Thanks Tim, as a new pilot I really appreciate the way you explain your decision making and discuss the outcomes, both good and bad. I find following your thinking processes provides me with strategies I can put into play in my own flying. Cheers mate 👍🏼😊
Having a superb first leg only to screw up right after the TP, classic 🤣 Probably still very good overall time anyway. Lovely video to warm up for spring on our side of the globe.
Wow, thanks Mate! This is the kind of video that I love to watch! 😀👍 Like the Gliding Instructor (and Software Developer) that you are, you explain what you’re doing in such a logical / understandable way that even a Dum-Dum like me can understand it. That just makes all the difference… Btw: Also like the “Strip-Map + Alt”- display.
Thanks Tim for another excellent lesson in the fine art of gliding. The cloud lines you fly and sharing your thoughts as you go is invaluable to folks like me who are starting to fly our first cross-country’s.
I really enjoyed that, next best thing to actual flight. I also liked the split screen with the SeeYou trace on the sid. Keep these whole leg vids coming, I love it.
Superb, thanks Tim. I'm looking forward to our soaring and comp season in the UK couple of months to go yet. I really liked your description of the decision making and how many climbs it is possible to reject in the best conditions to improve your speed. The side panel with the task map really helped understand the context of the first leg. Well done 👍
NICE combination of split screens with vario and altimeter. I also enjoyed your verbal analysis of clouds and decisions to turn into thermals and get lift!. Thx
Nice video. Enjoyed your PDM process as you worked through that task. The split screen was very helpful. Overall informative, and a great way for me to spend some time on a cold winter evening in the northern hemisphere. Thanks for sharing.
When flying near cloud is there are height limits you need to worry about? Eg I believe 3000 AMSL or 1500 AGL, whichever is highest, here in Australia you need a 1000 foot clearance from the cloud mostly to avoid IFR traffic.
Yeah normal planes in NZ have 1000 foot clearance vertically, and 2km horizontally, unless either below 3000' ASL, OR less than 1000 feet above the ground. Gliders in NZ have an exception that takes it to 500 feet vertically. On top of that, we have special 'restricted glider flying areas' that we activate during a contest, so we can fly up to cloud base legally, without any risk of other non-gliding traffic popping out through the clouds into us. We still have to be clear of cloud enough to see each other, and see the ground at all times. FLARM also helps a LOT when it's bad visibility, and was required for the contest. Cheers for the tip!
Thanks for very interesting content, from another comp. Pilot. Would love to see yr. Instruments continuosly - is that possible for yr. next recording?
Hi, great video! Would be great to add your airspeed and also if possible the wind direction to get a better understanding where to find lift under a cloud. Greetings from cold germany.
@@PureGlide Thanks! More thought of the dominant direction of the wind as a general meteorological information that could be useful to interpret why the strongest lift under a cloud is where it is.
Those first two climbs you stopped for were extremely satisfying! Enjoyed the Mike Lima subplot, a real Bane from the Dark Knight Rises kinda vibe... was it SW wind for that whole first leg?
Is it me or at about the 9:40 mark do you open a tracking website on your phone to see what the other gliders are doing? Looks a bit like “spot the gliders”
I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot about what my own glider is capable of. Have you considered a 360° camera or a second camera pointing straight up for your future videos? I find I'm always trying to look up at the cloud directly above you to figure out exactly where that lift is coming from!
Yeah one day I'll get one - a lot more work to edit the videos, so I'm not rushing on that one :) Great to hear you're wanting to look up at the clouds! That's one of the key things that lots of people don't do enough. Cheers!
Congrats to the good outcome - would you mind analyzing if it was a bad route back from the 1st turnpoint? The other direction looked so uncomfortably dark.
Yeah I should have stuck to the dark line of cloud - that was the convergence line, and even if it wasn't lifting much under it, it still wouldn't have had the sink that I found going the way I did, which would have saved me having to stop and climb on the way South again...
Too bad we missed details on final glide to starting airport. I would have appreciated verbal discussion of location/conditions and selection of airspeed to get home.
There are two rectangular screens on the dashboard right of the big screen, below the small screen you can find the Vario. Presumably something like a LX S80.
Hi Tim, do you have a second mobile in your pocket? I always fly with my phone in my pocket in case I have to bail out and need to phone an ambulance etc. Thoughts?
No I don't, but I do have the PLB on my parachute. However it's only secured with Velcro which is probably not good enough. So it's a great point, I should sort out something better! Yes an old spare phone would be a good idea in the pocket. Or get a dedicated glider tablet.
@@PureGlide I’ve been playing around with the navigator app after watching this video and it really is great! I think I will be buying a “burner” phone to keep in my pocket and trying out the app for the rest of the season! I thought about the dedicated tablet, but seems you would either need a SIM card in it to access some of the features which rely on an internet connection.
You got distracted from your narrative for a moment at about 3:21 by the need to fly the glider. What were you saying about delaying your start call so you can start your engine? It seems unfair to the pure gliders to motor back for a re-start if you didn't like your initial run? Well done on the day!
Yeah we have some weird rule you can only motor back to the airfield if you haven’t called a start yet. You do have to call up for permission from the contest director. Weird I know, and yes somewhat unfair!
That looked like a fun leg. We obviously have a very different point of reference for weak conditions!
Yeah it wasn't too weak really, but relatively weak compared to the rest of the day!
true
That´s exactly what I was thinking. Tim if you consider this weak condition, you are invited to fly a contest in Ferrara IT :-)
Awesome scenery makes me homesick...watching from Margaret River,Western Australia
Thanks for watching, Cheers!

