Interpreters match the deaf client's communication preference, so it's necessary to know ASL since so many deaf use it. Also it wouldn't be possible to pass a certification test w/o ASL. Hard to say how long the process is to become an interpreter, b/c it depends on how long it takes you to become fluent in ASL. And, interpreting into a new language is a different skill than conversing in the language. Some community colleges have 2-year interpreter training programs, so that's a place to start.
This was hilarious .. Keep hoping these misconceptions will diminish the more we enter the non-traditional jobs for deaf , but they DO persist . Thanks Lynne Kelly for making an important statement about our potential ...
Bahaha way to be, Lynne. I get the same stuff over and over again on calls. even my friends hammer me with these questions. Being in interpreter has its ups and downs. My favorite is "wow, so you know Braille too?"
This is really well done. I have interpreted in the past and I now teach ASL to homeschool high school students and plan to show this to them. I laughed so hard I cried! But on the other hand, I have heard these kind of stupid questions before.
I love this video so so much, it's hilarious I could not start laughing! The alarm that catapults him out of bed or the one that releases the screeching monkey! That is too funny!!
I am hearing impaired (unilateral hearing loss), and I've taken ASL classes in college. These videos are hilarious, but they seem like they could be a little TOO true to life! LOL Thanks for making/posting them, though.
This is so great and unfortunately very true representaion of the deaf culture. I have 30 years of experience in witnessing and dealing with ignorant people regarding my sister. Yes, I am also guilty of being unaware and uneducated of the deaf culture. Eye opening and so much I need to learn. Thanks Jen for sharing!
"Can you open the window so I can throw myself out of it?" Lol....love it. My "Hobby" is interpreting too...believe it or not this sounds quite familiar. My favorite, while standing with a deaf client, interpreting, is, "Don't interpret this..." then the speaker says something they don't want the deaf client to "hear."
This was terribly funny. I am not an interpreter yet and I wonder if people really go through this. Right now I have to do this for homework but this makes me realize that hearing people sometimes can be this dumb.
I LOVE LOE your humor... sad to say... but this kind of stuff really happens :( I wish i could really respond like this tho, but we both know it would not be professional (but i still think it lol).
@Jessin8r I /am/ planning to interpret to put myself through my master's in physics. Of course, by the time I get there, it's possible that I'll decide interpreting is the better path. (Right now I'm an undergraduate working on degrees in Physics and Deaf Studies.)
@SuperLonelygirl1990 What the uploader said, and furthermore, ASL is not 'signing in English.' English has influenced ASL to a degree, the same way all languages in contact infuence each other, but they are completely different languages, just like English and, say, Japanese (which English has also influenced). Actually, Japanese grammar is more similar to ASL than English grammar is.
As an interpreter of over 16 years I have heard every one of those lines come out of someone's mouth. It's hard not to bitch slap people in these situations.
@SuperLonelygirl1990 Still, it's like asking everyone in the world to speak English too. A whole lot of countries don't. And I can't imagine how people all over the world who have no contact with one another would learn a common language.
Jaja I love this! "Since all Deaf people know each other" :) I have so many people ask me if ASL is international. I don't understand why people don't get that.
@Jessin8r That's great! I've also had someone ask me if I'm in training, when I'm working with a team. Then I'm wondering, "Well, dammit, did I look that awkward?"
so I have to ask, are you an interpreter or do you just make these up? To be honest I want to know because I am learning ASL and I have had these exact worries and have heard some people ask these questions as well.
@sdterp The sad fact is that all human beings believe in all kinds of things that contradict each other all the time (I do and I'm sure you do too) it's just funny when you know how stupid the particular mutually-contradictory beliefs are.... Which doesn't detract from the fact that these videos are completely amazing and make life worth living.
@SuperLonelygirl1990 That's like asking hearing people all over the world to all start speaking one language to make it easier for everyone. That would be nice, wouldn't it, but how is that possible? Everyone's going to give up the language they've always been using and just learn a new one?
@sdterp The sad fact is that all human beings believe in all kinds of things that contradict each other all the time (I do and I'm sure you do too) it's just funny when you know how stupid the particular mutually-contradictory beliefs are....
Hahahahaha that's great! Those are not made-up questions, people do ask that all the time. I'm studying to become an interpreter in Sweden. It's ridiculous how ignorant people are..
@lynnekelly2000 no they don't have to give up the language that they'v learned!!!! i thought it would be better if learn another language....... it would be easier if they learn the american sign language because it's an international language and almost everyone can speak english so it would be better if everyone can sign in english don't you think
i think deaf people in all over the world should learn one sign language to make it easy for others to communicate with them i was learning the american sign language but then i found out that the arabian sign language is different and the ethiopian is different and in every country has a different sign language and i should learn all the three languages(american, arabian and ethiopian ) :O but then i stopped learning because it's so difficult to learn 3 different sign languages
But I don't get it. Why wouldn't the sign for "apple" be the same for English or Japanese sign language? Even if "ringo" is Spoken Japanese for "apple," there's nothing saying the sign can't be the same. Same way with "Sorry." Different spoken language, same sign even if the local spoken languages are different. I would have done it that way. Maybe the only difference would be finger spelling.
Because languages are developed by the populations of people who use them. Deaf people in Japan wouldn’t have known what those in the US were signing for “apple” or anything else, and that probably wouldn’t have been of interest to them anyway back when the first deaf people communicated by signing. I don’t know how that would happen that people all over the world would use the same language or even the same signs, being separated by such distance. Spoken languages vary from place to place so I’m not sure why anyone expects signed languages to be any different
American Sign Language is NOT an international language. Neither is English! The English we speak in America is vastly different from the English spoken in England, or in Australia.
I seriously hope you are joking! Ms Kelly covered this exact point in her video... she was trying to indicate the ridiculousness of a universal sign language, being as ridiculous as the concept of forcing everyone in the world to speak the same language... and here you are stating the same thing?
"Are you referring to the language of love? Or Klingon?" Fantastic.
These are killing me. I thought I was going to pee on myself.
I'm sorry. I can't finish watching this. I'm dying of laughter.

