Jukka's showmanship is one of the reasons I loved him as a drummer and miss him in Nightwish. No disrespect to Kai as he's a phenomenal drummer himself but I miss Jukka's style choices. FYI Jukka also stands whilst drumming at the end of Romanticide too! Stay safe 🤘 ✌

Hello David. Interesting reaction, I enjoyed it. This is an awesome song and performance by them, I totally agree with you. It was inspired by Tuomas Holopainen's favourite poet Walt Whitman and his famous poem of the same name. This is what Tuomas said about it: "I wanted to pay homage to him and do the lyrics in a way that he would possibly write. It's a real, open, thorough, personal catharsis - especially the spoken-word part." Talking about the spoken-word part, it's a six-minute recitation of a poem, which was not in this live performance, for obvious reasons. It's absolutely worth listening to though. It’s hard, it’s edgy, but it’s also beautiful. In my opinion, it really completes the song. If you want to listen to it, have a look at this video ruclips.net/video/RzxRHF50sMc/видео.html

    Hello David,
About the part Marko starting the verse and passing it to Floor - I believe it's a nod to the studio version, where Marko start like here and then Anette takes over, but mixing in album version is done so well I can never say where the passing occurs. Anette had obviously different tembre so maybe their voices blended even better. Why have they decided to do it like this on album? We can only guess but it sounds amazing to me.
Keep up the good work and stay healthy! Cheers

    • @pro-v7500

The audio engineering in the studio version has Marko’s “ohhhhhh” transition come in from a really quiet fade-in to very front and center in the mix. Not impossible to do live, but would seem out of place if the front of house sound guys created more fade than what he does naturally with his on vocals.
Marko did the same thing live that he did on the album for the this part, the only difference is in doing it live verse with minimal post-production vs doing in a studio with lots of post production. I don’t think Annette doubles with Marko, pretty sure he vocal doubles with himself on that transition.
As for the purpose of it: it’s a transition for the transition. After the chorus there is the short post-chorus where the main chorus music drops out and it’s just the dissonant keys and strings, Marko’s “ohhhhh” slide up is a way to transition into big sound that comes back in with the verse. Think of Marko’s slide as serving the purpose of a musical instrument, not as a vocal line connected to the verse that immediately follows with Anette/Floor’s vocals.

Love the baseball analogy. To build on that, haha, considering the song before this on the setlist was the grand slam (Ghost Love Score) a double is a great follow up. Something I love about this band is everyone plays in service to the music, the song comes first. As for Floor, she was born to do this and what I am always impressed with is that she doesn't over-embellish on her vocals. What she does fits the song and storytelling (not her ego or need to show off). And glad you keep bringing up Soilwork - Let This River Flow featuring Floor is one of my absolute favourite songs (and wearing pants she does a power stance with a foot on the monitor there, Marko however did that wearing a kilt in the Ayreon - Age of Shadows....)
The Mozart thing is more because of the universal recognition of the name Mozart, I think. Like Shakespeare, Einstein... it's just to avoid having to give an extra explanation given the declining levels of education these days. 'Wagner?, Chaucer? Feynman? Who?'

I'm a HUGE fan of Jukka and appreciate your recognition of his passion for performing.
I won't argue your Wagner comparison, but I think the Mozart comparison is more of a 'level of writing' and not style. On the same level as a Mozart...
I also agree with your score...9.4...
The showmanship at this event is absolutely top tier. The production, the performance and the engineering is next level.

they only stay in the half time feel in the live performances, because the studio version is about 7 minutes longer and completely changes after this part to a much softer and slower style. i highly recommend checking out the instrumental version of the song to truly understand what a genius composer Tuomas is. The last section makes me emotional every time and i'm sad it's never played live

Hello David, great reaction and review as always. As a Nightwish fan, I've been watching your reactions/reviews since "Ghost Love Score", as they come, and by this time, I was expecting a score of 93, so I'm very glad with this 94. As always you explain your reasons for your scores. I'm now giving some insights: This song, came just after "Ghost Love Scrore" in this show, so, for me, there was not a big drop down in quality. You must remember, that your "Stage General" was still a gest vocalyst and not an official band member, what happend only after this show, so it makes me more impressed with her performance.

Have always loved how Jukka occasionally stands, and plays, and reacts to and with the audience. Yes, a great song. Love the strong cadence and visual head banging/hair whip action. Marko marching across the stage, in time to the music during the breakdown. Even Emppu as he walks(marches) in time when he goes to the front of Jukka and his kit. This whole concert is like a great TV series you can watch again and again, because you see, hear, or feel something 'different' each time. At Wacken, Song of Myself was played immediately after Ghost Love Score. Which makes it # 14 of 15 songs played.
It is another that has sections. They are listed as:
    I- From a Dusty Bookshelf
II- All That Great Heart Lying Still
    III- Piano Black
    IV- Love
It is on the Imaginaerium album, which was written with Annette as lead singer. Every song at this show was written for either Tarja or Annette.
Always interested in the drummers, so Jukka's showmanship is something I noticed. The only other drummer I can think of offhand that does stand up and play to the crowd is AreJay Hale of Halestorm.

