If you can hear it, you can play it: Lili Haydn at TEDxOlympicBlvdWomen

  • Rolling Stone called her music "fiery and virtuosic..." George Clinton called her "the Jimi Hendrix of the violin."
Lili Haydn has released four critically acclaimed major label recordings as a solo artist, appeared on numerous TV shows, including the Tonight Show and the HBO hit Californication, toured the world, and collaborated with legendary artists such as Herbie Hancock, Sting, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, the LA Philharmonic, and George Clinton, to name a few. In addition to Lili's extensive recording and touring career, Lili's music has been licensed for TV, film, and commercials. In 2009, Lili began scoring films, earning a fellowship to the Sundance Film Institute Composer's Program, and has ten feature films/documentaries to her credit, including Zeitgeist: Moving Forward, (2011), Somewhere Between (2012) The Sublime and Beautiful (2013) and ANITA by Academy Award winner Freida Lee Mock (2014). Lili will release her 5th studio record, LiliLand in 2014.
In her TEDxOlympicBlvdWomen performance, Haydn performs, and explains how her view of life and activism grew from the seed of her mother's advice to her as a child learning to play the violin: "If you can hear it, You can play it! If you can imagine it, you can create it!"
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

What a wise mother she had! I sure wish I never quit playing the violin after a short 4 years! Can I imagine picking it up again at 55?

Yes you can all you have to do is hear it with your heart and play it with your heart I am a musician who has just started out again on the keyboard after over 40 years away from the piano I hated it as a child but now I love it and understand the octave differences which makes music so much more enjoyable. So you are never to old I am planning on taking up the violin next myself because I figure it will not be that hard to learn as I have been bitten by the sound of the violin in June this year and I have promised myself that I will teach myself to play the violin.

Tracy Monteforte I’ve just seen your post in September 2019 and I must say even at 59 why not pick it up again? I am 67 and started playing guitar at about 14! Never had the ego to be great nor the patience to learn more! But I still play just for the pleasure of playing!

Weird confession that led me here: I've been inexplicably in love with this woman since I saw her for 30 seconds in Not Quite Human. I watched a "Where Are They Now?" video and I can't believe how talented she is, how incredibly far she has come, and everything she's done and overcome through the years. I'm truly impressed... And still in love, obviously

Never be hurt and never be sorrow by showing your simplicity and to give your heart to beloved ones because the more you love there must be a chance to become more you hurt so be careful and get rid of out of this problem you need have to become more stronger to accept the challenges of love it happens once only in your life time and showed you the feelings of love and the heart never hears anyones when it was happened and till your death it always feels you sometimes right or sometimes wrong only confusing so never be late to set up your mind to the area of a positivity and enjoy ur life

If you tell yourself it's too hard or even impossible, you're doomed from the start. It really is true, if you can hear it, you CAN play it. There are only so many notes. Transposing is a skill like reading or writing or even speaking. Anyone can do it given they are willing to put in the time and work.

You can learn anything you want, it's just a matter of how long it would take to practice it and get it up to speed. How long it takes for you to learn something is directly proportional to your level of technique. For example before I went to music school, with my self-taught technique it would take me over half a year of slow & steady practicing to perfect just one movement Bach lute suite. After my first year, that number dropped to 3 months. It would have kept going like that but I to stop playing due to a very bad RSI. oh well ¯_(ツ)_/¯
