      I don't think I've seen a break down on Pharrell skills and tips. Another I haven't seen almost anywhere is one on MF DOOM. Everyone points out his lyrical abilities but not many are knowledgeable of the many fascinating beats he's made in his time living

    Small tip... Alch samples often with the turntable pitch at -8 or +8, not sure what exact tuning effect it has on the samples but the outcome is most likely out of tune which combined with anything played over it like a bass line (actually tuned correctly) will result in a bit of dissonance, which in this style of creepy beats is desirable. This also makes it hard to play too much melodic stuff over the samples which explains why he tends add the complexity the way shown here.

      hes inspired you to make lazy shit for people who listen to music on headphones/tiny blue tooth speakers. as a lover of bass with a 12" sub in my home and in my car, it sucks listening to rap music that has no knock. sounds castrated.

    Listening to Tyler, the Creator made me want to start rapping, Nas made me want to start rapping WELL. In the same light, Ye made me want to start producing, Alchemist made me want to start producing WELL. It’s important to study the greats, as their work is packed with precision and details that most won’t notice but will still appreciate subconsciously. Great breakdown.

    Alchemist has stayed relevant because he never took his foot off the gass and had seeked out great artists to work with that suit his production style

    He gets creative with sound and that’s not something many artists or makers like to do once they “make it”. Many artists will rinse and repeat the same formula that got them successful until they’re just a former shell of themselves and they get tossed aside for the next producer. Alchemist tends to keep evolving and finding something new and that’s why he’s still relevant and wanted in Hip Hop. I don’t know the guy but I’m very proud of his career.

    One thing i think is incredibly important in this kind of hip hop (boom bap, lofi, half time, west coast/La beats) is SPACING giving all your elements a space to breathe and cutting the tails off your sounds can really help add drive and groove to your beat; especially if you have stuff that’s off grid.

    Man you explain everything so simply, for those that are just starting I recommend listening to any type beats with earphones or your pref, you'll be amazed how you'll get the hang of listening to different layers in that bear and learning their patterns and techniques :)

    i really like trapchemist like willie lloyd, 5 to 50, bernadines where he uses those boom bap sounds with trap patterns i think a full tutorial on songs like those would be fire

    This video makes me want to use some trap percussion in a boom bap context. I hope you can tip me on how to use a trap snare in a boombap context. Otherwise, this is a pretty great video.

      Typically, trap snares have a lot of brightness to them so reducing how bright they are can help you fit a boom bap aesthetic

      I watched a vid where Mike says he just performs using white keys and transposes when he wants song to be in another key.

      @@eberg7982 damn that's smart. i know that some keyboards / synths have a function where you can set it to play in any particular key and it will automatically transpose in real time. i feel like mike dean wouldn't need that but it could be useful
