Chimpunk soul samples with conscious lyrics, emo/melodic rap with autotune and rapper/producer combo (although that already existed I think he elevated it even more). Also want to add he kinda brought industrial hip hop to mainstream and influenced fashion couple of times as well.

Honestly producin means whole different thing in hip-hop vs other contexts, hip-hop you're composing the backbone of the song, in rock often times you're fiddling knobs and adjusting levels to make sure everything sounds good and throw in ideas here and there, unless you're an absolute genius like George Martin etc. My top 5 are prolly Kanye, Quincy Jones, George Martin, Teo Macero, and J Dilla.

Whoever this guy at the station is, he really did not do his homework. The basement came in mid 90's to late 90's. Pharrell already was working with Teddy Riley in the early 90's. He even wrote Teddy Riley's verse on Rump Shaker by Wreckx-N- Effect. Pharrell came up under Teddy Riley and not Timbaland!
