits. But I will have to disagree what you said about sports. IIT spends ample amount of money promoting sports and have carzy big sports complex. Also the point about mental health, we have student counsellor available in health care centre 24*7. It helps a lot of student who suffers from mental depressing. So, I think IITs really worth it.
Can I know what tf "M21PH015" means?
(just curious no offence)
As you are pursuing Master's, I am quite sure you liked the subject enough to go for higher studies. A lot of students don't have an interest in the subjects they start pursuing the problem lies there. There's no denial that IITs are some of the best in the world, but it is not that they are the only option out there.
@@hindustanimapper 🤣. Actually it's my institute email id where they also pin roll number with email for convenience
@@ShubhamRaj-mu8ol absolutely right. The time you spend to prepare for iit, it's really worth it. That's all I am saying. That doesn't mean there is no other option.
he is non iitian or nitian or iiitian he wont even know wht kinda experience and exposure these clgs give nd most importantly fees the exam jee it self teaches so much like thinking ability increasing we become more persistent etc
Good video. I just realized how impactful Rancho's character was in 3 idiots because sure, he is a hard-working guy who is really smart but also knows how do make friends and do social stuff and is very wise, but not only that, on top of that, the thing that I find more interesting about him is that he makes other people become more like him in that way instead of becoming like them even though it would probably have been a lot easier for him to have just become like everyone else to adjust and fit in with em.
Thanks for the video ,bhaiya . Can you make a video in the topic of branches of engineering ????
very good video, u explained very well the benefits of going to college and i was very confused about going or not
Dr Apj abdul kalam sir was not from IIT but still he is the most loved person without any haters...colleges can never decide your future ...if you want to do something for this country , you can do no matter where you study...
