    I just got back from moab. I did all the national park stuff. We did the hikes in arches and canyon lands which were fun. But simply nothing compared to the stomping grounds in the klondike bluffs. 2000+ dino prints of theropods, sauropods, ornithopods. My wife and I agreed that this was our number one attraction we saw, number two wasn't even close. It's free and secluded.... which blows my mind. If you care at all about natural history this is a must see. I almost don't want to tell people about it, just let them keep going to arches and canyon lands to selfishly preserve the prints for me to enjoy.

    Just wanted to point out that the gravel road at the end of Highway 279 goes all the way to Canyonlands NP. It turns into Shafer Canyon Trail, which is the switch backs you see at 8:20 in the video! It's an amazing drive and takes you through canyons and right along the Colorado river, but it's 45 miles long so it takes quite awhile

    Thanks for sharing your Canyonland Adventure. At twelve years old, my parents Eric and Kathy Nelson and their English teacher colleague couple Dave and Theresa Petersen and I drove two sport utility vehicles ours being an excellent Ford Explorer as far in as we could, and then backpacked 3 days in. We set up elaborate camp by an Anasazi village complete with pictographs, a kachina underground sacred area, and much 'abandoned' pottery shards and corn husks. A nearby cave which my mom Kathy found scary contained more fascinating Anasazi religious pictographs. These were great people the Anasazi. This was my best and deepest Canyon Lands adventure; Although I and my family visited Moab and Canyon Lands say 5 more times; also seeing many other great Southwest Parks, one of my favorite being Goblin Valley.

    And you didn’t even mention the mountain biking, dirt biking, canyoneering, rock climbing, slack lining, zip lining, BASE jumping, sky diving, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. There are guides and outfitters that can take you out to enjoy it all. 5 or 6 bike shops, shuttle companies, 6 or 7 rafting companies, etc. plan ahead if you want a hotel room. Even with more than 10 new hotels opening in the last 3 years it can still be hard to get a room on short notice. Have fun!

    observation: You forgot "Matrimony Springs" It is the FREE TO ALL natural undergound fed water pipe where many-a-camper has refilled their water bottles, jugs. Located on 128 just off 191 the main drag. There is a safety pullout for 4 cars or 2 long RV's. The only reason I found it was that it is near the BLM campsite on 128. I looked over and thought what is that. Water flow is generous non stop at 5 gal/min I'd guess. Fast enough you are filled before the next guy can get his jugs under.

    Best Trip I’ve done so far ! I’m hoping to go again in October. Another cool thing is driving south from Moab, of course you see the Needles entrance of Canyonlands. But if you continue driving south, you’ll bump into areas such as: Valley of The Gods, Mexican Hat Utah, and Monument Valley where the Navajo tribe live. That made the trip a lot morel enjoyable for me.

    We were there last week. We did most of the things you suggested but didn't get to the Dead Horse state park. However, we did drive down the switchbacks on the Shafer Trail and took the Shafer Basin Trail to Potash Road. Our daughter had a meltdown going down the switchbacks but once committed it didn't seem like a place to try and turn around. If someone in your vehicle is terrified of heights, it's best avoided.

    • @JonesingforAdventure
      @JonesingforAdventure  3 года назад +2

      We think you need a minimum of 2 full days to get a good overview of all three parks. In 2 days we'd do this (both days includes some afternoon rest/dinner back in Moab/your home base):
      DAY 1
      Arches NP - Everything but Delicate Arch. Don't miss Landscape Arch, Garden of Eden/Double Arch/Windows, & Park Avenue. Pack a sack lunch for the most efficient visit.
      Dead Horse Point SP - Dead Horse Point is amazing at sunset and it isn't a big hike so we'd suggest doing it on the main Arches day to distribute the hiking a little more evenly across the two days.
      DAY 2
      Canyonlands NP - As much as you can see. Don't miss Grand View Point (we like the hike along the canyon edge) and Mesa Arch. Pack a sack lunch again.
      Arches NP Delicate Arch - The Delicate Arch at sunset experience is a can't miss. It is very popular with lots of people but it is still amazing.
      If you have 3 days you can be a little more leisurely in your sightseeing and probably add in the drive along the river to see the petroglyphs/dinosaur tracks and get a different perspective (being by the river is a much different vibe than above at the parks). 4 days would open up some time for off-roading and/or an on-the-river experience.
      Hopefully that helps! Enjoy - it's an amazing place to visit!

      @@rdiesel84 Last we checked, you don't need a reservation to visit any of the three parks (Arches, Canyonlands, or Dead Horse Point). You pay the entrance fees at the entrance gate for each. If you plan on visiting more National Parks within a year, we think a National Parks pass makes a lot of sense and you can buy that at the entrance station as well.

Those both would have been awesome. I am already trying to plan my return to Moab so I can get into Arches in the early morning for photographing. Canyonlands was fantastic for astrophotography. And seeing all the off-raoding that can be done has me feening to rent a Jeep or ORV to get down into the canyon! They talk about how Hwy 279 goes up around the Potash Ponds if you continue on the dirt road after all the petroglyphs and such. I want to tell everyone that if you continue on that road past the ponds it takes you over to Deadhorse Point. Not up where the overlook is but down below that, where you're closer to the point. Continue past that and you'll end up at Shafer Canyon which is pictured at 8:20 on the video. The road switches back and forth at that point and climbs 1100 ft in a short period. At the top you find yourself about 1/2 mile from Island in the Sky Visitors Center. It's an amazing drive!!! I would recommend only doing it in a truck but we did see people in cars out there so it can be done. Also, if you turn off at Jug Handle Arch (also on Hwy 279 and follow that road up (def need a truck) it will end up with you up near the Deadhorse Point Overlook area. There's a place called Pucker Pass on that road where a very very large chunk of rock is leaning against the cliff and you drive thru the gap which seems small but really there's plenty of room. Finally the best place to get on the river is The Daily which is a 14 miles stretch very close to town. Just North of town turn onto Hwy 128 and follow it about 20 miles. We put in at Hittle Bottom Campground and float to Take Out Beach. You can arrange for shuttle to get back up to your car but my husband just went out and hitchhiked to catch a ride up while I stayed with the kayaks. Easy peasy and if you see someone thumbing on the road, give them a ride. They're probly just trying to get back to their vehicle.

