This is why I hated when the had him cheat in the later seasons. He was a flawed man but he loved his family and would do anything for them.

absolutely. the show doesn't work without the supporting cast and the onscreen chemistry among all of them: Fresh Prince, Family Matters, Roseanne, etc. I absolutely love each cast member because they add something different to the mix: - DJ and his childish goofiness, Darlene: the bratty obnoxious middle sister, Dan: the role model.....
It was the 2 of them together. It's ruined without her.

Good for you! My dad was a great guy when he was sober, but when he fell off the wagon now and then I hated his guts. He was a mean drunk. A completely different person from his sober self. From a kid who had his share of bruises I am glad you got out of that situation.

@@DianaTrushkov I'm aware, thanks, but I'm also aware that domestic violence victims are often afraid to speak up or their partner has gaslighted them into believing they deserved it or they feel embarrassed about it.
I love how Roseanne brings up that Jackie used to be a cop and she heard that story a hundred times. Knowing that was the one job that Jackie truly took pride in.
That's what abusers do...the target people they think they can shrink down...who may have some image to uphold and they almost bank on the victim to defend them because they want to uphold the image that things like this don't happen to them.
Sometimes the ones that always help and protect and defend need that help in return and I'm not just meaning cops.
There's always the peacemaker scapegoat that takes the brunt of abusers in family or workplace situations and they don't even realize that is what they are doing.
The number of women that hold powerful positions yet are abused by men is staggering. We doubt ourselves and men around us in the workplace give us grief for the positions we hold so while we may not show it, we already are down on ourselves. It starts with verbal abuse then that one hit, the apology and the continued abuse and it's somehow all our fault just like Jackie said. It's a very common story.
Unfortunately a lot of times it ends in death. Because he swears he'll stop. My sister and best friend lost their lives. I'm a lawyer who grew up watching this show and I volunteer helping victims of abuse. I help them take legal action for free if they wish. I always think of this episode and how it's the men like Dan that stick up for women.

Maybe in America men still give you grief for powerful positions, but not in the rest of the world, not in Ukraine where men are not that insecure, where gender doesn't matter if you do your job well. America lags behind the rest of democratic world in this regard. Noone has as much problems with women in power as your country does because it is the norm in the rest of the world, so PLEASE do not think what you see is ubiquitous.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 oh I know this. I'm not the ignorant American. I know America is the joke. I've been lucky enough to travel abroad since I was a child. I'm actually first generation Italian. My dad an immigrant came here as a child in the 30s and had me late in life as I was born in '78. I was raised the European way, as a concentration on education, discipline, attitudes toward culture, art and life. My siblings as well. We were the odd children as my parents encouraged conversations about the world and my dad watched the world news with us every night so we knew what really was happening. I'm a Civil Rights Lawyer and my life's work is here I stay but in recent years as America continues to sink further into the ooze I've often thought of an ex-pat life.
My sister was an anesthesiologist and my best friend an emergency room trauma surgeon. Both highly trained, intelligent women. My point I guess is that many see victims of domestic violence as poor ignorant women with lots of kids and no financial means to escape. The problem with my sister and friend was they were women that had huge hearts and they helped everyone but often suffered from long buried self esteem issues that the men they were with used to break them down. I even went through my own disaster with domestic violence and I was beaten and bruised but I eventually got out. It took me a long time to realize it wasn't my fault. And I logically knew it wasn't but the mental abuse is brutal.
@@lucyinthesky4682 I'm so sorry for your loss I know what its like my father is like Fisher he beat my mother for years sometimes in front of me and my siblings and we occasionally experienced his physical abuse. My mum thankfully left him but we all paid a high price for that too he did us all permanent damage but had my mum not left he would have killed her. I haven't seen him over 20 years he's a sad, bitter and lonely old man now because even his family had enough of him when he went too far and disowned him. He has never been charged for the abuse he has done to women after my mum and it pisses me off the police do nothing for domestic abuse victims thank god for decent lawyers like you helping them the world needs more people like you.

Roseanne was literally the most realistic sitcom on television in the 90’s & tackled real world problems in a very realistic way. It portrayed financial struggles, domestic violence, marriage, and how to raise your kids without coddling. This scene was such a pivotal moment in the series and was written wonderfully. S
Roseanne herself was ahead of her time for helping to create such a funny but honest and impactful show. She doesn't get nearly enough credit for it. ❤
@@MateusGowen Also, Roseanne had to fight the network on _everything._ That is why the show has aged so well. She knew what the vision should be and stood her ground.
It was well acted too especially by John Goodman he barely spoke but didn't need to everyone knew by his actions and little movements like rubbing his cheek as he checks no one's looking before he grabs his coat and keeps walking. Those actions tell us what he is going to do without him saying it. Not all comedies can do that type of scene.

