    We got 3x A7iii for like $3300, upgraded our lighting, upgraded our audio to 32 bit, got better glass. We now have more angles to shoot from and couldnt be happier.
    If you're doing photos, no reason to upgrade. The 24MP of the A7iii is fast when working in post. 8bit 420 is fine, if you're color grading a lot then go for the a7iv.
    We still shoot in 1080 60, 4K is a premium that clients dont want or notice the difference. Even other studios do not want 4K yet because of the high demand for resources and longer tines working in post..
    The ninja v is now like 399.
    Get it to overcome the recording limit.
    Thanks for the video and great points! Appreciate reasonably minded youtubers who do not hype everythi g up.
    Keep it up!

    😎 A7 IV is a no brainer choice for various reasons. However the A7R IV takes this up yet another notch. But the RAW files average 125megs each. The maximum ISO is a lot lower as well. If your into photographing the night sky, especially cloaked UFO’s at 50,000+ ISO, then the Sony A7 IV is the best choice in this price range. Just be sure to get a fast f2.8 lens. Focus mapping looks like a focus peaking in reverse mode on what you can see in the screen. In focus peaking the indicator color covers the focused subjects but in focus mapping you can clearly see the focused subjects without any overlays or colored indicators. It can be helpful if you want to see how clear those focused subjects are with the use of focus mapping contrary to focus peaking.

    Wait holdup- at 4:00 he says the color is unusable….what? What does he mean? Isn’t SlogIII the best picture profile to shoot with for maximum detail?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  Год назад +1

      Hello TRW, log profiles and resolution or detail are not correlated. Log profiles are about retaining dynamic range for exploiting later in the post production process. Log (historically called Cineon) was developed for at least a 10 bit signal. Log profiles, like all gamma encoding is simply a mathematical formula. When you have an 8 bit signal, you have to steal data from other areas in order to retain the dynamic range. There is not enough data to go around. It’s like building the frame to a two story house when you only have enough wood for one story. So you start looking around for all the end bits you might be able to use to frame up the 2nd story. The house is no longer stable.
      We see this when we look at log taken with 8 bit cameras. There is a lot of strange colours happening and you can’t fix it in post because the material just simply isn’t there. I think my example shows this well.
      The reason some people will say “it’s fine” is due to experience or taste. If you’re working and shooting every day with clients that expect an excellent image, shooting 8 bit log could very well get you fired, whereas as a recreational videographer who edits and grades their own work - they may not notice or care until they start to see the difference.
      Hope this helped clear up any questions.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  3 года назад

      I appreciate the point your making here. But take a moment to be in my shoes for a second. First off, no one human can know 100% of every camera system. If you’re expecting any reviewer to know that, then they are spending all of their time futzing with the most unimportant part of being an artist and a user. There are lots of things about my very own camera that I don’t understand because it’s not important and doesn’t progress my art in any way. It’s easy to be critical with words without empathy for real users who are focused on simply doing good work. Secondly, I stand by my comment because nearly every brand that includes this feature makes the change automatic. The fact that Sony makes it so contrived that I have to dive three fathoms into an inception style menu just to turn this silly feature off is laughable. I’m fine with the fact that you don’t agree with me - but don’t critique me that I haven’t done my homework. I’m out here in the real world busting my ass making a living as an artist and if something is poorly designed that gets between me and making good work, I’m going to point it out. Most people outside of trolls appreciate it.

      Sorry to hear that you had that problem. I had no OH issues with the model they lent me. Though, having an A7III and experiencing severe overheating problems - I can tell you that ambient temperature does play a role. If it's room or above room temp, the camera (A7III) will OH in video mode quite quickly. I never had the same problem with the A7IV, but I imagine that in a warm environment, and depending on what your frame rate is (higher resolutions and FR will cause more heat), you could run into issues. I just didn't have any with my tests. I would investigate to see if it's just an issue with your camera and maybe this is a service issue.

      Thank you! I haven't done a video on that specific topic. I did recently do a video about lenses for fashion (using sony lenses) but not specifically speaking to specific lens attributes. Choosing a set of lenses for your camera is really about what type of photography you shoot. There is no "this lens is the best of this camera" kind of thing. Choosing a lens is also about how much you can afford. Depending on what you're shooting, you may not see a difference between a $700 lens and a $3000 one.

