American golfer and PGA fan here. Many friends make an annual venture to WM Open. You are correct that a lack of "A" list PGA pros will reduce the crowd. However, the "doomsday" scenarios and outrageous posturing as if it's going to become a drunken zombie apocalypse are off-putting. My prediction is we will see a correction towards moderation next year. This year's weather contributing to delays made for excess not seen before. WM Open is the "Circus Maximus" of the PGA Tour calendar. Cheers!

You're absolutely right about summer golf in the heat. I played 9 holes in Southern California last year and it was 105 degrees out. I physically couldn't get through more - I had a headache and felt ill. And that was with constantly drinking water and using a cart. You can forget about walking the course.

I played summer golf in Houston, and one day I was walking the course. 98 humid degrees. The ranger pulls alongside and asks me if I'm all right. "Sir, you're the only one who's walking out here today." Sure enough, I fainted while bending over to pick the ball out of the cup two holes later. Never again. Mad dogs and Englishmen!

We usually get out to WMPO at least every other year, and even with the weather, I think there were definitely groups that couldn't care less about any of the golf aspect of the weekend. It really is a good time for the whole family for the most part usually, but you're right that these groups try to go up a tic on the meter - it just comes out as lame. I really hope that they're able to dial it back a bit if they even can. It really is a fine line between relaxing fun and too much. We did get to Phoenix a few days early, and also attended the GoodGood Desert open. As a fan of many RUclips golf channels, I was excited to see some of my favorite content creators in person. The idea was great, but being the first live outing, it was a huge miss in person. Yes it was more for the telecast AND the weather was not cooperating, but it was not a great experience to be there. Very chaotic, and none of the staff running the event knew what was going on. I'm excited to see them do more live tournaments like that, but I think you dodged a bullet on this particular event.

Rick and Guy you should do an emergency podcast for 30 minutes speaking about Tiger's new line now that is it all announced. Also Tiger's Sun Day Red logo looks so similar to Slazenger...Ps. Sun Day Red is not really about Tiger wearing red. It's about his love to play golf in the sun, during the day, and of course the colour red. Hence, why Sunday Is two words. Suggestion for playing a new course: Google the course. Open an earth-view (real) map. Use the "measure distance" tool to plot your way around the course. You can see hazards. You can decide which club and which line to use on each tee box.

( was also on 16 for the hole in ones two years ago and that is a life time epic event) If the Pros get angry maybe they need to redirect the anger. Having two rounds each day had an impact on 1) drinking time 2) boredom waiting between rounds If anything I think the event was too tame ( police on 16 etc etc) I personally had a blast. Huge crowds, stadium seating, drunk fans, streakers… I played pro baseball for 7 years, on multiple occasions fans said things that were way over the line that you shouldn’t say to another person unless you’re looking for a fight. This is the reality of drunk fans in a stadium setting. Pro golfers and golf fans are complaining about something that almost every actual athlete deals with every single game. Get over it. Literally they were so bunched up that they were hoping people behind wouldn’t cause a stampede. The organisers had no other choice but to close the entrance gate. Typically people would hang out on the hills on the course but because they were wet many more people stuck to the cart paths causing more congestion.

Great observation on all fronts. Good to hear you are opening up to LIV Golf Guy. Concerning what took place on the PGA Tour at WM...the full blame is on the attendees. Consuming alcoholic beverages has been available to all adults on every tour...hell at The Masters the cost is amazingly affordable; yet you NEVER see such unacceptable behavior. Thus, what took place I do not blame the tour or the sponsor. Moreover, what took place was by a handful of fools...the vast majority of the event was respectable.

Is there more rowdyness at the Waste Management than some soccer matches? This year there were some crazy incidents but seems standard at futbol matches. Am I wrong?

It's the WM Pheonix Open, you know it's gonna be a rowdy one. Every other tournament is quiet and respectful like it should be. If a person who lives in Pheonix and wants to take their kid, then they should already know what they are getting into by going.

