  • Finalizing the barndominium and the final steps of the process has been taking longer than we had hoped. In this episode we'll touch on where we're at and what's left before the shop house will be finished and general life stuff we've been doing as we ring in the new year.

Before your locks freeze squirt a little oil, it really doesn't matter what kind, in the key hole and down in the top and it will help with the ice. I work for a railroad and that is what I do for our locks in the winter.

The Pit Boss is a nice grill. I've had mine for several years. One thing I know is that you definitely need to keep the firebox cleaned out. We absolutely love the grill and use it all the time. Not just for smoking meats. We fire it up for burgers, steaks, anything really. Food just taste so much better on wood fire than on propane.

Sorry you are having issues with condensation at the windows, that should not be happening. Out here in NY, our residential code, which is based on the International Residential Code, requires that if a new home that is leak tested at less than 5 air changes per hour it requires a whole house ventilation system, sized as per code, to introduce outside air into the home to avoid issues similar to what you are experiencing. You should make sure the HVAC contractor made provisons for a system such as an ERV or HRV to introduce fresh air into your home and that it is sized appropriately. Everything is looking great, glad you are enjoying the new house and garage. Good luck!!

Having flashbacks to our renovation. Added a 2nd story to our house and with a 1 year old, we decided to move out to an apartment while the work happened. We started in December 2019 and we're scheduled to be complete in April 2020. Well, we all know what happened by March 2020! Left the apartment and moved into what little livable space there was, just like you guys. Those were some long and uncertain days.
While it seems slow now (and it is), just know by spring and next summer that your dream home will be done and it will have all been worth it!

Seeing your Westies is bittersweet. About 12 years ago we decided to get a Westie for our first family pet. Phoebe was beautiful, the kids loved her, she was my wife’s third child. After 2 years she wasn’t acting right one day so I took her to the vet. They called later the same day and said she had swallowed part of a chew toy and would keep her overnight for evaluation. They called back a couple hours later and said Phoebe had a seizure and passed away. Gut punch for us and the kids. A few years passed and we decided to get another dog but couldn’t get another Westie because of the memories. We ended up with a Chihuahua/Yorkie mix, a Chorkie. Sadie is absolutely my wife’s third child and she’s been a blessing for 11 years but we still miss Phoebe.

You gotta put vinyl plank down. From the first time you said you were keeping the concrete I thought this. Walking on concrete is so hard on your joints and is always cold, nice in the summer but not so much. Plus as everything settles you'll get cracks. I notice you have a decent amount of stress relief grooves in there so might not be an issue. Just my 2 cents.

I don’t live in your climate zone, but cold air is dry air from a building science perspective.
If you’ve got a working exhaust fan, having it run much of the day and maybe one cracked window upstairs could remove most of the moisture.
If you don’t have an exhaust fan, that might be where all the moisture is coming from huh!
In that case two cracked windows for a little while after a shower might hold you over.

It's problematic to do interior construction during an Iowa winter due to the high levels of moisture being added inside the home. It's good that you're on top of that. The commercial dehumidifier was the right call. I've seen black mold on framing and drywall in cold snaps because the house can't be opened up to let moisture out. My son is a trim carpenter and lives in Dallas County so send me a message if you run out of options. I know his builders have slowed down on their builds so he may be able to fit you in. He's been doing that work for over a decade and almost all of it is new construction.
My wife and I will happily come over and help harvest those black raspberries. 😁 I don't mind the scars. We go up to the Berry Patch Farm south of Nevada every year to a few gallons. People that think raspberries are only red don't know what they're missing.
I drove up to Minneapolis yesterday and the snow, especially in Iowa, along I-35 was black from all the topsoil. Looked terrible, and kind of depressing. Hopefully this rain will wash that away and we can go back to some clean(er) snow in the coming weeks.
Drywall dust is like talcum powder. It's ridiculously fine and sticks to everything. Seeing you with the mop reminded me of me when we built our house. I was obsessed with keeping the job site clean and as dust free as possible. It was quite a battle.

I know we all want to save money, but nice fixtures are very pleasing on the eye, such as lighting and faucets, quality fixtures make a huge difference, you normally only buy them once, such as door handles and kitchen faucets, it sure makes a difference, our house had cheap fixtures and we slowly spent a lot of money upgrading them all. I converted all of our old school recessed lighting to led, your house being so new, you won`t have that problem, yeah, the finish work takes the time, but it`s coming along, after the drywall sanding and paint, the place stays pretty clean, dust came out of our furnace for a month, all the best to you guys.

You need to install an HRV this will dry up all the moisture that you have. Your lumber will be moist for awhile. The home is so air tight. HRV should be installed in all moist areas like Bathroom, kitchen and laundry room etc. Your Heating contractor should know all this or your general would have said something to be added. It will save you lots of time and money.
