  • What is the best amp/modeler/sim or pedal platform for an archtop guitar playing jazz? Here, the contenders are: UAFX Dream 65 from Universal Audio, Strymon Iridium and Milkman The Amp. Every amp is played, tested, demoed and reviewed, before they are compared. I will also go through some of the specs and features, and try to give advice to different needs or taste. Which one(s) will I keep?

    The Milkman sounded so sweet. Impressed with the Dream 65 as well. The Iridium sounded like there was a blanket over the speaker.

    Fiiiiinally someone who is getting into demoing such units with a more dynamic approach.
    I am a little bit tired of all those distorted demos, where you actually can’t hear how those ampsims react, when playing more calm and smooth.
    Thanks!Ordered the Dream 56 for its responsiveness as demo! 👌🏼🙂

    That was qn awesome review. Ive been using a Nux mg30 and have no complaints, it actually has blown ne away. . I still want the Dream and Milkman 100.
    We are in a golden age of gear, Ive been playing since the 60s and still cant get enough!
    Thanks for this vid, it helped tremendously.

    Finally a guy who can use the tone control and make a clean amp sounds good, and this is the MilkMan.
    All the promotion I saw, actually demotivated me from getting it, except this one of course.

    Thank you for doing this video! I have been looking at all 3 of these lately in interest towards jazz sounds. As you can imagine, it was very refreshing to hear all 3 compared together for strictly jazz tones. I have been leaning towards the milkman, and I think this pushes my choice more towards it. It still sounds more dynamic while still being clear, articulate and full to me than the other two did, not that they sound bad by any means. Have a good one!

      my buddy bought the milkman and has been disappointed in the power. Not nearly enough for playing with an organ trio or louder jazz group. I think the TC combo 65 with a quilter tb 202 is a better solution

    I got the Milkman about a week ago. I've played it through headphones and cabs, and I've been really happy with it. It's replacing my Dream and PRRI.

    Not a jazz player, but as a pedal steel and “Jerry tone” kind of guitar player, I LOVE my Milkman The Amp 100. The only amp I’ve ever owned that rivals it is my old 1977 Mesa Mark I - which weighs almost 70 pounds and has all the headaches of a vintage tube amp. I have a Hard Truckers (Grateful Dead) style 1x12 cabinet with a vintage JBL K-120 speaker, and the amp and cab together are less than 35 pounds. Tone is to die for!

  • @picker63028

    Excellent presentation. I love the clean tones and all 3 delivered quality sounds. The Milkman is a notch better and of course can drive a speaker cabinet. But then you pay double so all 3 are capable of providing what I'm looking for.

    If they were priced the same then the Milkman is a no-brainer because of its power section. For going direct into the mixer then I would pick the Dream.

    For shure it is a big issue with latency a around 6-10 ms it starts to feel saggy,..and the notes feels flimsy,...Thanks dear Gisle for a great demo and awesome playing. Love cheers☯🙏💚

      I think the UA Dream has the highest latency of these here. It’s 3ms. Which is great on its own, but once you add that to other latency adding devices and distance from your speakers it adds up. Sound travels around 1.1 feet per millisecond. Most people won’t notice it until it gets around 9ms, which is like standing 10 feet from an analog amp.

    This is one of the few reviews of these products I've seen where the reviewer plays fairly straight ahead jazz, which I play as well. Was very impressed by the reviewer, gained a lot of info. Do you think the Milkman's sound is similar to how it is through the headphone output? Thanks!!

    • @GisleTorvikOfficial
      @GisleTorvikOfficial  Месяц назад

      Thank you so much! ☺️ oh of course it depends on the headphones, and it's always a bit different to get the sound in the room compared to headphones. But the core tone is very similar.

    I need a solution for quiet late night recording that doesn't involve my loud as hell amps. I am currently using a 65 Twin as my main amp and I've played a bunch of old Duluxes over the years. To my ears the Dream sounds, far, far closer than the other two and other modelers that I've heard. And it does the same in all the videos that I have watched on RUclips too. Maybe it's just me, but holy shit, It's actually pretty incredible how much it sounds like the amp. Did not expect it. The Milkman would be fully useable, but man, I have never been a fan of the Stryman. It just sounds way more DI. Kind of bland with a strange, artificial top end. Just don't see what people like in it. Thanks for the video. I have been researching for a while and now and I have come to my decision, I will be ordering a Dream pedal. 😃

    • @GisleTorvikOfficial

    Turn the mids to zero with the Strymon and voila you will have an FDR sound much closer to the UA, that is important to understand. Bringing mids in will make the pedal lean towards Fender Tweed Amps. The Strymon takes pedals a notch better than UA device.

    Great video comparison! Just a question: how do you set the guitar volume pot (full or not) for such beautiful cleans? Because UAFX Dream goin' very fast to overdriven tones...

    • @GisleTorvikOfficial
      @GisleTorvikOfficial  8 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you! That really depends on the guitar and pick ups. This guitar doesn't have very high output pick ups, so it's not a problem to have the volume pot full. Try lowering volume and increase output on the Dream. Of course, turning down the volume part on the guitar always helps to get a more smooth sound. And maybe roll off the tone pot a bit too?

      But it was the 100? I've actually use this paired up with a 112 cabinet with Celestion gold, in a large venue/ 600 people, playing with a big band... Of course it was fully cranked, and had it close to me.

  • @jeffbateman2339

    Which one takes heavier drive pedals better…. I like my cleans much the way you have them here, but I play a lot of weddings and have to cover a huge variety of music styles…including some 80’s and 90’s rock. I have a Helix, but I really just don’t think it sounds good live and I’m tired of spending so much time trying to dial in great tones direct…
    So, I’m thinking of building a pedal board around the milkman. Thoughts?
    Thank you

    • @GisleTorvikOfficial
      @GisleTorvikOfficial  7 месяцев назад

      I think you will be very happy with the milkman. I think all of them will work fine, but the Milkman takes everything I throw at it very well.

    • @davestagner
      @davestagner Месяц назад

      I’ve done recording using distortion/fuzz pedals (Rat, Boss Tone clone, some others) through the Milkman and I’ve been very pleased. Unless you’re really going for a modern metal sound and need a modern metal type amp, the Milkman is fine. The Milkman 100 in particular, with its boost switch, is capable of getting the sort of slightly hairy, midrange-forward tone of a Hiwatt or an old plexi Marshall - not properly British-sounding, but that sort of gain levels, while still hitting a tube front end. It LOVES gain pedals. I’ve tried a couple dozen with it and they all worked really well.

    so with the ua, is it common to have a speing reverb in jazz? like is that something guys like joe pass ot wes montgomery used?

    • @GisleTorvikOfficial
      @GisleTorvikOfficial  5 месяцев назад

      Back in the early days, if you wanted reverb, it was only the reverb in the amp, and that was spring reverb. But you also had players like Jim Hall playing his Gibson GA 50 which didn't even had a reverb.
