I love this history lesson portrayed as standup comedy. Petition to have Eddie Izard teach all history courses.
Aye!
I thought the same thing. Would be a great series.
Him and his minions already do. Ask any kid anything now, its crap

Robin Williams said Eddie is the funniest contemporary comedian that he most preferred to watch.
Now that's some respect.
To think I began watching Eddie because he is a good performer. I dearly miss Robin.
kent neumann - but Robin Williams was mentally ill and killed himself; personally I'd prefer accolades from people of sound mind.
@@markfox1545 robin Williams killed himself bc he suffered from Diffuse Lewy Body Dementia. Plz do some research before you decide to pass judgement and or spread false narrative.
@@markfox1545 sounds minds don't make the same level of comedy. Robin is one of the best ever in his field.
I love Eddie Izzard. His Cake or Death bit is what introduced me to his comedy and it's just brilliant man, brilliant.
That entire show is brilliant! Dressed to kill I think?

4:50 “Where in England do you live?” “France!” Eddie Izzard is a fabulous history teacher!
Richard is kind of a cheap shot, there, though. Before he was in line to inherit England (he had an older brother, Henry the Young King), he was already in line for and effectively was Duke of the Aquitaine in France. He of all English kings (along with William I and Henry II, who were born French, and probably George I) has the most excuse for being un-English.
@@bobbyfeet2240 More to the point, at that time, Aquitaine was English territory. Saying that Richard was in France makes it sound like he wasn't even in the country that he ruled but, actually he was: he was in England, just in a part of England that's now part of France. Anyway, still very funny and very educational.
I actually don't think it's a cheap shot, you guys, nor that Aquitaine also being ruled by the Normans - not "the English", crucially - invalidates the point that Richard was a pretty ridiculous "English" king. He notoriously hated spending time in London because of the weather, and in his entire ten-year reign he's estimated to have spent a total of 6 *months* north of the Channel. What he really preferred was going off to play at war in the Holy Land, but that's another topic... 😁
@@beeble2003 ...Aquitaine was not "English" territory....it belonged to the dynasty founded by Richard's father - Henry II.....these were times when dynasties were more important than nationalities but when we look back we see things through modern eyes.....the 100 years war, for example was not really England v France, but rather Plantagenet v The various French Royal families.....
The sad thing is, as a high school history teacher, I can tell you that a great number of students wouldn't get that joke.
Eddie is one of the all-time greats. His fearless, free-form style, the miming, the hilarious history lessons…man, he is unparalleled in stand-up. By far and away, the most unique stand-up comedy.
Thanks for all the love and support. I am blown away by the love from you all. I know these are hard times but with love and faith we shall all see the light again 🥰❤️❤️. Love you 🤗
He has that genius for trying to humorously envisage how some things came to be. Typically, he focuses on things that seem foolish once we look at them closely.
the smartest ridiculousness since Monty Python.
He is too ridiculously, wondrously, hilarious. My favorite philosopher king of comedy.
the "you look like an astronaut" line is fucking incredible! (he would be holding his own head, like astronauts hold their helmet)
Thank you for that explanation, I couldn't graps the imagery as I imagined the dome helmet on the suit - not under his arm. 🤣🤣
He is so much smarter, I love when he has an audience who respects/"gets" his intelligence and historical knowledge.
You think that audience did??
Intelligent, well-educated, and quick-witted.

Honestly the challenge with Eddie is keeping pace with his punchlines - they come at you so fast you end up laughing because you know it WILL be funny WHEN you get it! He's brilliant!
Eddie Izzard is hands down my favorite stand up comedian. Her stream of conscious, surrealistic style has so strongly influenced not just my sense of humor, but my worldview in ways that's difficult to overstate

I was just thinking that lol.
He’s going to make a great member of parliament or London Mayor. His original nationally recorded stand-up “Dressed to Kill” was great and overtook Murphy’s Raw in total sales.
He's funny but his history isn't exactly accurate.
Yeah apart from the fact that his history is 99.9% incorrect. ....
His history is better duh lol
"This is the voice of the Mysterons".

I love how his humor is intellectual and intelligent
It is also smart and smart.
@@troyreeves26 I hate to break it to you (by which I mean, "I am thoroughly enjoying correcting a smart-arse"), but "intellectual" and "intelligent" do _not_ mean the same thing. They are often linked, of course.
@@andy6576 Hate to break it to you, but using two synonyms as separate adjectives is tautology. This is why you don’t find such writing in academic literature. It would be like saying he’s a “loquacious, talkative man,” it’s entirely unnecessary and it reads clunky. Perhaps you should “thoroughly enjoy” some English courses before you try schooling others.

Watching her some 20 years after discovering her, it dawns on me how much of my historical knowledge I gleaned from her routines. Damn Eddie is a treasure.
"her"? for goodness sake stop virtue signalling. he is male and doesn't care much about pronouns
@@psyskeptic9979
Eddie actually said she does not mind which one is used. So maybe stop whatever YOU tried to do here.
@@themurrrr I was about to say. In a recent interview, she said that she's letting the female side of her run things and right now is going by she/her. But of course respecting that causes some people to get uppity.
Maybe you should have said instead: ".........DAME Eddie is a treasure" N'est-ce pas?😆
And because Eddie doesn’t care which pronoun is being used, of course we have to use ”she”...’cause we’re ”edgy” like that. (Sarcasm)
LOL ffs... It’s the first-world problem/fad, Non-issue of the century, and nobody except Hollywood and a very loud minority gives a shite.
Eddie has described himself as gender fluid, and although I find him absolutely hilarious and a comedy genius, I really don’t care enough to find out which days of the week he prefers which pronoun. Nobody has the right to to that much of my own time and effort, so I go with the path of least resistence: He/him.
There simply isn't enough of this guy online.
Every time I see Eddie I remember him as the Disco gang leader in Mystery Men. You see, he was protected by the God of Hair Spray, and he _will_ dance again.
That moment when he goes
"Charlie."
I couldn't contain my laughter. Simply brilliant.
(from 2:42 on)
Eddie Izzards brain is incredibly attractive, I love his outlook I love that he is just unique ❤
He looks great here!
Always loved Izzards work, brilliant artist. Done a few good movies too.
I honestly have loved his stand up since the 90's, but they got a bit "meh" for a short while. But he is so back to form here! This whole piece could have been on any of his old stand ups, Dress To Kill, Circle, etc.
Yeah, around 2000 crimewatch did a program on him for telling the same jokes in different shows. It was a real dick move on their part, and it really knocked his confidence. So much so that he didn't gig for three years. He'd been gigging constantly for years and years up til then.
When he came back he was much shakeyier and in shows around then you can see him just not have the confidence in his own jokes.
Thankfully, since then he's kept at it and his most recent stuff is fucking excellent.
Cedric Wublin thanks for that! I did love him all the time, but he indeed went from brilliant to "merely" very good for a while.
Cedric Wublin I mean duh who doesn’t not know that is in fact what comedians do?... they retell and hone their best material and then use it again later. Why would that have done anything to make him nervous??
@@LaDivinaLover Yes, you don't write new sets for each performance. Not unless you are Bob Hope and have writers working around the clock for you.
@@LaDivinaLover Thank you. I was going to say that. OF COURSE comics do the same bits over and over. Always have. The more the material kills, the more you hear it again. The Crimewatch thing was a total non-story.
I love Eddie Izzard’s penchant for humour in history! I actually learn a little as I laugh. The sheer slapstick of his evokes images is brilliant.