      It can be situational, and based on a lot of factors - namely what you're shooting, and also what each person deems "suitable." I have attempted to grade or graded 8-bit log footage from nearly all cameras and the results are consistent. I have considerably high standards, especially in respect to skin tones. So, I could also correctly say that S-log2 on 8 bit is fine - but users will *always* get a better image, better skin tone, and better colours out of shooting a 709 hyper-gamma in 8 bit over log, and save themselves a whole tonne of work. But, to each their own, I suppose...

    Im not a Sony shooter - so let me get this right - are you saying if you switch from video to photo the profile in video automatically moves to photo. Surly you can set your photo profile - thats really dumb and the first time Ive heard this.

    I was originally thinking of going for a Canon Eos R6 M2 or similar until I heard about the lens options, now I am thinking of Sony A7IV but feel like I should cut the budget a little as I want more lens options so I am now comparing the A7iii and Nikon Z5. Anyone has advice on which one would be best for portraits, street and landscape photography? The video capabilities are a plus but not as necessary to me.

    A73's 4K30p is oversampled from 6K while the A74's 4K60p is oversampled from 7K, A74's 4K60p is oversampled from 4.8K so the 4K60p will not look as sharp as the 4K30p on the A74 althought its both 4K.

    I'm starting out with a $3000 budget. I was thinking about getting the A7iv new, but it limits me to getting a kit lens. My other option I'm looking at is getting a used a7iii with a sigma 24-70 lens or the sony f/4 70-200mm lens. In terms of camera and lens, I have a max budget of $2700. I plan on shooting primarily sports/events and Commercial work, thinking mainly photo and some video work. I'm not sure entirely though what route I'll be taking. What would you recommend? I'm open to any ideas or takes on my situation.

      I have the A7III, which I have used extensively for concert photography. While the A7IV is a desirable camera, I am not switching. People do not look at images or video from different cameras side-by-side, so comparisons are largely irrelevant.
      Myself, I want/need more lenses, not a new body. As they say, cameras come and go, but good glass will last forever.

      @么c r a n k A73 with the sigma 24-70 f2.8 i would suggest, as the kit lens is really not as good while the sigma has almost the same quality as the 24-70 f2.8 GM. A73 compaired to A74 is still not bad unless you have to use 4K60 10bit 422 or the higer megapixals or the flip out screen.

    I was really confused when you were talking about the picture profiles being the same in photo and video then I realized you're talking about shooting in jpeg

    • @vistek
      @vistek  2 года назад

      Even when shooting raw, you’re still looking at a picture profile and the picture profile you choose actually affects your raw encoding on the post side (Gerald Undone did a great video about this). So your PP at the very least will effect how you see your image in your camera. At worst, even when only shooting raw, will have some effect on your final image in computer.

    • @GatehiMwaniki
      @GatehiMwaniki 2 года назад

      @@vistek Then just have separate settings for photo and video. That's what I do. Whenever I go from video to photo it goes from slog3 to picture profile off. I never even considered this a problem 😅

    i'm struggling ... i'm divided by the fact that the A7III is still a beast and the price is realllllly attractive ... but the A7IV just feel like the better option even tho just the camera alone is almost the same price as the A7III with a lens ...
    here is the thing, i'm looking to upgrade from my Canon 750D and start my business, the smart choice should be the A7IV technically right ? i'm kinda lost since pretty much everything is an insane upgrade to my 750D ... any help ?
    Also i almost forgot but i do not plan on shooting videos, at least not for the moment so yeah that also goes into consideration. My requirement for my upgrade is actually fairly simple:
    Full frame, Double SD slot that can be written on at the same time (back up is important) and good auto focus, the rest is a bonus

    The new touchscreen menu system is a huge incentive to buy the the 2300€ A7iv instead of the 1550€ A7iii, worth 300-400€ for me. Higher def sensor, better AF, ergonomic, 4K video format, etc... does the rest.

    I have to agree that screen on the A7III is the worst part of the body but as a hobbyist photographer everything else is good enough for me with the A7III even 5 years later. The upgrades to AF, minor ergo changes & slight res bump isn't worth 3200 CAD.

    For sports will I be not better off with a7iii and if am into wedding and portraits will I be not better off with a7r4… am a bit confused about its positioning… rather Sony itself is I think… if they wanted to genuinely upgrade, they should have kept the fps at 10 in uncompressed Raw… they didn’t want to kill the golden goose.
