  • Too much talking? Me? Playing demos at 5:15 and 7:27. Future demos will have less chatter.
    It finally arrived! I REALLY tried to keep my expectations low because, small and solid state AND because I'm using electric guitars through it rather than acoustics or archtops. Oh, man, was I ever blown away.
    My tweed Champ clone does not sound BAD for jazz with the teles...but I need an EQ pedal for 2 of them because I can't get them warm enough otherwise. And even with the EQ, there are spots (like around the 9th-11th fret on the low E and A strings) where unwanted harmonics tend to "bloom" in an unpleasant way. It's the main reason I looked at Henriksen in the first place...the secondary reason being lightweight portability.
    One thing I forgot to mention, in addition to the dual inputs, is the Bluetooth capability. I can stream music from my computer or phone to the Bud, either for casual listening or for backing tracks to jam over. This is HUGE! I know these are expensive, but the features, versatility and sound quality really make them a value in the end.
    Man, this thing hit a home run! I have no affiliation with Henriksen, but WOW! I will be doing more demos/performances with this amp.

    Your video is helpful! I appreciate your thoughtful, articulate comments. Also happy you plugged in a Tele because I own one and am hoping the Bud will give me the warm tone I’ve not yet been able to find through other amps. I look forward to more of your playing AND thoughts on minimalism. Thanks!

      All I play are teles. My two traditional ones have slightly hotter pickups and 4-way switches, which give you a series position to go with the middle parallel position. That also means 2 hum-free settings. I think the parallel position sounds a little Gretschy and the series position a little like a P90 or humbucker, depending on the individual pickups and how they pair. My other tele is a home built one from a prefab body blank and neck. It is sort of a reverse Esquire...just a humbucker-sized Charlie Christian pickup in the neck position.
      I should do a video on minimalism. I'm not as minimalist as I'd like to be just now...though I'm more minimalist than I've ever been.

    Appreciate the review! Thank you. Especially the comparison with the Champ as I own a '76 Vibro Champ; David Allen modified it for me back in 2017 and I'm still not crazy about it (nothing against David - he does great work). I'm waiting on a chambered Warmoth Tele which will be my main jazz guitar and was considering pairing it with the Blu. Perfect for jazz guitar camp; no problem competing with a jazz drummer or horns.

      Nice. Are you going to post about that Warmoth build on your channel? Or are you maybe on TDPRI? I would love to check that out.

    How quiet does this go? I need to practice in my flat during the daytime (usually nobody is around to hear it but it’s nice to know

      You can get it down to TV volume, maybe a little less. It also has a headphone jack. You can get as quiet as you want!

    Jesse I have a les paul standard and play the blues with some gain to get that Joe Bonamassa blues sound. Any gain settings on this amp to achieve this sound?

      @prodigaljess  6 месяцев назад

      Hey, thanks for dropping by. To be honest, I haven't tried to get a gain setting on the amp on its own. I have turned up the input gain (which seems to primarily add compression) and it does get close to breakup at higher settings, but this is not what I would call a gainy amp. It does take pedals well, though, as evidenced when I demoed my new Don Mare pickups running a Tumnus into it. You can check out that video here: ruclips.net/video/orl95raN01k/видео.html. I have a separate video with the old set of pickups also through this setup. Hope this helps.

    15:03 - That's kind of what happened with me - by happenstance I got into playing in jazz combos regularly - it wasn't long before I began to notice that my drinking plummeted and I stopped buying so much gear.

      Wow. Props on getting a handle on your drinking AND your G.A.S. I subbed your channel and will try to check out your stuff in the near future. Cool to meet a fellow jazzer. Thanks for checking in.

      @@prodigaljess - That was something I had noticed with amateur rock players - they were a bit over the top with gear. Don't get me wrong - I do love my gear and effects pedals - but, none of those things will make me play better. Comparing Jazz to Rock: When I played in rock a band I felt like I was pretending to be a rock-star. That was cool though - I'd always get free beer if not a free meal with my free beer/wine at the places we played. Those little things make you feel like a real rock-star! LOL But, now that I'm playing jazz combos I feel like I'm pretending to be a musician (a lot of the jazz players in my group are 100% professionals - intimidating). I'm more at the beginner level - with intermediate expectations. And, that brings me to another quirk of those amateur rock bands - music ability inflation. Honestly, it just gets kind of annoying. Anyway, one of the professional jazz players has the amp you've got - the Henriksen. For Jazz I've just been using my $92 Orange amp from eBay (that I had to fix twice - posted to RUclips). Although I have used my 1979 Fender Twin Reverb a few times - when I was in the mood to move an 80 pound amp. That was my first real amp though - got it when I was 18. Anyway, cheers!

