The trainer is going way out of his expertise. Last semester in my Physiology of exercise class our professor gave all the students who wanted to be personal trainers an important message, Do NOT get into nutrition problems with your clients! That is not your job, that's when you direct them to a Dietitian!... I loved that professor and that's exactly what is happening here. Her trainer is not being responsible. So glad you made this video Abbey!

Trigger warning! Discussion of weight loss, and my relative using the dry method
My dad was a body builder before I was born. I didn’t know it was called, ‘dry,’ but he attributes it to his many permanent physical disabilities. He would talk about nearly starving before a competition and then hydrating at the last second to make those ‘veins pop for the judging.’ How terrifying that they were so dehydrated to begin with. He discussed that the starvation technique they’d use would make their skin ‘paper thin to enhance the outline of each muscle group.’ Scuse me?
He eventually got out of those competitions and stopped body building all together. Lifting to that extreme was a bad idea, but lifting under the conditions he put on his body caused permanent damage to many areas in his body.
Please please please save your body and do not follow that method!

    • @bunkertons
      @bunkertons 4 года назад +15

@steph: I also enjoy powerlifting. It sounds like you have a very positive view on it. Best of luck! Keep taking care of that body. My dad would remind you that it’s the only body you have, so love it
@Marah he has Various detached muscles in the shoulder, slipped/bulging discs, knee replacement, just to name a few. He’s struggled with his metabolism ever since as well. Both he and I will acknowledge that bodybuilding the way he did played a part in his body’s condition, but crash-dieting to show off the hard work more likely led to poor form, poor recovery, and an increased risk of muscle and joint damage.

The Ketogenic diet really helped me with my epilepsy. After having 4-6 seizures at a time (I almost wasn't able to finish high school and felt very sick my first semster of college), to not having a seizure in over a year and 7 months. My brainpower and focus also improved significantly. But now, I mainly just stick to healthy sources of protein, fat, and carbs, rather than going back to the Keto diet or the low-nutritional value diet I was eating before, which consisted of a lot of processed foods. I think my biggest issue with RUclipsrs publishing WIEIAD videos and diet/meal videos is they rarely talk about getting help from a doctor or RD. It's also annoying that whenever they get criticism for sharing incorrect/non-evidence-based information they'll say things like, well I'm not telling YOU to eat this way. Like? You're still an influencer! You know someone is going to copy you because you have a body type that is generally sought after. I'm particularly annoyed by this one because just because someone is trained in one field does not mean they're educated in another (in regards to her fitness trainer). I rolled my eyes so hard at the end of her video where (presumably) her trainer said they were going to share this data with her doctor. That should have been the first step! Not an afterthought.
TL;DR people need to seek help with licensed professionals in the field before they post and take accountability for sharing harmful content.

I had a big problem with Sanne defending these videos for this exact reason! There were tons and tons of people in her comments gently explaining to her that the video was triggering, not science-based, that there were tons of red flags in it, and that she would be causing other people to try this highly restrictive diet. She kept just responding that she was not telling other people to do it, she was just sharing her own story. I really wish she would have at least acknowledged the feedback instead of writing it off. It sounds like she must have finally heard the feedback though if she removed the videos

I did Keto for 3 months, mainly so I could have my own experiences before I educated others on it - and it did reduce inflammation and fogginess in my head quite a bit. It was too restrictive and there’s no long term studies on certain health risks but it did work pretty well. I wouldn’t tell any of my clients that it’ll work “guaranteed” though. That’s a little risky because we are all different and there are many approaches you could take to get similar results.

Growing up, I would just eat whatever my parents made and never worry about eating too much or too little, the same was with my friends and nobody ever experienced any digestive problems or anything to even think about changing their diets. I had never heard of the “bloating problem” before I discovered American fitness and nutrition RUclips. Honestly I think it’s a really American thing. Of course I noticed a bit of expanding and deflating of my stomach from time to time in a day (long time vegetarian and now vegan, so relatively high fiber), but I never felt the need to give it a name or to even get rid of for aesthetic reasons, nor to seek for the root of “it” because it is and has been such a normal thing to me, that a human body does “this”, as to “sometimes being flat, sometimes don’t”, that I never gave any attention to that. For context: living in Germany, grew up with a normal German diet but way less meat than normal, vegetarian since I was 10yo. I simply always ate what was there ^^

I always learn so much through mine and also get to explore some ways that specific foods effect me. I have certain foods that seem to trigger a longer lasting blood sugar spike and exploring these under the direction of a professional has changed my life AND my HbA1c.