      I'm a little confused with what you are saying. I have driven Rt. 279 to Potash to Shafer up the switchbacks to Island in the Sky many times. I've also taken Shafer over to the White Rim Trail and Muscleman Arch. I've also gone up and down Long Canyon/Pucker Pass several times including recently (March) so I am quite familiar with the area.
      Long Canyon is one of my favorite trails- it's the right turn before Potash Rd. You drive over railroad tracks. From the top of Long Canyon, you make a left (313) and it's mostly a straight 6 mile shot over to Dead Horse point. Without going up Rt. 313 (from town- Rt. 191) or up Long Canyon (from Rt. 279), how exactly are you getting to Dead Horse point? DHPoint is at the top of the mesa and just off of Rt. 313 (which is north of Rt. 279 and the way most people get there.) Where else are you gaining that 1,100 feet in elevation to get to the point? Is there an alternate route I am not aware of? If so I would be curious to learn for my next outing. I know that there is a less traveled, other fork to the right when on Potash Rd. that goes North of the pools just after Elvis Rock. I don't recall if it is even accessible. Either way, it definitely does not take you to Dead Horse point. It leads away from the pools (North) for a few minutes and ends, putting you more or less in the upper valley between the upper mesa and the Colorado River. There is a large balanced rock down that way is called Elvis Rock. Is that what you are referring to? I am just confused because you said, "...that road "past" the ponds (Potash evaporation pools) it takes you over to Deadhorse Point." You did clarify and say "not up where the overlook is but down below that" so maybe this is what you were referring to? It might just be your wording that confused me. Other than 313, taking Potash to Shafer is the easiest way to get to Dead Horse point and by far the most scenic. I wasn't sure why you were clarifying the OP. Again, other than taking 313, this is exactly how you get there. I think it added more confusion to people who have never been there before. Potash has a few twists and turns so it's best to stick to the main, most traveled road. There are several restricted areas all around the pools.
      When you take Potash to Shafer and then up the switchbacks that is Island in the Sky area of Canyonlands. From the top, Dead Horse point is 14.4 miles away from Island in the Sky. Both are in Canyonlands.
      Also, that other trail is called Long Canyon. It's recommended to drive down that- so up Shafer to IITSky and down Long Canyon back to Rt. Rt. 279.

      That route up Shafer and down Long Canyon sounds amazing! We'd love to do that - next time... Do you need a jeep or side-by-side or can you do it in a truck? Thanks for sharing your insight!

      @@JonesingforAdventure Shafer (anywhere in the parks) requires a plated, street legal vehicle- I would recommend a 4x4. Although they have plates and are street legal, UTV's/OHV's are definitely not allowed. There is a big sign at the entrance and it is a big deal if you get cited. I believe it is a class C misdemeanor so not good or something you would ever want to risk. They should put that on the sign because many ignore the benign general warning. Rangers do patrol. If you head over to Muscleman Arch via White Rim Trail (accedssible from Shafer), you need to pick up a permit (free i you go in person to get it of ~$5 if you go online the day before. Permits are very limited.) I do believe that Long Canyon might be an in/out with any OHV or other vehicle...though you would probably have to trailer it to the trailhead. One section of Long Canyon, Pucker Pass would be challenging in a stock, non 4x4 vehicle especially going up, which is why they say to run it top to bottom. Another epic trail you might want to put on your list is called Chicken Corners. FYI- Enterprise vehicles are not allowed on off-road trails and they check via GPS. You can rent Jeeps if you don't have your own.

      Enjoy your time in Moab! You will love it! We made sure to only fly the drone in areas that were outside of state/national parks. The whole area has cool formations and beautiful scenery so it's not hard to find a quiet, out of the way area to fly.

      We don't have any firsthand experience with Moab in February but it could be really great! Moab isn't very big so where exactly you stay shouldn't matter too much. However all the things we mention are accessed from the north side of Moab. Have a great trip!

    Any recommendations for rv resorts in Moab?

    • @JonesingforAdventure
      @JonesingforAdventure  3 года назад

      We like to check on Campendium for reviews before we decide on a place. We ended up at Slickrock Campground which was just ok/a bit disappointing in our opinion. We would check out another one next time but since we don't have any experience yet we can't recommend any. If you can fit, staying inside Arches for at least one night would be amazing (we did that with a smaller rig years ago). Dead Horse Point and the BLM campgrounds along the river are also worth looking into although we don't have personal experience with either (yet). Have fun!

    I can't wait to explore some places like this. But only if they are Handicapped Accessible. Gosh darn being disabled makes it so hard to explore some beautiful places.

    • @JonesingforAdventure
      @JonesingforAdventure  3 года назад +2

      Yeah, some of these national parks or outdoor type places would definitely be tough from an accessibility standpoint. From our recollection though, there are a few options in Moab. Some of the more main locations in Arches are very near the road and have accessible paths out to them. Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point are a lot of overlooks that also have parking right near the view with accessible paths out. The drive along 279 has some cool things to see from the car itself. So while the hikes would clearly be tough/impossible, there are some pretty good opportunities for seeing a lot in the area despite accessibility concerns. (We should mention, we aren't accessibility experts and this is from our recollection.)
      Thanks for watching!