I love that even though Dan didn't really get along with Jackie he was willing to protect her.
At the end of the day, feelings are just feelings. They might not get along in the day-to-day, but Jackie is Roseanne's sister and at the end of the day, family is family. You have to protect your family, even if you don't necessarily adore them.
It's a great message they put out there, I think.
Dan lovedddd Jackie as a matter of fact I feel like he over loved Jackie at some point because if they were trifling the episode when Jackie was taking care of the house while Roseanne was gone could have gone further than it did
Dan and Jackie loved each other! they had great chemistry too
There's a episode we're Jackie has to basically become Roseanne for a while because she's away and they develop a closer bond because of it they learned to respect each other which is why u see they stopped crackin on each other and got on Rosanne
Yeah I didn't really get along with one of my sister's but I defended her a few times when she was with a few nobodies. Yeah I'll admit some of those times she was asking for it from how she is but nobody and I mean NOBODY touches my sister and gets away with it.
Dan and Jackie had a tumultuous relationship throughout the show. But when she was a victim of DV, he silently grabbed his coat and walked out the door. That silence spoke volumes.
Dan may not have always liked Jackie but she's family and he knows there's no excuse for what Fisher has done so he went and gave him a taste if his own medicine. Men like Fisher are inherent cowards underneath thats why they pick on women because they know they can win easily but would never do it to a man because they know its a level playing field and don't wanna lose

Darlene right away telling her mom something wrong with her aunt. Roseanne checking on her and pushing for an answer knowing something is wrong. Telling her sister that FISHER was wrong not her. Roseanne giving Dan a look knowing he would do something. Dan finding out and not saying anything just leaving to take care of him….love this family
That's what made this show more realistic than most. Families argue and get angry with each other all the time. But when someone from the outside hurts a member of the family, they immediately rally around one another. They don't even have to think about it.

Jackie's ultimate confession had me tearing up. Dan's unspoken action in just grabbing his coat made him my hero. What an unexpected scene in a sit-com, portraying an experience that speaks to probably more families than we'd care to admit.
Had me tearing up too. Laurie Metcalf (Jackie) did an excellent job telling Roseanne what happened.

Its too damn bad that when a man hits a woman, he doesnt get his ass kicked anymore. He gets to have therapy for his feelings of anger. Unless she is trying to stab you or your kids, you never hit a woman. This show aged better than its original run in the 90s.

@@meggrotte4760I think what you're referring to is "toxic masculinity" which basically hinders any man from showing any emotion other than anger and having to use aggression as a means of proving he's tough. While Dan has many great qualities as a husband and father, we can't discount the fact that there isn't a strict one way to be a hardworking man.
Wouldn't really say we forgot these lessons but more like society has now adopted some weird mindset that discourages people like Dan from taking matters into their own hands. The laws have now changed to protect people like Fisher.
Criminals kept getting lawyers and crying and well the law seems more interested in protecting them

If you look closely, Roseanne and Dan had an understanding when she looks at Dan as she walks Jackie to the room. Roseanne knew what she had.
Rosie was basically telling him to go deal with it.

John Goodman portrayed such a great husband, father and friend on this show. Wish we could all have had dads like that.
The double look between Dan and Roseanne and the unspoken conversation...beautifully delivered scene. They did a great job with his arrest scene where he covered for Jackie over Roseanne as well.
That moment when Dan is like 🤔😐, and grabs his coat and leaves, THAT is one of the greatest moments in television history. It speaks volumes, without a single word needing to be said. You know what he's about to do, and you know its justified.

That last moment when Dan gets his coat - favourite moment ever; he earned the respect of every man and woman with that one little action. Still get chills. ❤❤❤

Something subtle about this scene that I think was really well-done was Darlene's reaction.
Usually, Darlene would be making some sort of sarcastic joke or remark in response to everything, but she immediately could tell something was seriously wrong and didn't try to make light of what was going on.
Everyone's acting was on point in this scene. And I think Roseanne is a highly underrated actress.
I agree! Season 5 is my favorite of the series. It had so many good episodes and all of the cast was amazing.
@@MateusGowen I remember being pissed about Becky being gone, but their new neighbors, the Tildens, were a great addition that season. I wish they had stayed longer. Ty made a good friend for Dan. Molly was a good adversary for Darlene. And I loved Roseanne bonding with Charlotte.
@@musicaltheatergeek79 You literally took the words right out of my mouth and typed it. I 100% agree. I wish they had been more permanent in the show. I felt like Roseanne bonding with Charlotte was perfect because you can tell Charlotte’s character in the show was a young girl who didn’t have a mother growing up and was socially awkward, so Roseanne bonding with her could have gave Charlotte the development she needed and that would have been interesting to see down the line in the later episodes. Like imagine later down the line Darlene and Becky don’t care about Roseanne bonding with Charlotte at first but then later they develop jealousy because Charlotte becomes everything Roseanne would want in a daughter. Charlotte is great at school, chores, responsibilities, cooking and doesn’t have attitude or talk back. It could’ve brought in some good drama in the seasons where Roseanne eventually looks at Charlotte as a daughter. They could have Molly and Darlene hash out their differences and eventually become close friends. Maybe Ty could have been a permanent best friend for Dan after Chuck. Anyhow that’s just an idea of mine but nonetheless just having the Tildens on the show more would have been great.
And when Roseanne told her upstairs she immediately went.