You are great for wanting to find the best way to help your bf! I definitely agree with Tiffany X's suggestion regarding talking to his Diabetes Maintenance Team. Also, as a mom of a T1 (my son was dx 12 yrs ago) no food is exactly "off limits". From the beginning, his docs said he could eat what we eat as long as he manages his insulin doses correctly. Heck - he's even had candy at the movies. :-) BUT, like all of us, certain foods are definitely better. We aim for the combo of protein, carb, fat since it tends to slow down the breakdown of carbs (like Abbey said in this video). Also, everyone is different (T1 or not) and certain foods affect him differently than they affect others even when they are "the same" in relation to carbs, etc. His kryptonite is pizza. It always throws us a curve ball when he eats it and we have tried numerous ways to handle it. All this to say, encourage him to eat healthy and nothing (especially favorites) should be always off limits. I truly believe each T1's road is different and very individual.

I do understand that fitness influencers restrict too much to at a certain way end up pushing misinformation to the audiência regardless their diets, but who are you to blame fitness influencers are pressured to look at a certain way if they dont look the same way, its like they are failing doing their jobs (looking at a certain way).

there is actually a lot of research about keto diet (KD) and reducing inflammation. Im not a fan of the KD, but I recently did an independent study on reducing neural inflammation for epilepsy and depression through the KD. It seems as though some individuals who do not respond to the currently available pharmaceutical options do improve in epileptic symptoms while on the KD. In fact, the KD was originally designed for children with epilepsy. So there is a ton of research out there for anyone interested about the anti-inflammatory effects of the KD both at the neural and more physical level. It is a bit of a mess......but I would say it certainly is empirically supported.

Love this comment and would like to see a video on the topic. For me it’s almost the same as “anxiety” being thrown around nowadays. Many people use both words to describe their own body’s reactions, but is it true inflammation? Anxiety? Or self-diagnosed. As someone with ulcerative colitis who has actual gut inflammation, needing colonoscopies or ct scans to show said inflammation, I’m wondering how so many of these health and fitness gurus can make all these claims against inflammation but without even knowing if they have any true inflammation at all.

That would be awesome, but also I suffer from more than one chronic illness, and they all seem to cause inflammation in different parts of my body. It would be great to control with diet, because many of the anti-inflammatory medications come with some pretty intense side effects that make one seriously have to think about the benefit to health vs affected quality of life from side effects issue. I think many of us would love to find a balance of foods that cures this inflammation so we could take less meds, but I also don't think that's possible, or someone would have figured it out already. I hope that makes sense, having chronic illnesses, I'm always told to try this diet or this vitamin, and it never seems like the answer is actually that easy.

This video was AMAZING! I've gotten lured into so many of these restrictive diets with the empty promises of "no more bloat" and being "headache free" - hoping to find relief from some chronic stomach pain. I've found, after so so so many years of confusion and pain, that a lot of my discomfort had to do with unhealed trauma and the chronic stress that came with it. I only post this to share my experience in case there are other precious people out there who may have the same story. A wonderful therapist, good friends, healthy sleep, sane amounts of exercise, and registered dietitians like Abbey have begun to help me heal from a discomfort that - for me - was mostly caused by a stressful and unfulfilling lifestyle and childhood. Ultimately, I don't think we get to live a pain free life (a delusion that I think a lot of alternative healers prey upon) but I do think we can heal a lot of what's causing the pain.

I think if an influencer gives a disclaimer, that is enough. We should not only be allowed to do something and post it for an audience if there are scientific studies saying we should. Even if we wanted to do that, there are lots of conflicting studies out there. We should do what feels best for us and not feel the need to back it up with studies to be able to do so. We need to take responsibility for ourselves as consumers of this content and not just do something because we see someone online doing it.

It’s not bad! Different peoples bodies react to food differently - low carb diets can help people with certain health issues - hormone issues, diabetes or insulin resistance, but you don’t need to avoid carbs if you are doing perfectly well eating them. Low-carb is just the trendy diet at the moment, before low carb, it was low fat. When you see the various diets, remember that every person is different - no stranger can tell you what you should eat. If you are healthy and happy as you are, then you are doing fine with your diet!

