In our wetbay we had to put a plastic shoplight with 60W bulb.... it's keeping our water moving great.... we are staying in Colorado this winter! Glad to see you figured out a solution for your wetbay!!

In our 11VK, there is a light up at the top of the compartment, out of sight, in the water bay. I didn’t even know it was there , for a year, until someone over on the FB group mentioned it. It’s the only light I left, as an incandescent, because it does a good job of keeping the temp in there above freezing. It’s 12 volt, and doesn’t really draw much juice, but does get quite warm. You might see if your model has one too.
Marty, thanks for pointing that out! Unfortunately, our 19ND comes from the factory as an LED light, not even sure if it has a socket that we could swap for an incandescent. ☹️ I will check, though, because that is a really great idea! -Howard

Right, between heated tanks, recirculating water, pipes all inside the coach, etc we thought we would be fine, too. The lightbulb trick works like a charm! No problems at all the second night at almost the same temps. 👍 -Howard
We are full time rving and currently camped near Arches and Canyonlands as well. Back a few weeks ago we were in Alamosa CO seeing Great Sand Dunes National Park when a storm hit anf it was -2° to -9° at night. We went through the same experience of 4am working on the pipes to get things going again! About to head to Zion and Byce - hoping it's a little warmer!
Glad to see you overcame the setback and went on to a great adventure. Thank you for so beautifully showing what is a hidden gem at Canyonlands. I pulled a small trailer into a campsite a few miles before the visitors center and spent three relaxing and beautiful days and gorgeous nights. Now, I need to get back and see it in winter!
Hello just saw your video. Mainly from the title. I wanted to give some advice to the situation as I used to live in North Dakota during the winter to as low as -20 without freezing pipes. I hope this doesn't sound too bad but just want to give advice. First winter package is up to the manufacture. Usually this is down to 0 degree C or 32 F but varies from manufacture. I also always see people using a shop light to heat up the wet bay. I wouldn't suggest that and instead go with heat tape. It can permanently be put in and shuts off if it's too warm with a thermostat that's included. Also 3M Indoor Window Insulator Kit helps a lot if you don't want to open the windows but want to see outside. Lastly, 2 more items can be used for help in living in the cold not really a temporary use but a permanent for me at least. 1 find a company to make a skirt for the RV this costs I think around $2k but I liked mine. Second, don't get slides and if you do add rigid foam insulation on the slides side walls. This will help. These mods really helped me live in North Dakota. Still not comfortable though and with power issues I moved back into an apartment. Thanks for the video.

@@NewstateNomads I put skirting on for a permanent solution in case other viewers wanted to look into it. It's not however a temporary solution in my opinion. Skirting requires you to hammer stakes around the RV. It prevents the winds to lift it but is very time consuming (1 hour+ install.) When you pack it up, my 5th wheel 32' trailer skirting packs up to the size of a carry on luggage. I also want to look into a diesel heater if I ever want to get back on the open road. Also I never saw your channel until I just randomly saw Winter RV camping and was looking into seeing all that you had to go through. Most of my learning was try and error lol. Lastly, the heat tape I use is Frost King automatic heat cables. They worked without problems but I haven't tried other products as that's available at most home hardware stores. I'll look at more video's in the future. Also born and raised from Utah so thanks for showing me some home while I'm away from home.

@@NewstateNomads Personally I wrapped it arround to where one tape was loosly wrapped around all the pipes in the wet bay. I would do a couple of twists, move down to the next and do a couple twists again. My wet bay had around 10 different pipes to wrap in it and only a door kept it from the outside. My main thing for me was to heat up the whole bay but still had it wrapped near the pipes. It's not sticky so you can just wrap as many times as you like if you get it wrong. Very Easy.