      @@silvermica Hey anything you can dial up a good jazz tone with is good in my book. I love tube amps, but I'm loving the Bud too. I also played a JC-77 in a music store that sounded pretty good too. So I guess I'm not a purist.

    Do you by any chance use a modeler (Helix, Quad Cortex, etc.) and play it through the BUD?

    • @prodigaljess
      @prodigaljess  Год назад

      I don't. I've never used one. I find them overwhelming and confusing. Of course, I find most pedals that way (especially my Strymon stuff). I tend to mess around until I find a few sounds I like and stick with that. Modelers are probably not as bad as I imagine, but I've never messed with one. I've heard good things about them though, and if I could get over my hangups, they might cure me of a moderate pedal addiction over the years (mainly tremolos, delays and Klon-style drives). Switching to jazz has largely addressed that though. I use the Flint for delay and reverb for jazz and the El Cap for country/rockabilly slap back and ambient/worship stuff. Depending how good they are, a modeler might be a good option with the Bud because you could add some tube amp simulation to your sound without the headaches of tubes or the weight issues of tube amps.
      My Bud has pretty much put my tweed Champ clone out of commission. I'm in the process of selling it. It's a great amp too, I'm just looking for a different sound now. Looking to buy a clone of a Blackface Princeton Reverb instead (probably Allen or Vintage Sound). The Bud is so good, I can procrastinate on this indefinitely...it doesn't twang quite as good as a tube amp...but it's pretty good at even that! Otherwise, it's great for cleans for jazz, ambient and ballads and stuff.

      @@prodigaljess The modelers are fun and sound really good, but I can see how they aren't for everyone. I agree with you about the strymon pedals like the Timeline and Big Sky. I ended up returning them from the place I bought them because they were too complicated. I'm into reverb, delay and tremolo myself and have many great pedals. I don't really get along with drive pedals at all, but I have several. I end up usually with a pretty clean sound, though I do love a good distorted, drive tone. I just can't seem to achieve it with my own equipment. I really am attracted to the Bud Six for two reasons: on its own it seems like it's a great amp, and second, according to @johnnathancordy it works great with modelers. Sounds like you really enjoy your Bud.
      Two other points, I have recently come across the Headstrong Li'l King amp, a Princeton tone with great improvements. It sounds fantastic. I'd consider buying it, but I have a Bartel Sugarland, which though not technically a Blackface Princeton is a fantastic little 15 watt amp. The second point is that one of my favorite little pedals is the Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master. The reverb on it is the best I've heard, and it has a sweet delay (so it's a 2 in-one). Works great if you have a small board. I have Strymon Flint, but I'm not crazy about the tone. I'm still looking for a great trem pedal. Anyway, thanks for replying. You're moving me closer to getting a Bud!

      @@johnmccarthy9445 I've heard good things about the L'il King. I'm looking for a Princeton clone myself right now (and someone to buy my Tweed Champ clone with a 12" ceramic speaker and my Gibson J-45 Studio Walnut). I'm looking hard at the Vintage Sound 15 and the Allen Amps Sweet Spot...both well-regarded Princeton clones. If I can move that other stuff, I'll probably pull the trigger.
      I, too, have the Flint and it has a decent reverb and a couple of the trem settings are good, but it's not my favorite. It IS versatile though as you have several types of trem and verb, and you can even mix them together and get a cool Leslie rotary speaker organ sound...but on the whole, it's a little too "digital" sounding sometimes. My favorite reverb to date is the Hardwire Supernatural Ambient Verb (the guy that sold it to me begged to buy it back). Favorite tremolo (that I've owned)...hands down, the Suhr Jackrabbit. Though I would really like to try a Diamond Tremolo.
      I never flipped for Earthquaker stuff...maybe I'll give that one a look if I ever tire of the Flint. I will say, I also have the El Capistan and it's an EXCELLENT delay.
      It sucks...you used to be able to just flip stuff on eBay if you didn't like it and make most of your money back. Now the Biden admin's new law makes them report sales over $600 annually to the IRS. Bullcrap. You can't make money half the time on Craigslist, so that only leaves forums. I have a bunch of pedals and pickups I'd like to unload, but it's going to take awhile.
