- Hello everyone,
This is our Mute Swan Nature Diary for the first part of 2023 - documenting the lives of our four Mute Swan pairs that live around here.
We've been following Claude & Maude, Frank & Francine, Snowy & Blanche and Harry & Sally for the last four years. We have learned so much about the species and the individuals we've followed.
It has been a real privilege and an absolutely wonderful experience.
We've detailed the challenges they face through the years, as they try to maintain their territories and bring up young, in this sometimes harsh and changing climate.
If you haven't watched any of these films, linked below is an update for 2022. If you have the time, maybe watch this 2022 update first.
It's proved to be our most popular film to date
• The Circle of Life - a...
So how have our pairs faired since last year's update. Are they still around and are they still on the same territories? And have they managed to hatch cygnets, as the wettest Spring for years impacts on their nest sites.
Follow along with us from January to June 2023.
Thanks so much for your support and thanks for watching
And as always thanks to our friend Serge Pavkin from Ukraine for the wonderful music.

Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Amazing video
Thank you. That’s very kind of you. 🙏🙏🙏
A great diary guys, Claude, Maude, Frank, Snowy, Blanche ect are lucky to have you watching over them. 😊🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢 It's a shame some of these cygnets don't make it. 😔
It is Kev, but expected. Mad Frank is more interested in fighting than protection!! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️.
We are just learning so much!!
Excellent update of Claude and Maude and the other swans. It was lovely seeing the other new wildlife too. Really beautiful thick vegetation too. ❤ good bushwhacking.
Ha it was. I couldn’t find them for days!! Hope you’re doing well Nicole.
Great little film. Fantastic birds. Well done.
Thanks very much 🙏🙏🙏. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Awesome and GREAT beautiful swans! Very beautiful and very lovely! Amazing and astounding! Peace and joy always. 😀👍👍
Thanks so much. That’s very kind of you 🙏🙏🙏
The cygnets are SO CUTE! But it's very sad that the mortality rate is so high!
They really are!! It is such a shame 😨. Difficult to keep watching them disappear.
We love the yearly updates on the swans, the best advice to the new swans is stay away from Frank😂😊 It's sad when they lose thier Cygnets but unfortunately that's nature 😢 Thanks Dave, we hope you have a great weekend 😊
Thanks so much Mark and Michelle. So glad you enjoyed this one. It’s been such a privilege to follow these pairs - we’ve learned so much and we’re constantly surprised at the events surrounding them!!
And Frank is mad all the time!!
Have a great Sunday you two
Once again Dave and Sue you've made an incredible and informational video of the Swans who have touched you lives!! We're so happy to be a part of the world you two share!!
Bill and Jena
Thanks Bill and Jena.
We just so enjoy this environment here!!
Thanks so much Dave & Sue for this wonderful update on the swans and their precious offspring. Beautifully filmed and narrated as always. Glad that you found Claude and Maud and their cygnets🤩👍😃
Thank you Dave - that’s kind of you as always. It’s been such a roller coaster ride watching and following these beautiful creatures - we just can’t stop!! Every day is a different experience and a different emotion
Thanks again mate
@@NBNatureTrailvan well,I’m sure we don’t want you to stop! Great content, keep it coming👍🤩
It was a really nice watch. Many cool shots of the swans.Thanks. Happy weekend.
Thanks Soren - we just love following their progress.
I can't believe the swan feuds and drama! Wow!😮
It’s always changing and always some drama going on. Especially if it involves Frank!
@@NBNatureTrailvan Frank sounds like a real troublemaker!
@@MagentaOtterTravels 😃 he really is!!
wholesom! im brought to tears. Thank you for sharing. Very touching Dave
Thank you 🙏. That is so kind of you. A labour of love filming these wonderful creatures!
Awesome! Finally got a chance to watch the whole thing. An amazing adventure following these swans, was great to see the "second years" that made it through the challenges of that first year. Hopefully the four you have now can keep going! I am amazed by the three survivors we have had this year, especially being able to see the all white swan, especially at this size it is very obvious compared to it's grey siblings
Cheers mate. Yes we’re still learning everyday aren’t we.
