    • @berengerchristy6256
      @berengerchristy6256 6 лет назад +123

      they are paid just a little bit more money I'm guessing. also the engines they're rebuilding aren't expected to last through the day whereas street car engines can last hundreds of thousands of miles if they are cared for

    • @killorkubed
      @killorkubed 6 лет назад +58

      @@berengerchristy6256 actually they say the block and crank are good for between 8-16 passes (1-2 trips to the winner circle, or 2-4 races if they don't qualify) and when they do rebuild they take the rods and stuff out and mostly the same stuff goes back in again, if they are bent or they get to a certain amount of passes (he said 12, not for sure if that was a rough number) then they get pulled out just to be safe so they are definitely expected to last through the day, and they are cared for like crazy to get that far...
      (that info comes from Hagerty's video btw)
      and to be fair to the standard engine shop, these top fuel guys rebuild the same engine, up to 7 times in one day, and they have all the parts they need at hand, and like when they pull one head assembly off (including the zoomies) they don't have to rebuild that set and put it on for the next pass, they have like 4 sets of heads ready to go, that way they pull one set off and start working on it and put a different set on, so their not even really rebuilding the whole engine in 35 minutes just replacing some parts (this is like comparing a 12 second pit stop in NASCAR to the half hour it may take an auto shop to mount new tires... the auto shop is actually "rebuilding" you wheels where NASCAR is just putting different ones on...)
      and a large part of the months it can take an engine shop to rebuild an engine is waiting on parts and machine work, the more of this that the shop does in-house, the fast the job normally is, and that is not including wait time (like if the shop is busy)
      From my own experience, (we have a pair of 900 hp big block chevy's in our pulling tractors, and we do all the disassembly and assembly ourselves) there have been many times in the past when we "blow up" an engine, this season we had the oil hole in the little disk in the lifter get plugged with something, and it rekt a rod and rocker, which then smashed a valve into the piston.... we tore it apart sent the piston to our engine builder, we had parts back and the engine running in less then a week... pretty good when it is like 4 hour round trip just to get to our shop...), this is not that uncommon, (as we are getting better parts of the last 30+ years it has become much less common) but it works because we have spare parts as well, when we buy valves, we dont buy 16, we have 18 made etc, because we are running custom parts that you cant just buy off the shelve so when one gets bent, it could take weeks to get a new one.... not good for the point schedule.
      at the same time my cousin who needed engine work done for his engine on his hot rod, an engine that our shop is not familiar with, does not know the specs of etc took a lot more time to have a simple rebuild done, specs had to be found by measuring parts, and then the parts had to be ordered etc (I'm speculating on some of that.. but I know a one-off engine rebuild takes a lot longer, vs our engines that we rebuild every year, (even though last year with the rebuild in my engine we barely replaced a thing, basically just new plugs))
      just my two cents

He also was very admit about making sure we had enough parts to put the car back together. John kept telling me if there’s ANYTHING we need he will have it ready for us. With all the crap you see on TV about John and his rivals something you never hear of is how he helps his competitors when the crash or blow their stuff up. I grew up around drag racing also ... my whole life and let’s just say I wasn’t a big force fan.... but after this year I have nothing but respect for the man. He is the truest of true CHAMPIONS ! It's all in the fuel, Nitro Methane, it burns at a ratio something like 7:1 opposed to gasoline which burns at 14.7:1 air to fuel ratio and like Pablo commented all that fuel cools the engine for the short time it's running. The power is from the explosiveness of it and the amount of air they pack into the combustion chambers with it through the blower. It's pretty high tech stuff.

Loved The Wheel Standers and the first Rocket cars. Some real great memories....... I was a NHRA DRAG RACE fan for a lot of. years but stopped watching when the distance was shortened. I understand the want to improve on safety however it’s just not the same excitement level. Special Thanks to John Force and Family for all You continue to do to advance the sport........ Afterthought: the top fuel and funny car classes should adapt the same basic engine and clutch packages as the nostalgia funny cars. They’re much cheaper to run, and it gives a chance for The nostalgie teams to be competitive… All they have to do is change bodies. We might even have 32 car fields again! They should be able to run in the 5.20’s at about 280 miles an hour… That’s fast enough for anyone. It’s a helluva lot more sustainable. Tony Schumacher’s on the shelf… Why? No major sponsor. Even the sponsors are tired of shelling out massive amounts of money. If we keep this up, the sport will die.

      It's definitely dying. Noticed how empty the stands were in many of the shots ? There used to be HUNDREDS of tracks and now there's just a few dozen at most, and even they can't draw big crowds that often. The NHRA is committing suicide by their own hand. So many missteps that it's impossible to start naming them. I hate to think that professional Drag racing in it's current form, won't be around that much longer....but unfortunately, it won't.

    Courtney is right. I can't believe they haven't made rear engine funny cars the standard for safety. I've seen them before but I guess they aren't competitive. I guess if Don Garlits had run funny car they would be. If anyone watching this hasn't been to a NHRA event you need to go, there's no way to express how incredible the whole thing is from the sound to the speed to the insane pit action. NASCAR is a childs play in comparison. You can see everything in this video live in the pits, they are open to spectators with just a tape to keep people out of their way. He's not kidding about the fuel, if you are in the pits when they fire up the engine and it's not burning all the fuel it's like getting maced. I don't understand how some of the crew people can stand right over the engine with the exhaust blowing their hair back and not tear up or choke. They must eat glass and chew nails in their off time. Notice at about 3:30 when Courtney gets out of the car in the pits with her gas mask on as she's talking about them that all but one of the guys working on it don't have gas masks on.