    Another vid, another comment.
I half agree that the trainer may have been out of their depth in giving nutritional recommendations, and perhaps they should have said to go to a dietitian or nutritionist for a thorough plan if they, as a trainer, weren't qualified to give such advice.
I also agree that the trainers advice for a 2 week keto elim diet before slow reintroduction of ordinary foods was perhaps not the best idea, and that testing blood sugar was a dumb way to determine inflammation. However, that's all I'm on board for.
The diet keto elim should have lasted maybe 4-6 weeks since that's about when the body gets somewhat used to the diet, and from there they should have begun to test adding different low carb keto friendly foods for a time to see if any were causing problems, then add in higher fiber low carb foods to see if fiber or certain foods with fiber were the problem, then add higher carb/protein foods to see if carbs/protein or foods with those things were the problem.
Also, as usual Abbey uses studies to craft an anti-keto narrative. She says there's evidence that keto can help with inflammation, but says that reduced inflammation may be caused by the supposedly necessary elimination of fiber and other fermentatable carbs on a ketogenic diet, but also essentially says that fiber is good for the digestive tract and that it's reduction may cause problems that require elimination diets in the first place. First of all, that's a clever catch .22; if keto elimination diet works, it's possibly cuz there's no fiber, but it could also fail because there's no fiber, either way avoid keto. Second, I guess she's never heard of pecans, or filberts, or other high fat, high fiber, low carb plant foods that people on keto can eat as a fiber source, but it wouldn't fit her narrative I guess.
she cites a study at 11:06 to back up her statement that keto could worsen inflammation and gut bacterial populations, but that study means nothing. It had people eating 40% fat at most, and compared them to groups eating 20% and 30% fat. 40% is not high fat or keto because keto people usually eat at least around 70% fat, so that study means nothing for keto eaters.
Even assuming that the gut bacterial diversity of keto people does take a hit as the study claims, considering that people still tend to get IBD/IBS relief on keto, among other benefits, is the decreased gut diversity really an issue after that? Maybe the other bacterial types that disappear are less necessary for biological functions on keto? Just spitballing tbh, but still, the decrease in gut flora diversity comes alongside all the other typical benefits of keto like decreased inflammation, decreased insulin resistance, decreased bloating, etc. Would it be a big problem for keto that gut flora diminishes if these other health benefits also come with the package?
She says at 11:58 that there's "some" evidence keto can help with inflammation, but she says that it examined people with diabetes and not the general population so that doesn't count. At this point I know she's cherry-picking, because I found a study that saw decreased inflammation and increased insulin sensitivity in *nonobese* subjects. And yes, it was an RCT. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4586572/
Abbey then spends 12:38 to about 12:50 or so talking about how some people think nightshade is inflammatory, but that it's not according to an arthritis org., and she talks about how a certain potato that's rich in antioxidants helped reign in arthritis symptoms. This isn't pro-nightshade, pro-potatoes, or pro carbs as much as it is pro antioxidants/noninflammatory foods. Antioxidants in diet seem to be pretty good in bringing down inflammation levels, and of course oxidation levels, in people's bodies. Guess what's also been found to bring down inflammation and oxidation? Keto. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4294438/; pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18046594/
Things like the soft denouncment of red meat at 13:58 are why I comment. Abbey says the RUclipsr may have a hard time with meat generally, then grandstands about *red meat* specifically when red meat is likely to not be included in the 2 week keto elim, since it's infamously controversial in nutrition science. Even if Sanne did plan to eat it, Abbeys own study says there there is a mere **association** between red meat and negative health outcomes, not that red meat causes those outcomes. Plus the study she cites is only in women and not in the general population, so by her standards it shouldn't count, but I guess population standards can be more relaxed when the study supports a stance you agree with.
"Detoxing," while overused and nearly devoid of meaning due to improper usage, is actually something the body does do. All it means is clearing out things that are harmful, and while the process can't be rushed by scams like juice cleanses and such, uncovering and eliminating harmful foods from the diet is the whole point of elimination diets; it's giving your body a chance to recover from the toxic things that were pumped into it and keeping those things out, basically like drug withdrawal but for food. Use of the terms detox or "full body reset" change nothing. The body is always "detoxing", the keto elim diet is just meant to root out what the toxic substance may be. Also, walnuts are too high carb for most keto eaters.
At 15:57 you say she's eating 95 grams of carbs. I would agree if you said "net carbs," because that's what keto people usually count, since "net" excludes fiber and other carbs not absorbed by the body. Everything you say that is premised on this 95 number is therefore somewhat dubious.
Lastly, Abbey commented on the need for keeping track of glycemic index and glycemic load to know if the body can handle carbs; it's actually more about insulin index, which glycemic index is a heuristic for. Diabetes is only technically a problem with internal blood sugar control; it's actually a problem with internal blood insulin control. This matters because while carbs can spike people's blood sugar and insulin response, proteins can spike their insulin response, but not their blood sugar; it's that effect on insulin that causes real problems, and Insulin levels are rhe more accurate marker of potential problems in the body compared to blood sugar levels.
    And, done.

hey abbey! i have a question. so ever since quarantine started I've been drinking one of those emergen-C vitamin supplements powder that you mix with water and I just am curious if that is actually beneficial? thanks!

