I recently had to have a locksmith out to my business to re-key 21 exterior and interior doors. They were all Schlage commercial brand. If they’ve got that little slot I’m going to be sick… Great video!

nope - it is only a Kwikset things. Schlage are said to be better. Many are critical of this rekey system as there are plastic pieces and higher failure rates. I got here researching what to do on a house we are getting. I'll go Schlage...

an excellent setup for room rentals. I was looking for something to secure the shared guest rooms and switch out locks with new renters.
A digital lock would be even easier, but this is the best solution for physical keys.
I thought this video was awesome!! I had no idea about being able to do that. Sadly though, I have very cheap locks. So first I must invest in more expensive locks throughout my home with the ability to do what you have shown us. That was REALLY NEAT!

Don’t do it the cheap locks with keep you from being the easiest house to break in to in the whole block.

Good video, but I'm surprised that he didn't reorient his front door lock to match the deadbolt. It's pretty simple, and it's gets rid of the annoyance of having to flip your key.

Interesting 🤔 so can you use any extra key you have once you have used the extra ones included with the kit? And what's to stop someone from using a kit to go around changing people locks?

I have these with dead bolt and regular for bottom. I haven’t programmed because I’m having an issue that I would like to resolve. Turn dead bolt left and it locks fine, but when I got to lock bottom key I have to turn it right which is strange. My tenant often leaves bottom unlocked unknowingly. I actually attempted to reverse thinking this was the issue but the cylinder can’t fit in any other way. If you understand do you have any tips so both dead bolt lock and bottom lever can both lock door when turned left. So strange. I spoke with cs and sent video and he wasn’t any help, it’s gotta be simple. Any help is appreciated. Just want both locks to turn same way to lock. Thanks.
It sure you can do anything about it. Deadbolts always lock when you turn them towards the door jamb. Handsets lock left or right, depending on the manufacturer, but independent of the door jamb. I don’t think you can reverse it.
@@handydadtv Yeah unfortunately you just gotta buy a different lock. It's dumb imo. Turning the key toward the latch to lock should ALWAYS be how locks are made to work.
I have 5 kwikset exterior door locks. All have individual keys. Can I re-key all door locks to work with 1 key that I choose from my multitude of extra keys? Or do I need to buy the kwikset re- key package? I have the reset tool that came with each lock. Thanks.
You can pick the key from one of the locks and rekey the other four. You don’t need to buy the kit.

Can I use any smart key? I need 6 keys, so if I buy 2 of these sets can I use the key set thing that came with the lock to set keys from this set?
Buy one set. It comes with 2 keys. Take one to the home center or hardware store to make duplicates.

What if you don’t have that but want to keep your old key AND the new door knob (its black versus silver). Can I just switch the innards?
Likely not. A locksmith may be able to rekey the new lock with your old key.
Yes. However, if you're going that far, you could just manually set the lock to the current key. It's not hard, and there are a few videos here on youtube on how to do it

You need the old key. If you don’t have it, replace the lock or call a locksmith.
FYI there is a hand held device specifically designed to take a picture of the inside of the key way and decode these types of locks. Im sure you will be safe for a few years but eventually you will want to disable mechanical keys and just go with smart locks.

Hello, how do we make two or more copies for the same lock? After rekeying a lock with the smartkey the first time the original does not work anymore.
That’s correct. You rekeyed the lock. Throw the old one away. Make copies of the new one at a hardware store or home center.
@@handydadtv thanks! It’s quite disappointing because this product was advertised by Kwikset for rental properties, where tenants can have “temporary keys” while owners retain the master key. I don’t own rental property but want to do the same setup for family members.

Yes, if the old lock is a SmartKey lock then it’s compatible with the new lock.
so, if you have 5 locks, did you purchase 5 re-set key kits? or did you purchase 1 and happen to have another 4 different keys for the others?
You just need one kit and you can rekey unlimited locks.
All the locks come with the tool, but the reset key is the same in all of them.
I just moved into an apartment a week ago. But i almost just shot the maintenance men because i thought they were breaking in. They were changing my locks because they say it wasn't changed when i moved in. But i couldn't figure out how they just changed my locks without replacing the whole thing and he showed me a device. So of course i had to come to RUclips to see what it is because now im worried if criminals can change the keys from the outside. I found a device like that a year ago and didn't know what it was but now i don't know if maintenance dropped it or some criminal was doing something with it.

No. You need the current key to turn the lock before you can insert the pin.

How do you rekey a lock where you can have two different keys that can open the same lock?
That’s called master keying. You need a locksmith for that.
Sounds like someone removed a pin or two from the lock! I bet that both keys are very similar. If you put any old key in there, does it still open, or is it just those 2 keys?
If all the keys work, you should just replace the lock. Smartkey systems don't have any master-key option available.

so all you need is a shim (piece of red bull can should do the trick) at .025 to rekey that type of lock? To "any key" with bidding...LoL. Imagine coming home to have your home rekeyed by your neighbor as a practical joke after watching this video.
You still need your original key to re key the lock so unless your neighbor has your house key then he can not re key your locks.

If you don't have the original key you still have to go to a locksmith. And because it is a smartkey lock you can't get a new key using the key code.

@@handydadtv Lol nope this is untrue. You can take the lock apart with ease, and manually program the key.
It's annoying to do the first time, and there are a few small pieces, but it's not hard.

You can’t use any key as the new key. You need to use the keys that come with the tool.
That's not true. Whenever I get new tenants, I'll ask the guys at Ace if they have any spare sets(from people buying two locks but only take the working set of keys).
Then I'll get two more keys made for less than five bucks and go rekey the house.
I do however make sure every key will open/close the lock 5-10 times before ending up with two sets of keys that don't work.
At Ace or any other store that sells locks, if you ask for a spare set, most of the time, they will give them to you for free. Then you've only got to pay for additional copies.

No. You can only insert the tool AFTER inserting your key and turning the lock cylinder.

You have not hit the lottery , you have just inherited a junk lock that fails constantly. I’m a locksmith and change these out all the time .

No, you need the old key to change it to a new key.
Lock cylinders are cheap and super easy to replace if you have an old key no need to call locksmith. If you lost your key this gadget won't help you anyway.

FYI multiple times you showed us the biting on the new keys. PLEASE buy another set and do not show people the bitting. Just sell the old set on ebay, don't throw it away.

Are u saying that he has showed us the new key to his home and the “biting” is the shape of the key where it will hit the tumblers so now a lock picker could make a key from the video that would open the lock? Is that what you meant?

Watch again. You need to insert the current key and turn the cylinder before you can insert the pin to rekey it.
