Greetings and welcome to the bottom of the description. I'm Alax, more legally known as Alex Carducci. I make design analysis videos on fictional stuff I really like. Most of this time this centralizes on video games I love like Super Smash Bros., Super Mario, Persona, or Sonic the Hedgehog. I studied design and communications, so I find it fascinating how technology and culture shapes the media in our lives and how we perceive it. My channel aims to look into the history and development of these topics in depth so we can all find the truth as to why things are made the way they are. Also, there's a talking cat.

That threw me off too. I guess the rings are harder to find in the other levels but they definitely exist.

They're ridiculously hard to find after mushroom hill, and they're only in the first four zones of SnK. Flying Battery literally makes you push over spikes to find any, something that is never done or hinted at in any other point in the series, and the one accessible to sonic in sandopolis act 2 is in the middle of a point of no return.
@@Eggscramblercomms Pushing spikes? I found both of the rings in Act 1 without needing to any of that - I didn't even know that you _could_ push the spikes. For the first one, just stick to the low path and use Tails or get an electric shield. The second one is even easier, just fall to the bottom of the big vertical tube with the capsules and go to the left. The one accessible to Sonic in Act 2 is absolutely trivial to find as it's on the compulsory route right at the end.
If anything, the game encourages you to find them across all of the zones (omitting Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary and Death Egg) because the game actually removes some of the rings from Mushroom Hill when it's part of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Probably already knew this but Fun Fact:
In the original Sonic 3 (the one that was gonna come w/ the & Knuckles portion) between Carnival Night and Ice Cap was Flying Battery. You'd be launched into the airship through the cannon and then when landing in Ice Cap, you'd be snowboarding off the door you kick off. So the transition made 10% more sense.

I agree there are more good sonic games than bad especially if you consider 3d AND 2d ones. But nope sonic bad lol.

Sonic fanboy take incoming but there's only three to five really bad Sonic games those games being Sonic 06, Unleashed, Forces, and Shadow but even then some don't even agree about Unleashed and Shadow being that bad. Secert Rings and Black Knight are just shitty Wii games lots of series had shitty Wii games but I don't see Zelda videos still bring up Link's Crossbow Training. I feel as if the Internet has overblown the hate this series gets from the games, the characters, and hell even the fanbase because every fanbase is shit. All I have to say to wrap this up is that have you ever noticed whenever someone brings up Sonic's rough transistion post Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it's always the same games I keep mentioning with the occasional "Big the Cat" or "Sonic kissed a women 14 years ago."

Sega did a good job with the advertising to sell the idea of Sonic being fast, in an effort to differentiate both their mascot and their hardware from Nintendo, but the game was already under development as this was being figured out. They were very much riffing on Mario, which has similar kinds of stop-and-start obstacles, and didn't have time to fully apply the high concept they settled on until the sequel.
Plus, speed is a reward for skill.
@@cullbear55 Pretty much this. Sonic is a game you are supposed to go back and play and improve you're time by learning routes and maximizing speed.
@@CometX-ing I always found that logic on why sonic games are good to be dumb. That's true for literally every game, if it wasn't people wouldn't care so much about speed running. Let's look back at Mario which supposedly has stop and go level design, how many times do you see a 2D mario speed runner actually stop. It's why people hate the auto scroll levels they introduced in 3, because Mario also rewarfed speed for learning the level. You can even speed through a Bubsy level if you play through it enough times, does that mean Bubsy secretly has good level design =b
I’m pretty sure the concept of Sonic going fast was the idea since literally the beginning. Naka’s main inspiration for Sonic was playing through the first level in super Mario bros as fast he can.

I personally will always prefer the adventure games, the advance games, and heroes over the classic games. That just what I grew up with, and while yeah, they have their problems, they offer so much in terms of gameplay and style. The advance games introduced me to my favorite character in the series, Cream and Cheese, and Sonic Heroes brought in my second favorite, being E-123 Omega.
But even though I prefer those games over the classics, I will never deny how much the classic games did so well, and I will always hold a high level of respect for them. Sonic mania is the best thing to come out of sonic this entire decade. I LOVE every inch of mania.
With that said, I really hope sonic team decides to push the series forward in terms of the 3d department, because 3D hasn’t been too great lately. Forced 2D sections, no playable characters besides sonic, shotty level design, the tone has been dumbed down, just moving in a circle feels bad. I’d love for the series to retry the adventure formula and figure out what made them fun, as well as what made us love the characters and world of Sonic. April 20th is only so far away, we’ll find out what the future has in store for us soon enough. Sonic the hedgehog is my favorite video game series of all time. The music, the fun wide variety of characters, the speedy gameplay, the beautiful creative scenery, I love sonic so so much, but it feels like the series has been pandering to outsiders rather than genuine fans like me, so I really hope they find a permanent fix for the series that satisfies the fans that were there through thick and thin.