Thats awesome that we can watch the altitude on the right thank you 👍
Glad you liked it! Cheers

Yip it's a classic thing I'd do :)
Loved this, studying while watching this. Finished just as you touched down. Thanks!

Well done, Tim. Even with a couple of hickups, it's a great result.

Hey so nice that you Upload this regulary. At the Moment it is off season in germany, you help me through that suffering time. ;)
Thanks Paul! We have a few days between contests, so why not :)
NICE combination of split screens with vario and altimeter. I also enjoyed your verbal analysis of clouds and decisions to turn into thermals and get lift!. Thx
Much appreciated!
Great video, trying to learn everything I can about racing and really enjoyed watching/listening to the decisions you made.

Excellent work Tim! Congratulations on a Warp speed task!
Thank you so much 😀
Great job Tim. Videos like this are fantastic lessons for inexperienced pilots like myself 🙂 Please share more. Cheers!
Thanks, will do!
great vid Tim and many congratulations on your win !
Thank you!
Great Video! Thank you for sharing!
Our pleasure!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who talks to myself during a task!
haha the real question is: do I still do it when the camera isn't on?!
@@PureGlide I find myself swearing at the thermals, camera or not!
Cliffhanger episode ! Can you drill and fit a cooling intake/duct for the camera ?
Well done Tim
Thanks Brian!
Thank you
You're welcome
Very usefull, thank you.

Never been in a +10kn climb in a thermal day... yet :P

Must be a convergence :) as usual around the North Island!

Clikbait... Says weak conditions and takes a 10kt thermal... 🤣
Great instructional video for decision making. Keep on going.
Had to get up to it first! lol and by weaker I kinda meant relative to the rest of the day. Glad you enjoyed it, cheers

Yeah I was thinking I should have set that up for the hawk video! I’ll see what I can do at some stage.
Absolutely amazing like you're videos But will love to learn to fly
You should! Well worth finding a club near you and go for a trial flight
@@PureGlide hope to find one
Awesome....
Thank you! Cheers!
Congrats on placing 1st

Hi, great video! Would be great to add your airspeed and also if possible the wind direction to get a better understanding where to find lift under a cloud. Greetings from cold germany.
Hi if you watch in 4k you can see the airspeed dial on the panel. As for wind direction, your guess is as good as mine!

Maybe weak by Oz standards but stronger than almost any UK day!
Haha yes!

I was watching a van conversion from Tim which in turn led me here for some strange reason. Now I’m not even interested in converting my van.
Haha you should definitely take up gliding. And convert a van :) The perfect combo!

Hi Tim, great video again. What Type of App do you use for tracking the other gliders on your phone?
Hi that's the gliding New Zealand tracking website: gliding.net.nz/tracking
Stay tuned, international version coming soon!
I am not a pilot, but very interested in this topic. What does the beeping in alternating frequency mean?
Is that Navigator you’re using on your phone? Thanks for the videos! Martin
Hi Martin, no that's the Gliding NZ tracking system. Cheers!