Verity Sullivan mega doses of vitamin c do not boost your immunity or reduce the amount of time you’re sick. The only vitamin supplement that has been clinically shown to help with reducing time of sickness, like the common cold, is zinc. Keep in mind that it has not been shown to boost your immunity in any significant way, either. Don’t waste your money on those vitamin c packs unless you’re literally not eating your fruits and vegetables! The best way to maintain a healthy immune system is to get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy diet. Stay safe, all the best

Eg Eating a red bell pepper, 100g of Brokkoli or an orange will get you all the vitamin c an adult needs in a day, so unless you don’t really eat fruits and vegetables, vitamin c shouldn’t be something you are lacking in :)

To me, this was more in line with an AIP diet. Usually one does this with a Dr or nutritionist's guidance. You eliminate basically everything then add one thing at a time to se if a particular food affects inflammation levels, pain, nausea, exhaustion, ect. The whole checking the blood sugar thing was weird.

I don't personally eat red meat, but from the friends who I've spoken to that do, almost all of them complain that it upsets their stomach (steak in particular). Can you comment on this? Is red meat hard to digest due to lack of fiber? Why does steak and other red meats seem to be hard on peoples digestive systems?

I tried keto once because of the claims for mental health that it fixes anxiety. Oh boy it just didn’t feel good.
Then I became vegetarian for other reasons while still trying to do keto imagine that 😅
    Keto just wasn’t sustainable.
I’m soo glad I found your channel.
Thinking about food just became something much simpler in my mind 💛

I did a ketoish type diet while cutting weight for my first Muay Thai fight and it didn't take long to end that lol. I had to add in more carbs because I was miserable, despite eating every few hours...and my kidneys hurt.

Omg thank you for debunking the nightshade veggies thing. My Mom had this physical therapist after her wrist surgery who told her not to eat nightshade veggies and it made me so mad. 1. PTs are not dieticians and 2. Red bell peppers have the most insane amounts of anti-inflammatory antioxidants! The idea that a healthcare practioner would scare people out of eating the healthiest foods on the planet -- really grinds my gears.

I agree with most points made in this video and think the advice given to follow a ketogenic diet as a sort of reset was definitely bad advice. Where did they come up with 2 weeks as being the best amount of time to fix any sort of problem? Measuring blood sugar to see what a food response will be and equating it with inflammation is also making me smack my forehead over here. I appreciate you pulling research and using it to back your expertise however, I had an issue with you citing the Wan et al. (2019) finding as a way to make a point that keto may cause inflammation and reduce the concentration of good bacteria. While the paper did show a high-fat diet could cause this issue, it is worth noting that the higher fat diet was not a keto diet as it still contained 40% of calories from carbs. Additionally, the fat source consumed during the study (which was provided to participants) was soybean oil and according to the paper " It should be noted that the intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) was relatively high in the higher-fat diet group (24% of total energy) owing to exclusive use of soybean oil, which is rich in n-6 PUFA. A higher intake of n-6 PUFA has been reported to have proinflammatory effects." I'd like to see a study like this on participants who are on a true ketogenic diet and are consuming a more realistic variety of fats in the diet. I cycle on and off keto and soybean oil is NOT something I consume.

So are you saying an "autoimmune diet" is moot for people with autoimmune disorders?? Honestly just curious, help me understand!

    • @ohleander02
      @ohleander02 4 года назад

No. But I think if you've got an autoimmune disease or issue, your diet is really something you should be reviewing with your doctor AND a dietician.

I have seen two of your videos reviewing Sanne's diet and honestly I don;t think you do her justice. There are several videos that seems to show restrictive diet but I have watched all of her videos and she eats very balanced and healthy on a daily basis. Maybe next time chose a video that is not so controversial? Anyway, thanks for the free information on your video!
