I'd love to read more about the perfumery from him and first and foremost I'd totally love to read the book written by Monsieur Bourdon himself. Please Gabe, you have to keep convincing him to do publish it! :)

Great stuff! I'm only 2 years into collecting fragrances and being in the frag community, although I've always had a small collection growing up. The last 2 years I actually went deep into collecting...... this opened my eyes a lot. I have a few creed fragrances, not necessarily because I thought they were an old perfumery house. Mainly because I love aventus, GIT, and aventus cologne, but dang this shed light on a ton of cool history. Nice work man. This is super cool.

Dear Mr Smelly , as a french perfume amateur let me congratulate you for your overall stylish way...
you were the first channel I checked a few years ago and continue to do so. This episode is very interesting obviously even if I'm not a Creed fanatic. It's been a bit too hyped and I think that the classic designer hits of the 60's 70's 80's and 90's (some in the 2000's) are the great references. (by the way viking cologne does not feel at all like a cologne and is rather a shower gel type of scent imo)...
Looking forward to your next videos

I agree with the premise in that I’m also pretty interested in the personal stories behind the perfumers. Besides a few most famous ones, most of these people’s attachment to their work gets forgotten along the chain from creation to point of sale.
This is in contrast to something like the fashion industry where designers become superstars and get coveted in the main stream sometimes.
But yes, Creed’s ghost perfumers is the most juicy story at the moment because they’re so insistent that they do everything in house and that the family is the full creator of ALL of their scents. Which smells like bullshit to me, high end luxury bullshit.

Like the infamous Thierry Wasser said, “Perfume is an illusion, a dream”. And so it is. And we fragheads are all bees 🐝 and we are lured into the smells we love. And sometimes we are fooled like a bee in a bee trap. Follow your nose I say and chase the dreams. ☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️

You're right! The thought of wearing a fragrance from a designer house founded in 1760 was really cool. That not being true does suck (a little), but hasn't in the least changed my view of the scents. They are amazing!
The history may not be true but there seems to be something to the "human touch and not machinery" process of development they claim to use. Creed fragrances to me have a certain raw yet refined quality that I simply enjoy. I'll keep a bottle of OV and others in my line up for as long as they produce them and maintain that natural and elevated quality.

best idea for BlackRock - do what made Creed did in the first place but disclose the perfumers. IE give Jean-Cristophe an unlimited budget & get some new masterpieces in the pipeline! probably won't happen but that's what fans of the perfumes would want to see.

Agree completely. Knowing the truth behind the brand makes it more appealing to me.
The historical lies (at this point, I was fooled at first too) are obvious once you look in to it just a little, that Olivier wasn’t the perfumer of everything is obvious- so the bold lies make you question EVERYTHING they claim, such as quality of ingredients.
Hearing the truth lends more credence to the things that matter (quality). I respect the brand so much more in hearing this history.
Really enjoyed this. Wasn’t expecting to get sucked in, but I did.

Pierre Bourdon is my favourite niche perfumer. Jacques Polge(Chanel) beats him overall just because of the sheer number of masterpieces he has produced(8 vs 5 masculine fragrances according to my preferences). Also 2 of Jacques' fragrances are in my top 10 while only one of Pierre's is.
    My top 4 are:
    1. Jacques Polge (8)
    2. Pierre Bourdon (5)
    3. Francis Kourdjian (5)
    4. Francois Demachy (4)
Honorable mention to 3 amazingly gifted female perfumers who created between themselves some of my top favourites.
    1. Sidonie Lancesseur (2)
    2. Daniela Roche Andrier (2)
    3. Nathalie Lorson (2)

I'm a skeptic, and I came into this being like "okay, well maybe he can present a reasonable case but I still think it's possible that maybe it was something in the family history", but some of his points that he raises like how their earliest fragrances that we know about are considered to be kind of shitty and that wouldn't be the case with a long standing perfuming house that's been crafting fragrances for royalty. Also, it definitely was always interesting that you really couldn't trace them back very far compared to a house like Guerlain, which did actually craft perfumes for royalty and that's certifiable by record and we know that they have perfumes going back to the 19th century. With Creed, that's not the case. What they did before Green Irish Tweed was pretty damn sparse compared to what they did after and that's just not how a perfume company that's several hundred years old and dates back to the 18th century would operate. They would have been releasing noteworthy stuff before 1985.
I might have to get this book, it sounds fascinating. Great interview.