That white cygnet is supposed h a surprise. We’ve never seen one here. I wonder, will it have any distinguishing features when it’s fully grown.
Thanks for your kind words mate. 🙏🙏🙏
@NBNatureTrailvan I am very curious about that as well! Right now I can see that it's legs are more of a pinkish color and it's beak is very pale as well, will be interesting if that persists. I will certainly keep an eye on them
🦢🎥 Another beautiful nature diary, Dave and Sue! It's amazing to see your detailed observations of the swan pairs and their different personalities. The parenting styles and their impact on success are fascinating. The visuals are adorable, and your storytelling makes us feel like we know the swans too. Wishing them all the best! Thank you for another great video. Have a fantastic weekend! 👍🦢💛
You too. And thanks so much for your kind words 🙏🙏
Yes it’s been amazing to follow along with these amazing birds. A real roller coaster ride and quite emotional sometimes. A real privilege!!
Very sweet footage.
Thank you. That’s very kind of you 🙏🙏🙏
Nicely done on your video Dave. Great highlights of the swans and how they are surviving and thriving. Plus the delicate balance between the different groups. You have some wonderful footage and narration that you have put together. Awesome. Take care and have a wonderful day.
Thanks Steve. Yes it has been amazing studying them and following them
I’ve realised how fragile their lives are and how the weather makes such a difference to how many cygnets they have. Amazing
Sorry I haven’t been around much mate - a few things going on but soon will be resolved. 👍👍👍
Those little goslings are precious ♥️ What an absolutely beautiful video. Thank you for sharing, and God Bless 🕊
Thanks Kat. It’s been such a privilege! 🙏
Hi there, beautiful video, loved the swans and their cygnets x Julie and Tony x

Wow mute swans are such beautiful birds! This footage of them is so relaxing and I enjoyed seeing the cygnets too! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching. It’s been such a huge privilege to follow their progress over the last four years!!

Hi Dave, so impressive to witness their evrydaylife. Thanks for sharing with us . 💛
Thanks for watching and for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoy them too 🙏🙏🙏
Fantastic diary Dave it's always great to hear the story of the Swans each year. Just makes me realise how quick time goes! Cheers Keith
It does Keith - so fast. We’re away in France at the moment so we’re looking forward to catching up with our Swan pairs when we get back.
Looking forward to watching your latest update from Scotland when we get some decent Wi-Fi 👍👍👍
While watching your content, it reminds me of this quote "we travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us" thanks for sharing, my friend. See you around. 😌😊 36
That’s very kind of you. 🙏🙏🙏. I love that quote
We love following these beautiful birds. It’s been a real privilege!!
Hey Dave and Sue, this video had me captivated. I was happy, then I was sad then I was worried for these baby cygnets. Amazing job keeping track of all of these!! So neat how the mom brings up the grass from the bottom so her babies can eat. Just fascinating! The babies are getting so big!!
They really are. We are keeping fingers crossed that all make it through. But they have a long way to go yet!
Glad you enjoyed it - we’ve loved filming them and following them over the years.
Have a good week Melissa and thanks for your kind words. 🙏🙏🙏
Wow, I must have missed the channel name change somewhere. All good. Just great to see these majestic swans hanging in there for the next generation. Such wonderful footage! Bruce and Otis
Thanks mate. You’re very kind. Such a privilege following these Swans. It’s been an amazing experience.
Yes we changed the name - really just to reflect that hopefully we will be doing more travelling - but still concentrating on wildlife and nature 👍👍👍
That was a gripping movie. Just like a discovery channel program. Your passion for documenting the nature is really impressive. Well done! 😍😍👍👍. There was the only question I was left with - what dangers are actually awaits cygnets and causing their death? Foxes, big fish, birds of prey, drowning?
Well there are many dangers, risks and predators around here.