I LOVED that little subtle look that she gave him. She knew that Dan was going to want to beat the shit out of Fisher for that, and that look she gave him was her telling him that she was completely okay with it. A married couple having such an important conversation without actually saying a word. What an amazing episode!

One of the most powerful and important scenes in the history of television.
Its good but, when the Evans family got that telegram from down South on Good Times...still even more heartbreaking, in my opinion.
I will never forget this scene. Being a domestic violence survivor myself this speaks volumes. The victims always defend the abusers it's not their fault, I made them angry, I deserved it, they had a rough day. They won't do it again. An abuser never stops it only gets worse they just get better at hiding it. Please if your abused or someone you know was abused please report it
I'm a guy. Domestic abuse or boyfriend/girlfriends abuse goes both ways and can be mental too. I'm an ex boxer, pretty good one back then. Those don't do any good when you're too in love to NOT BE STUPID and let a girl (in my case) drive you close to suicide and I just overlooked everything she did and said and even TURNED HER INTO A MARTYR trying to protect me by hurting me..INSANE!!
Would never hit her or even verbally be cruel so the only SMART option would have been to walk away way earlier.
I know it's different, but if a guy beats a girl who has stayed for beating after beating and she finally presses charges, chances are he'll do time.
If I had overdosed...which I came close to...she wouldn't have done a day.
It would have been MY decision to overdose but it is also women's/men's decisions to stay with someone who puts them in danger over and over.

Mental danger isn't recognized as how bad it really is yet.
Funny, being strong and a hard hitter and tough was ALL WORTHLESS then.

I wasn't just mentally abused I was physically as well this includes s*xually abused as well. I was stabbed in the shoulder with a fork sticking out of my shoulder I been kicked beaten and mentally put down. It's not something easy to get over

I’m a victim from 1992-1995 my kids mother broke several bones some twice I had numerous black eyes busted lips and on going mental abuse Why didn’t I fight back 2 reasons I was brought up to never ever hit women and I was blinded by the fact that she was bipolar and schizophrenic which it took 3 yrs and 2 kids later to find out but their was no place for a guy being abused in society but to this day I haven’t heard about DV protection for men
3:54 Jesus, Metcalf was at master level here with that quiver of her voice. Her character could absolutely get on your nerves but in this moment of vulnerability, you forgot all of that and felt so much sympathy for like she was your own sister/aunt. I hope one day I can see her perform live.

This scene was handled masterfully: the quiet house...the slow build and shock of the reveal...R. immediately snapping into protective mode ("Darlene, you get outta here")...their chaotic argument leading to Jackie's breakdown...I never thought much of R. as an actress but the way she delivered the "I can't believe you're saying this!" line was so raw that it must have crossed over into personal experience. Bravo.

I wish my dad did this when my ex used to get drunk and put hands on me…one time my dad just watched. Somethings a person will never forget, no matter how much time has passed. When you’re in an abusive relationship and you have no help, it’s scary….it eventually turns your broken heart cold and changes you. Sending prayers for all the men and women out there suffering from domestic violence. ♥️

Something I didn't realize until now. If Roseanne hadn't made Jackie change her shirt, Darlene would not have seen Jackie's bruises. Nobody would have known about Jackie's abuse until maybe something worse happened.

I remember once as a kid my dad pulling over the family truck and yanking my brother out of the backseat to spank his bare ass in view of all of the highway because he kept punching me (a girl) 😂😂 My stepmom was almost as mad as my brother at the time but he turned into a really protective dad who I cant see ever laying hands on a woman so I think it was worth it.