First two minutes into the video, I just have to say this: I'm honestly so sick of youtubers saying that after the original trilogy that sonic became "crap." There's plenty of games after the original trilogy that are great, just because its different and not the same and just because there are a handful of bad games doesnt make all of them bad.

Hot take: Not every game past Sonic 3&K is bad, and I'm not just talking about Mania either.
While there are really bad Sonic games like Sonic 06 and the worst Sonic game of all time Rise of Lyric; or at the least big name disappointments like Forces, there are some genuinely fun ones like Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2 (especially SA2 Battle), Colors, Generations, and the day time sections in Unleashed.
Not to mention the first Advance feels like a more proper Sonic 4 than Sonic 4 itself (it helps Advance was made back when Dimps knew how to make proper Sonic games).

I do understand the problems people have with cd... But I really wish people appreciated some aspects it did really well. It's music is typically a standard for music quality and is really good. The presentation too is very good in moments like the metal sonic race. I feel that's where the creative side of sonic was born creating a lot of very weird and unique level visuals

& Knuckles
Sonic CD and 3 & Knuckles are my favorites
Id say from worst to best:
Sonic 1 and 3 tie,
Sonic 2,
Then Sonic CD.

Anyone else tired for the "Everything after Sonic & Knuckles is crap" argument? Alex even contradicted himself, considering how he even made a video on Sonic Adventure 2 being the best 3D Sonic. And let's not forget about the Sonic Advance series either, the Rush series, Generations, Colors, and (arguably) Unleashed.
Yeah, it's kind of annoying how so many people believe that because of a few sour games. As for Unleashed, the day stages are genuinely fantastic and the night stages aren't as bad as people say they are, they just aren't very Sonic-y.

Wait, are you saying the Super Emeralds can ONLY be obtained in Mushroom Hill? If that IS what you're saying, that is just not true. You can find special rings in every zone, and as long as you find all 7 Chaos Emeralds before Mushroom Hill, the giant rings from that point on will lead to the Super Emeralds.

This was a great video! These are some of my favorite games of all time, great to hear your opinions on them!
I have to say though, I'm a bit confused about what you said at 28:27... What are you talking about?? There are plenty of Giant Rings in Flying Battery, Sandopolis, and Lava Reef. It's only from Hidden Palace onwards that there are no Giant Rings to find, but until then you have plenty of opportunities to get the Super Emeralds! Hopefully that makes the game a bit more fun for you haha
I'm really curious to see what his beef with Sonic CD is. I just recently played it and had a blast. I definitely consider it better than Sonic 1 and 2. To me the levels all seem to follow the good Sonic level design criteria Alax presented in this video. (That is if you're playing with the Japanese soundtrack)
Well, it kind of depends on what type of playthrough you do on sonic cd.
I 100% Sonic 2 and felt hurt by his description of the emerald hunting. Granted, I did it on the remastered mobile version. But it was quite satisfying for me to get all seven emeralds in Emerald Hill alone.
if you felt hurt, it's probably because, like you said, you played it on the remastered mobile version, which makes the special stages WAY more fair and forgiving. play the original special stages on the genesis and you will see what he's talking about.

You can save in mega collection. Press z in any game to access a menu that lets you basically make save states. It's actually really convenient!

I'm a huge sonic fan. I've only played a few games, but I can confidently say I much prefer the 2D, 16 bit sonic to anything else. I haven't played sonic and knuckles yet, but grew up playing 1, 2, and 3 and love them (especially 2). I've recently picked up sonic mania as well, and it has the same feel to it as those

24:04 in fairness, it was originally supposed to be Carnival Night -> Flying Battery -> IceCap, which is a little more cohesive. If there was no need to split the games in half, the progression here might have felt less like they "dropped the ball".

How could Sonic CD learn from the previous games if it only came out after Sonic 1 but before Sonic 2?

