  • @TheRealHungryHobo

The comparison between Russia and Israel is valid.
Russia didn't get kicked out of Eurovision for "invading Ukraine", they got kicked out for breaking international law and causing untold humanitarian harm, things Israel is also doing.
Different laws (although often not) and different humanitarian harms (again, often not), same core problem - violating international law and causing harm to the world.
Rejecting it out of pocket and implying that anyone who suggest it is an idiot who should be in "idiots corner" is ironically, a bit of a stunned opinion.

Belarus was suspended indefinitely, from ever taking part, in the eurovision song contest, which came in effective in June 2021. Belarus' song was mocking anti-government protests, which faced violent government crackdown in their country, which was a clear breach of competition guidelines. Russia was banned from competing in the 2022 contest and any further contest's following the invasion of Ukraine, so yes, Israel should be banned for their brutal, barbaric, cruel, heinous, dastardly genocidal invasion on Palestine. Please, there should be categorically no double standards. One rule for Israel and a different rule for other countries. Might I also add Free Palestine as well. 🇵🇸

A commission of inquiry investigated the killing of 189 Palestinians between 30 March and 31 December 2018.
It found reasonable grounds to believe that Israeli snipers shot at children, medics and journalists, even though they were clearly recognisable as such.
Israel's acting foreign minister said it rejected the findings outright.
"The Human Rights Council's Theatre of the Absurd has once again produced a report that is hostile, mendacious and biased against Israel," Israel Katz said.
"No-one can deny Israel the right to self-defence and the obligation to protect its citizens and its borders against violent attacks."
The commission of inquiry, which was set up by the UN Human Rights Council in May, said on Thursday that more than 6,000 unarmed demonstrators were shot by military snipers at designated protest sites over nine months.
It investigated the deaths of 189 Palestinians at the sites on official protest days and found that Israeli forces had killed 183 with live ammunition. Thirty-five of the fatalities were children, while three were clearly marked paramedics, and two were clearly marked journalists, the commission found.
Israeli forces also injured 6,106 Palestinians with live ammunition during the same period, according to the commission's data analysis. Another 3,098 were injured by bullet fragmentation, rubber-coated metal bullets or by tear-gas canisters.
Four Israeli soldiers were injured at the demonstrations. One Israeli soldier was killed on a protest day but outside the protest sites, the commission said.

James I taught mental health at vocational level. The students were from all corners of the globe. One day we were discussing the prevalence of anxiety/depression. One of the students burst out laughing . He was from West Africa. When asked what was funny, he said that where he comes from their basic needs were met but the country is poor, therefore nobody has unreasonable expectations So they dont get depressed or anxious about it. And everybody supports everybody else. It certainly gave the other class members lots to think and talk about. And myself.

@@SirAntoniousBlock I get your point but I think there's an implicit "majority" in the initial comment. In this day and age, no country is likely to be exclusively white. However the subtext of that initial comment is that all the participants can be considered white majority countries. That can be debatable depending on which group you count as being white enough. Historically, that definition has fluctuated. Benjamin Franklin didn't consider Germans to be white, deeming them too "swarthy". So while you can make arguments for certain countries not being considered white enough to some, the fact is that the pigment of skin for the majority of people in those participating countries is light enough to be considered white.

Yes Russia invaded a sovereign nation and yes, Israel was responding to a terrorist attack, but if you know they history (which you do) you know it was a delayed counter terrorist attack. There is more history to account for what happened on October 7th than you give credit for and you know it. There is also the question of whose land is whose. This is disputed territory and always has been. As a fan of yours, I’m appalled by the casual reference to “idiots corner” and perhaps on this occasion YOU should occupy it! Local meats tend to be organic and delicious as is the wine. Artisanal beer is hard to find and needs to be offered much much more, and rice wine could be much more developed here in the Mondego area which grows rice. More river and lake caught fish, caught that day and kept in tanks very briefly and then freshly filleted and served would also add greatly to the food, as would freshly foraged lemons and other fruit. There are near me some lemon and orange and occasionally other types of trees which no-one else bothers to forage and which have great fruit (freshly fallen or directly off a tree).
I met one blonde Ukrainian woman with her small children on a bus here (twice), but have never met any other residents who don´t come from the village. Quite different from some places in the Algarve, in the South, for example which have had significant groups of foreign residents (Spanish, French, German, English, etc) all the way back to the late 13th century.

I understand it's a complicated issue, but some of James' point have a bit of a false equivalence.
    1. Yes, you can think Eurovision is a silly singing competition, and not really care about it (in that context), but also understand that there is a specific political weight to the competition and accordingly, you can be pro or against their participation in it.
    2. And yes, Australia is in the Eurovision, but Australia doesn't compete in all the European sports championships and competitions when IS does. And they do that because they obviously can't compete in and with the Asian competitions/nations. Even nearly 100 years after the state was established. So these are two completely different cases.
I think those are two objective points disregarding which side you support.