In hindsight, I think my father may have had an abusive father and that deeply scarred him.
I say this because before I could even walk, he absolutely drilled it into my head that as soon as a man so much as lifts his hand towards me, I was to leave immediately. No questions asked, no passing go, just leave.
At the time I didn’t really understand what he was trying to teach me or his fears for me. But from the little snippets he shared about his mother, I highly suspect his father would beat her and he would nurse her afterwards, since he adored her. I never really got a clear answer from him as whenever I asked he just completely shut down. But with hindsight and based on his behaviour in general, I have to conclude that he witnessed domestic abuse in his life and thankfully, rather than falling into such a pattern of behaviour, he instead became a very protective father in response.

At the beginning of the video Jackie refers to herself as "...a selfish, rotten person..." and then calls herself "a jerk". Sounds like Fisher had already been psychologically abusing Jackie, eroding her sense of self-respect and self-worth. Then later there was the it-was-my-fault/ i-made-him-do-it outlook. This scene so accurately and realistically shows a situation of domestic violence. I wouldn't be surprised if people, both men and women, who watched this episode of "Roseanne" saw their own lives in a new way and made decisions about changing their lives by starting the process of getting out of similar situations.
Just one of the ways Roseanne herself addressed many realistic topics in everyday life that are still relevant. In my opinion, she doesn't get enough credit for how important her show was.
@@MateusGowen As I've watched this scene (which, tragically, reminds me of my own family) over and over something else I noticed is how Jackie says nothing is wrong, tries to downplay the situation and how she defends Fisher and wants to keep his abuse a secret, a secret that will allow the abuse to continue. Jackie must have felt shame and also been aware that exposure of Fisher as an abuser might have made things even worse for her. Along with all of this Jackie and Roseanne had a physically abusive father as the sisters were growing up. I wonder how often it is that someone abused as a child is abused again as an adult by another adult who is a spouse or partner. It's amazing how in only a few minutes we get such an accurate portrayal of domestic violence and its discovery. Whoever wrote this did a brilliant job and the acting is superb.

Laurie Metcalf is such an amazing actress! She made me cry for her! Amazing!
Laurie Metcalf is insanely talented. I think of her in Scream 2 as just one example. You feel such different emotions and forget she’s playing the role. I didn’t feel like I was “watching Aunt Jackie” in that role and that’s the mark of an exceptional actress.
I agree, and she was the perfect fit for Jackie. This is one of my favorite performances of hers in the entire series.
She was Amazing in Scream 2,best killer reveal to this day.

She was phenomenal portraying Annie and received accolades for her performance.Miss Metcalf is a treasure, and her acting in these clips is so true to life .Thank you for your posting of these scenes.

Roseanne gave Dan that look to go ahead and hurt him. Dans concern shows no matter how much they spat he loves her like a younger sis. Laurie Metcalf /Jackie has so much range. She makes me laugh my ass off and then makes me cry. Great show! Great actors! Great chemistry!

There's a story in the town my dad grew up in. My aunts fiance was hurting her. One day, my dad and his 5 brothers told their parents they were going into town. But no one in town saw them there that day. To this day, no one knows where they went that day. The only thing we know for sure is that my aunt's fiance was never seen or heard from again. The assumption was that he ran away because he didnt want to be married. That was good enough for everyone.
This show deserves a full rewatch. Dan Conner deserves his crown for being one of the best sitcom characters ever, as does John Goodman for being iconic
People would say Dan's choice was good because he didn't give it a second thought, but I think the opposite. It was good because Dan DID think about it and decided it was the right thing. God bless him

I was just trying to find a clip of when Loretta Lynn was on the show for some reason, and this video popped up. I truly cherish Roseanne, the Conners were like my second family. No matter how many times I’ve seen this episode I tear up, as my mom is a survivor of domestic abuse, and when Dan grabs his jacket you know it’s over.
That's an amazing story, and I'm glad she survived. I saw Roseanne reruns when I was younger and watched the reboot in 2018 and have seen every episode of The Conners so far. In late 2019, I started watching Roseanne from the beginning and have now seen every episode. I still watch it every night it airs on Cozi TV. It's a great show and was ahead of its time in general and on many subjects. Roseanne herself doesn't get enough credit for what she did. Darlene is my favorite character because I relate to her a lot.

This show touched on some serious issues. The way Jackie tries to blow it off as nothing then tries to defend him then says she shouldn't have pushed so much. Just one of many reasons why abuse is so terrible. The victim feels confused and trapped and even hates themselves but not the abuser. Jackie was a cop. She heard and saw cases like this all the time. But hearing about abuse and living it are very different things. It's not always easy to get out by yourself and you never know how you'd truly react until you're in a situation like this. It's scary.

It shows at the end of the day, when you get into some real trouble; who the real ppl are in your life and the ones that are gonna be there for you!! Dan is the real goat in this episode! He gave me chills when he grabbed his coat!!