The Wagner comparison is first time I've heard it said but makes sense. My classical knowledge is relatively limited, but it makes sense to me that Tuomas would be most similar to a Romantic era composer of big melodic sound, compared to smaller classical sound or C.20th dissonance.

Thank you, David, thank you thank you thank you..Finally somebody that leaves the mold and doesn't just stick to what everybody's most familiar with...Everyone knows Mozart, and I understand he's favorite to most, but..the first time I heard the nick "Metal Mozart" I thought 'Why Mozart?' Why does it always have to be Mozart?..yes, Mozart was a very prolific composer, but if you want to compare Tuomas' musical METAL genius to a classical composer, you could go with so many others that actually could resemble what we all today know as symphonic metal...And you're right, David, I hadn't thought about Wagner, but he's definitely closer to what Tuomas does...I had also thought about some others..like Liszt, or Berlioz..or Bach..or Vivaldi..or Sibelius...
Rick Wakeman made a documentary where he actually described Antonio Vivaldi as arguably the original metal composer..It's an interesting documentary...Now, if it were for me to choose, to compare Tuomas with, I'd go with Jean Sibelius, with whom I feel more inclined to make the match because, after all, he's another fellow Finnish genius and..his inspiration probably developed around the same environment as Tuomas'...Wagner is alright.. 🙂..But my pick is Sibelius...In fact, that day I read the expression 'Metal Mozart' in a comment of one of these Nightwish videos, my first reaction was..'Why Mozart?..i would rather call him the Metal Sibelius'..Sounds more appropriate..🤘😎 ...just saying..

This intro is a very nice example of why I miss Jukka. With his way of playing and his sound he contributed so enormously to the storytelling, something I sometimes miss a bit with Kai. Don't misunderstand, I respect Kai for his precision, for his skills and I would never say anything bad about him. He is a machine. But my eyes and ears keep telling me that with Jukka an important part is gone.

Good point about the Metal Mozart. Granted, MM sounds good but he was quite "lighthearted" for me as a composer. Wagner, for me on the other hand, is a "heavy composer".

I guess I must be on the same page with you, as you said! There were two key features of this performance, both very simple, that caught my attention on first listen way back in 2013. The first one was the one you called out, Jukka standing and gesturing to the crowd with his sticks. And I have always said the very same thing as you, "showmanship!" I love Jukka (and miss him) more than anything else because of his showmanship. It isn't doing "crazy shit" just to show off how great he is. No, it is very simple things like the body language he throws into his work. /// The second thing that caught my attention and respect was the very ending: the four reprised lines from the Part 1 chorus; broken by silent pauses; the silence, in turn, broken by the precision-timed pyro burst; three times in a row. And then the last fools you by delaying the pyro burst with a perfect pregnant pause that makes you go, "Wait! What? ... OH, awesome!" /// On the Metal Mozart thing: True, the MM alliteration is a fun thing, but I would think the real reason is because the majority of a broadly distributed fanbase are not going to be well-versed experts in classical music. Though I think I agree with you about hearing more of a Wagner style (and I don't hear Mozart at all) I'll wager most people have zero familiarity with Wagner's music and probably have never even heard his name. But everyone has heard of Mozart. So I think it is more likely the term was created not to compare his style to any particular composer's style but rather to compare his style to the great classical composers in general by using a name everyone will recognize. The alliteration is just icing on the cake for making the term stick! :) Great reactions as always! Love your coverage and depth and commentary!

If I've understood correctly, Tuomas composes these songs but he doesn't do sheet music so there's no 8/4 nor 4/4 anywhere in the original designs. Pip Williams puts the notes on sheet music for the orchestra and tweaks the things to allow the orchestra to actually play it because sometimes Tuomas composes things with virtual instruments that the real orchestra cannot play.

Love the Wagner shout-out. I had already told my brother last month that if Wagner was writing today, I think it might sound a lot like NW. Doubt it? Listen to 'Descent into Nibelheim' from the von Karajan version with percussion hammering Tuned Anvils. ruclips.net/video/kqu30lUQhlE/видео.html Yep, That's some Heavy Metal, from the 19th century. Wagner was my 'gateway' into loving classical, branching out from LZep, PFloyd and Gabriel/Genesis.