To get royal crest you have to actually serve royal houses. So what ever his point is just opinions and someone said and another says. People forget that perfumes are like art, people tend to mimic, copy or be inspired by each other’s creativity. No one has claimed to be the original on making anything. Just shows that the ones who want to claim they originated or “created” just want money. The Creed family only shows their information to an extent because there’s legal documents where states discretion and more. Just because they don’t release that to the public doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I’ve personally seen documents of people they commissioned perfume for and goes back way before they released to the public. People think they released to the public since 1760 when they literally opened to the public in the 1970s. Creed is not the only house who exclusively worked with royals. So has Francis, Clive and others tht can’t disclose that information. These seems more opinion based than factual.

Gabe, if you are reading comments - Yeah, hardly likely the author has any say in anything to do about any potential film version of a book, BUT, in the minuscule chance that stars align, there is a movie, and a producer has your ear…I think Adam McKay would be the perfect director and screenplay adapter for this! The Big Short stands out as a similar story with secrets and lies made into a super fun quirky thrill ride of a movie. He’s your guy! We can all dream, right?

It would be delightful to know more about the creation of YSL Kouros - what have inspired Bourdon, how long have he worked on it, what are his thoughts about this masterpiece, how was the creative process with Yves Saint Laurent etc. The world (or at least me) needs some book, documentary or a 3h yt interview. So you're trying to tell me that there are actually people who believed Creed's "history"? While I appreciate a good investigative report, I think most people out there beyond a casual customer took their stories with a proverbial pinch of salt anyway.
Perhaps the more interesting aspects is just how arbitrary perfume "ownership" can be when they're products procured by a competition method by third parties, when the brand don't have an in-house creative team. It certainly puts a new perspective on some of the fanboism you get in perfume circles when perfume A could do easily have been sold by company B.
As a fan of history, it is always cool to see how things are more intertwined than you would imagine but I'm a little put off of how this book seems to be marketed as some kind of expose when I don't really imagine that ndas, industrial espionage and simple copying/counterfeiting is anything really that unexpected.

You can travel to France and see the house itself. There’s even a vault with older scents such as Windsor and others. People forget that Creed wasn’t open to the public until 1970s.

@@Wastelandgoose but they were a business. A clothing business. That's not in dispute. Their Royal Warrants was for them as a clothing/tailoring business, supplying clothing and leather goods for equestrian uses. Once again, there is zero evidence of Creed having produced ANY perfume prior to the 1970s. The burden of proof is on the party making the claim. Creed claims to have produced perfumes privately for these people but have offered no proof.
For comparison, George Cleverly has every clients last in their storage with their name tags on them. They don't need to talk about a cigar smoking politician because they can just use his name, or Ralph Lauren, or Prince Charles.

I’m buying the book. Expose Creed’s Fughazi ass backstory. Blow the roof off of it. I knew they were bullshit! Also, Erwin Creed comes across to me like a guy who does not have a passion for fragrances at all, it’s a business to him, to think that he would have a hand in creating a single iota of a fragrance is laughable. You can tell an artist from a businessman instantly.

not only is that a lie, the strangest thing is that they would even reference Hepburn when she's famously known for her connection to Givenchy. Of all the celebrities to lie about, why pick one famously allied with an actual fashion house so publicly? but hey, i don't understand lots about how and when to drop names with reckless abandon

    • @JT-rx1eo

@@grosolo Hepburn was a close personal friend of Hubert de Givenchy, and of course L'Interdit was created for Hepburn. I remember seeing a movie with her, and I think Carey Grant, and maybe Walter Matthau (?), wherein Givenchy's name was actually invoked in reference to her character's wardrobe in the movie itself. But Hepburn was known to wear other perfumes too, so I just assumed that it wasn't an issue.
With regard to Creed and historical narrative and celebrity associations, I thought that it would be way too risky to lie so blatantly. I'm pretty sure I've heard Mr. Smelly opine with essentially the same thought in the past.

Dont know if your comment disappeared, as I can't see it, but Creed only started doing scents in the 70's so the likes of JFK Kennedy and Ava Gardner would not be wearing their fragrances. There are, among thousands of memorabilla, not a single 'vintage' bottle of any of Creed fragrances or any contemporary mentions of them at the time- it's all a PR tale really. Although I dont doubt that they may have done scents for famous people since the 80s on.