I need to get back to Utah! I was at several of the big parks years ago, but it was a short 1.5 wk trip. And it was late May and super hot. Thanks for the good tips and fun facts!
In cold weather nights like that, use a household light bulb left on in your wet bay so the heat from the light bulb will keep the bay warm enough to keep the pipes thawed
Another trick to protect your pipes is to never park where your wet Bay Area is facing the North wind! Also, you could park your extra vehicle close to that side of the RV to block any extra wind and cold.:) 🥶 I live in South Dakota and it was 9 degrees here last night, as well. I know this was previously recorded, but we go way below freezing here, so we’re used to keeping pipes thawed, even in houses..lol God Bless!! 🙏🏼🌟
The National park was beautiful!! The arches were out of this world...literally!! I must admit I got claustrophobic when you were walking through some crevices. Beautiful though.Such amazing views.I felt bad that your pipes froze,glad you found a solution. Loved the snow,but where I live,that’s a given. Thank you for the beautiful views!! I only had a day and a half in Moab over Labor Day but you guys hit many of the exact same places I found. I loved Newspaper Rock and cannot wait to go back next year.
Glad you got a chance to see Newspaper Rock in person, David! On our visit, the number of people over on that side of the park was hardly 10% of the crowds in the more popular areas. Great minds think alike! 😉
Let's start with a lesson learnt. I'm sure you'll be prepared in future when snow and freezing temperatures strike. 😱 🥶. As in the first video, all I can say is WOW. How absolutely stunningly beautiful. And I had the pleasure of watching and walking through it from my chair n my snug and warm Wiman Cave (😂🙏). Love it! and I was going to suggest a light bulb in that compartment! Have a year round koi pond here in the Midwest for 16 years now and every winter a simple 200 watt light with a styrofoam cover keeps a 12" opening in the pond even though the surrounding ice gets up to a foot thick with -20 degree temps!

My Northern Lite Truck Camper is 4 season and it has a heat vent that goes to the wet bay just to prevent the type of problem you had. Of course it is built in Canada..so they know true 4 season. I think a lot of campers are labeled as such but are actually not rated to be in extended cold temps. Northern Lite or Big Foot campers...true winter campers.
That's a great point about the heat vent. It's interesting because our specific floorplan doesn't have a similar vent like the other View/Navions and I'm not sure why exactly. Would have made a difference in truly cold weather. However, Canadians definitely know a thing or two about cold weather! 👍🇨🇦 -Howard

Loved this one. Those arches are indeed a natural beauty. Howard, when you inserted the clip about the big chunk of that arch falling off, for a minute until I realized it was a old clip, I thought it actually happened while you were there...then I had the DUH, moment. LOL You timed it just right. I appreciate the closed captioning on your video. I'm not sure if RUclips placed that there or you allowed it to be there. It's so helpful. My beloved is very close to needing hearing implant surgery. His hearing aides just don't get it loud enough. So our TV volume is on 18 -24 most of the time. I wear earplugs or I'd be deaf too...lol so I watch my videos with earbuds or ear plugs and love having the closed captioning. We have a Smart TV. It has closed captioning. But my man just refuses to use it. Been married 30 years, no changing him now...lol Katelyn your hair in the sunlight is so beautiful. I adore long hair, yours is stunning. Ive lived here in Utah for over 20 years and ive not gotten to visit these places yet...I will say thou that during the winter months, because of the high elevation there it does get pretty cold in the canyon and desert areas, even 20 degrees colder then it is up in northern utah....one place that would had been cool for you to visit was cove fort, utah, it's right along the very end of I-70 and I-15 connect together....there is a cool fort to check out there.plenty to see here and enjoy....

I don’t know what you have for power, but one of those small red colored heat pads glued to a wall in that bay with a thermostat set just about freezing.you can get a 50watt pad. They use these on oil pans in the Arctic.
Chris, that sounds like a great idea! Bonus points if it runs on 12v DC, but we could also make A/C power work there if we had to. When you say heat pads, do you mean the silicone ones like another person commented? Do you have a link? -Howard
@@NewstateNomads Actually you can run them with any power source up to120v. I worked in communications in an Arctic climate and we used to run them on 24 or 48 v depending on the sites battery plant. We glued small ones on camera housings. A small aluminum plate behind it and a little bigger will help dissipate the heat. We used that red RTV sealant to attach them . They are red colored and come in many sizes they are a flexible pad with a heating wire imbedded in them. Any auto parts store in a cold climate would have them. phillipsandtemro.com/solutions/specialty/pad-heaters/
I love fiery furnace. When i went you could watch a video and then go out on your own. It was over a 100 out but in the pathways it was cool. We walked up on deer in the maze.