Jukka's drumming style was a whole of body experience! He's a hard hitter, and really raises his arms to pound...takes so much energy! So fun to watch Jukka!
I hear some periphery Wagner...but also Bach, Mozart(presentation), Strauss, Zimmerman. Included w their Endless Forms Most Beautiful cd is an all.orchesral version of the album. I think you should reserve heavy Wagner til you hear this.
Why use Marko's vocal to start a phrase? IT'S MARKO...hearing him open singing is a treat! I highly recommend Tides, by Tarot, Marko's early solo band. The vocal will haunt you its so clean!
And he absolutely lunges like in stance...and barefoot! See live Kivia, from his newest project Pyre of the Black Heart...which is great in Finnish and English!
And as you'll read...I pay my respects to Ann W!

Recommend also listen album version of this song it is few minute longer(Singer was Anette). End is very poetic/poem and partly dedicated to band members family/closest friends. They also get "voice" in the end. Song is inspired Walt Whitman same name poem. Thomas says "wanted to pay homage to him and do the lyrics in a way that he would possibly write. It's a real, open, thorough, personal catharsis - especially the spoken-word part."

I always thought Tchaikovsky. But that's a personal opinion. Heh...wrote that before the end of the video. For this, this is a song that kinda grabs me. It pulls you along. I like the dark feel, the gothicness of it. And there are other parts on the album.....it is longer than they play live. But the lyrics are very much in the vein of Whitman, as the title suggests. Great song, great reaction!

  • @Thorgrim247
    @Thorgrim247 2 года назад +2

Is it 7/4 or is it 7/8? Is there a difference. I am counting 7 beats per measure. Or do you count 4/4 followed by a 3/4? Marko loves to crescendo into the opening line. Especially after a dramatic drop in intensity. He also does it in the live performance of "Amaranth".
You are correct. I think Wagner is more appropriate. He wrote much more dramatic style music. Obviously Wagner has a bad connotation, due to the Nazi association.
On the recording this song ends and goes straight into the epic 7 minute poem, inspire by Walt Whitman's poem of the same title.
I don't know if you saw the words on the screen at the songs ending? Being a musician, I have a question for you. On the screen where the final lines to the spoken poem on the studio version. I think it is a musical metaphor. It obviously is involved with relativity. I think I understand it? What do you think and how would you interpret the meaning?
    "And there forever remains
That change from G to E minor"

    • @athlonen
      @athlonen 2 года назад +1

You’re right here, as it is all about relativity. When you look at those particular keys, G major and E minor have the same notes on the scale, but a different root. Both keys only have 1 sharp (F#), but G starts the scale on G while E starts on E, making E the relative minor to G. So when you change keys from G major to E minor, the notes on the scale remain the same. Hence, “Remains the same from G to E minor.”

I think that Thomas Is the Mozart, and christofer Johnson (Therion)
From the point of View of the heavy sound of the music created by both composers (Wagner - johnson)
But both classical composers are genious, as the symphonic metal composers Tuomas-Johnson

Thank you again, Home Gnome! Thank you again, David! Will be back with thoughts/additions after I watch the review. EDIT: you caught all those nice details, David! I loved the theatrics a lot in their performance here. Absolutely fantastic! Everyone keeps giving their best. Might also be worth noting that this was right after Ghost Love Score. The song itself is a masterpiece IMO, with the composition and lyrics. It's an old time favorite for me, since Anette first sang it and Floor taking it a notch higher with her vocal range. And has sentimental value too. The theatrics from Floor in particular make this one fo the best performances from Wacken 2013 :D you might have missed it because you did not listen yet to their songs that are referenced here - in particular Storytime, Ghost River and Dead Boy's Poem.

Dude, ya were second guessing their structuring throughout the entirety of the song my man... LoL. Sometimes man, one must simply sit back & listen... and just simply surrender to the performer's guidance, wholly accepting all of the transporting emotional journey whilst & experience sonically every miniscule euphoric aspect of their enhanced chemistry elevating the piece of work unto a level wherein the overall well gelled collaborative performance becomes an utter masterpiece... Which is precisely what is being proffered by these amazing artists in this instance, specifically; & whom, after all, would be the ones most likely to know what it is that they are actually going for with how they have worked at carefully constructing, & practiced perfecting, the whole of the piece in question.
Hey, I get it man, sometimes a person simply doesn't happen to be in the right frame of mind to be entirety open & receptive to a given piece of music... It is just what being a human & experiencing all of life through the various emotional lenses all human beings feel at wildly differing moments throughout their existences... randomly altered by happenstance & the luck of chance timing.
Yet I would advocate for your deciding to give this song a few more listens that are experienced non-stop totally uninterrupted or over thought.... you likely shall come to appreciate this one far more than you already do I feel... c'mon man, what da ya have to lose in doing so?

I believe this song was written when Annette was the lead vocalist and she is pretty good but doesn’t have the vocal chops that Marko does. At this point in 2013 Floor was still a “fill in” vocalist and wasn’t a full band member yet. So Marko would be the one to hit a lot of the high power vocals.