Down here in New Zealand, clubs do Summer Membership. We are very lucky in that it never gets too hot or too cold. So playing golf in NZ is a full year game. Summer membership is a great way to introduce casual golfers to local courses who then upgrade to full membership.

Personally, I loved it. Nick Taylor went on an absolute heater to make 5 birdies in the final 6 holes to win. Unreal golf. I love the 16th too... I think maybe they have to tighten it up a bit but it's one tournament a year with it's own distinct personality and that's good for the game and good for us watching.

Watching the WM event for a few hrs each day. It got a little rowdy, yes. But from just watching it seemed about normal for that event. That's why we like to watch it because you get one crazy event then the rest are classic pga, mostly. I don't follow social media so I only saw what was on t.v.

I know a couple of guys who went the WM last year who I know for a fact wouldn’t be able to name a single player in the field. They were the some of the first ones joining in on chants and throwing beers on the greens. I think it would make a huge difference if players just stopped playing but I don’t think that’s an option for most who are fighting for a spot.

If you can find a good course that is fully open (without winter rules) and doesn't get too wet, I think winter golf has it perks: the courses are quieter and approach shots are much easier to execute. I played Baildon (in the north west of England) the other day and it was great fun.

The respectfulness of fans towards the players and from player to player is one of the main things I appreciate about the PGA Tour. The Phoenix Open though, is a “one-off” type of event where the players are well aware of what to expect from the gallery. I really don’t have a problem with this, even sort of enjoy it when the players buy into it. Would definitely not like to see it spread beyond this tournament into others on the tour.

I think rather than a summer membership, clubs could consider a heavily reduced winter membership. For a couple hundred pounds for four months it would keep the tee sheet busy, enable golfers from other clubs to have a feasible second winter option and hopefully keep the bar and other secondary side of the business busy. On having a second club if they were far enough apart it could be play the one that is open.

My thoughts on the WM Phoenix Open is when the crowd interrupts the actual golf is when they are going too far. Have fun even get drunk that’s fine but don’t go onto the course and do snow angels in the sand trap. Also don’t yell at the players or during their shots. Like Billy Horschel said it is their job.

It was like the spring break of golf. The social media press was mostly videos of completely trashed people wandering around the course and falling down drunk. What happens when someone goes to the next tournament and shows themselves like they did at Phoenix? The expectations for how to be a respectful fan at a golf tournament have changed, so how do you enforce it at other tournaments without bashing the WM tournament?

The club where I’m a member offers a ‘flexi’ membership. It’s $600 a year, broken down is $100 to the club, $100 to Golf Australia to manage your official handicap and $400 in prepaid green fees. It allows you to play in weekly comps, including Saturdays, book online in advance and each time you play they deduct the members guest green fee of $45 for weekends. Once your ‘credit’ runs out it becomes pay for play but still all the benefits of being a member. I work Monday to Friday, have 2 young kids so can only play weekends. I wanted to play Saturday comps once every 3-4 weeks so this was perfect for me, rather than shell out for a 7 day membership just so I could play Saturdays. Not many clubs offer this but it’s brilliant and could really work to supplement membership numbers.

I think your point about the lack of "names" on the leaderboard of the WM is missing some context. Yes, this year's tournament wasn't the most star-studded, but for the first time (I think) it was wedged between 2 elevated events in the schedule. So that definitely made an impact, and I don't think the lack of star power can be only attributed to the players' irritation with the gallery antics.

Something's got to be done with the world ranking systems because if you're not playing every weekend with the best players in the world there's no way that the PGA Tour can dictate whose number one to number 50 in the world

I went to WM 2023. The problem isn't the fans, it's the design of the holes 18, 17, 16. They put three giant boxes(suites) all in one area. It's also right at the main entrance. It gets super crowded and with the rain, it wasn't possible to go in the grass(slippery.)
They need to create sky boxes on some of the further holes... Like take away 17 and put one on home 7/8/9 to spread the people out.