100% free! We loved the location, super close to Moab, and closer to the southern entrance of Canyonlands. 👍 Definitely lighter crowds, which also helped with social distancing, too! -Howard

Do some research and look at areas around the big 5 and bigger state parks. Fremont is one and Capitol Reef. A lot of Utah is overlooked by the larger parks.

We had a Moab mistake also... my wife and I took the long hike to Delicate Arch in the summer. We started at noon and I don't remember the temperature but it felt like 100 degrees with no shade, I thought we were going to die. We didn't of course and left with some great photos and memories. Hi Rigney Fam! Great question... the best was definitely seeing the snow. So if it was just freezing cold without something pretty to look out, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much! The most challenging was definitely keeping it a comfortable temperature inside. Once we figured out the light bulb trick, that solved the wet bay problem. Since we were boondocking, we ran our generator off and on to blast the heat inside. Let us know if you end up camping somewhere in NY this winter! That sounds adventurous! -Katelyn

Hi there, did you visit there Arches just this December or this clip long time. Please give us some advice because we've excited to go right now but just worry about road conditions from Los Angeles to.....( Because there are 2 kids so worry a lot thank you
Mark, you're right to check, we filmed this episode in late October. Just checking the forecast, they are showing lows at night in the high teens, so if there's any precip already on the ground you might have icy conditions. I would THINK that the area would be used to this weather, so they likely take good care of the roads. However, we've definitely never visited in January so can't say from personal experience I'm afraid. -Howard
Hi Mark, I'm in moab right now, we did Arches and Canyonlands this holiday weekend. Friends drove from San Diego and had no issues. The snow here is minimal, I had my snow boots on, on day 1 and had to switch to my hiking boots immediately. It gets cold so layer up as much as possible, but otherwise, should be a great trip!!

@@NewstateNomads Oh I have one under my Lithium pack and its just 8watts 12v - think its used to stop bee hives freezing - we have it connected via a temperature relay little circuit that's set to come on at 2deg C - it uses less than 1 amp and cost under £10 Stirling - it means we can leave the solar connected 24/7 through winter

Canyonlands is one of our all time favorite parks, interesting to see the area with snow. Thanks for sharing another amazing video.
Light bulb works if it is halogen or incandescent. You could also use a 12 volt space heater

The National park was beautiful!! The arches were out of this world...literally!! I must admit I got claustrophobic when you were walking through some crevices. I only had a day and a half in Moab over Labor Day but you guys hit many of the exact same places I found. I loved Newspaper Rock and cannot wait to go back next year.
Glad you got a chance to see Newspaper Rock in person, David! On our visit, the number of people over on that side of the park was hardly 10% of the crowds in the more popular areas. Great minds think alike! 😉
Let's start with a lesson learnt. I'm sure you'll be prepared in future when snow and freezing temperatures strike. 😱 🥶. As in the first video, all I can say is WOW. How absolutely stunningly beautiful. And I had the pleasure of watching and walking through it from my chair n my snug and warm Wiman Cave (😂🙏). Love it! and I was going to suggest a light bulb in that compartment! Have a year round koi pond here in the Midwest for 16 years now and every winter a simple 200 watt light with a styrofoam cover keeps a 12" opening in the pond even though the surrounding ice gets up to a foot thick with -20 degree temps!

Turn off the water pump and open all the faucets before going to bed. That will drain enough water out of the lines to keep them from freezing.

My Northern Lite Truck Camper is 4 season and it has a heat vent that goes to the wet bay just to prevent the type of problem you had. Of course it is built in Canada..so they know true 4 season. I think a lot of campers are labeled as such but are actually not rated to be in extended cold temps. Northern Lite or Big Foot campers...true winter campers.
That's a great point about the heat vent. It's interesting because our specific floorplan doesn't have a similar vent like the other View/Navions and I'm not sure why exactly. Would have made a difference in truly cold weather. However, Canadians definitely know a thing or two about cold weather! 👍🇨🇦 -Howard

You timed it just right. I appreciate the closed captioning on your video. I'm not sure if RUclips placed that there or you allowed it to be there. It's so helpful. My beloved is very close to needing hearing implant surgery. His hearing aides just don't get it loud enough. So our TV volume is on 18 -24 most of the time. I wear earplugs or I'd be deaf too...lol so I watch my videos with earbuds or ear plugs and love having the closed captioning. We have a Smart TV. It has closed captioning. But my man just refuses to use it. Been married 30 years, no changing him now...lol

Ive lived here in Utah for over 20 years and ive not gotten to visit these places yet...I will say thou that during the winter months, because of the high elevation there it does get pretty cold in the canyon and desert areas, even 20 degrees colder then it is up in northern utah....one place that would had been cool for you to visit was cove fort, utah, it's right along the very end of I-70 and I-15 connect together....there is a cool fort to check out there.plenty to see here and enjoy....

