      Unfortunately I was the scorer so I'd have to catch myself... we all try very hard not to enter controlled airspace as the penalty is very severe! See my current contest as an example...

      Yah, so easy to do in a street when you hit a section that's unexpectedly just ripping. Sometimes speeding up isn't enough to arrest it, and a 100-200' incursion can be impossible to avoid (but you really should!)

    2:20 Did this whilst thermalling with a mate. Don't know if its a normal thing but I know it scared the hell out of me

    • @davesgliding
      @davesgliding 4 месяца назад +1

      I did it once 200' above circuit height, fortunately near the entry. That used up my buffer ... I immediately joined the circuit and went in. On windy/gusty days, I thermal a little faster. I suspect Tim was carrying water ballast, which can make speed control in weak or narrow thermals tricky.

      @@davesgliding At height a nuisance. Near the ground meh.
      I hit huge rotor a few years ago at a central England airfield when the wind speed & dirction found an ungodly combination with hanger roofs & nearby trees.
      Even with a 3 axis microlight's Rotax engine it was, ermm, 'disconcerting'

    unexpectedly had to vacate a caravan I lived in for 3 years of adventuring because I sold it today. I miss flying. The point, I stumbled across this little gold pin (badge) with three diamonds. It's been a long.long time. I miss it, but I had my run. I enjoy seeing yours. PIK 20B and a Nimbus 2C were mine and about 20 others for a flight or two. Aerobatics with a champion (I was flying) And to be honest some near death which only fully realized/sank-in on the ground Those were the days. I'll catch another thermal before I go. Be pleased with second (as you should) next time go for first. Thanks, your video came at the right moment.

    Congratulations and thanks for the entertaining video. I'm not a pilot but just one question, why the 6,000' something height limit, is there commercial airspace above?

    • @PureGlide
      @PureGlide  4 месяца назад +3

      Hi yes air traffic control is required above 6500 feet in that area, and we don’t allow that for contest use. The reason is they might let a few people in but not others, which isn’t a fair contest.

    • @alcampbell5831
      @alcampbell5831 4 месяца назад

      @@PureGlide Now that you mention 6,500 I should have thought it through. I remember from back in my skydiving days over here in Oz we would often end up in an argument with the pilot because he didn't want to call up Traffic Control to go over 6,500 (I think it was the figure) and we jumpers didn't want to get out at anything less than 10,000. Drop Zone was only about 80km south-east of Tullamarine, so fair enough.

    Hi Tim. Are you guys using knots for vertical speed ? I though the norm was ft/min ?

    • @PureGlide
      @PureGlide  4 месяца назад +4

      Hi, yes knots for wind, vertical speed and airspeed. But we do tasks speed in km/h because we're not savages haha

    • @nicolas140783
      @nicolas140783 4 месяца назад +1

      You anglosaxon guys and your imperial units...sailplanes in France and Germany are mostly in metric system. It makes everything quickly convertible...

    • @Johan-ex5yj
      @Johan-ex5yj 4 месяца назад

      @@nicolas140783 I agree that metric is better, but the Europeans got one thing wrong. They should change their varios from m/s to km/h. It is very helpful to have both vertical speed and airspeed in the same unit (like knots in the case of NZ). For example if you want to work out your current glide ratio.
