5 Tools You Require When Resetting Your Kwikset Smart Key Lock.
One of the best things about a Kwikset Smart Key Lock is the fact that you can very easily reset the key. This means that you have the chance to take any old useless key in the house and turn it into the main key. This comes in handy when you already have the copies of the old key as it is more convenient for everyone than having to make new copies. It is also useful when you want to render someone’s key useless without having to change the entire lock. Either way, the feature is something very useful. Lock resetting is a pretty easy project and is something that you can try if you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty. But before you get into the entire process, you will need to have your tools. Below is all that you need for successful key resetting and why you need it.
    1. Screw driver
The first thing that you will need when resetting your key is the appropriate screw driver. The term appropriate here means that the screw driver matches the screw heads on the lock. The screw driver will help you take apart the lock in order to gain access to the lock cylinder to make the necessary changes.
    2. The existing lock cylinder
This is the most important part in this entire project. The existing lock cylinder contains the parts that make it possible to rest the key. This includes the tumbler barrel. You will get the lock cylinder by using the screw driver to take apart the lock. You don’t have to take the entire lock apart. You just need to release the part with the cylinders.
    3. The keys
You will need to sets of keys. The first key is the specific key designed by the manufacturer for your lock. This comes in handy in the first few steps aimed at reconfiguring the tumblers. The second key is the old key that you intend to use as the new key for your lock.
    4. Tail piece removers
The process of lock resetting involves taking the cylinder apart and you will need appropriate tools to do this. The tail piece remover allows you to safely remove the tail piece and the rings from the cylinder and to accurately replace them once the job is done.
    5. A metallic pick
This is used to remove the tumbler from the cylinder. The metallic pick is usually a part of a locksmith’s set of picking tools. Unless you are licensed, handling one of these could get you in a lot of trouble. You can therefore substitute it using the existing key. It will be a little more difficult but is a better option than jail.
    6. Reset tool
Finally, you will need the resetting tool. This is what you use to configure the tumblers to the specifications of the key you want to use.
    Bottom line
The best part about these tools is the fact that they are all very easily available and even more easy to use. This ensures that you do it yourself resetting process runs as smoothly as possible. All you need is to ensure that you know all the steps and that you know which instrument to use in the different steps. If you have all this information, the process should be fairly simple and massively successful.

Wait! Is that a _plastic_ barrel and cylinder? That makes it very vulnerable to various attacks. So how come it can claim to give Grade 1 home security? I would never use that Kwikset to secure anything more valuable than my lunch..

Same! Only I have the old style and everything fell apart. It took more than 5 minutes, but still less than half an hour!
This deadbolt is on a back door and I **have** the key to the door lock and it matches the deadbolt on the front door. So, I've never really cared I didn't have a key to the deadbolt for the back door. It's nice to have it fixed, though!

I purchased 6 new Kwikset Smart Key exterior locks for my home, but I had only a 50% success rate re-keying the locks (after precisely following the instructions each time), and my children heard me use language I shouldn't use. Thankfully, this video allowed me to reset all of the inoperative locks in less than an hour's time, using tools I had at home.
The only advice I would add is to make sure that you have the tumbler oriented as shown in the video
(3:13), so that when you remove the part holding the side pins, it is facing up. Otherwise the side pins will fall out. It's not a big deal to replace them, but just a little bit annoying.
Also, when you have re-set the side pins and are making sure the side bar slides back and forth (4:00), I found that it was useful to remove and insert the key several times, checking to make sure that the side bar slides back and forth after each insertion. Once, I didn't do this, and after reassembling the lock I discovered that the key did not turn. For some reason the re-keying hadn't worked. So I had to take it all apart again.
Thanks again for a very useful video!

This is such a great video! One tip for people who might have struggled putting the tailpiece and C clamp back on. If you are forcing the C clamp on and it wont go on as easy as the video, check the opposite side. There is a small hole there that it fits correctly into. If you are struggling, you are on the wrong side, turn the cylinder 180 degrees and it will slide in as easy as the video.

Wow, I never thought it would be that easy! Thanks so much! Somehow I messed up my Weiser Premis lock while trying to rekey it. After trying many times to turn the key while pulling it out slowly -- the Kwikset proposed method -- I gave up and called customer support. While I was on the phone with Kwikset support, waiting for the next available agent, I found this video and started watching it. I immediately hung up the phone and started removing and dismantling my lock from the front door and after following your instructions, I was able to reset the lock and reprogram it with the new key I wanted to use. It took less than 10 minutes to do so! THANK YOU SO MUCH, I was ready to put this smart lock back in the box and send it back to Amazon! Much easier that way! You saved my life!

Like others, I had goofed up when rekeying a new deadbolt, and thought i would have to buy another new one. This worked amazingly well. The only thing different for me is when I replaced the lock ring, it wasn't tight, I had bent it out while removing it. I just had to bend it tighter again so it would lock into place properly.

We bought a new deadbolt from Home Depot and didn't realize that the package had been returned to the store by a previous buyer. We discovered this after we got home and opened the carton. I went ahead and installed it anyway, then discovered, to my dismay, that the keys that came with it didn't work. Being a Sunday night, there was no way to uninstall and return it for exchange before the store re-opened on Monday, so I decided to search the net to see if there was a workaround for the problem. Happily, I found your video. Your detailed explanation and clear pictures were just what I needed! You saved me what would surely have been a lot of hassle at the return counter. A HUGE thumbs-up to you!! Thanks!

Update: Well this fix worked for about 4 days and then started to not work with the keys again. Luckily I had called Kwikset support and they sent me out a replacement part that was easy to swop out and now the lock works good again, hopefully don't have the same issue pop up.
Wow, this actually worked. I was desperate to be my garage deadbolt working again after it just stopped working with any key I tried. I did have trouble with getting it to slide back and forth when I reassembled it but tried it a couple times and did a bit of moving of the little things that need to line up and then it was all good. Thanks for the great video and instructions.

    Helpful.
My contractor managed to unkey a "smart" key lock, so I had to disassemble the handleset to get to the cylinder (as I figured I would) and this video helped me understand the lock mechanism so I could reset it to my key. You would think kwikset would have some advice about this process, but no...
    Thanks for the video.

This worked great after my rekeying went way bad on my deadbolt. Saved the day. Followed each step and low and behold it worked. Thanks for this information and clear instructions, it saved me so much time and the frustration of having to return and exchange the one I messed up. Redemption!😊

Thank you so much! When we moved into the house we paid a locksmith to key all the locks to use the same key. A week ago my son was bored and messed around with the rekeying tool thereby making it so our keys no longer worked. I ended up installing a cheap deadbolt I had in the garage until I could try the steps in your video. It took me a few tries to get all 5 tiny pieces lined up because they had fallen out of the one piece. After the first two attempts I couldn't get it to slide back and forth. Tried a third time and it slid back and forth so I put it all back together and now our original house key works - thanks to you! It would've been $95 to have the locksmith come out.

You the Man!! Thank you Very much. I too had botched the reset piece, because I had taken the assembly apart to install new pins before I realized it was a smart lock ( didn't know about the smart lock before today) Your section that described re-installing the side bar was the critical piece for me. I had been trying to put it together prior to installing the key. Great video.. Saved me.

Perfect, just what I needed. Just messed up rekeying a key entry, and it was very similar. Just one note; the plastic cover, holding pins and springs, flew off. After gathering springs from everywhere, I tried with a "lower" or "flatter" key (less spring tension), this time it stayed in place. Thanks for the video!