Firstly, (I didn’t explain this) but a cygnet needs to gain goodness from its egg just before and after hatching. If it doesn’t get enough it will not survive. Over 30% of cygnets perish in the first week.
They are also at risk if their parents are fighting for Dominance over other Swans - as happens here.
And then there are Pike, Otter, Fox and maybe even Crows. But we think the biggest culprit may be Mink. We have them on both reserves.
On our main reserve - we have seen Mink three times near the nesting spot of the main pair. 😨.
But as they grow they become less susceptible to predators.
Hi Dave, I've only watched three minutes so far and am already impressed with the amount of detail and patience you've put into compiling this documentary. Loved the overhead map of the different territories. It's a tough life for swans but I guess that's why swans are so precious.
The whole thing had me riveted - loved the little break with views of the other birds in the area. It's tragic to see the numbers of cygnets dwindle but good to see a few survive this far. Wow, the area sure got lush as the summer went on! Gosh, you have such a keen eye for keeping track of all the birds and noticing the yearlings.
Thanks Donna. Glad you enjoyed this one.
Yes the vegetation around here went mad about three weeks ago and so it’s been really difficult to keep track of the pairs. So it was great to see them again when we got the chance.
I’m not sure why the pairs on the Gravel Pits have been less successful - we have had a really wet Spring.
On the main reserve Frank and Francine are doing better than last year at least. They’ve got their cygnets a month further so fingers crossed they keep going.
Thanks for your kind words as always, Donna and have a great week ahead
Very nicely done Dave. Throughly enjoyed
Hope you and Sue have a great week. Take care.
Thanks mate. You too. Hope you’re doing well 👍👍
Great video Dave and Sue. Looking forward to more.
Cheers Dave 🙏🙏🙏
Simply amazing. Thank you very much for sharing 🌸🌸🌸
Thank you. That’s very kind of you. It’s been a privilege to follow these beautiful birds.
Awesome! It’s so great that you’ve followed these swan pairs and have made such detailed observations! Isn’t it amazing to learn their different personalities! I’m a bit surprised at the different parenting styles and how that affects their success. Adorable visuals! I feel like we know them too, through your storytelling! I wish them all success! 😁 Great video- thanks Dave and Sue!! 👍👍💛💛🦢🦢🦢🦢
Thank you Jen. Yes that’s what has surprised us I think. The males behaviour seems to be linked to the territory they control - the best territories bring most success. Frank always wants to keep control of his territory even though it risks his cygnets. But Claude is content to bide his time until the cygnets have grown sufficiently to take them onto the bigger lakes.
Glad you enjoyed it.
So nice
Thanks Naomi 🙏🙏🙏. Very kind of you. Hope you’re doing well.
Hey Dave and Sue,
We watched this on the telly last night. We love watching the drama of the Swan's lives play out. This was such a well put together nature documentary, worthy of the bbc for sure (reminds us of spring watch)😊👌. We are so invested in all the characters plights, can honestly say that before watching your journey with the mute swans, we had no idea just how perilous a young cygnets journey to maturity can be. We feel like we have learnt so much more about nature, which we are very grateful for, so thank you guys😊🙏🦢. Such a shame the swans haven't been as successful this year, but as you pointed out the weather must have been a factor in this😔. Our money is also on good old Claude and Maude to make it through with some cygnets, they are a power couple😆🙌🦢. Brilliant stuff, throughly enjoyed this😊👌👍.
Hope you are both well
Have a great weekend
Shell and Pete😊👊👍
Cheers you two.
We’ve just loved documenting their lives. It’s really amazing how every day is a new surprise.
It seems that every day something changes and it’s brilliant to try and work out why.
Yesterday, once again, Harry is on the Gravel Pits small mere with no sign of Sally or a nest or any cygnets. We’re completely stumped as to what is going on. He’s acting like a Male with cygnets but there’s no sign of any. But it is really overgrown and difficult to get to a lot of it. So we reckon that when we come back in a couple of weeks we will find cygnets.
