How does Drag Racing Work? [4k]

  • If you're like us, you know a lot more about corner speeds and heel-toe downshifts than you do about 60-foots or a prepped track. Though the high-level premise of drag racing is as simple as racing gets, the reality of it is much more complex. We attended our first ever drag racing event a few weeks ago and decided to get some expert opinions on the whole deal.

If you have never been to an event where cars are powerful enough to go 200+ in an eighth, videos do not do it justice. Its something that needs to be seen, smelled, felt and experienced to truly appreciate the sport.

Went to my first drag strip a few days ago, and one of the cars really stood out in both speed and sound. Apparently it was about 800hp. I thought it was at least 1200. I cannot imagine what's it's like to see one of these 5000hp monsters go down the track.

The highest level of drag racing is truly insane. The two top classes are Top Fuel and Funny Car. Both classes make (depending on atmospheric conditions, track conditions, tune, and setup) 9500-12000 horsepower in an eight-cylinder Nitromethane and Methanol fueled engine. You can feel the ground shake underneath you from a quarter of mile away in the parking lot when they launch, and at the actual race in the stands the closest approximation I could possibly give as to how it feels is that it's like Andre the Giant grabbed you by the shoulders and shook the everloving shit out of you as fast and hard as he could for a good four seconds.
They had to shorten the race distance from 1,320ft to 1,000ft several years ago due to safety concerns - still a controversial decision but one I ultimately understand and support - and they're already running the same speed even in that shorter distance. In perfect conditions they could in theory exceed 375-400mph in a proper true full quarter.
Drag racing is a marvel of engineering and ingenuity at any level of the sport but at the highest level they are without exception brushing up against and setting new limits for what's possible at a physical and scientific level. It's absolutely not for anyone but anyone can enjoy it if they put the time in to learn about it.
Like all racing - every car, class, and type of the sport at all levels should be respected. There's a lot of top circuit racers that wouldn't even think about getting into a Funny Car or Top Fuel class drag car - and a lot of drag guys that wouldn't even consider drifting or circuit racing at the highest respective levels of either sport. All of them are amazing in their own way.

As the driver for a 4159HP pro-modified car that runs 3.6s at 212mph anyone who turns their nose to drag racing, or says all it is, is driving in a straight line is delusional. The amount of blood, Sweat, tears that goes into these cars is a beautiful art. Ive been racing since i was 16. Now as a 30yo Man the rush I got in my ratty 69 Nova SS that was a junkyard deathtrap 14 years ago to now is the exact thing. That fire it puts in your belly will burn till you breathe your last breath.I feel drag racing is the best measure of a drivers skill. Strapping someone into a car that pushes anything more then 1k hp and the butterflies at the tree, those amber bulbs go bright and now it is your time to perform. its not just driving in a straight line. anyone who says that has only driven slow their entire life or race behind a keyboard. I encourage anyone doubting any of this to find a video shot directly behind a car from 0 to the 1320 mark. you will truly understand how much god damn driving we do. keeping a car with 4 digit horse power in a straight line after stomping the game and holding the transbrake in only to let go and to experience 2-5 g's of force is a literal massive task. So to any "racing purists" that scoff at my sport. Remember, any day of the week you can get you ass waxed by some 17 yo kid who built their car in a garage, just knowing enough to make sure it turns over.

I went to my first drag race and it was amazing. I had watched videos but they don't do it justice. I think there were top fuel cars hitting 4 and 5 second quarter miles and that wave of sound hits you like a truck. It was a great day!

Never really thought much of drag racing until I went to a couple of our local flashlight drags events back in the mid 2000s, first as a spectator, and then one time as a participant with my Evo IX. Gotta admit, was a hell of a lot of fun. Still prefer road course, but I can't say anything bad about straight line racing anymore.

Its crazy to see everyone's vision and taste come alive just in cars. You have your Ford guys, GM guys, Chrysler guys, and all of there respective thoughts on what the best engine is or the best turbo. Just to see who truly is faster. The simplest form of racing.

Drag racing is the funnest form of racing to watch and be a part of. Anyone who disagrees, I am curious why you think it is fun to wait 1 min- longer to see 10 secs of action. I mean its fun to do circuit racing, rally, etc. But its fun to sit and watch racing for hours plus like they mentioned in the video there is side bets going on.

Glad you tried something different (I personally enjoy drag racing ) I would love to see you make an effort to explore other racing venues whether it's rally cross, spec racing, LeMons, Hill climb, Ice racing, SCCA, vintage or historical racing. I would love to see you cover one new racing series a year like this, even if it's dirt track cars (modified or outlaws) the American Le Mans series or Dakar Rally (now that it is raced in South America).

It's insightful. I would have liked to see more details about driving technique, engines, transmissions, etc. Even though I don't follow drag racing, I would be interested in the technical aspects of it. This level of racing looks quite difficult.

Everyone who is a car enthusiast should go drag racing, and I don't mean just going to the track and watching, but GO DRAG RACING. even if competing in a straight line isn't your thing; acceleration, power, launching off the line, doing a burnout, going through the gears at full tach, and trying to hit your max speed means at least a little of something to everyone. getting a chance to do this in a relatively safe and legal environment provides an excellent opportunity to learn about ourselves and our machines. Almost all of us likely have a track relatively close to where we live and work, and whatever track this is it'll hold test and tune nights likely a couple nights a week. Frequently at least one night a week will be dedicated to encouraging people to bring out street cars. My local dragstrip is Bandimere speedway in Morrison Colorado, every Wednesday evening throughout the summer is "Take it to the track" night, sponsored by the Colorado Highway Patrol, you'll see cars and trucks of every conceivable type, from boring daily drivers, stance cars, euro hot rods, muscle cars, full on race cars, minivans, 13 second diesel work trucks (me)... something of EVERYTHING. No matter what you have, or what your into, for $25 bucks you can take a couple of laps, BS with everyone in the stages lanes, have a killer time and become a better driver. Your pretty well guaranteed to not have the fastest rig around, and nor the slowest. Its a dang good time, and if your a car (or truck, or motorcycle) enthusiast, you owe it to yourself to at least do this once, or better yet, a couple of times a summer. I guarantee, for everyone who's never actually drag raced before, the first time you pull up to that tree, your going to be 100% adrenaline loaded, find it way harder than you thought, and pull right back into those staging lanes to give it another go!

  • @Bones12x2

I used to be a drag racing skeptic, but all you have to do is go out and experience it to have your mind changed. Even with cars that aren't super fast it's still great fun. Although, I will say that 1/8th mile with cars this powerful isn't as fun as 1/4 mile even if the cars are less powered. The extra track length makes the race much more exciting if one car gets out early but the other guy might have just a little more top end. It's too hard to chase people down in the 1/8th with this much power.
