With my first youtube video, I'll show the people how to get the cut code using a set of depth keys. Incase you get a customer with 14 of these locks and they've lost the keys. Just need to figure out how to make youtube videos first 😧
Hi Jason. Thanks for taking the time to do this video. A great educational video again. Great to know how to avoid pitfalls, and what to look out for. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
When I started my Locksmith adventure last year, I converted all of my door locks to the Kwk Smart key. I like the function and so far they seem to be working great. It’s a good set up to keep an eye on the durability etc. As far as the re-key, I got one of those acu reader camera set ups. It has been especially good for lockouts. Makes me look like I actually do know what I’m doing! Lol I just re-keyed a house with 6 Smart Locks and got that little ‘bite” you mentioned. Now I know why that happened..Thanks Jay!
I have always used the 14mc instead of the true cutter for KW and yes widen cuts unless there is a close to macs dumb bitting (like 51515) then I don’t widen
Nice vid Jason. I’ve found that if it don’t feel smooth after performing the rekey procedure then do it again. It may just be a tooth off on the slider. Since the keys need more accuracy do you charge the same to code cut them as you would to duplicate them? I have a duplicator that is spot on but I prefer to code cut if it’s Smartkey but if I have a bunch I might use the duplicator.
I get a fair amount of calls where people don't push the key all the way in and then it doesn't work after they "rekey" it. My reset tool paid for itself the first week.
Hey I had a case (where you put the better resetter), two of those pins were popped out where they couldn't be depressed with the reset tool. I disassembled the core further and cleaned/reset the springs/wafers where they belonged and reassembled. It reset perfectly and worked great. It was a side door short sale house going from bank to bank so replacing it was not really important. Wonder if this is a bad practice, or if repairs like this will hold up. The key that cause this problem was like a 56616 and the 1 cut surely was what popped it out like that to begin with.
I watched another RUclips video saying this Kwikset lock is crap and he recommended Schlage but I saw a video of yours saying the B660 quality went downhill because the shroud is now gone. I just replaced all my locks with this Kwikset. Do you recommend I replace all my new Kwikset locks and switch to Schlage?
Good video. I have entry door that is exposed to weather and have had to replace lock in the past. I think the weather has a lot to do with it. Will the lubricant help with the weather issues on my entry door Kwikset lock? Kwikset told me not to spray lubricant in my lock. Thanks
Kwikset is goofy saying that, lubricant helps almost everything as long as it is the proper type ;) LPS1, Houdini, TriFlow nothing else is as good and absolutely don’t use graphite or graphite based spray
A quick question I couldn’t find an answer to on the Schlage website. I am hoping to rekey a Schlage encode, smart deadbolt and a Schlage B 60N deadbolt to use this same key. Is the five pin cylinder on the Encode deadbolt the same or similar to the five pin cylinder used in the B60N deadbolt? Would they use the same pins if I bought a rekey kit online to rekey these cylinders? A vendor on eBay is telling me they use different pins, but he doesn’t sound that sure of himself. Many thanks for your help.
I got curious about the cores and how they work, so I took one apart. I found that it's rather easy to set them to a blank key and then use the tool to key it however you need to. Only takes a minute or two. When you can't find your cradle or the better resetter tool, it's good to know how.
Wait, sooooo that cradle allows you to rekey these when the customer doesnt have the original key in the first place? If so, where do I buy this cradle? & where’s the best place to order a few cans of Houdini 😅
Heya I’ve got this deadbolt pinned at 56554 and it picks at the last one 4. I thought that maybe I pinned the other one that I keyed to that wrong. I switched out the key to a different smart key lock and it picked again at the last one. I don’t have a supply of these so I was wondering if you could pin one up and try the lishi pick on it. Which is the one I used btw.
My personal KW cradle works fine. The one at work doesn't and I've ruined two deadbolt cylinders. Now I just hand it over to my boss and let him deal with it.
I hate working on locks then come out looking like an auto mechanic. Graphite is Definate NO for me. Plus it gets all over the doors, you end up spending half your time cleaning up the mess than working on locks.
“You forgot to spray lubricant on the deadbolt latch while you were there, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU”
me : 🥺

Fine Video Jason. Never thought about neededing to lubricate the cradle.
Kwikset Smart Key is synonymous with the word “however” in this video because…smart key

Thank you for the video Do you have to widen the spaces or are the keys cut on center on the 1200 code card.

WD-40 has a lock and other things specific, great video!!!
have a great day

Good information Jason, Thanks for the great video as always.
Great job Jason.
Great video as always... this is going to get so many views!! 😁👏
A lot of good tips here as usual; I especially liked the one about always code cutting SmartKey key copies instead of duplicating them!
Also great tip on separating out SmartKey rekeys on invoices/receipts

But Mr Locksmith, I only had graphite and some keys from the hardware store
Enjoyed the video And found humor in it !

The b60 lost the shroud, the 560 still has it, and the 660 is kinda overkill
Your Kwikset are fine as long as you have long screws in the strike plate
Looks like Kwikset is making better cores. Could have sworn, when they first came out cores were made of plastic. Is that core metal?

Yes, same cylinder. The encode just has a extra oval ring around the top of the cylinder but in no way affects rekeying
Schlage pins will work fine

@@citylockapolytechnikeyllcc7936 thx!! I appreciate you!
@@51-FS they had Houdini at my local Lowe’s
I would really not consider WD40 because of how much plastic is in there. WD 40 often doesnt play nice with the plastics in the long run.
Great job Jason, thank you!!!

Dang it Jason, you didn't throw it 😀
I mean…it does deserve it 😂
No warranty with "smart key" locks. wont install them. Rekey if i have to but prefer to replace with a good lock.
My personal KW cradle works fine. The one at work doesn't and I've ruined two deadbolt cylinders. Now I just hand it over to my boss and let him deal with it.
I keep forgetting to add another new one to a order 🤦🏼♂️ I think Harbor Freight makes these things
Hmm, sometimes I get so angry at these Crapset Dumb Key locks that I want to re-key with the rotary "fix it" tool, otherwise known as a drill
Kwikset smart key was a great concept for landlords, but the worst security ever.
All of that is too hard,!😄 I'll just replace the lock with a Lockwood or something similar. :)
I hate working on locks then come out looking like an auto mechanic. Graphite is Definate NO for me. Plus it gets all over the doors, you end up spending half your time cleaning up the mess than working on locks.
You lost me with all the talking.
that happens with impatient people, I was so sorry about this loss I didn't even see it for a couple of months
Boring