But we’re learning so much - so we could be completely wrong!! 😃
Have a great weekend you guys - and thanks so much for all your kind comments 🙏🙏🙏
Good morning Dave. Its just after 5:00 AM here and I'm heading out. I had watched this over 3 differ sit-down and I'm finally getting a chance to write. So I'll be rushing this...
Thank you very much... you know how much I appreciate your work and videos on your Mute Swan study subjects. From my heart... brilliant documentary work scientifically speaking, and lovely documentary video to watch and enjoy.
Up until a few years ago, I conducted my wildlife studies and for the most part was able to make work of it while enjoying my work. However, over the last few years I've gone soft and ended up getting attached to my study subjects, especially the Fox Populations I've been studying. And my goodness... I felt all your ups and down here with your Mute Swans. I used to come home from my field work, do what I needed on the computer after, and it was forgotten when I shut my computer off. These days, I can't help but to worry about the wildlife I study. A few years ago I had a problem with poachers, and worked with Fish & Wildlife on the case, and I had any sleepless nights until the poachers were caught. Lost a few of the young Foxes (Kits) and the neighbor Red Fox Dog, and I was heartbroken. These days there are cameras to watch for poachers, as well as to capture wildlife activities. And I as well as Fish & Wildlife use drones to watch the area.
I suppose I know how you feel when the Cygnets are lost. Wish I could flip an internal switch and shut off my worries, but as I said. I've now gone soft.
Magnificent work Dave, and please keep up your work as best you can.
Blessings guys,
George
Hi George.
Sorry about the late reply- we’ve been across to Europe and haven’t caught up with anything yet.
Yes I agree, it’s so difficult not to get attached to the wildlife as you get to know them individually.
These Swan pairs go through so much around here just to establish a territory - and the weather systems change so rapidly it can make the difference between a good brood or nothing.
Desperate to hear about the poachers.
Hope you and your wife are doing ok and her Mum is settled
You’re a good friend George- thanks for all your kind comments. 🙏🙏🙏
What a beautiful and true to nature documentary! Dave and Sue! Your swan families are absolutely breathtaking! I love the little ones! They are so cute!! Could you just imagine snuggling with one although mom would never let that happen! Lol! Nor dad!
I wonder what happened to the swan?
Great video as always!
Hi Gracie. No idea about that Swan - maybe a Fox caught it unawares, but we do have a virulent strain of bird flu here at the moment😨
Oh gosh, yes, the parents are very aggressive with their cygnets - I’ve been hissed at a lot 😃😃.
But it has been such a privilege to follow them over the last four years.
So glad you enjoyed it and I hope you have a good week ahead.
Hi, Dave and Sue, These swans are just amazing. You guys do such a great job documenting their lives. So sad that you lost some over time, but it is all part of nature. The babies are just so cute.
Thanks guys. We just love following them. It’s just the best!!
Excellent footage of nature and swans. Thanks for sharing. 1 LIKE for the video.
Thank you so much. You’re very kind 🙏🙏🙏
wonderful drama...love your footage around 2.35 to 2.45...That's beautiful....love the new channel name BTW
Thanks Stephen mate. That’s very kind of you. Just been an amazing experience - one that we can’t get away from. These beautiful birds keep drawing us back to document their lives. Loving doing this and glad to be back on here after a mad few weeks 👍👍
Happy Monday Dave and Sue - Your tales from the lakes are always a wonder and I think your productions are getting better and better! And it is quite a story you are telling as the Swans has a complex social life with drama, triumph and tragedy! I guess you never know what you will observe when you go to their areas to observe:) However, it looks like climate changes will make their lives harder in the years to come. Strong and frequent storms will be a problem for the cygnets and it also makes everyday life so much harder! So I hope we can have seasons with normal weather in the decade ahead, but I fear that will not be the case! You take care as you get ready for trips in the van! All the best, Ant
Thanks Ant.
Climate Change will and is making a difference to all of us isn’t it - we are seeing it every day. It was amazing to see how things are impacting on our Swan Pairs too. We have loved following them and we will continue to do so. Even if we will be travelling more this will be out go to place - I’ve just got back from sitting on the meres - just incredible places really.