We ski camped for years...halogen work lamps throw a lot of heat. Carried 3 of them to use in single and below temps
Nothing broke..insulation plus a small lite or a little HVAC reroute to the cold bay..

I don’t know what you have for power, but one of those small red colored heat pads glued to a wall in that bay with a thermostat set just about freezing.you can get a 50watt pad. They use these on oil pans in the Arctic.
Chris, that sounds like a great idea! Bonus points if it runs on 12v DC, but we could also make A/C power work there if we had to. When you say heat pads, do you mean the silicone ones like another person commented? Do you have a link? -Howard
@@NewstateNomads Actually you can run them with any power source up to120v. I worked in communications in an Arctic climate and we used to run them on 24 or 48 v depending on the sites battery plant. We glued small ones on camera housings. A small aluminum plate behind it and a little bigger will help dissipate the heat. We used that red RTV sealant to attach them . They are red colored and come in many sizes they are a flexible pad with a heating wire imbedded in them. Any auto parts store in a cold climate would have them.

I farmed in the north for a number of years. I found rough service bulbs lasted the longest.

I love fiery furnace. When i went you could watch a video and then go out on your own. It was over a 100 out but in the pathways it was cool. We walked up on deer in the maze.

It’s hard for anything to not freeze in those temps, Kansas should be warmer. Looks like the crowds were light at the parks, probably due to the weather but that’s a good thing 👍🏼
100% free! We loved the location, super close to Moab, and closer to the southern entrance of Canyonlands. 👍 Definitely lighter crowds, which also helped with social distancing, too! -Howard

Do some research and look at areas around the big 5 and bigger state parks. Fremont is one and Capitol Reef. A lot of Utah is overlooked by the larger parks.

I was in the Uinta Basin the winter before last. It didn't get this cold, but there was a lot of snow.

We had a Moab mistake also... my wife and I took the long hike to Delicate Arch in the summer. We started at noon and I don't remember the temperature but it felt like 100 degrees with no shade, I thought we were going to die. We didn't of course and left with some great photos and memories.

Hi Rigney Fam! Great question... the best was definitely seeing the snow. So if it was just freezing cold without something pretty to look out, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much! The most challenging was definitely keeping it a comfortable temperature inside. Once we figured out the light bulb trick, that solved the wet bay problem. Since we were boondocking, we ran our generator off and on to blast the heat inside. Let us know if you end up camping somewhere in NY this winter! That sounds adventurous! -Katelyn

Take a good zero bag. It is the wind that will get you. Moab and area, doesn't get a ton of snow, but it gets cold.
Hi there, did you visit there Arches just this December or this clip long time. Please give us some advice because we've excited to go right now but just worry about road conditions from Los Angeles to.....( Because there are 2 kids so worry a lot thank you
Mark, you're right to check, we filmed this episode in late October. Just checking the forecast, they are showing lows at night in the high teens, so if there's any precip already on the ground you might have icy conditions. I would THINK that the area would be used to this weather, so they likely take good care of the roads. However, we've definitely never visited in January so can't say from personal experience I'm afraid. -Howard
Hi Mark, I'm in moab right now, we did Arches and Canyonlands this holiday weekend. Friends drove from San Diego and had no issues. The snow here is minimal, I had my snow boots on, on day 1 and had to switch to my hiking boots immediately. It gets cold so layer up as much as possible, but otherwise, should be a great trip!!

@@NewstateNomads Oh I have one under my Lithium pack and its just 8watts 12v - think its used to stop bee hives freezing - we have it connected via a temperature relay little circuit that's set to come on at 2deg C - it uses less than 1 amp and cost under £10 Stirling - it means we can leave the solar connected 24/7 through winter