If you're reading this have a WONDERFUL day!
Thanks, James, you too!

Whoops! "I could not START laughing"??
@@stevenscottoddballz
Stop laughing! Lol.
I looked up this video today (June 2023) to share it. 😛
That was amazing and so spot on. Excellent diatribe there.
I am hearing impaired (unilateral hearing loss), and I've taken ASL classes in college. These videos are hilarious, but they seem like they could be a little TOO true to life! LOL Thanks for making/posting them, though.
XtraNormal videos are always dripping with (justified) sarcasm, and I love it.
Funny and yet SOOOOOO sad. People are so small minded.

This is fantastic!
Universal language of love or Klingon. Brilliant!!

Amazing, this wouldn't be so funny if these things weren't actually said to us during some of our assignments! ;-)
I LOVE LOE your humor... sad to say... but this kind of stuff really happens :( I wish i could really respond like this tho, but we both know it would not be professional (but i still think it lol).
I love these 😂
The Language of Love or KLINGON??!?!?! My day is Made! LOVE IT!
This is hilarious!
Nice!
I SHITTED IN MY PANTS!!..ohhh man :'D tht was fucking hilarious
@randommosinosity Yes, I'm an interpreter. I couldn't have made all this up.
@Jessin8r I /am/ planning to interpret to put myself through my master's in physics. Of course, by the time I get there, it's possible that I'll decide interpreting is the better path. (Right now I'm an undergraduate working on degrees in Physics and Deaf Studies.)
LMAO love it!!!!!
I thoroughly enjoy this series... although I'm a little surprised that it isn't captioned.
i deal with these stupid questions and misconceptions every. single. day. gah

THIS IS SO FUNNY! I bet it's kind of true that this happens to interpreters though
hahaha this was a good one!
so I have to ask, are you an interpreter or do you just make these up? To be honest I want to know because I am learning ASL and I have had these exact worries and have heard some people ask these questions as well.

And when I made that comment 7 months ago, the captions weren't working.
So sighn language interpiters are interpiters part time but spies the rest of the time. Great I was wondering about that!
It is captioned. You just click on the cc button.
Y-E-S!!!

@osummer
I'm *not* a Sign Language interpreter just because I probably *would* saaaaay stuff like that!
@SuperLonelygirl1990 Different gestures have different cultures.
I am a spy!
lol
@bertissimo Oh, and I thought math was the universal language. Or was that music? Ach, I'm so confused.
LOL'd
Lol.

The device that catapults you out of bed = hearing spouse?
Probably at walmart... what don't they sell...?

This is going to be hard of me as an interpreter not to respond like this. Please don't ask me irritating questions like this!!!
Meant of course UNTRUE representation! God I hate typing on small blackberry keys!
😐

I don't see it funny. Because I don't see them use any sign language. Wasting of time!
@osummer