Thank you my friend. - you’re always so supportive 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Dave so much to say, but in a nutshell that was brilliant 👌♥️
Some of that footage at the beginning and the Signet on the back of the swan was just stunning 😍
Thanks mate.
It’s been a brilliant year so far. But not sure how they will do if this weather doesn’t improve a bit!!
Awesome to see the swans once again. Those cygnets are so gorgeous! Great documentary guys!:)
Cheers mate. Love following them. Fascinating species!!
Great update and narration. Tho I have trouble keeping up with all the names. Some fabulous footage especially of the swans with the cygnets on their back. You must get many hours of pleasure from watching them and I can see why 👍
Yeah it’s been pretty amazing Paul. Every day something different is happening - just constantly being surprised at the events surrounding these birds!!
A brilliant documentary on the resident swans of your nearby lake. Hopefully the remaining cygnets make it to maturity, you would think Frank would know by now not to bring them onto the main lake and keep them on the mere until the cygnets are a decent size, lol.
Looking forward to see how they get on.
Thanks mate. Yes it’s amazing really. Claude stays within about two yards of Maude and their cygnets.
We went up to Grebe Lake again today. Francine and the cygnets in the little mere - Frank up the other end of the big lake chasing other Swans around 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
No wonder they lose them early but they’ve survived longer than the last two years so just maybe… 😃😃
Very cool!
Thanks guys 🙏🙏🙏
really lovely video
Thanks guys. We’ve followed these pairs for four years now and we have learned so much. The individuals are so different!!
It’s been a privilege to watch them really.
Thanks again. Hope Spain is going well
Checking out your channel and this gorgeous scenery and we love the way your lens is used to tell a story! As always supported the full watch time 29:09 and L39. Sending positive energy your way for the weekend ahead!🌟✌🏽
Thanks very much. You’re very kind. We just love to make these documentaries. And it’s been a real privilege to follow these amazing birds.
Have a wonderful weekend 👍👍👍
Hi! This is such an awesome nature vlog! Very beautiful footage and content! New friend!
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏. That’s very kind of you. We are so lucky to live around here and be able to see these beautiful birds on a daily basis. It’s been a real privilege to follow them and we’ve learned so much!!
Hope you’re having a good week 👍👍
@@NBNatureTrailvan yes, nature can be awesome. I walk in an area where bunnies run in huge packs. They are adorable. I vlogged some of it, but they are too fast.
@@MyVintageLife They are!! 😃
I should add the channel name change had me foxed for a moment but I like it 👍
Ah sorry mate. Bit of a faux pas. But we thought that as the van is “incoming” it was time for a change. Still concentrating on the Nature though, just a bit wider afield. 👍👍
Hey Dave sorry I'm late, we are back out camping until the end of the week and I didn't see the notification, think I might have been confused with your change of channel name as I know you as North Bedfordshire Nature 😃 But I will have to remember !
This looked so good but I couldn't watch much as we have limited data and signal. Love the music, catch you soon 👍~ Anna
Sorry Anna. We thought we should just amend the name for when we get our van. We will still post nature and wildlife but also from different places too. But we weren’t sure if or how to change the name without confusing everyone 😃🤦🏻♂️
Hope your camping trips are going well. Just dreadful weather at the moment isn’t it. Really hope you’re getting the best of it where you are. 🤞🤞🤞
@@NBNatureTrailvanAh no problem, what I do when we are camping is make a point of watching a bit ( because of limited data and signal ) of people's channels that I really enjoy and that always watch ours like you, so I didn't recognise your new name and that was the confusion ! I like your new name and picture of the van . It will be so good when you get it which I'm presuming will be soon now with the new channel name whoo 👏 and it will be great to see your adventures in it 😃 We are having a mix of rain and sun but just enjoy being outdoors and not far from home so if we get fed up of the weather we'll just head home :) Have a good week 🙂🌞😎
