  • A horse packing trip on the Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail, about 75 miles long and oriented north to south which follows the crest of the Wyoming Range Mountains. The trail is more of a route than a trail which starts at the north end near Hoback Junction just south of Jackson Hole Wyoming. Continues south 75 miles south to Snider Basin near Big Piney Wyoming. The trail is located in a primitive area of the Bridger Teton National Forest more wild than most wilderness areas in the west.
I decided to ride horse back about 50 miles starting at the north end and head south to McDougal Pass. I was riding alone with one pack horse. I started out on a good day in September with great hopes of finishing the trip in 4 to 5 days. But I didn't know that those plans would change when I encountered a massive landslide.

My old stomping grounds! Great video, thanks for posting. I have ridden and walked all over the Wyoming Range, even saw a grizzly there in the 80's at about 20 feet.

Great video Roger. That's my old Elk hunting ground. I wish I could have been with you.
You can go up Hunter creek to Horse Paradise and, past the head of Cliff Creek and the west side of Hoback peak to Roosevelt.
Hunter Creek trail splits off east past where that rock cliff narrow was. It's opposite Mumford Creek. I'll give you a call.

Thanks for another great video Roger. That's too bad about that mudslide. I'm surprised with it being September that there hadn't been any outfitters or any regular trail users that had cleared a trail around or through that yet. I know I have come across a few of those slides and have had to work really hard to get through them. I don't know what my schedule looks like in the fall yet, but if you need someone to ride with I would be interested in riding this trail with you. Happy trails. Josh Taylor.
