    Jenny i really appreciate your videos i imagine you get tired of doing these all the time. i am 61 my first quilt block experience was at my grandmothers house i imagine i was maybe 7 and my grandma was a quilter she had some material and was cutting out blocks and i was bugging her about showing me how to sew. and she gave me a little box with blocks threaded me a needle sat me down and showed me how to sew them together by hand. i must of ripped those things out a dozen or more times till they were perfect then she had me put in a zipper. I was so proud of that little pouch but i hated the ripping but she insisted the blocks had to be perfect . didn't mess with blocks again till 90 then did a patchwork out of jeans by hand and didn't do another till this year. And i have enjoyed all of it the mistakes and all and it sure has bought back memories of my grandma sewing and my mom my grandmas machine was on old singer that you had to move that big black metal part on the bottom and she sewed and crocheted everything never bought a pattern for anything she would see something grab newspapers and start cutting and next thing you knew she was sewing sometimes she didn't bother with the newspapers shed go straight to the material cut and sew same with all her other needle work she just did it . thank you for being you for not putting on airs for not being perfect for giving so much

      I was born about an hour north of Hamilton on my Grandparents farm outside of Hatfield, Mo. My Grandma sewed on a treadle sewing machine also. If you saw something you liked in the Sears catalog, she would make her own pattern for it. She never taught me to sew, but my mother taught me when I was about 10. She bought me a treadle to learn on so I "wouldn't sew over my finger" she said. I'm now 73 and still sewing and quilting.

    Oh and Jen... not sure what you’re doing l, but you look so great in this video... thinner? New makeup? Hair?
    I’m not sure what it is but you look great and happy. Your hair was just right and I didn’t notice you having to tuck it behind your ears at all. I didn’t notice any bandages either. It’s tough to get that thin skin that bruises easy... I’m 52 and still haven’t gotten the thin skin, and no one believes I’m over 40... great genetics. Happy sewing

      Rebecca Conn
      I’ve never heard of the peppermint tea wash..... I’ll have to try it.
      My mom is 83 and looks younger than most 60 something year olds.
      But I did notice her skin getting thinner... but she’s healthy and doesn’t look her age.
      I learned all my sewing from hanging out in moms sewing room and sitting in the back of her classes, back when she taught. I need to brush up on my free motion machine embroidery... and especially the techniques of machine embroidery she taught me... my daughter is still impressed on the first appliqué I did while in one of my moms classes when I was 12, it’s a cow... of course back then hoops were always used as a frame, and it’s glued in.
      My mom was a certified teacher for the machine arts... she’s never owned an automated machine embroidery machine... it’s so tempting to get one... but a few years ago my sister was in a long visit with mom and brought her machine and the machine messed up in a almost done embroidery project that my sister needed to get sent off... my mom took the thread and saved the day.. mom put it under her machine and free motioned and filled in and fixed the project... mom has saved the day so many times... in 52, my first official project I was in second grade and made a knit hoodie... I’ve been sewing since... my mom just knows wow much and also has a huge variety of skills for the machine.
      I just wish sewing clothes was more cost effective... fabrics are just more expensive than they should be.
      One of my moms friend buys clothes by the bulk pound and make quilts from that fabric, she says it’s the only way she can afford the fabrics, and the fabrics are already proven to last.

    I'm not a fan of bias edges on the edges of my quilt so I would cut two smaller squares into two for my four corners and one giant square into four for my side setting triangles. I find the whole thing more stable then for adding borders. :-) When I'm assembling I start with one block and two setting triangles then three blocks and a triangle at each end working out from the corner to form the rows. My corners go on last. Interesting how we all have different methods of working.

    • @hrhdmk5845
      @hrhdmk5845 4 года назад +2

      I agree, Jobson Home. The way you describe the setting triangles method is the correct method for ensuring no stretching or distortion along the outer edges of the quilt top before sewing on the borders. But to ensure having enough background fabric, I would cut out the setting triangles first. I’m sure there are charts to be found on the internet for determining how large a square you’ll need in order to get the right size when you cut it diagonally both ways to get your side setting triangles. For those sewists following Jenny’s method, I *strongly* recommend starching the squares before cutting the setting triangles, to minimize unwanted stretching of the bias edges that will result. ~Diana K.