I think sonic 3&K took to much from 2. Even the final boss and a robot sonic return if anything CD is unique in its level design and story and has the best robo sonic before sonic 2 did.
I'm glad sonic CD didn't base itself so heavily on 2 like 3&K did and went to do it's own thing.

Fun fact: Originally, Flying Battery would appear in Sonic 3, in between Carnival Night and Ice Cap. Due to time, I guess, it was removed from 3 and put in Knuckles. This is why the transition from CN to IC is strange.

Holy cow, that OCD bit got to me! Hilarious! I thought I was the only one that hopped on the crumbling tiles from one side to the other.
In Sonic 2, collect all the Chaos Emeralds and beat the game. If you don't turn the console off and start a new game after the credits end, you will have all of the Chaos Emeralds still collected. Meaning: you're able to use Super Sonic through your whole second playthrough.

2:53 this part is very easy to me, i can clear it with closed eyes.
The entire extras menu for SMC was such a trip, the music made me feel nostalgic for an era I never experienced. The art and the comics made me feel a bit of that era, like how is it possible to feel hand-me-down nostalgia just because of the Extra's menu song, aptly named History. My only real memory of sonic at the time was Sonic Underground with SA2 and SMC were my introduction to these games. Somehow the SMC gives me both nostalgia for the era I never lived while at the same time making me remember the good times on gamecube.
All I'm saying is bitches better add the Extras menu song to spotify
SERIOUSLY. For me, someone that did grow up with Genesis Sonic, that Extras menu song gives me chills and if I hang around and check out the History section for too long I start to tear up. I dunno why but one of the first childhood memories I always flash back to is a day I was sick in bed & when my dad came home that afternoon, he brought me a VHS tape of the Sonic OVA with a package of blue Sno-balls. A replacement for my original Genesis 2 was the very first thing I bought when I received my first ever paycheck, too.

There are plenty of Giant Rings in Flying Battery, Sandopolis, and Lava Reef. They're just much better hidden than Mushroom Hill.

I played all 4 classic sonic games for the first time recently and easily cd is the best. Sonic 2 coming close.

@@flyforce16 If you want more of games like Sonic CD, I would recommend 8 Bit Sonic 2, which was largely based off of the JP sequel to Sonic 1 with some elements of the US, actual, Sonic 2
No offense but CD was kind of meh to me because of the zones and mechanics.

I'll always have a very soft spot for Sonic, 2 being the very first game I ever played even going so far as being the earliest memory I can recall. Between Sonic 1 and 2 plus Golden Axe and Altered Beast, Sega really had my heart my whole life.

lmao no you're just bad. Mushroom hill has the most, but there are a few in Flying Battery and Sandopolis, and a good few in Lava Reef. And by the end of Lava Reef, you probably have all the emeralds.

You can actually go fairly fast in plenty of sections in marble zone. For instance, you can jump between platforms in most of the moving platform in lava sections.

I'm loving this, personally. I've seen RUclipsrs talk about the Dreamcast-era and later games hundreds of times over the years, but rarely do I see them really get into the Genesis games. They've been making me want to pick up one of my copies but I don't have any controllers with a decent D-Pad right now :c
Well we can say one thing:
No matter what the rankings say, these games are better than most modern Sonic games.
Well I wouldn’t say the whole trilogy is better than most Modern Sonic games but Sonic 3 is better than most of the modern ones.
Im not counting spinoffs like Rise of Lyric or Freeriders or Shadow the hedgehog

@@mrfox5117 i just think it's extremely linear. it doesn't do anything new or interesting besides crippling yet another format that worked and breaking it down to it's "core" in an attempt to innovate. it's just a really dumb mediocre game. i dont think it's horrible, but i wouldn't put it on the same list as any of the games you mentioned
@@ohmadda7038 Well everything you mentioned doesnt make it necessarily a bad game. Looking at the game without the "not the same as before" lens, it is fine. I do think that it is of lower quality than most games on this list, but I also think it is heavily underrated and most people bypass it as bad because it wasn't the best choice for Sonic team to make.

When i was in elementry school, my class mate said that in Sonic 3 i could stop knuckles and keep the emeralds the entire game

The music is beautiful.
The level design is the best in the series.

My favorite stage being ice cap zone and death egg zone.
Its an amazing game and if you haven't played it then plAy it now.
